For Power Camp Athletes, God Is The Ultimate Teammate

Power Camps keep kids active over the summer. Power Camps allow kids to meet new people and make new friends. Power Camps help kids discover sports, improve athletic skills and foster a love for their games.

Power Camps also establish and encourage relationships with God.

“It’s about mind, body and soul,” said Diana Roth, an area representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a co-director of the New Holland Power Camp.

“There are so many life lessons in sports. Athletics can teach you so many lessons. It’s so good to get outside, move and have fun. Hopefully, we’re developing a love for being physical.”

Aidan Stiger’s arms started to feel heavy.

Shooting 100 free throws in a row is a sneakily physically daunting task, but knowing it’s for charity can provide some relief.

On March 27, the Factory Ministries held its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a fundraiser where participants shoot 100 free throws for charity.

“It’s a mental game,” Stiger said. “You’ve got to keep yourself in it and try to stay focused.”

The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, holds programming with the goal of addressing poverty and empowering those who are affected by it in eastern Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.

Its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a collaboration with Baron Insurance Group, has been held since 2018. Community members can sponsor shooters either at a flat rate or per shot made.

It’s certainly more unique than the average fundraiser.

Kids need validation. Students thrive on encouragement. These emerging individuals are motivated by support.

The impending student art show at the Brownstown campus of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) provides the kind of exposure that leads to confidence and empowerment.

“Exposure is really what it’s all about,” said Randy Hess, a visual arts teacher at the Brownstown campus of LCCTC for 14 years and the organizer of the show.

“Exposure is everything to these kids. It’s really about encouragement for our students. It also showcases our school a little bit too and what we do.”

“I was trying to get that muscle memory down,” said Stiger, who was representing Smoker Door Sales. “Then you get one or two there where you lose it for a little bit.”

Stiger, once a prep basketball player for Lampeter-Strasburg, wound up making 65 of his 100 attempts. His brother, Caleb, is also heavily involved with the fundraiser and manages Baron Insurance Group’s Gordonville branch.

John Kruk to Help UDS Celebrate Community Service

Empathy and empowerment. Care management and case management. Life-skill training and independence promotion.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) does work worth celebrating.

“UDS serves with a lot of programs, and one of the most visible is service dogs,” said Angela Trout, the annual gifts and events officer for UDS. “Many people come to us through service dogs. Our mission is enhancing abilities and changing lives. We help people gain independence and help people stay in their homes longer. Some of our programs are expensive to run because we provide quality services to our clients. It’s important to support the work we do.”

UDS Foundation, the fundraising arm of UDS, will present this year’s edition of its annual gala from 4:30

to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Marriott Lancaster Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. While it is UDS’ largest fundraising event, the festive gala will celebrate the organization’s 61st anniversary and serve as community outreach for what UDS does and what it’s all about.

UDS is headquartered at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster.

“A gala is a grand celebration,” said Trout. “It’s more than a cocktail party. It is a fundraising event, but it’s elevated. It’s somewhat elegant, but not stuffy. Our gala ties in our mission to reinforce why visitors are there. They are the champions of what we do.”

That evening of April 30th will begin with mingling and hors d’oeuvres, and dinner will be served around 6 p.m. The event will include testimonials from UDS clients and volunteers.

The intense emotions that parents feel for their children is one of the highest forms of love. It ranks just ahead of the empathetic kind of love that conveys compassion for parents who have lost their children.

Brothers and Sisters In Support (BASIS) will celebrate both of those forms of meaningful love at its upcoming event.

“Everybody deals with grief differently,” said Dan Steinman, who’s been the director of BASIS ministries for four years. “There’s no right way or wrong way. Some people lose a child and they’re in shock. For some parents, when there’s a long illness, you’re sad because they died, but there’s relief because the pain is over. There’s not a time limit on grief. Sometimes you just don’t know how to react. There’s hurt there, and sometimes a hug is enough.”

BASIS, one of three altruistic initiatives supported by Handi-Vangelism of Akron, is serving this year’s edition of its annual bereavement breakfast at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Yoder’s Restaurant’s Banquet Center, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. “No parent ever expects to bury a child,” said Steinman. “We never think of it that way. In the normal living of life, we all expect we’re going to die before our children. There are a lot of people out there who have lost children, and that’s who we’re trying to reach.”

As part of the bereavement breakfast’s program, Lititz mom Donna Nicholson Stief will address the gathering with her take on the grieving process, called “A New Lens on God and Grief.”

“Some grief is like walking on shards of glass,” said Stief. “For those of us who have lost a child, it’s more like being pushed off a cliff - headfirst into an ocean of glass. Nothing shakes your life and faith like this loss. Grief is a matrix of complexity, and even the strongest faith can be tested, questioning the goodness of God. How do we reconcile our pain and faith to find a way forward? How can we grieve well and still be a light in our darkest moments? Maybe we need a new lens of God and grief.”

More than 70 individuals from Lancaster County, Lebanon County and outside of the area are expected to attend the breakfast. Many are parents who have endured the loss of a child, some are pastors, some are support people and some are BASIS ministry board members.

Parents who have lost children will receive tokens of remembrance from BASIS board members.

“We all know people who may have had a loss in their life,” said Steinman, a resident of Paradise. “But people aren’t alone in their grief. There are other people who are willing to come alongside of them. They don’t have to walk alone. They should know that there are other people who care.”

“People share stories about what their loss was,” added Steinman. “Sometimes people come to the breakfast whose grief is new. When parents lose a child, they never forget. We want to honor their children. We want to reach out to people who are hurting.”

The bereavement breakfast, which has been served as long as anyone can remember, is just one of the avenues BASIS ministry uses to reach people who have been affected by the death of a child. BASIS also hosts an outreach

picnic at Loyd H. Roland Memorial Park in Akron in August, sponsors other group events and activities, provides opportunities for personal contact, publishes a quarterly newsletter, produces grief podcasts and blogs, provides resources and sponsors support groups.

“We call them the three Ts - time, talk and tears,” said Steinman. “They all help. People think their sons or daughters will be forgotten. (BASIS) is a safe place where people can shed a tear, but people can also laugh. It’s not all doom and gloom.”

In addition to the 52-year-old BASIS ministry, Handi-Vangelism Ministries International also sponsors a disabilities ministry and a training and equipping ministry. Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, which is located at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, employs 15 staff members.

Kruk, who is expected to spin his entertaining trademark yarns, share career highlights and relay accounts of personal challenges.

“The atmosphere is electric,” said Trout, a resident of Akron. “People are so excited to be there. It’s a really fun vibe. It’s a very welcoming and interesting experience. In Lancaster, we don’t get a lot of opportunities to see big Philly sports stars. There’s a huge Eagles fanbase here.”

The UDS gala will also include live and silent auctions featuring entertainment packages, trips, experiences, donations from Eagles stars Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts and an autographed football from Eagles lineman Lane Johnson. All of the auction items can be viewed at https:// udservices.org.

“The gala has definitely grown over the years,” said Trout. “It has brought in so many new donors. The goal is to meet new people. Some people are still discovering who we are and what we do. We try to keep them involved throughout the year, and many times they become friends.”

Nearly 500 supporters, clients and their friends and families, volunteers and community members are expected to attend the UDS gala. The local nonprofit has secured the support - financial and otherwise - of 45 sponsors.

“A large majority of guests are from Lancaster County, and some come with our sponsors,” said Trout. “They’re people who know us very well. We have a lot of new friends coming. We have people coming to see John Kruk.”

Event officials are hoping this year’s UDS gala will raise $300,000.

“We have 15 programs at

UDS, and we serve over 15,000 people in 52 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Trout. “The money will go toward supporting those programs.”

Founded in 1965, UDS serves individuals 18 and older with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as elderly adults. UDS employs nearly 400 workers, many of whom either reside or work in Lancaster.

In addition to receiving program-specific state funding, UDS also conducts a fundraising golf outing at Conestoga Country Club - this year on Thursday, Sept. 17 - a bingo event for service dog funding at Lancaster Farm and Home Center in March, and quarterly lunch and learn tours.

“Fundraising is a very important part of how we operate,” said Trout. “It’s really about supporting people. When you have loved ones with needs, sometimes you just don’t know where to take them. We do provide in-home services. We want to provide people with the help they need.”

“We want campers to come away knowing more about Jesus. That’s the main purpose,” said Roth. “We want to encourage them to grow in their relationship with Him, learn the sport and grow in their sport. Kind of like, ‘Hey, I tried a new sport, I want to continue in the sport or try a different sport.’ We want them to be more confident.”

The sports being offered at the Power Camps include soccer, basketball, baseball, field hockey, volleyball, flag football and track and field, as well as outdoor events like BB gun shooting, archery, fishing, outdoor safety and hiking. The Power Camps are designed for youths between the ages of 8 and 12.

“We’re combining the love of Jesus and sports,” said Roth, a resident of New Holland. “There are a lot of positive vibes. It’s more than just about sports. Every day we have a theme day, and we have new sports this year. It’s a lot of fun. We have music playing, and we want campers to feel super welcomed. I’d love to have more and more kids come out and experience these opportunities. It’s not a competitive sports camp.”

More than 130 pre-teens are expected to attend the Power Camps. A vast majority of the campers reside in Lancaster County, including the Garden Spot, Cocalico, Ephrata, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg areas.

“Some are repeaters who want to keep coming back,”

said Roth. “They’re kids who love sports. A majority come from Christian homes. Some are amazing athletes. They’re looking for a fun, safe, godly experience.”

The Power Camps are staffed by 15 to 18 experienced coaches, many of whom have coached on the scholastic and collegiate levels. The coaches are ably assisted by more than 40 huddle leaders, local high school students, some of whom competed at power camps when they were younger.

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Roth. “We don’t just pick any coach. We want coaches who understand the sport. They’re working with high school students and elementary kids. They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking to build their confidence and foster their love for the sport.”

“I love to see the high school kids (huddle leaders) I worked with kind of do for others what I did for them,” she added. “Just helping (campers) grow in their relationships with God. What I hear the high school kids say is that they love to tell the campers about Jesus.”

FCA’s Power Camps were started in New Holland in 2018, with 50 campers.

Part of an international, nonprofit, interdenominational ministry, FCA was established in Lancaster County in 2016 and currently maintains an office at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim. The local Power Camps are modeled after FCA’s Middle-Atlantic Competition Camps for students between the ages of 13 and 18, which this year are being contested from Monday, June 29, to Friday, July 3, at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

“Power Camps have been a wonderful way to introduce Fellowship of Christian Athletes to Lancaster,” Roth said.

LBC Sets Dance Concert

The Lancaster Bible College (LBC) Dance Company will perform a dance concert on Sunday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel, located on LBC’s campus at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s an opportunity to peruse the art, and some of the artwork will be for sale,” said Hess. “The reception is phenomenal. Everyone’s there - a majority of the student artists, teachers, administrators, family and friends. A number of the resident artists will be there because they love supporting the young art-

Band Concert to Focus on Marches

The New Holland Band will present the third edition of “The Art of the March” on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Once on campus, attendees should follow the directional signs.

The program will concentrate on the marches of John Philip Sousa, known as “The March King.” It will include some of Sousa’s most well-known compositions, including “The Black Horse Troop,” “El Capitan,” “Hands Across the Sea,” and “The Thunderer,” along with Sousa’s arrangement of “The Honored Dead.” The band will share the stories behind the compositions. Sousa composed more than 125 marches.

On display at the Brownstown campus of LCCTC’s art show will be several hundred examples of the students’ work in two-dimensional mediums like photographs, paintings, drawings and screen printing and in three-dimensional mediums like metal workings, papier mâché and digital creations. The work will be presented as exhibits in spacious hallways and on oversized television monitors.

“The name, visual arts, gives it away,” said Hess, a resident of New Holland.

“It covers a multitude of disciplines in the industry of art. It’s a visual medium for sure.”

“Art is a reflection of our society and what’s going on in our society at the time,” added Hess. “It’s a medium to communicate what’s on your mind. Art is a great way to reflect what’s on your heart and relay it in a different way.”

The artwork on display

will represent more than 100 Brownstown campus juniors and seniors interested in the visual arts of interactive medium and web design, photography and digital imaging, commercial art, and digital design and print media. The students come from all 16 public school districts in Lancaster County.

“These students are hoping to get a job or go on to secondary education,” said Hess. “You’ll be blown away by their talent. People will say, ‘Wow. This is high school?’ And they’ll say it time and time again. Kids don’t always find success at their academic schools, and they come into class at LCCTC and it’s about what they want to do. They blossom here. These kids are a little different. They want to focus on art, and they can do that here.”

“I can’t tell you how many times parents have come up to me and said, ‘Wow. My kid’s never been on the honor roll before. What’s going on?’” Hess continued. “(The students) meet people with

similar interests, and it’s just a whole new world to them.”

After conducting the event at a different venue for a few years, the student art show moved to Lancaster Art Vault in 2025.

“The owner, Victoria (Abadir), was all about it,” said Hess. “It’s really great how she helped us out.”

Located at 231 Snyder Road, Ephrata, Brownstown is one of four campuses operated by LCCTC. The Brownstown campus offers nearly 60 full-day and half-day programs in areas like construction, welding, medical and dental professions, agriscience and transportation.

“In every class at LCCTC, we’re teaching students to be successful in industry,” said Hess. “The youths of today are the futures of tomorrow, and anytime we can encourage them the better. This is how we do it on the art side.”

The money raised through Friday’s event goes directly toward these programs.

“Our mission is to empower people, connect resources and build community,” Green said. “We do that from birth through elderly.”

Green said that the ministry attracts residents from all over the area, beyond Pequea Valley,

as far west as Lancaster city and as far south as Oxford. The ministry regularly gets people in from New Holland, Strasburg and Leola. If there are resources located closer to where somebody is from, Factory Ministries redirects people to those resources.

Festival to Highlight Choral Music

The Lancaster Festival of Voices will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26. Organized by Music For Everyone, the festival highlights the power of the human voice to connect people and build community. The festival started in 2013.

On April 25, the festival will highlight Orfeia Women’s Vocal Ensemble, which performs traditional music from Bulgaria and across Eastern Europe. The group’s traditional Balkan music features unusual dissonances, unique rhythms, and lush harmonies.

At 3 p.m., Orfeia will lead a public workshop at James Street Mennonite Church, 323 W. James St., Lancaster. The session is open to anyone interested in

exploring Balkan vocal styles, regardless of experience. There is a fee for the workshop. Orfeia will perform in concert at James Street Mennonite Church at 7 p.m., joined by the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. There is an admission fee.

On April 26, the festival will continue with a free concert at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., at 3 p.m. The program will feature local choirs, including Here Comes Treble, the Pequea Valley High School chorus, Vocal Harmonix, Anything But Quiet, and the Music For Everyone Community Chorus.
