“It’s a way to get the community together, but we’re mainly doing it as a fundraiser,” said Wes Kopp, a Garden Spot Fire Rescue Station 39 captain. “It’s just nice to make
the community happy. Everyone appreciates it.”

Healing Is the Point of Acupuncture

It’s natural, nontraditional and minimally invasive. It uses tiny pains with the goal to lessen, treat and even cure big pains.
But perhaps the most important element to know about acupuncture is that it aims to unlock the sometimes-underestimated strength of the body’s own healing powers.
“The body itself is pretty incredible. The body is very smart,” said Dr. Ashley LeClair, a Pennsylvania licensed acupuncturist who operates Lititz Acupuncture, 1555 Highlands Drive, Suite 103, Lititz, with her husband, Dr. John Marino. “We meet the patient where they are to help them feel better when they walk out of here.”
The physical act of acupuncture involves inserting between four and 12 thin needles - about three hairs in diameter - into a relaxed patient in an inclined position. Sometimes the needles are inserted into the areas being treated, and other times they are inserted in different parts of the body.

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 is in the education business, and at least two of its programs are specifically designed to prepare young people for the workforce.
“For these students, work is
especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years. “For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

“After a long intake, conversation and a pattern diagnosis, we choose the points and have the patient in a position where they’re comfortable,” said LeClair. “We want you to relax as best you can. We have to create points that help that purpose in that moment. It’s detailed to every individual. The pain doesn’t last; once the needle is

A Taste of New Holland’s namesake originates from the dozen food trucks that will be on hand, providing patrons with a wide assortment of delicious hot and cold dishes. Many of the food trucks are operated by local owners, and most of them are native to the New Holland area.
Friday evening at A Taste of New Holland will feature bingo, other games, and prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Saturday is country day at the festival and will include a live broadcast by radio station WIOV, country line dancing featuring Boot Scootin Becky from 2 to 4 p.m., and a performance by Clifton Bryan Country beginning at 5 p.m.

More than 500 residents of New Holland and surrounding areas are expected to attend A Taste of New Holland. Last year, Garden Spot Fire Rescue made $14,000 from the event.
“We’re looking to make more this year,” said Kopp. “The money goes into a general fund and goes toward purchasing gear and tools. We need to do our jobs.”
A Taste of New Holland was started in 2020.
“It began with food trucks in our parking lot,” said Kopp, “and everyone seemed to love it. Since then, we started getting live music and we added bingo.”

Garden Spot Fire Rescue also conducts an annual fund drive through the United States Postal Service, an annual flower sale in April and an annual Christmas tree sale around the holidays.

More than 100 community members are involved in the operation of Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 80 of whom are active running members.
“They’re normal people in the community who volunteer countless hours of time,” said Kopp. “They’re public servants.”
Overseen by a nine-member board of directors, Garden Spot Fire Rescue was formed in 2013 through the merger of the former Liberty Fire Company and the Blue Ball Fire Company. Station 39 maintains and operates 10 pieces of apparatus.

work immersion programs and three school-to-work programs, all secondary transition programs created to teach specific work skills and soft skills and prepare students for life. The programs are designed for students with intellectual and learning disabilities.
“We do a lot of modeling,” said Guatta. “Work ethic is difficult to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”
Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete.
Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. town, Willow Valley Communities in Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.
One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.
“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school, and the goal is to get them employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”
Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs. The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13.
Students are referred by their home school dis -
tricts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.
“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful.
Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”
Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and mentors from participating business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.
Success breeds success.
“I see (students) come to
us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”
One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 serves as a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.
“We talk about work worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum at LancasterHistory will host an April Nature Series event, “Leaf and Learn: A Celebration of Arbor Day,” on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster.
A variety of activities will be available. Lancaster County senior naturalist Lisa Sanchez will lead tree walks at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Len Eiserer will present “Tanger’s America250 Tree and the Patriot Oak” at noon. The Nodding Onion Band will perform post-rock music featuring electrical frequencies from plants from 10 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments will be available while supplies last, and vendors will offer information from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids’ activities will include a story time and craft, suggested for those ages 3 to 7, at 10 a.m. and a nature scavenger hunt, suggested for those ages 6 to 12, at noon.
A bitternut hickory tree (Carya cordiformis) planted in commemoration of the United States’ 250th birthday will be dedicated at 11:15 a.m. The bitternut hickory was selected due to Lancaster’s ties to hickories. When settlers arrived in the Lancaster area in the 1700s, hickory trees were prevalent, earning the town its first name, Hickorytown. Hickory forests were vast and thick and cultivated by local Native Americans for food and medicinal purposes. The tree was instrumental to early life in Lancaster, also providing wood for furniture, flooring, and tools. All events are free and open to the public. The event will take place rain or shine, with most programs held outdoors in fair weather and moved indoors in the event of rain. “Pain isn’t our enemy; it’s your friend,” said LeClair. “It’s a signal from the body, ‘Hey, something’s off.’ You have to befriend it to observe it.”
Acupuncture is used to treat a wide assortment of ailments, everything from chronic back pain, chronic neck pain and chronic shoulder pain to Lyme disease, nausea and arthritis and from stress, insomnia and headaches to inflammation, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture can also be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.
“In general, acupuncture is used for pain,” said LeClair, a resident
of East Petersburg. “The pain can be external, the pain can be from trauma or the pain can be from the overuse of muscles. It’s not just one type of ailment; it’s anything and everything. We don’t treat cancer, but we help people get through cancer.”
“I have seen people walk out and be totally different,” continued LeClair. “I have seen patients trying to figure out what’s going on and using acupuncture. I’ve used acupuncture on patients for fertility. (Our bodies are) constantly changing and growing older.”

With the reopening, the historical society has introduced a new feature exhibit, “The Many Faces of Freedom,” which focuses on the Revolutionary War and how it affected the lives of everyday citizens in the Cocalico Valley. On display are many items indicative of the war effort, including typical gear that would have been used by a member of the militia, an original pay receipt, copies of fines paid by non-Associators who chose not to fight, and the uniform of a sharpshooter.
The exhibit also shares detailed information on the military hospitals at Reamstown and Ephrata; a complete list of men in the Cocalico Valley who served; detailed information on the Anabaptist community, which opposed the war on religious grounds; and reproductions of clothing that area residents would have been wearing at the
time of the Revolution. Also highlighted throughout the museum’s permanent displays are artifacts from the 18th century that were locally used or produced.
Finally, a diorama of the Ephrata area, circa 1776, will be shared between the HSCV and the Ephrata Cloister. When it is on-site at the HSCV, guests will be directed to the education room of the library to view this scale model of a 4-by-2mile area with the Cloister settlement in the center.
The exhibit opened to the public in March, but an official grand opening will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Berks County native and Revolutionary War re-enactor Sam Leamer will be in attendance. Leamer has been interpreting history for over 20 years, and he has shared his knowledge at dozens of historical sites, including the Ephrata Cloister and Cornwall Iron Furnace.
