Team Jennifer Cahill To Hold First Fundraiser

fter disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over.

By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation.

“I thought how awesome it would be for others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the Reinholds Fire

The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment.

Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon.

Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources.

He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses.

“We will offset final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female veterans. Mike pointed out that when most people

According to Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, the connection between the organization and Anchored Ministries in Elverson began in the spring of 2018 with a weekly newsletter called the Macaroni Kid. Barbara Vargas, then the editor of the newsletter, reached out to CrossNet. “(She) mentioned a clothing ministry,” recalled Kerstetter, noting that the ministry was Anchored Ministries.

Steps to Success, which provides preschool and day care services in Leola, has always run a summer camp, but this year, camp will be held off-site at Leola Elementary School, 11 School Drive, Leola.

Along with a new location, Adriana Witman, director of school-age programs, has planned a variety of activities and theme weeks to hold the interest of children who attend.

Special events and day trips that will tie into themes will include a visit with Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a trip to see Disney’s “Descendants” at the Dutch Apple, a possible field trip to an amusement arcade, and regular visits to the Leola Park Pool. Witman also hopes to connect with Sea World in Florida to take part in a virtual education program about whales or stingrays, with opportunities for students to ask questions.

Jake King and Amy Wissing, two of the organizers of the Hand-inHand Fire Company mud sale, are grateful for the volunteers who take part. “The community support behind this thing …” said King.

“It’s astounding,” Wissing finished for him. “There are so many people involved who are not firefighters and don’t have family members who are firefighters.”

The mud sale, an outdoor annual consignment auction that was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, will take place this year on Thursday, June 24, and Friday, June 25, and will feature five auction blocks. In addition to carriages, antiques, collectibles, plant nursery items, tools, and more will be up for bids. On June 24, food will be served beginning at 3 p.m., and the auction will take place from 3:30 to 8 p.m.

On June 25, the auction will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As in the past, the auction will be located in the large field along Route 340 across from the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant. The GPS address for the location is 338 N. Ronks Road, Birdin-Hand.

Wissing shared that pizza and wings will be available on the night of June 24. King noted that the auction blocks will feature antiques and collectibles, crafts, plant nursery items, flowers, small tack, and tools, along with field rows. Wissing pointed out that field row items are often unusual or unique. “(Items) could be equipment, old windows, old furniture. There are major treasures sometimes like iron statues and anvils,” she stated, adding that old Salvation Army uniforms have been among the finds.

King said the June 25 auction will begin with antiques, collectibles, and field row items. He noted that tack, other horse-related items, and plant nursery items like flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. “Scattered throughout the day will be crafts, mini horses and ponies, furniture, and carriages,” he said.

Wissing noted that the furniture that goes up for bids often includes a mix of old and new items and that often larger donated items are featured. “If people keep some items aside while they’re spring cleaning and bring them to the sale, that would be wonderful,” said Wissing.

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. Her purpose for the virtual 2021 fundraising gala she is currently planning is to show that to the Lancaster community. “(This gala is) for people to really be able to see that Cavod is not just about dance and theater,” said Dienner. “This is a community where people come and support one another and see their kids grow.” In her current role as executive director, Dienner witnesses that growth. “We see (students) come out of their shell and learn disciplines,” she said.

Cavod will hold its virtual gala on Thursday, May 6. The preshow will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the show, which will be hosted by Vinnie DePaul and auctioneer David Keller, will be streamed from Rock Lititz at 7:30 p.m. Dienner noted that the event will feature a variety of entertainment, including

live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble.

Among the many entertaining presentations, Dienner was especially excited about a segment where DePaul will question young Cavod students in a feature reminiscent of Art Linkletter. “We are filming Vinnie asking children from Cavod what they like about Cavod,” said Dienner.

Keller will auction several experience packages during the event, and viewers will be able to bid online or by smartphone. While Dienner noted that most of the items will be surprises, she shared that Darla’s Hair Care and Spa in Intercourse has donated a day in the salon that will include pedicures, manicures, and massages.

LMHS To Present “All The World’s A Stage”

Now, the two ministries partner regularly for the community meal at CrossNet Ministries held the fourth Monday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. A clothing trailer from Anchored will also be at the Blue Ball Elementary Community Connection event on Thursday, May 6, at the school on Ewell Road in East Earl from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The trailer will also be present at three upcoming CrossNet events at the youth center, including the 2021 backpack giveaway on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the winter coat giveaway on Monday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the Christmas gift giveaway on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Anchored story began in 2016 when Kanter was studying fashion and praying for God to use her. “I wanted to be the hands and feet, so I prayed for direction,” recalled Kanter, who saw God tap into her love of clothing by giving her a passion to put clothing in the hands of the homeless and others who could not afford it.

“One day, I decided to collect clothing and take it to the streets of Reading and hand it out,” stated Kanter, who borrowed a trailer and took 82 boxes of clothing to the city to give away.

“In July 2017, we received a trailer,” reported Kanter. The ministry now has four trailers, including one sporting air conditioning and heat. The inside of each trailer has been converted to hold clothing on racks, and each one is stocked with clothing for newborns through adults, along with shoes, toiletries, and blankets. Personal shoppers are available to help find sizes and styles. Kanter said that the trailers are at events between four and eight times per month.

Anchored is more than a clothing ministry. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which is located at 40 S. Chestnut St., Elverson, recently worked with Twin Valley School District to provide Easter baskets and meals to 21 families and 60 children. Hoping to fashion Anchored on the CrossNet model, the organization holds a backpack giveaway, Christmas gift giving program, free community meals, and more.

CrossNet now accepts clothing for Anchored Ministries at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kanter noted that clothing should be clean and in good condition without blemishes or excessive wear.

Shoes, blankets, and accessories are also accepted along with toiletries.

According to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of

acting and added singing and dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).”

“All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Shows will be staged on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,

Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets, and they are welcome to bring picnic lunches to create their own dinner theater experience. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be presented between the skits.

Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity.

“In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring.

Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel.

noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies.

Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters.

“Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch.

Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.”

Fish Story: Second Blue Skies Fundraiser Scheduled In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will present “Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts,” an exhibition featuring recent works by the college’s Center for Creative Exploration students and members of the Garden Spot Village community, curated by Aidan Thackray, Class of 2022. All featured artworks were created by students and faculty of the Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D. In early 2021, residents of the Garden Spot Village community were invited to participate in a series of online workshops focusing on watercolor, collage, Notan design, poetry, and automatic drawing.

The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass.

According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year.

“We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.”

storms, and nearly lost their farm. “It’s in the book,” Tom said often during his interview when asked about the particulars of an experience.

By the time Tom was 12, he had lived in three different homes. He began working as a farm hand for Chester Landis in the Greenfield area before moving in with the Weaver family in Conestoga at the age of 15. He finished high school at what was then ManorMillersville High School, graduating at age 17. In the fall of 1958, he met Gerry, who lived in Bird-in-Hand, at the New Holland Farmers Fair. They married in 1961.

In 1963, Tom bought a Conestoga farm, borrowing money from two of the women who had cared for him as a child. He and Gerry raised tobacco, cows, chickens, hay, corn, and five children (four girls and a boy).

In 1972, Tom was ordained as a Mennonite minister, and for the last several years, he has held a Sunday morning Bible study in his home.

Tom is known for his love of trains. At 4 p.m. each day, a toy train on an elevated rail makes a trip around the Grassels’

farmhouse kitchen. In 1999, a one-foot gauge railroad became part of the landscape of the farm. “One of my friends called me and told me he bought a railroad engine,” recalled Tom. The train, which includes a mile of track and a tunnel, became a fixture at a yearly July Fourth celebration held to raise funds for the Conestoga Fire Company. Tom reported that one event attracted 7,000 people and 1,800 rode the train that day.

The shelves of the Grassel kitchen are lined with painted carvings of all types and styles, all completed by Tom, who is self-taught. The figures range from cartoonish horses to members of the Plain community and more. Conestoga wagons with horses or mules are a specialty of his.

Tom called the book “Through My Eyes,” and on the last 10 pages, he gave friends a chance to speak about his life through their own eyes. “I could not have lived without friends,” said Tom. Copies of Tom’s books may be purchased at the Conestoga Wagon Restaurant, 2961 Main St., Conestoga.

In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractortrailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program.

Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.”

Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29.

The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members of the Plain community, will include an a capella concert, a banquet, and

guest speaker Daniel Beiler, who spent two years in Iraq working with refugees and local government officials. To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary to attend the May 28 event, email admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227.

Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a by-donation concert will be held.

Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

Participants may bring annuals, perennials, shrubs, rooted cuttings, vegetable plants, seeds, bulbs, vines, trees and houseplants to share with others. The plants should be in containers and labeled with growing instructions if possible.

“People have been coming for years for the plant swap.

We have local neighbors and people in the community,” said Dawn Ekdahl, HPF executive director. “We have a lot of people who bring really nice plants from their gardens that you may not find anywhere else - heirloom or unusual or expensive. If they have more than they need, they pot them and bring them. We have some nice surprises.” She noted that local nurseries have also been known to donate annuals for the plant swap that people may take home with them.

As people arrive on the day of the event, they will be directed to tables where they can place thier plants. theables will be marked with different categories such as sun perennials, shade perennials and herbs. “At 6:30 p.m. when the tables are full, I ask everyone to pick their one favorite plant that they really want,” Ekdahl said. “Once we do that, people can help themselves.

Generally we ask people to take as many (plants) as they brought. If there are leftovers, it’s anybody’s game.”

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has planned its 17th annual bicycle ride for 2021, dubbing it the Ride for the Community. Club member Steve Bareuther noted that in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 ride was postponed and then finally canceled, but this year, the ride is set to go live.

This year’s Ride for the Community will be held at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 8, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and checkin between 7 and 9 a.m. The event will follow Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines, and it will be held rain or shine.

Formerly called the Literacy Ride, the event was renamed to better reflect the many community organizations that benefit. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, so the club offers four routes - a 10-mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43-mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. beverages, snacks, lunch, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders.

Since 2018, the Rotary Club has partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. This year, a Shred Event Fundraiser will be held in the park from 9 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the ride.

Bareuther said that this is an opportunity for community members to clean out their basements and file cabinets and make a donation to the club at the same time. Club president Bill Weik noted that shredding by Marco Technologies will happen on site

and that 100% of the donation will go to the club.

Beginning in 2019, the club offered a more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals involving both the club’s Literacy Ride and the car show that members hold in the Neffsville Park each September. Through fundraisers, the club supports a number of local organizations.

Weik noted that recent contributions have included scholarships for Manheim Township students, grants to United Disability Services, and funding for the Lancaster Early Education Center playground area.

Rotary Bike Ride Planned For The Community

A dinner fundraiser to support mission work in Haiti will take place on Friday, April 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland. Takeout and dine-in options will be available. A Haitian meal, including rice and beans and a dessert, will be served. The event is open to the public.

The event is an offshoot of a dinner fundraiser launched eight years ago

LCAA Project Seeks Entries Artists of all ages and levels of experience are invited to enter their Lancaster County inspired artwork in the Lancaster County Art Quilt Project at Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. This art exhibit, contest, and fundraiser is open to professional and hobby artists age 6 and up.

Prizes will be awarded in children, teen, and adult divisions. The deadline to submit artwork is Sunday, April 25.

The subject of the artwork should be a location in Lancaster County. Drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, mixed media artworks, or works in another medium can be submitted. Small 3-D works no larger than 10 inches by 8 inches will be accepted as well. Image size of any 2-D work should be 5 inches by 7 inches with a 1-inch border to allow for matting.

Artists should submit work unmatted and unframed.

LCAA will mat all work for uniformity and display the artwork in a quilt-like pattern in the galleries.

Artists may donate as many pieces as they wish. There is no fee for entering. Cash prizes will be awarded. Members of the public will vote for their favorite artwork for People’s Choice Awards.

The Lancaster County Art Quilt Project will open on Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continue

through Thursday, June 3. A reception and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Haiti from pg 8 Trish was raised in the larger Holmes County area of Ohio and met Lenord Bonnegre in Haiti over 21 years ago. They married in 2010.

Together they launched Restoring Lives Ministry to serve the Haitian people through church activities, pastoral training, and providing education to youths and children.

The ministry’s goal is to bring freedom, deliverance, and hope to the people of Haiti.

Lenord felt he was being called to ministry in his late teens.

Although the call to the ministry was clear, he was unsure how he

should go about following it. Eventually, he began exploring how he could serve people in the United States and use these efforts as an avenue to raise funds to help his own people in the village of Passé boi d’ormes (pronounced “pawsbwadom”) in Haiti.

Most of the food for the upcoming fundraiser will be prepared in the same style that Lenord grew up with. Donations will be accepted to benefit the ministry.

Despite their three-goal surge in the second half, the Garden Spot Spartans came up short in a 9-5 final.

With the loss, the Spartans fell to 1-3 on the year (0-2 league). The match was close at halftime with the Mountaineers holding a 4-2 lead.

Garden Spot’s offense was led by Emma Gruber, who recorded a hat trick. The other two scores came courtesy of Brielle Moyer, who also notched an assist, and Gwen Varley.

Diana Redcay also dished out an assist as the Spartans compiled 12 shots on goal.

In Spots’ goal, Lexi Horning faced 20 shots and made 11 saves.

The next two matches were feast or famine for the Spartans, who improved to 2-4 with the split of their matches on Monday and Wednesday.

Moyer scored the single goal in a 20-1 loss to Twin Valley on Monday.

In the non-league contest, Horning and Olivia Scarle split time in goal with Horning grabbing two saves and Scarle recording seven.

The Spartans headed to Daniel Boone for another non-league contest on Wednesday, coming away with an impressive 16-6 victory.

The Spartans out-shot the Boone attack 23-8 with Scarle recording the victory in goal.

Moyer, Varley and Gruber each poured in four goals while Emily Ferris scored two times. Redcay and Ashton Gonzalez each netted one goal and Jasmine Vilay contributed with one assist.

VOLLEYBALL In a Section Two showdown, the Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team blanked Ephrata on the road on Thursday evening, April 1.

The first two sets ended with nearly identical scores as the Spartans (4-0, 2-0 league) peaked at 2516 and 25-17 before sweeping the Mountaineers 25-19.

Tyler Martin and Derrick Lambert each had a solid match. Martin served up five aces and led the way in digs with 19 while Lambert racked up 10 kills. Jordan Martin distributed 30 assists. Joseph Sharp, Griffin Witmer and Jack McCarty each registered one block.

In a non-league match on Monday, April 5, the Spartans finished close in two of the three sets, but lost to Palmyra 3-0. They gave the visiting Cougars a tough fight in the first set before falling short 25-23. The third set was also close at 25-21.

Lambert had a team-high six kills. Tyler Martin and Chandler Xiong each served two aces while Martin added nine digs and led the team with 17 assists. He also tied Witmer in blocks with three.

TENNIS The Spartans suffered a 7-0 loss at Cocalico on Tuesday, falling to 0-3 in the L-L League (1-6 overall).

The Eagles won each of the singles matches in straight sets. In the number three singles, Dylan Esbenshade hung tough against Alex Neustadter in a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.

Cole King and Ani Kukarni faced Alex and Nicholas Neustadter at number three doubles with the Cocalico brothers winning 8-2.

That example has been set for Garden Spot’s softball team this year as the Spartans have shown in their three victories thus far.

“Allie King, who leads off, and Sydni King are at the top of the lineup,” explained Kimberly King, the Spartans head coach. “It brings everybody up when they see the other girls hitting the ball hard. It brings up the confidence level. It helps the attitude at the plate. I’ve seen it this year.”

That attitude helped Garden Spot with a solid offensive output in a 12-2 victory over Octorara on Monday, April 5.

“We had a little bit of a slow start, but scored two runs in the first inning,” King said. “We started playing much better, scoring two more in the third inning - four in the fourth and four more to end the game early.

It was nice to end the game in five innings with all the games on our schedule back-to-back.”

King had Allie King pitching for the first time. The senior, who is typically an infielder, came through with a win.

“It was nice having someone else pitching with three games in a row this week,” King said, referring to resting Amelia Mercado for a day.

“It was great to have Allie get a win in her first game pitching.

“She walked her first two batters and that was all,” added the coach.

Sydni King had two hits and four runs batted in. Allie King also had a pair of hits. Brittney Esh added a hit as did junior Emma Royle.

The Spartans came up short against Governor Mifflin on Tuesday in a 4-2 final.

“All week we’ve had good pitching and good defense,” King said.

“We were pretty solid. It was just one of those games where things did not go our way - lucky hits by the other team or great catches by them when we hit the ball hard.

“All week we have been hitting the ball hard - even if they were being caught,” King emphasized.

The Spartans bounced right back with a 4-2 Section Three win over Elco on Wednesday at home.

LCHS Dives Into “The Little Mermaid”

When Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) musical, looked into securing the rights for a spring show that the school would be able to stream, she did not know that her choice of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be met with intense student enthusiasm.

“This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a

mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world.

BOYS LACROSSE Garden Spot played host to Twin Valley in a Monday evening non-

league boys’ lacrosse match. The Spartans’ scoring trio of Zane Fisher, Gavyn Naranjo, and Logan Lesley each put up two goals. But Twin Valley’s Ryan Scheivert scored six times as the Raiders went on to win 15-6.

Goalie Gabriel Myer made 16 saves but Garden Spot fell to 0-4 on the year.

In an L-L League April 1 match at Ephrata, the Spartans were on the losing end of a 17-4 final. The Mountaineers’ Brock Boyer scored six times. Naranjo and Lesley scored twice each for the Spartans.

Wagner has been directing rehearsals for the 46 students in the cast, crew, and orchestra. She noted that the students’ masks make it harder for her to judge the work of the ensemble, but she praised the singers in the lead roles and noted that many members of the small orchestra will need to play more than one instrument during the performance. Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge.

During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters. “They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

In recognition of April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Lititz recCenter will host its third annual Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle on Saturday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be limited to 25 attendees so that guests can be well-spaced for comfort and safety.

The event will feature a free forum for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease. Attendees will meet experts who are local professionals working in Parkinson’s disease and related fields. Information about fitness for Parkinson’s recovery, speech therapy, wellness and massage, and residential living services will be among the information and resources shared.

Fitness programs that Lititz recCenter offers for Parkinson’s wellness will be showcased, and individuals and their partners or caregivers will be provided an opportunitity to try elements of regularly offered programs. Attendees are encouraged to dress in comfortable clothing to participate in a light exercise demonstration of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) classes.

RSB at the Lititz recCenter is in its third year, and the program has doubled in number of participants. RSB is led by certified coach and personal trainer Erica Johnson, who is Lititz recCenter’s fitness coordinator.

This program is focused on maintaining functional health of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Largescale movements and smaller muscular control are both engaged throughout the classes, which incorporate boxing routines. RSB is supported by trained volunteers who seek to help each participant get the most out of classes regardless of physical ability.

The Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle is free to attend. Staff and guests are asked to wear face coverings while participating in the program.
