Whether he’s directing a mystery or a musical, Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) director Josh Martin offers student actors one specific piece of advice. “I always tell them with any show, (to) tell a story, and there are many stories and lessons to be told through the different character arcs (in ‘Into the Woods’),” said Martin. “It’s not just singing and dancing and jumping around and having a good time. There’s a lot of heart (in this show).”
GSPA will present the family-friendly, full-length musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine in the Stan Deen Auditorium at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 11, 12, and 13. Shows on April 11 and 12 will be at 7:30 p.m., and the show on April 13 will begin at 2:30 p.m.

In the summer of 2024, Bill Gable, treasurer of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), was contacted by William Keen of Lancaster. Keen had purchased the back bar and mirror from the Blue Ball Hotel before the edifice was torn down in 1997.
“(Keen’s) plan was to use it in a tavern he was hoping to open in Lancaster,” explained Gable, who noted that when Keen’s plans were not realized, the 17-footlong cabinet, with an accompanying 10-by-5-foot, 500-pound

follows the Baker, played by Luke Canales, and his wife, portrayed by Lila Albertson, who wish to break a curse that has interfered with their ability to have a child. They are joined on stage by Cinderella, played by Morgan Watt, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival, as well as Jack, played by Liam Gill, who wishes his cow would give milk. The show intertwines multiple fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm with other characters including Little Red Riding Hood, played by Genevieve Adamow; Rapunzel, played by Emma Rohrbaugh; and the Witch, played by Jenna Zueno.
According to Martin, the tale revolves around the dreams of the many characters. “The whole story has to do with wishes and getting what you wish for,” he explained. “Act I ends with happily ever after, (but) Act II is where we explore what happens after happily ever after.” Martin noted that the lesson is wrapped up in

For more than a decade, CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center has been handing out something extra to area families for Easter. For the last several years, the food items, which include ham, potatoes, and some extra fixings for an Easter dinner, have been distributed from a van parked in the corner of the Friendship Church parking lot adjacent to the CrossNet facilities.
This year, the Easter meal distribution will take place on Monday, April 14, from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. at the Food and Nutrition Center, 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland. Those who cannot make the April 14 distribution may receive food items on Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday, April 16, during their regular appointment times. Food and Nutrition Center manager Amy Marburger informed clients who had appointments at the food pantry on Tuesday and Wednesday to just pick the Easter meal items up with their other groceries. “I told them not to make two trips because gas is way too expensive,” explained Marburger. This year, Marburger and her

helpers will be handing out 150 hams purchased at a discount from Yoder’s Country Market and 150 5-pound bags of potatoes, donated by Shady Maple Farm Market, and 150 dozen eggs. Also included in the giveaway will be rice, canned vegetables, canned fruit, and gravy. Bags filled with candy, canned soups, noodles, and more are donated by Our Lady of Lourdes Church as part of the organization’s Lenten Collection. “(The church does) this for Easter and Thanksgiving,” noted Marburger.
This year, the Food and Nutrition Center is planning to serve 150 families with Easter meals. “Last year, we served 145 families, 495 individuals, and we made 11 home deliveries,” said Marburger. “We saw a large increase across all the food programs during the last half of 2024,” she added, noting that the ministry was still seeing a higher number of recipients in January. Marburger noted that while numbers
usually drop somewhat as spring approaches, she anticipates the need to continue because of the high price of food. “The food stamp dollar doesn’t go as far,” she pointed out. For this reason, Marburger predicted that the Food and Nutrition Center will be in need of certain items. “We are always looking for condiments, pancake mix, syrup, crackers, and snacks,” she said. All donated items must be unexpired. Marburger noted that the center is also in need of non-food items, which are not donated often. “The biggest things
we are always looking for are personal care products, feminine hygiene, and paper towels,” she shared.

Mennonite Life posts events
Mennonite Life will host a screening of the documentary “Seven Points on Earth” with author and researcher Royden Loewen on Tuesday, April 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event will take place in the Visitors Center theater at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.
Mennonite Life is joining a global faith community in commemorating the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism in 2025. Mennonite Life will explore the movement’s history at events throughout the year.
“Seven Points on Earth” studies the lives and family histories of seven Mennonite farmers in seven communities: Apollonovka in Siberia, Matopos in Zimba-
bwe, Riva Palacio in Bolivia, Margorejo in Java, Friesland in the Netherlands, Washington County in Iowa, and the rural Municipality of Rhineland in Manitoba. The film considers the environmental history of each context, focusing particularly on the relationship between faith and topics such as climate change, state policy, and global markets.
The 55-minute film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with author Loewen, whose research inspired the production of the documentary. Loewen is a retired Canadian history professor and chair in Mennonite studies at the University of Winnipeg. He is the author

the fulfillment of a dream and what that might lead to. “These themes recur in the context of getting what you wish for is not always getting what you want,” he said.
Among musicals, “Into the Woods” presents complications in both its story and its lessons. “There are many story lines that converge,” Martin pointed out. “There’s humor …there’s heart … there’s some thought-provoking drama.” When choosing the show, Martin knew he would have a strong ensemble cast, but he also was aware of where the musical would stretch the students. “I thought it would be a good challenge for these kids,” he said. “(‘Into the Woods’) is a more complex show to rehearse, digest, and perform.”
Martin added that he thinks the students are enjoying “digging into the emotion and literary themes,” but he noted that their youth and perspective can make it challenging to express the depth of their characters. “It’s hard when you have limited life experience to take on with sincerity some of the heavier themes of this show,” he said. “This doesn’t mean they aren’t capable, but they don’t necessarily have the full context of what it means to experience loss and heartache.” Although much of the show is lighthearted, it does take a serious look at marital and parental and child relationships. “It’s something for (students) to sink their teeth
into,” said Martin. As a musical, “Into the Woods” is known for more than 20 songs, including the familiar “Giants in the Sky,” “No One Is Alone,” and “Children Will Listen.” “The princes who sing ‘Agony’ are funny,” said Martin of the comedic song sung by Cinderella’s and Rapunzel’s princes. Martin conceded that the music is also complicated. “The lyrics are beautiful and poignant, but they are tricky,” he stated, adding that he emphasizes the importance of memorizing and articulating to enhance audience understanding. Martin noted that while the music is not simple, he has been impressed by cast members’ willingness to tackle the score with enthusiasm. “I encourage them to hit the ground running,” he stated, noting that the solos and duets require initiative to learn. “Generally speaking, they are rising to the occasion and doing that,” he said.
Martin wants audiences to be aware that the show is different from GSPA’s spring 2024 musical presentation of “Shrek.” “When I picked this I thought it seems similar to ‘Shrek’ - an enchanted forest filled with mixed-up fairytale creatures - but in terms of the lesson, the morals, the complexity, the depth, and the difficulty, (it’s very different),” he said.

mirror, sat in a garage for nearly 30 years.
Now, that piece will be part of a special event dedicated to the history of Blue Ball that NHAHS will hold in the Steve Loewen Community Room, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. “It’s a drop-in,” said NHAHS board member Ida Gall. Light refreshments will be served. At 3 p.m., a multimedia presentation will be held. The presentation will include photos of the recent relocation and restoration of the back bar, along with other interesting information about Blue Ball, an unincorporated community located in the area surrounding the intersection of Routes 322 and 23 in East Earl Township. Other NHAHS artifacts related to Blue Ball will also be on display.
“We are inviting people to come and share memories and stories about the Blue Ball Hotel and the bar,” said Gable. “Some folks have some good stories to tell that might be interesting.” Gable added that the stories will be recorded for the NHAHS digital archives. “We certainly aren’t going to shut them up until it gets real late,” he added with a chuckle. “If people are here having a good time, I will stay until 6 p.m.”
Moving Keen’s donation to the new community room was no easy feat. “It probably took until January until we were sure we could get it in here,” explained Gable.
NHAHS vice chair Wilbur Horning said that the move was a cooperative effort involving the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Wood Shop, MartinCFS, and NHAHS volunteers. “We contacted the Wood Shop before we agreed to accept (the back bar),” noted Horning. Wood Shop members Lloyd Ziegler, Arthur Johnsen, and Larry Knepper responded. Their first task was to look at the piece where it was located in a garage in Lancaster. In November 2024, the Wood Shop members examined the pieces. “We saw it was in good shape, but it was grimy,” noted Johnsen. “It sat in a bar 100 years with soot from a coal furnace and people smoking.” Once the Wood Shop members saw that the piece was solid enough to be moved and reconstructed, they reported to NHAHS. “I said, ‘Yeah, we can put anything back
together,’” recalled Johnsen. The Wood Shop members advised NHAHS on how to restore the lower cabinets, while taking the countertop to GSV, where it was restored with a filler piece added where a cash register cutout had existed. In addition, the Wood Shop members created wall anchors so that the heavy mirror could be hung and added a piece of molding along the bottom where the mirror met the bar.
MartinCFS moved and stored the pieces at a significant discount, helping to fit the two pieces of the back bar through the doors and into the new community room at NHAHS.
Gable has also put together articles detailing Blue Ball history from area newspapers, including the Ephrata Review and The Clarion. He noted that a few mention the
turtle soup served at the Blue Ball Hotel.
Also on display in the museum is the blue ball that hung at the hotel. The owner of the hotel, D. Martin Zimmerman, put the ball in storage in a local barn until 2007, when it was sold at auction. Although Horning and others attempted to purchase the ball, it was sold to an antiques dealer. The following week, members of the historical society spoke with a local business owner who noted that his mother always told him, “That ball belongs to the community.” Funds were subsequently raised to purchase the ball.
Horning and Gable also recalled details about working for the Blue Ball Bank, which was located in the brick building diagonal to the hotel before moving to Main Street in Blue Ball.
“The bank was founded in 1906,” noted Horning, who said that Bill Weaver, who served as CEO of the bank for many years, lived on the second floor of the building with his family. “At night, he cleaned the bank. He was the janitor and the cashier. He did everything.” Horning recalled that Weaver used a yellow pad to complete bank business ranging from loan applications to employment interviews. “He had a legal pad he used for everything,” he stated.
The NHAHS Museum is open each Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no admission fee. Information about NHAHS is also available at https:// nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook or #NHAHS on Instagram.
