GSHS Students Garner First Place In STEM Competition By Ann Mead Ash

Last fall, Danya Rose, a member of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Technology Student Association (TSA), had an idea. “We wanted to do something that impacted the community,” said Rose, referring to his subsequent collaboration with fellow TSA members William Culbert and Ryan Troop in September 2019. At that point, the trio was not sure what they might create, but Rose had an interest in plants, so they contacted Grassland FFA officers Allison Zimmerman and Andrew Horst about developing something that would aid in plant growth. The group began working on a project that eventually came to be called the Plant Hopper. Similar to a Ferris wheel, the design for the six-foot-tall apparatus includes a computer program that stores the information for the light, water, and

nutrients needed for optimum growth of certain types of plants. The Hopper would conserve space in greenhouses while holding up to 16 plant trays of eight plants each. In October 2019, while the students were working on the initial design for the Plant Hopper, Dr. Robert Hollister, ELANCO School District superintendent, contacted faculty member Joe Steinmacher, who advises TSA, about the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Competition. For the contest, teams of students research, design, and present a device that can improve quality of life. Steinmacher approached Rose about creating the Hopper for the competition. As the team moved forward to complete the model Hopper in time for the Lancaster region competition, which was held on Feb. 11 at the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 offices in Lancaster, the three TSA members were See GSHS Students pg 3

On March 4, about 50 area residents gathered in a meeting room at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. The residents were there at the invitation of Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) of New Holland. According to Daryl Groff, GSFR director of development, the event, dubbed Farm Safety Day, was the first of its kind presented by GSFR in partnership with Lancaster Extension office and Penn State. The Farm Safety Day 2020 program began at 9 a.m. with a propane safety program presented by Rick Bunn of Martindale Propane. At 9:30 a.m., Dr. Nathan Kapp of Conestoga Animal Hospital discussed animal medication. At 10:15 a.m., Steve Brown from the Penn State University (PSU) Agricultural Department talked about grain bins and confined spaces, and at 10:45 a.m., Kay L. Services parted ways. Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other See Bridge Of Hope pg 2
