Slow Down Ministries Accelerates Road to Recovery

Because they move us from Point A to Point B, cars are modes of transportation. Slow Down Ministries views vehicles in the same utilitarian way, but on a more spiritual level. The local nonprofit considers cars modes of transformation.

“I tell the guys, ‘You’re not getting an Escalade or a Ferrari,’” said Frank Gaston, the founder and executive director of Slow Down Ministries.

“(The vehicles) are going to last a year, and once you get a job, you can get another car. Some guys run them a year or two or three years. It’s their responsibility.

“I’m just trying to get them to work, get them to see their families, get them to church,” continued Gaston. “(The need for personal transportation) is even more important when you’ve wrecked your life. They’ve got to check in with their probation officer. They need a car.”

The GateHouse Lititz judges lightly. And when it does, the GateHouse Lititz judges people on who they are, not what they do or have done.

The GateHouse Lititz doesn’t give up on people; it doesn’t throw away souls.

“There is hope. We provide hope,” said Anthony Valentin, who’s been the program director at The GateHouse Lititz for four years. “There are people out there who are willing to fight this battle and help. We want individuals to know it’s possible. We’re willing to walk alongside you. This is not meant to be done alone. It comes down to one person helping another.”

There are many great methods for getting things done.

There are collaborative cooperations. There are awe-inspiring approaches. There are individual initiatives.

Of course, there’s also the United Way.

“United Way means community,” said Maddie Seiler, the vice president

of marketing and communications for the United Way of Lancaster County.

“All United Ways across the world show up in communities in powerful ways.

The United Way does that; we unite. We mobilize resources and get them to people who need them.

At the end of the day, it’s about making the community better and making sure all of our neighbors can thrive.”

The GateHouse Lititz, which is located at 649 E. Main St., Lititz, is an accredited residential recovery facility - a type of halfway house - which is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. The local nonprofit takes a holistic approach to addiction and recovery.

“Our mission is to help individuals transform their lives that have been centered around drug and alcohol addiction,” said Valentin. “We encourage them to be part of the community. We encourage them to volunteer. We want to show them it’s about community and what it’s like to give back.”

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.

Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”

The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their

child, but it’s not required.

While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.

“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,” he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”

He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free,

LBC’s Journey of Discovery Ends in Title Moment

It was a moment in time. It was a momentous moment, but a moment, nonetheless.

In many ways, everything had led up to this for the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) men’s basketball squad. Now, it’s a recent memory upon which all future moments will be judged.

“It was a great moment,” said Jon Mack, who’s been LBC’s head coach for seven years. “It’s something you’ll remember, but the journey ranks up there just as high. That journey was filled with highs and lows and a lot of character development in the process. It wasn’t the ultimate goal we set for ourselves. Hopefully, it’ll be something our guys will be able to draw from in their careers and with their families.”

In late March, the Chargers captured the Division One national championship of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in Branson, Mo. Thirdseeded LBC defeated Columbia International 82-75 in the final game of the eight-team, single-elimination tournament.

Junior Camden Hurst, a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School, poured in 27 points for LBC in the national championship game, snagged five rebounds and dished out two assists. Teammates Reaves Hooks and Bennett Bowers each scored 15 points for the Chargers.

LBC opened a 37-27 halftime margin and held Columbia International to 37% shooting for the game.

In addition to the national championship, LBC ended its 2025-26 campaign with a 23-8 overall record.

“We played well, we got off to a really good start and we complemented each other well,” said Mack. “Against Columbia International, we were outsized at every position. We really had to commit to pressure, and our pace of play gave them problems. We put bodies on their guys in the paint and made them work. The confidence just built throughout the game. We never allowed them to get the lead; we always had a response.”

There are about 100 small colleges from across the country affiliated with the NCCAA. The Chargers, who received an at-large bid into the NCCAA’s Division One national tournament, were the only team at the event whose program doesn’t offer scholarships.

In 2015, LBC won the NCCAA Division Two national championship.

The GateHouse Lititz’s live-in 90-day recovery program includes one-on-one therapy sessions, group therapy, employment support services, life-skills training, accountability, chores, routine development, mental health awareness and mentorship programs. Some clients complete the recovery program, while others don’t, but everyone benefits in one way or another.

“It’s teaching them to live life on life’s terms,” said Valentin, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “Some of our individuals come to us defeated. But we tell them (addiction) doesn’t have to define you; it doesn’t have to affect your future. Sometimes individuals have blinders on and they can’t see the bigger picture. That’s when we step in. We also get them set up with (Pennsylvania) CareerLink.”

The GateHouse Lititz serves about 150 men each year. Currently, the residential recovery house is hosting 25 individuals, 19 of whom are employed throughout Lancaster County.

The GateHouse Lititz’s residential extended care is designed for males between the ages of 18 and 60. All of the individuals are from Pennsylvania - a handful from Lancaster County and from as far away as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Erie.

“These individuals have struggled with addiction in their lives,” said Valentin. “Some have had traumatic experiences. Some are trying to put their pasts behind them. Some are looking for encouragement. I look at individuals like if they were my child, are they being guided the way I’d like my child to be guided? They’re human beings.”

“Everyone has a story; everyone has a past,” continued Valentin. “There’s a lot more to them than what we’re seeing on the outside. The question is: ‘Why are they struggling? What is holding them back?’ I have met some really good people who have struggled with addictions.”

The GateHouse Lititz employs 15 staff members, 12 of whom work full time. The GateHouse is funded primarily through Medicaid, but it does participate in fundraising and grant programs.

“An individual has got to want it,” said Valentin. “We will engage them in different modulates of recovery. Hopefully, they will put their best foot forward. But at the end of the day, they’ve got to do it. You can’t do it for them. Kind of like, ‘You can live a better way of life and here are some examples.’ We hope they choose a productive way of life. All we can do is provide the information and know-how.”

“When you’re in addiction, it becomes natural, it becomes normal,” he added. “It’s a choice,

and that’s what makes it hard. Relapse is part of addiction. You’re fighting a battle. We try to look for the good in people.”

Established in Lititz in 1972, the GateHouse now also offers similar long-term residential recovery programs for men in Mountville and for women in Marietta. The GateHouse also operates eight transitional houses throughout Lancaster County and offers outpatient services in the city.

“Data shows that the longer individuals are involved with treatment, the better chance they have of recovery,” said Valentin. “We want to establish a foundation for recovery. As they’re hitting these benchmarks, the insurance company will say they’re no longer at great risk, so they can step into outpatient services. Some individuals may not be from this community, but they want to stay here for employment.”

Golf Tournament to Benefit Nonprofits

The Big Swing for Sight, Science, and Education will be held on Monday, May 18, at 9 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. Proceeds will benefit VisionCorps, the Lancaster Science Factory, and the Joshua Montpetit Foundation.

The golf tournament was established by Lisa Shirk,

a VisionCorps trustee, in memory of her husband and longtime VisionCorps supporter, Ray Shirk. Ray was a businessman, entrepreneur, and visionary. He was the founder and CEO of the Securus Group, a multifaceted insurance firm that twice earned the honor of Best Places to Work in PA. Lisa started the Big Swing in 2013 to honor Ray’s love of golf and the local organizations he cared about.

from an office or a brickand-mortar building. The ministry is one man’s mission to give individuals a lift on their roads to recovery, an avenue he has traveled himself.

Gaston, a resident of East Earl Township, solicits donations of not-so-gently-used vehicles from the community. If the cars are salvageable, he’ll have them repaired and inspected. If they’re not salvageable, he’ll scrap them and apply the proceeds toward his next reclamation project.

Once a car is in running order, Gaston presents the vehicles to graduates of local addiction recovery programs.

“I need the community to be aware of what I’m doing,” said Gaston. “I’ll go buy cars for $500, put a couple hundred bucks into them and see if I can get them running. Some people donate cars, and I have shops contributing. When (recipients) get these vehicles, they’re inspected. It’s a road-worthy vehicle ready to go.”

of Freedom in New Holland and Restart Training Center in Strasburg, which are all treatment centers that offer addiction recovery programs. To receive a vehicle, those in recovery must have completed a Christ-centered program.

“The ministries are doing the hard work,” said Gaston. “I just help with the next step of their lives.”

Gaston distributes about four cars a year. That number fluctuates based on donations, but the need is steady.

“We’re really trying to be donor-supported,” said Gaston. “It’s dependent on how many cars we get and if they’re salvageable. Every month someone is graduating from those programs. I get calls, ‘Do you have a car?’ Sometimes I don’t. Does everyone need a car? Not everyone. The guy who is starting from the bottom, from the ditch, that’s who I’m serving.”

It’s a ditch from which Gaston has emerged.

In 2018, Gaston spent 11 months in the Lancaster County Prison on drugs and firearms charges. Now, he’s

been clean and sober for nearly six years.

“Basically, my addictions got the better of me,” said Gaston. “I was a meth addict, and I was going 100 miles an hour. But God slowed me down and said, ‘Look what’s happening around you and see Me.’ I was all about me. (Slow Down Ministries) was a vision I saw. I was asking God what he wanted me to do. He told me, ‘You’re going to do what you were doing before, but for other people.’ Now my heart’s for others.”

As part of its mission, Slow Down Ministries holds fundraisers, conducts outreach and engages in educational programs.

“My message is, ‘Don’t

quit on people,’” said Gaston. “Second chances can save lives. If people would’ve quit on me, I wouldn’t be here. Jesus Christ is a restorer and a redeemer. If we can act more like Jesus Christ, we can help others.”

Now, Gaston is considering the next logical step in Slow Down’s progression. “The board and I talk about what else we can do for these guys,” said Gaston. “My vision is to get more help from the community. I’d like to see Slow Down open a small automotive shop and provide classes on automotive maintenance, just basic stuff like oil changes.”

“For this team, it was a wall we felt like we had to break through,” said Mack. “We felt we did a lot of good things throughout the season. Breaking through and getting that national championship was a breakthrough for our kids. It was an accomplishment because we played three tough teams (at the tournament). Being able to win it with this group was a pretty cool moment.”

“We found ourselves in the national championship game, and we said, ‘Why not? Let’s win it,’” added Mack.

The 2025-26 version of the LBC men’s basketball program was made up of 18 players, five coaches and a team manager - 24 individuals with a shared purpose pooling their talents and pulling together toward a common goal.

“They’re guys who fit who we are,” said Mack. “They are driven by the vision in our program. But they’re guided by our purpose, which exceeds more than wins. We want to display that when people see us playing. Anytime you play in a national tournament, your platform is expanded.”

The Chargers’ goal entering the season wasn’t necessarily to win a

national championship, but neither was the possibility of it ruled out. “I expected us to have success,” said Mack. “I expected us to be prepared for our conference play. Our success starts with the leadership of our captains. We really harped on our level of accountability. I think our captains did a good job of leading in the right ways. We had a group of guys who played hard and together. If you compete, you have a chance to win. I felt like we competed this year.”

LBC won six of its first nine games of the season. But it may have been a 6-2 run through its nonconference schedule that prepared the Chargers for their postseason glory.

“We learned how to win in the postseason,” said Mack. “I think at the end of the season we prepared better. I think mentally, our guys are better when we’re clicking. What we accomplished was a cool moment, but the process was what mattered most.”
