During April, which is Volunteer Appreciation Month, selfless souls who give time to local organizations are remembered and thanked, but Meghan Ervine, director of

marketing and communications with CrossNet Ministries, notes that sentiment is extended throughout the year. “We always appreciate (our volunteers),” noted Ervine, who presented statistics showing the number of area residents who are helped

yearly by the ministry. “(This is) the impact volunteers have on the ELANCO community and CrossNet,” she pointed out. “This couldn’t happen without the support of volunteers. It really does take a community.”

Indeed, housing 14 families,

Kate Merchlinski, who now oversees the New Holland Farmers Day Association floral exhibits, is in awe of her fellow members of the Country Gardeners Club of ELANCO who coordinated the flower exhibits in the Scout building on Roberts Avenue. “They did this for 34 years in the Scout building,” Kate pointed out. “They had so many entries in this tiny place.” Kate, who volunteered with the group for more than a decade before taking the coordinator’s position, especially recalls the intricate lighting system that

providing 593 rides, serving 245 students enrolled in youth center programs, and offering 13,358 pounds of food to 617 individuals each month (and these are just a few of the statistics) are among the many accomplishments of the CrossNet staff members and 835

volunteers - approximately 14% of the population of New Holland.

According to Ervine, volunteers come to the ministry in a number of ways. Many are invited to attend the organization’s yearly banquet and sign on to help after learning more about CrossNet’s mission to

Individual attention makes Aaron’s Acres summer camps something special

There is simply nothing like one-on-one connections, human touch and personal interaction. They can lift spirits and change lives.

Those types of interactions are what Aaron’s Acres is built upon, and collectively they are the driving force behind the local nonprofit’s original program, summer camp.

“We accept participants with all

disabilities,” said Elaine Burnett, who’s been a program director at Aaron’s Acres for 12 years. “Their needs vary, from hand over hand to behavior assistance to emotional and communicative assistance. With 1-on-1 or 1-on-2 staffing, we’re able to meet those needs. We’re able to meet those participants where they’re at. It helps us meet the child where their need is right now.”

“The traditional summer camp usually has a 1-to-6 or 1-to-8

Main St., New Holland. Inspired by the book “The Great House of God” by Max Lucado and told through movement and spoken word, the narrated dance performance takes a look into each space of the heart as if the heart were a house. Each room

holds an encounter with a loving father, friend, counselor, and guide.

Ornate Dance Theatre is a professional dance company, which aims to create a space for young artists to develop their technique and share the love of Christ with confidence. The artists will perform in the round for the first time.

the members had to install yearly in the ceiling of the building. “Those ladies had to put ladders up to put lights up,” she recalled. “They were crawling around in the rafters.”

When Kate took the wheel of the floral exhibits in 2022, she was overjoyed by being able to organize the display in Warehouse 100 on Franklin Street. “It was an embarrassment of riches, I had so much room,” Kate remembered. “It was an easy transition.”

Helping Kate to organize flowers in the new location were Country Gardeners Club members, who continue to volunteer to help set up the exhibits, and Kate’s husband, John, a craftsman who has built several structures to help enhance the space. “I have been getting him to make me things,” confessed Kate. In 2022, John created a “fabulous arbor that people walked through to go in.”“It makes an impact,” shared Kate.

Since Kate started, the exhibit has moved again, this time to the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. “This last year, I did a ‘Tea Party in the Garden’ (theme),”

said Kate. “I had a topiary lady, chairs, a table, and a tea cart.”

Kate delights in hunting for ideas and themes for the display, and she has a timely idea for the 2025 event. “This coming year, it will be focused on bees. I am excited about that,” she stated, adding that she has asked John to build a small beehive for the display and that she is in touch with the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “They have a live hive, and I’m going to try to schedule a live hive (to be on-site) and someone to talk about it,” she noted, adding that she plans to include a variety of the plants that the bees are most attracted to in the display.

Although Kate was familiar with the fair floral exhibits, she was impressed with what she learned about the entries once she took over the role of coordinator. “We had 688 entries last year, and 70 of them were (entered by) youths,” stated Kate. “We want younger people involved, and I was happy to see that number increasing.”

According to Kate, entries run the gamut from houseplants to succulents and grasses. “We have a little

of everything,” she pointed out, noting that tastes change. “Years ago, everyone had African violets,” she said, adding that the purple plants are not as popular as they once were.

“We get a lot of dahlias,” she noted, pointing out that Master Gardener Tim Elkner, who serves as one of three judges of the fair exhibits, specializes in dahlias. “He told me we have excellent entries in dahlias,” she said.

“We have local people that are that passionate about flowers, and they are raising first-rate flowers to bring to our show. These people know what they’re doing … and we are getting excellent entries.”

In addition to the bee theme, Kate is looking forward to seeing different types of entries at this year’s fair. “We have containers, and that is fairly new, and this year, we will add miniature landscape design,” she said, noting that two New Holland Fair committee members saw miniature landscape design featured at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and sent her a photo. “We will give it a shot,” she said. “You have to keep adding things to see what clicks.”

Kate admitted that the fair flowers - like any garden products - are always at the mercy of the weather. “Last year, when it was dry for so long, we had different plants (entered),” she recalled. “You never know (what the weather will be).” She also noted that a year that is too wet or has too many of a certain type of bug will affect the

entries.

No matter the weather, Kate said that taking part in the fair - whether as an exhibitor or as a helper - is generally a pleasant endeavor. “People don’t know how much fun it is to volunteer for the fair,” she pointed out, adding that when the judges finish, the volunteers go to work arranging the displays. “(We) move things around to make it look pretty,” she stated. “Say there’s a lot of heavy color in one area, then you have to move it to another, and it’s just fun.”

This year, Kate will have help from her co-chair, Cathy Eby. “She has been volunteering and helping me, and we bounce ideas off each other,” reported Kate. “Together we will brainstorm some more displays.”

Kate noted there is a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in overseeing the exhibits. “We have a very good depth of talent,” she stated. “After we get it all placed, I look around and think, ‘This is very special.’ It makes me very proud.”

Readers who would like to donate to or volunteer for the fair may visit https://newhollandfair .org. Readers with specific questions may email info@newholland fair.org or call 717-354-5880.

offer help and hope in the name of Christ. Others join the volunteer team through word of mouth. “We have certain volunteers that have been with us for years, and their families get involved,” said Ervine, who noted that newspapers and social media reach different generations and that local businesses and churches send teams to community events such as the coat giveaway or Christmas gift program. “We are always looking for businesses and churches that will host collection bins (for community events),” said Ervine. One business that has found a unique way to volunteer is Iron Mountains, LLC. “Iron Mountains, LLC has been volunteering with CrossNet for four years,” noted Ervine. “Every June they send out a team to help with various service projects at CrossNet. They have been a consistent business that sends their employees to volunteer with us, and we’ve greatly benefited from this partnership.” Ervine noted that this model may work well for other local businesses, especially during summer.

One area where CrossNet is in need of volunteers is the transportation program, which provides rides for both adults and children. For adult riders, requests from women are sent to female drivers and from men to male drivers. All transportation volunteers must have had their driving records checked, and they must have undergone the required clearances. Sandy Lindsey, transportation volunteer, likes being part of a continuing mission. “I love that CrossNet has always focused on the community here, and reaching the people within the community. That has always been their mission,” she stated.

Investing time in the youths of New Holland often reaps unexpected rewards for volunteers. Chelsea Weaver has seen this happen firsthand. “Volunteering with CrossNet has impacted and strengthened my faith. It has shown me God’s heart for us and for the students. He really pursues us and loves us,” she said. Youth center volunteers must be at least 21 years old and are required to have all necessary clearances to work with youths. They also must complete an onboarding process, which includes an evening of training. Volunteers are needed Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

The CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center is in need of volunteers to pick up food program donations at area locations, including stores and farms that donate to the food pantry. The pickup days vary each month. Food items that are picked up are then delivered to the back door of the Food and Nutrition

Twin Valley Bible Academy’s Annual

Center at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland. Volunteer Gene Skulrak serves CrossNet in this way, and he sees how his part impacts the whole.

“There is a great need in our community, and we are all blessed with special talents from the Lord,” he stated.

“I want to be part of something that is big, and this is big.”

Area residents interested in volunteering with CrossNet may email kim@elancocross.org or call 717-355-2454 and ask for Kim to be walked through the onboarding process.

“The goal is to create a traditional summer camp program,” said Burnett. “All participants should have opportunities to enjoy summer camp regardless of their abilities. Everybody should have the opportunity to participate in programs like these. At Aaron’s Acres, we want to provide that for them.”

In 2024, Aaron’s Acres summer camps served 45 participants. But a shortage of seasonal staff counselors created a waiting list for participants.

“We can only accept as many participants as we have staff for,” said Burnett. “The more staff we have, the more participants we can have. Last year, we didn’t have enough staff members to accommodate all the participants every two weeks. We’d like to accept 60 participants every two weeks. We need to hire more staff.”

Staff counselors must be 18 or older, and they are not required to have any specialized training.

“We will do all the training,” said Burnett. “Our counselors are generally made up of college students who are looking to go into special education or becoming social workers. This is an amazing hands-on opportunity for college students.”

Aaron’s Acres, which is located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, was founded in 1998 as a summer camp for 11 participants ages 5 through 9 with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves 160 individuals ages 5 through 40 with yearround, recreation-based sports, social and community-service programs directed by trained, certified staff members.

“It started when a parent came to our executive director (Risa Paskoff) and said, ‘School is over. Now what?’” said Burnett. “So that parent and our executive director started this summer camp. Over the years, we’ve expanded the ages, and we expanded the programs. Then we started a weekend program. Last year, we expanded our programs to include adults.”

Ephrata National Bank (ENB) has announced the creation of a fund for the Clinic for Special Children, a nonprofit comprehensive medical clinic located in Gordonville. The clinic cares for families facing rare genetic disorders, primarily in the local Amish and Mennonite communities.

ENB seeded the fund with a

$250,000 gift, which will support the clinic’s sustainability as it continues its innovative, cutting-edge work in its new 28,000-square-foot facility. The fund is open to donors who would like to consider a gift for the benefit of the clinic in perpetuity. Interested donors can visit www.epnb.com for more information.
