Garden Spot

Afew years ago, a group of area food truck owners teamed up with Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) and held an outdoor event. The food fest and fundraiser netted $5,000 for GSFR. Recently, Nick Good, chief of staff and public information officer for GSFR, was asked if it might be a good idea to hold a similar event. “I said, ‘It was a success,’” recalled Good. “It started rolling from there.”

of attendees. The fundraiser will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the GSFR hall will be available for indoor seating.

“It’s where local food meets community support.”

The Taste of New Holland Food Fest will be held in the GSFR parking lot, 330 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, April 26, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 27, from 3 to 8 p.m. Special Kids Hour activities will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 27. More than 10 food trucks will be on-site, and live music will be provided for the entertainment pleasure

Food trucks that will be in attendance will include Castanedas Food Truck, Hen House Grilling & BBQ, Piper Belle’s BBQ, and Skip’s Food Truck. The Garden Spot Fire Rescue food trailer will be on hand selling oyster sandwiches, and the New Holland Lions Club will sell ham and cheese sandwiches. Snack items will be provided by NiCE SiZE FRiES and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. Sweets will be available for purchase from Lickity Split Ice Cream, Mr. Mini’s Tasty Donuts, and Lorah’s Handmade Chocolates. Noel’s Café coffee trailer will be present on April 26. Organizer Danielle Landis said that the plan was to incorporate as many local food trucks as possible, adding, “It’s

where local food meets community support.”

According to Good, Kids Hour activities will all be fire-prevention related. GSFR Captain Wes

Kopp noted that the smoke trailer and fire house will be on-site. Fire trucks will be on display and bucket rides will be available. “We will dunk the fire chief (in a dunk

tank),” added Good. Airbrush tattoos and face painting will also be offered. Live music for the event will be provided by Hit Show with

There are a few roadside springs in the greater New Holland area. One popular site is located in the Welsh Mountains, bordering both the Pequea Valley and ELANCO school districts.

While some local residents utilize the spring regularly, the safety of drinking the water from any roadside spring is worth questioning. “People assume the water (from springs is) tested, and it’s not,” said Linda Saad,

senior member of the ELANCO Source Water Collaborative. “But you could test it, and animals could (defecate) in it four hours later. It’s not a closed system.”

Saad has a degree in forestry with concentrations in soil science and water resources. Formerly, she worked in water testing at a local lab, where she oversaw the water quality program and the quality of the testing programs.

Book signing planned at Fairmount

Tim Rogers and Megan Shertzer, father and daughter co-authors of the book “Beechdale Road,” will share their story on Wednesday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Fairmount Homes in Ephrata. The event will be held in the Farm Crest Community Room Chapel at 1100 Farm Crest Drive on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Copies of “Beechdale Road” will be available for purchase and signing, and the program is open to the public.

The story behind the book began when 18-yearold Linda Stoltzfoos of Birdin-Hand was kidnapped on Beechdale Road on Sunday, June 21, 2020, and later murdered by Justo Smoker. Shertzer is Justo’s niece, and Rogers is Justo’s brother-in-law. “Beechdale Road” is their attempt to share their story of grief, anger, and pain, but also the grace, kindness, and mercy of the

Amish community. Shertzer works as an adult advocate at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. She was recently married to her husband, Tanner.

Rogers has served as lead pastor at Grace Point Church of Paradise for more than 20 years. He is active in various community roles, including coaching basketball. He has been married to Jen for more than 25 years, and they have three children and one dog.

Water Resources Program team leader with Penn State Extension, backed Saad up, saying, “Because roadside springs typically emerge from aquifers very close to the ground surface, they are highly susceptible to contaminants from whatever is happening on the nearby landscape.”

Fetter mentioned human waste from septic systems and contaminants from agricultural operations, along with other waste systems, noting, “(These) pose one of the greatest risks, as they carry fecal coliform bacteria and other gut pathogens that are frequently found in the waters of roadside springs.”

Fetter’s comments are supported by the results of a study, which will be repeated this year. “In our 2013 study of roadside springs in Pennsylvania, 91% of springs studied had coliform bacteria in them,” reported Fetter. “(Nearly 100%) failed at least one of the drinking water standards that public water supplies are held to.” The upcoming study will explore additional potential contaminants. “Many roadside spring pipes were installed a very long time ago and have the potential to be lead-based,” commented Fetter. “We do see very

high corrosivity in roadside spring water, which means that springs are likely to leach lead from those pipes and contaminate the water in those cases.”

“If it’s near a road, it could pick up oil, antifreeze, and petroleum products,” added Saad.

Saad went on to point out that many people who have been drinking water from a particular roadside spring for years believe that water is safe. “The assumption that because you have gotten it there all your life and had no problems (doesn’t hold water),” said Saad, who noted that contaminated water is a danger to infants with digestive systems that are not fully developed, elderly people, and those with compromised health. “If you’ve been getting your water from a spring and have

not faced a contamination issue, it does not mean that the water is safe or couldn’t become contaminated at any point.” She relayed stories of individuals who have had issues with biological amoebas but suspected the flu or food poisoning rather than the water. She noted that parasites are a concern as well.

Fetter elaborated on Saad’s comments about the sensitivity of some individuals to contaminants. “Individuals with strong and healthy immune systems are much more likely to fight off pathogens from all sources before they become full-blown illnesses,” Fetter explained. “Infants, elderly, and immune-compromised individuals typically feel more significant effects from pathogens like bacteria and parasites.” Fetter also noted that lead

contamination can impact children more during their early developmental stages.

Fetter added that contaminants are not detectable by human senses. “They have no color, no smell, no taste. Spring water, or any water, can appear crystal clear and still be incredibly harmful to your health,” she stated.

Saad cautioned that investigating the area near the spring for possible contaminants may lead to a false sense of security.

“You may walk the area and not see the water above ground, but you don’t have any idea how far back it surfaces or whether it surfaces in heavy rain or during seasonal events,” she said.

Program to help refugees join workforce

Lancaster-Lebanon

Intermediate Unit 13’s

Community Education program, in partnership with Church World Service and the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, recently received a $1.05 million federal grant to develop an Employer Engagement Program (EEP) aimed at helping refugees resettle.

The grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement Grant (ORR), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, will provide the partnership $350,000 of federal funds per year for three consecutive years. It was one of 31 grants awarded nationwide in 2023. ORR provides new populations with the opportunity to maximize their potential and critical

resources to assist them in becoming integrated members of American society.

Refugees and immigrants play an increasingly larger role in the region’s workforce, and they served on the frontlines during COVID-19 in industries such as health care, food service, and child care.

EEP partners will work with employers in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties to create pipelines to jobs and career pathways for the successful hiring and retaining of refugees in their workplaces. The grant will engage employers in maximizing the skills and talents new neighbors bring to the workforce, create opportunities for staff members to improve their English skills, offer employer-supported training and leadership development,

and create more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces.

Church World Service

South Central PA plans to help 600 refugees resettle locally this year. The EEP and its employer partners will help these future workers make the United States their permanent home, given that, as refugees, they are not able to return to their native countries.

Event to showcase zines

The second annual Lancaster Zine Fest will be held on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St. After a sold-out first fest that attracted hundreds of attendees, the event will expand to two floors at Southern Market and feature more than 60 independent artists and writers showcasing a variety of self-published works.

Zines, pronounced “zeens” - short for magazines or fanzines - are self-published booklets that often feature alternative perspectives and collaborations. Zines have a rich history within underground culture and provide a grassroots form of expression for artists to share their ideas with a wider audience. Heidelberg Brass Band plans

Polka Mass and more

The Polka Mass, a fastpaced worship experience first performed in 2015 by the Heidelberg Brass Band in New Holland, will return to Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, April 7, at 10:30 a.m.

Community members are invited to attend.

The Polka Mass, first written by a Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. Frank Perkovich, was developed into a full worship service with upbeat hymns with lyrics written by Lisa

Beard. The first Polka Mass performance, the culmination of hundreds of hours of work by a small group of musicians, was held in honor of the band’s current director, the Rev. Glenn Beard Jr., on his 25th ordination anniversary.

The 2024 anniversary year is particularly special for the band’s drummer, Glenn Beard, who is Glenn’s Jr.’s father. He has performed consistently with the band for 70 years.

In 1954, Glenn Sr. and brothers Jim and Bob, plus George Kock and other musicians from Lancaster and Berks counties, formed the small band now known as the Heidelberg Brass Band. The ensemble’s original purpose was to perform at local church picnics, Pennsylvania Dutch dialect plays, and Memorial Day parades. The band continues to participate in Memorial Day parades, give concerts, and play for church and service organizations’ functions

members to learn about the most immediate volunteer needs.

Ervine learned that social services program manager Danielle Kissinger who runs the Getting Ahead in a Just Getting By World and the Money and Me classes, is in need of child care volunteers and people who are willing to bring meals to the classes, which will be held on Monday evenings through May 13.

Ervine also reported that drivers are needed. “Our transportation ministry is always looking for volunteers to drive people,” Ervine stated. For adult riders, requests from women are sent to female drivers and from men to male drivers. Volunteers are needed to drive both adults and children. All transportation volunteers must have had their driving records checked, and they must have undergone the required clearances.

Amy Marburger, manager of the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center, said that she is in need of volunteers to pick up food

throughout the year.

The band will officially celebrate its 70th anniversary with a concert at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico Road, Ephrata, on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m.

Members of the public are invited to join in the celebration, which will be held

program donations at area locations, including stores and farms that donate to the food pantry. “The days (for this volunteer task) vary each month. There’s no set schedule,” noted Ervine. Food items that are picked up are then delivered to the back door of the Food and Nutrition Center at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland.

Youth center manager Sarah Ortiz is looking for volunteers to hang out with youths in seventh through 12th grades on Wednesday and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the youth center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. “It’s building relationships and spending time with (the students),” noted Ervine.

CrossNet mentoring and education director Julia Bills told Ervine she is in need of mentors for the program. Mentors, who serve both children and adults, focus on the positive change that can come from developing a mentoring relationship. Volunteers should be patient, flexible, open to learning, and

Wilson Banjo Co. has several Top 15 roots music singles and a couple of International Bluegrass Music Association award nominations to its credit.

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-year-old son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that run on electricity instead of steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history. In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968. Rocky Springs Park reopened more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the nuclear accident at Three-Mile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake

Lansing Park in Michigan the following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the Dentzel Carousel Company.

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel

Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel family and photos of the ride that have never been published before. On Jan. 29, 2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half

in the near future.

“I am very fortunate to have the film,” Gregg said. “The first half of the film shows the carousel in operation, and some of the scenes are of the carousel’s final day of operation that took place at the end of the 1998 Christmas season.”

For more information or to find out when the next film screening will take place, search for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.

Lancaster Moves will hold community fitness sessions

Routine exercise is widely regarded as one of the best ways for people to stay healthy yearround. In addition to its many physical benefits, an active lifestyle and outdoor activities are effective ways for individuals to strengthen both their mood and their immune system. Lancaster Moves, an outdoor fitness program created by Samantha and Andrew Gerberich of Willow Street, seeks to offer Lancaster County residents an opportunity to reap the rewards of outdoor exercise while simultaneously bringing the community closer together.

“You can’t replace getting together with people and being outdoors,” Samantha said. “Fresh air has so many benefits: boosting energy and mood, decreasing stress and getting Vitamin D from the sun.”

Lancaster Moves will launch its first series of events on Saturday, April 6, at Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St. The kickoff will begin at 9 a.m., and it will include an hour of cardio exercises and bodyweight workouts designed to suit participants of all fitness levels. Additional sessions will be held on Saturdays, April 13 and 27, at Village Park, 800 Village Road, Lancaster. All April

sessions will be free to attend.

Samantha and Andrew’s decision to create Lancaster Moves was partially influenced by the couple’s shared passion for working out. Samantha works full time as a nurse, and Andrew’s career is in the accounting world; in their free time, the husband and wife participate in fitness programs at their local gym. Since their gym primarily offers indoor activities, Samantha and Andrew often workout in their own backyard, and they started to consider ways they could establish a consistent program for the whole community. In

addition to their active lifestyle, Samantha and Andrew both have educational backgrounds in fitness; Samantha has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and Andrew studied sports management in college. Andrew also has several years of experience as both an athlete and a coach.

Samantha and Andrew were also inspired to create Lancaster Moves as a way to honor Andrew’s late grandfather, Charles Gerberich Sr. Charles joined the Lebanon YMCA through its scholarship program in 1937, and he actively volunteered to teach after-school

programs there for many years. Charles also frequently covered membership fees for children whose families could not afford them. Samantha and Andrew plan to donate 10% of all profits from future Lancaster Moves programs to YMCA youth scholarship funds. “Andrew has this vision to give back, and we’re hoping to carry on his father’s legacy,” Samantha said. “Our goal is to continue to offer outdoor sessions at different locations throughout the county.”
