Keeping New Holland colorful

Find your next adventure at the PA Family Travel Fair
BY CAT SHANNON
“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”
The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.
The event will feature free entry and free parking.
Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.
“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared.
“Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”
Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its

If you are driving on Main Street in New Holland this summer in late afternoon or evening and you get behind a fire truck moving slowly in the area between Kinzer and Hoover avenues, maybe take a deep breath and ride along patiently behind them for a bit. The team is just doing its part to keep New Holland beautiful.
Almost two decades ago, the New Holland Business Association (NHBA) decided to add a little color to the town’s sidewalks during the warmer months. Since that time, more than 60 planters filled with a variety of blooms and accents have lined Main Street during the warmer months.
Each year, sponsoring businesses and organizations purchase a membership for a fee that covers the placement of the planter, planting, and watering, as well as a nameplate with the name of the sponsor on the side. Sponsors need not be located in New Holland
to order a planter, since NHBA members come from Earl Township, East Earl Township, and the borough of Terre Hill, as well as New Holland.
Setting out those planters following Mother’s Day each spring and bringing them in around the time of the New Holland Fair is

a responsibility that is handled by volunteer employees from 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Service and Keystone Quality Motors, sister companies located in New Holland. “We ask for volunteers from employees,” explained Tanner Horst, general manager and co-owner of Keystone Quality Motors, who noted that he works with Ralph Hess of New Holland Radio Shack, who currently oversees the planter program. “We get
Little Free Library invites visitors to take a book, share a book
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“I have read my whole life; I have always been a bookworm,” said Kelly Hersh, who is the steward of Captain’s Bookshelf Little Free Library (LFL), which was recently installed at the family home in Mohnton. “This LFL first came to life almost 10 years ago at our old house, but it never had an official name. We finally … set it up here
in Twin Valley, and I decided it needed an official name. I named it after our German Shepherd, Captain, who is one of the lights of our lives.”
As part of the LFL initiative, visitors are invited to “take a book or share a book.” In addition to books for children, young adults and adults, Captain’s Bookshelf LFL also contains a little drawer of gifts that are free for the taking. “It is little

two crews to help place and pick up (the planters).”
Volunteer employees also see that the flowers continue to bloom all summer long by handling watering duties. Those watering duties are made easier using a 1981 Mack Engine that was once a Garden Spot Fire Rescue truck and is now owned by 10-8 proprietor and former New Holland fire chief Larry Martin. “(In 2016), when (fellow members of) NHBA mentioned there was a need for someone to water the planters, we thought, ‘Hey, we have this fire truck, and we could donate our time,’” reported Horst. “It’s a way we can help.” According to Horst, the engine was easily outfitted for the watering job. “We don’t use any pumps,” he explained. “The water is gravity fed from the tanks, and there’s a hose connected to it.” Two volunteer employees work together - a driver and a waterer. “We hop from pot to pot,” said Horst, who noted that usually

knickknacks - seed packets, painted rocks, bookmarks and crocheted dish scrubbies that I made,” Hersh noted.
Hersh explained that the LFL, which is bright blue/green in color, was first located at the family home in New Holland. “My husband and I worked at a furniture store. This cabinet came from a custom kitchen they were doing, and they were going to throw (the cabinet) out, so we took it,” she said. “It worked perfectly for a library. We painted it and set it out.”

Hersh noted that the family adopted Captain (formerly known as Sheldon) from Pitties.Love. Peace (PLP), a nonprofit organization based in Elizabethtown that rescues pit bulls and bully breeds.
She said that the family first connected with PLP in 2019 when it adopted its pit bull, Greta. “In 2021, they found an 8-week-old male German shepherd named Sheldon. He came from a puppy mill,” she said, noting that the dog had several medical issues. “PLP got him cleaned up, properly medicated and settled into a foster home.”

The dog’s “Gotcha Day”when the Hershes adopted him - was July 17, 2021. “We met him a couple of times before bringing him home to ensure he was a good fit for the family,” said Hersh. “We renamed Sheldon to Captain, and he was officially ours. Captain’s Bookshelf will definitely celebrate his Gotcha Day.”
Hersh shared that she has always had a soft spot for German shepherds. “German shepherds stole my heart decades ago when my family raised two shepherds named Paulie and Cheyenne for The Seeing Eye. Neither dog graduated from the program to become a guide dog, so they returned home to be family pets,” she stated. “Paulie passed away in 2008, and Cheyenne passed away in 2020. Both dogs were a major part of my life.”
The grand opening of the Captain’s Bookshelf LFL was held on March 15, Captain’s fourth birthday. “Captain is such a blessing to our lives that I wanted to dedicate my Little Free Library to him, the German shepherds that previously blessed my life and all the future German shepherds of my life,” said Hersh.
Captain’s Bookshelf LFL is located at 65 Wesley Road, Mohnton, just off Route 10. Because of safety concerns, Hersh asks that visitors park in the driveway, not on the roadway or grass. For more information, search for “Captain’s Bookshelf Little Free Library” on Facebook. Information about other LFLs in the area is available at www.littlefree library.org/map.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”
Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.
The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.
The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.
Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be

offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.
At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile.
His show is very popular.”
Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”
According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”
Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.
“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

Band concert to showcase marches

The New Holland Band will present the second edition of its program “The Art of the March” on Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
Selections will include “Pomp and Circumstance
March No. 1” by Edward Elgar. Written in 1901, it is one of the five marches in the “Pomp and Circumstance” series. The trio section contains the tune “Land of Hope and Glory” and was the first piece in the recessional music for the coronations of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Many people will recognize the melody as the tune used in high school and college graduations around the world.
Also on the program is the “Radetzky March” by Johann Strauss and “Seventy-Six Trombones” from “The Music Man.” Following up on last year’s lesser-known Sousa composition, “Mother Goose March,” the ensemble will perform “Mother
Hubbard March.”
To purchase tickets, visit www.newhollandband.org and look under “Hear” for “Performance Schedule” or call 717-355-5096. Once on campus, attendees should follow the directional signs to the chapel.

Horst is impressed by the cooperative spirit among employees and other members of the community who are involved in the project. “(The employees) from both teams work together to see the watering gets done,” he said. “It’s neat to see how people come together to do that. The planters are made of rugged plastic, which makes them lightweight, although Horst noted during the fall removal when they are filled with dirt, they are a little more difficult to handle. Before placement, the planters are cleaned by a work crew from Lighthouse Vocational Services. Choice Flowers then fills the planters with a variety of blooms and greens, based on the sun and shade quotient where
Horst also expressed how much he appreciates the team members who volunteer to take part. “It takes two guys two to three hours to water these planters,” he pointed out. “They give up a portion of their evening after a day of work, and I so appreciate their willingness to do that and make the community a little more beautiful.”
Readers who have questions about the planter program may contact Hess at 717-354-2200.

to fight hunger. For this event, local artists create and donate ceramic bowls, and local restaurants donate soup, bread, and desserts.

In exchange for a monetary donation, guests attend a meal and may keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

The upcoming fundraiser will offer more than 400 ceramic bowls made by more than 20 artists at Lancaster Creative Factory. Volunteers from Lancaster Creative Factory are also helping to organize the event.
In addition to the meal, the fundraiser will include live music by Easily Amused and an art auction. The proceeds of the event will benefit Meals on Wheels of Lancaster, which provides meals to older adults and individuals with disabilities.

Meals on Wheels and Lancaster Creative Factory’s goal is to raise over $15,000, which is the amount that was raised at the last Empty Bowls.
Lancaster Creative Factory is a nonprofit organization that offers opportunities to explore and experience the arts while providing the community a creative, collaborative space.
To purchase tickets, search for “2025 Empty Bowls” at www.eventbrite .com or stop by Lancaster Creative Factory, 580 S. Prince St., Lancaster, or Meals on Wheels, 1411 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, during business hours.
