Garden Spot

Journey to 1,000 points

Growing up with two older brothers who played basketball and a father, Steven Conrad Sr., who coached Spartan Youth Basketball, Jace Conrad, now a Garden Spot High School (GSHS) senior, has no memory of the first time he picked up a roundball. “As far back as I can remember, I had a basketball in my hands,” stated Jace.

A moment Jace will never forget, however, happened on Jan. 28 when the GSHS boys’ varsity basketball team played against the Solanco High School team. Going into the game, Jace knew he needed 8 points to reach a high school career goal of 1,000. Not far into the second quarter, Jace scored his 1,000th point. “I got a rebound from my teammate from the corner,” he said. Jace took a 3-point shot, and he sunk

it. “I just remember that the play was in slow motion,” he said. “As soon as I took that rebound, it was just me and the ball,” Jace stated. “It brought me back to being a kid shooting by myself, and I saw the ball go straight through the hoop.”

During the next few seconds, pretty much everyone in the gym erupted in celebration. “When it happened, I raised my hand up, and I smiled,” Jace remembered. “My teammates ran to me.”

Officials paused the game for a celebration, which included the presentation of a banner made by fellow students in Jace’s graphics class and T-shirts made by his brother Steven Jr. The T-shirts sport a photo of Jace and “1,000 points” on them. As happy as the celebration made him, the best was still ahead. “My favorite part was going to my parents,” he said. “Just the look on their faces - the love and the motivation for the

Days of Lafayette

According to Ben Webber, Manheim Township Historical Society president, many people under the age of 40 years old know little about American Revolutionary War hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, and yet a full-length portrait of the French noble hangs opposite that of George Washington

in the United States House of Representatives.

Webber will share his knowledge of the unlikely patriot as part of a New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) presentation at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. The event is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Lancaster Inferno encourages female players to take soccer to next level

It’s really all about providing opportunities for girls and young women. The Lancaster Inferno motivates females to take advantage of opportunities and to make the most of them.

For the Inferno, soccer is more than a game; it’s a transformational tool.

“Our goal is to empower these girls and women and use soccer as a platform for the development

and growth,” said Stephanie Cleaves, executive director of the Lancaster Inferno and the head coach of the club’s first team. “Eighty percent of female CEOs played sports. It’s our goal to develop not just the athletes but the individuals as future leaders and to build confidence. Having female role models is very important to that.”

game. I couldn’t have done it without my brothers, (Steven Jr. and Ryan),” Jace added.

Jace’s first experience with organized basketball was as part of the Upward program for preschoolers. He next played Spartan Youth Basketball at the Brecknock gym, experiencing championship seasons with both junior varsity and varsity teams in the program. Along the way, Jace had some coaches and trainers who inspired him to work harder. He trained with former GSHS player Todd O’Brien (also a 1,000-point scorer) and with Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Coatesville program coach Ricky Hicks. However, he also credits his mother, Shereen, with pushing him when he was tired and not moving quite as quickly as usual. According to Jace, that does not happen too often. “My favorite part is waking up every day and knowing I can pick up a basketball,” he said. “I enjoy every part of it,” he added, noting that he works on dribbling and shooting daily. “Consistency (is key),” he pointed out. “What you put into it is what you get out of it.”

With a total of 1,093 career points, Jace is number three of seven GSHS students who have reached 1,000 points. The top scorer is Curtis Waltman, with 2,689, who coached Jace in varsity basketball this year.

In addition to securing his 1,000-point status, Jace has had a few unforgettable moments growing up in a house where basketball was an important focus. “I had the honor of playing (at GSHS) with Ryan, which is awesome,” said Jace, who also recalled scoring 21 points in a game against Lebanon as a freshman and winning a game against Warwick with the GSHS team when he was a sophomore. “We weren’t supposed to beat them,” he reported, adding that this year and last, GSHS came back to beat Ephrata in both of the team’s second matchups. “I have so many memories you can’t erase,” he stated.

While Jace has had many memorable experiences

playing basketball, he has other interests and hobbies as well. “I love clothes,” he stated. “That’s one of my favorite hobbies.” He added that he and his girlfriend of two years enjoy hunting for outfits at thrift stores. “We know each other’s style, so sometimes we shop for each other. That’s always fun,” he said.

In the realm of sports, Jace’s interest has not been confined to basketball. He has played on the GSHS football team, and he also dabbled in lacrosse and baseball when he was younger. Those interests may serve him well in the future. Jace plans to continue his basketball career at Albright College in Reading, where he will pursue a degree in physical education with a goal of being a teacher like his dad, who teaches in the Coatesville Area School District. “I interned at Brecknock Elementary, and I found a joy in teaching kids about physical health,” Jace said.

Jace also looks up to a few specific professional players. “I watched players like Derrick Rose, and my family loves Kobe Bryant,” he noted, adding Michael Jordan is a Conrad family favorite as well. “When I applied what I learned (from watching them) to my game, that’s when I started to love it,” he said.

SkillsUSA is not “just a club” to members of the Willow Street chapter.

Several students who attend the Willow Street campus of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) believe the organization offers a chance to be part of something special.

Natalie Yang, a medical assistant student from Garden Spot, said the group has organized 25 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need, provided a holiday meal for LCCTC students and faculty, and sponsored a hat and mitten tree with the clothes collected donated to Water Street Mission.

“SkillsUSA is important because as a student who has been in multiple clubs before, SkillsUSA has been the most beneficial for me,” said Ky Logan, who is a veterinary assistant student from Elizabethtown. “It has helped me grow socially and build connections with others who have fields of studies in different areas or

Lancaster County history, but he first became interested in Lafayette when he met Kathleen Hood at a living history day at White Chimneys in Gap. “(Hood) has been leading the charge on planning Lancaster County events (related to a celebration of Lafayette),” explained Webber.

Lafayette was not yet 20 when he came to America from France with some military training and a passion for equality. The teenager offered his services and resources to the Americans, becoming a major general at the tender age of 19. “He does pretty well as an officer,” noted Webber, who added that Lafayette eventually convinced the French government to join in the war effort by sending the French Navy to America’s aid. “(Lafayette) was extremely idealistic,” noted Webber, adding that after the Revolution ended, Lafayette became disillusioned with America’s failure to abolish slavery and offer equal rights to women. He returned to France where he became involved in the French Revolution.

In 1824, at the invitation of President James Monroe, Lafayette, age 66, returned to the U.S. to complete a farewell tour. “(Lafayette) comes back for 13 months, and he travels 6,000 miles visiting each of the 24 states in existence at the time,” said Webber. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of that event, a re-enactor is traveling the U.S. and visiting the places Lafayette stopped at on the dates that correspond to Lafayette’s journey. “In July 1825, (Lafayette) comes through Gap and through Paradise to (what is now) Lafayette Tower Park,” stated Webber. “He was on Route 30, known as the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike at the time.”

The troop muster held in East Lampeter Township attracted 5,000 people, and it was so well remembered that a commemorative stone and plaque were placed in the park in 1934. According to Webber, the re-enactment of the event on Sunday, July 27, will feature members of local Scouting organizations and the Sons of the American Revolution,

along with area bands.

“The Lafayette Fire Department will use their ladder truck to lift (the re-enactor) up so he can talk to everyone,” shared Webber.

In addition, to telling Lafayette’s story, Webber’s presentation will put the spotlight on the re-enactment of the farewell tour and the number of events associated with it. He noted that a nationwide organization called Friends of Lafayette is organizing and publicizing events, and he recommended visiting https://lafayette200pa .org for more information, including videos; a schedule of events; tickets; and educational resources for libraries, schools, and homeschoolers. “It’s all kinds of really cool stuff,” commented Webber.

Webber is grateful he became involved in celebrating the anniversary of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour. “I began doing research, and the more I got into it, the more I loved it,” said Webber, who will take part in a LancasterHistory panel held on Thursday, March 20, and is scheduled to give several more presentations in addition to the one at GSV.

Garden Spot High School’s indoor track team completed the 2025 indoor season on March 2 with two athletes qualifying for the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor State Championship at Penn State University. Franchesca Severino qualified in high jump, and Sadie Stubbs qualified in long jump. Severino finished 14th, jumping 5 feet, 1 inch. Stubbs finished 10th, jumping 17 feet, 5.25 inches, a new personal record.

Five athletes also qualified for the PTFCA Carnival at Lehigh University on Feb. 8. Stubbs finished 12th in the 60-meter dash with 8.32 seconds and medaled in long jump, placing fifth with 16 feet, 11.25 inches.

The indoor track team competed at six other allday invitationals hosted by Alvernia University, Franklin & Marshall College, Bucknell Univeristy, and the University of Pennsylvania, including the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League Challenge. Athletes competing at the L-L League Challenge included Justine Dixon, Aubrey Good, Hechler, Izzy Holland, Emerson Moore, Wynne Kelly, Stubbs, Landon Freidel, Michael Good, Gabe Hoover, Jonathan Kauffman, Andrew Pemberton, Jaden Rodriguez, John Steiginga, and Jarrett Waltman. This invite allowed the Garden Spot team members to compete against student-athletes from fellow L-L League schools.

The indoor team was led by coaches Devon Lewis, sprints; Trevor Lehman,

jumps; and Cera Gaston, distance. The sponsors were Garden Spot Dental Care, New Holland Shell, and Hershey Surveying. The team is transitioning to its outdoor season. Lancaster Inferno from

Lancaster Inferno Football Club (F.C.) is a one-of-akind academy that promotes female soccer and its benefits. The program revolves around a series of competitive and instructional age-group teams, each more advanced than its predecessor.

There are financial fees associated with each level of the Lancaster Inferno academy.

“When it was initially launched, we wanted to provide a place for highlevel talent to play,” said Cleaves. “That evolved into wanting to have a feeder system for the top teams. We felt like there was a need to create a club that was all girls, making female athletes the top pursuit. Girls drop out of athletics at age 14 at twice the rate of boys. We’re trying to buck that trend.”

Presentation to focus on mill

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will present “Examining the Connections Between Technology, Geography, Culture and Family as Seen Through the Perspective of the Ressler Family at Mascot” on Wednesday, March 26, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.

About 245 female athletes from all over Lancaster and Lebanon counties, ages 9 to 36, populate the Lancaster Inferno academy’s 12 teams - two highly competitive pre-professional teams and 10 youth teams. Some of the older players are former college and local high school stars, some are current high school players, some play soccer with other teams during other seasons and some are relative newcomers just starting to appreciate the game.

The Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth teams practice at Spooky Nook Sports Complex and play some of their games at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. Cleaves’ first team,

which is made up of the program’s most advanced and competitive players, will be playing five home games at Penn Medicine Park, the Lancaster Stormers’ home stadium, during the 2025 season after calling Warwick High School home last year.

“They are serious players who want to take their games to the next level,” said Cleaves of the first team members. “They’re also players who want to be keep playing at a high level. It’s usually players who see themselves playing professionally; that’s who’s on our first team. We kind of fill that gap between college and pros.”

Many of the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth programs are year-round ventures with games contested during the spring and fall seasons. The Lancaster Inferno first team plays a 10-game regular season schedule in the pre-professional United Soccer League (USL) W League from May to July.

“We’re really big on professionalism, just how we run things. We take pride in how we run it,” said Cleaves. “We’re a team for the community. When I tell that to players, it excites them. (The older players)

want to be role models. It’s our goal not only to attract the best players, but also to develop them.”

Cleaves and her family purchased the franchise that would become the Lancaster Inferno in 2014. Six years later, the Lancaster Inferno founded an under-23 women’s premier team, and in 2022, the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth program was launched.

“My favorite part is seeing the young players interact with the senior team players,” said Cleaves, a resident of Lititz. “They look starstruck, like, ‘That could be me some day.’ It really impacts you.”

“Seeing that there’s exciting opportunities is huge,” continued Cleaves.

“(Players are) learning from experienced coaches. Some could go on to be professional players or coaches or referees. It’s about developing them as confident individuals in life. It teaches them life lessons and about the spirit of soccer. We want to make it an option if they want to play at a higher level.”

For additional information, go to www.lancaster inferno.com.

James Landis, executive director of the Ressler Mill Foundation, will explain why the historic Mascot Roller Mills and Ressler Family Home welcomes 3,000 visitors each year. Attendees will hear the story of the water-powered grain mill and the family that preserved it.

The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are accessible via the alley behind the church.

For more information about the historical society, visit www.cocalicovalleyhs .org or call 717-733-1616.

In the case of inclement weather, the historical society will follow the Ephrata School District’s closing decision.

Sara Rager, an aspiring patient care technician from Manheim Township, stated that being part of SkillsUSA has helped her improve her grades.

“We get to come together and form something special,” said Sara. “That’s why I feel like it’s so much more than a club, as Ky said. It has helped each individual, especially me, with thriving and striving for what I want.”

One of 21 Willow Street campus students who competed in the SkillsUSA district competition, Sara finished first in extemporaneous speaking to earn a trip to the state competition, which will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 2 to 4, in Hershey.

At districts, Sara was given five minutes to do research for her speech with the topic, “How has responsibility made you grow in SkillsUSA, and why is it important?”

“I told them about my experiences in SkillsUSA and how I work with a team,” Sara said. “In the past, I’ve had a hard time

working with a team, and now, I’ve worked with a lot of intelligent minds and brilliant people, and we can come up with a lot of great ideas.”

Grace Wagner, a dental assistant student from Solanco, also finished first at districts and will compete at states.

“I’m super excited, looking forward to my state competition,” said Grace. “I’ve been working very hard, studying hard recently for that, and I’m excited to see what the outcome will be.”

Grace said she joined SkillsUSA because of the advice of her instructor Rachel Sprecher. “I had been having thoughts about doing it before, but I wasn’t too confident,” said Grace, who is considering returning to LCCTC for postsecondary education. “I decided to listen to her advice, and I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’m very grateful that she encouraged me to do that because I feel like this (club) is going to lead to very large opportunities for my education and my future.”

Britney Valentin, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, attended the state delegate conference on March 5 at the Dauphin County Technical School.

SkillsUSA

from pg 8

It’s a Central Region workshop to prepare delegates for the procedures and events at the April state competition in Hershey.

“Being a delegate means to have an important role in helping shape the future of SkillsUSA,” said Britney. Mason Houser, a diesel equipment and technology student from Lampeter-Strasburg, competed in districts. “I wanted to test my skills, how quickly I can do tasks, and to see how much I actually know,” said Mason. “I chose the CTC for the diesel program. My uncle worked in diesel as a semi-truck operator, and I grew up on that (and thought), ‘Hey, I want to do this.’”
