Working together to repair ELANCO A stitch of Whimze
BY ANN MEAD ASHBackin 2007, Trent Davis, founder of Servants Inc., began offering Home Helps in York County, using home repair skills to help families in need. A little over a decade later, Servants expanded into Lancaster County and partnered with CrossNet Ministries, completing five projects in New Holland in 2021.
At the same time Servants Inc. was beginning to help New Holland families, five churches in the East Earl area - St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, Bowmansville Mennonite Church, Bethany Grace Fellowship, Terre Hill Bible Fellowship Church, and Vibrant Church in Terre Hill - began working together using the name CONNECT 2021.
“This was a community outreach to meet some of the needs of residents and homeowners who needed some help with their properties,” reported Gene Pierce of Bethany Grace Fellowship. The group held a training and kickoff session in July 2021. “Following several months of planning, (CONNECT 2021) conducted a successful week of service work with 20 student youth and more than 20 adult volunteers,” said Pierce, who noted that nine planned and three contingency projects were completed. Contributions from participating churches and local merchants made it possible for the group to perform repairs, maintenance, and cleanup work at no cost to recipients.
Group members were excited about the success of the first work
outreach, but unsure how to move forward. “We changed our name to ELANCO CONNECT with plans to continue,” said Pierce, but he noted the group was stymied by planning and logistics.
In the fall of 2021, Pierce said, group members first learned about a partnership between CrossNet in New Holland and Servants Inc. “(Servants Inc.) had hired a project manager to specifically meet the needs in the ELANCO community,” said Pierce, who added that ELANCO CONNECT members took part in informational meetings at individual churches and began to encourage members of those congregations to volunteer. “The idea was that when we had volunteers available, projects could be planned,” said Pierce.
In October 2022, five volunteers from area churches and a Servants Inc. project manager held a workday in New Holland. “Servants Inc. was able to do the things that we were not good at,” said Pierce, who listed planning the job and managing the logistics of having people, tools, and materials available.
Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet ministries, said that CrossNet is thankful for the help. “We are grateful to partner with ELANCO and Servants Inc. to help families in our community with home repair,” she said. “Seeing families have ramps added or new flooring put in to help improve their living situation is a blessing to our community.”
Moving ahead, Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants Inc., said that plans are underway to enhance the partnership in the ELANCO area. “We just finalized dates for a mini work camp,” said Cotton, who noted that the camp will be held from Thursday, April 27, to Saturday, April 29, and that St. John’s Center United Church of Christ in East Earl will serve as the host site. BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Linda Binder was growing up in Bowmansville, she learned to play the piano and the organ, and around the age of 11, she learned to sew in 4-H. Her musical talents led Linda to become the organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland for more than 40 years. The latter talent also led briefly to a
job in a sewing factory, which inspired Linda to go to cosmetology school and open Studio 1 Hair and Skin Care Center in New Holland, a shop she ran for more than 30 years.

In 2017, Linda closed her shop and took an extended motor home trip with her husband, Tom. When she returned to her home in Ephrata, she was interested in exploring a See Whimze pg 5

First Recovery Auction planned
BY ANN MEAD ASHLanny Millette, donor director with The Potter’s House, remembers that pastor Jaime Santiago of Restart Training Center Ministries (RTCM) contacted him a few years ago about holding a fundraiser together as a show of unity among recovery ministries in Lancaster County. “It’s bigger than one ministry,” said Millette, who noted that Slow Down Ministries, which helps provide vehicles for graduates of Christ-centered programs like Potter’s House and RTCM, has joined in the effort as well.
The Lanco Recovery Benefit Auction, which will include live music,
food vendors, and a candy drop, will be held at 320 N. Ronks Road, Bird-in-Hand, on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on Aug 4 and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5.
Currently, organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of bands, food, marketing, and more, and for businesses and individuals to donate new items to be auctioned. Among the new items Frank Gaston of Slow Down Ministries has gathered to go up for bids are motorcycle parts and accessories, parts for off-road trucks, and a bicycle. “We would accept gift cards, vacations, or a dinner for six in a home,” said Millette.
See Recovery Auction pg 2
To provide entertainment between live auction sets, Santiago has lined up family Gospel folk groups from Ohio that he said are wellknown in the Lancaster area. On Friday, groups include Dan and Amanda Esh, the Brandenberger Family, and Matt &

Nimmie. The Brandenberger Family will play again on Saturday, along with Conrad Fisher, Broadway, and Endless Hallelujah Band. A candy drop is planned for late Saturday morning or early afternoon.

“One of our purposes is to let people know this is a unified effort of several minnistries wanting to help each other,” said Millette. “Right now, we are hoping individuals and businesses will stand with us as sponsors.” He added, “(We are looking for) people who find joy in helping those who can’t help themselves.” The Potter’s House provides a safe place for men and women to recover from addiction, experience Christ-centered discipleship, and embrace their God-given destiny. RTCM has a mission to change the lives of men with addictions by introducing them to Jesus and helping them process past trauma to deal with problems in a healthy way and become positive members of society. “We are there to give people a leg up with a desire that they become contributing members of the community,” said Millette. “We all benefit from that.”
Readers who are interested in sponsorships or making donations to the auction may call Gaston at 717723-7253, Santiago at 717304-3341, or Millette at 717-919-0316.

Adult Sports League takes off

“We are always adding programs and creating opportunities,” said Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. During the winter, the organization added the Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League to its offerings for adults with disabilities. The league joined existing sports programs such as the Chuckie Magee Flag Football League, which began in the fall of 2022. Paskoff pointed out that Challenger Little League of Lancaster County is available in the spring. Challenger has given individuals with special needs a chance to play baseball each year for nearly three decades.
After the flag football program attracted 20 members who participated in regular games at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on
Saturdays from August through early November, Aaron’s Acres organizers wanted to offer a winter program, dubbed Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League. “We started it at the beginning of February,” said Paskoff, who noted the program has been held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church on Fruitville Pike, with the last installment set for March 18.
“We opened it to adults ages 21 to 40 as with the flag football,” explained Paskoff. “We didn’t know if they would like kickball or soccer or floor hockey, so we did two weeks of each.” The rotation began with kickball, which some of the participants had never played before. Next, the program featured soccer and is finishing with floor hockey.
Halfway through each session, the group took a break for a
snack. More than 20 participants and four volunteers took part. “They loved kickball. It was so much fun,” said Paskoff, who noted that in the future, she hopes to have more volunteers at the sessions.
Because of the short duration and number of volunteers, parents of participants are required to remain at the venue. “It gives the parents time to mingle and (network),” said Paskoff, who noted one participant’s mother had moved to the state only recently and was able to learn about resources from other parents. The participant was happy to take part in the activity. “He’s very social, and he was so excited to be with other people,” said Paskoff.
Because of the success of the flag football league and the winter sports programming, Paskoff said, Aaron’s Acres
plans to hold the programs again. “It’s just continuing the mission of providing meaningful programs to people with disabilities and expanding the ages,” she said.
“It’s another opportunity for individuals with disabilities to be together for social time and
also be physically active, and it gives families times to connect.”
Aaron’s Acres holds a sixweek summer program to serve about 200 children with disabilities. In the summer of 2022, the camp moved to New Holland, and Paskoff said the organization plans to hold camp in

FCA to host Power Camps

new challenge.Linda was looking for a simple cotton skirt, and she could not find what she wanted. Although she had not touched a sewing machine in 30 years, she decided to make the skirt. She purchased a new Swiss-engineered sewing machine she nicknamed Nina. “I started with clothing because that’s what I knew,” recalled Linda.
When a neighbor girl wanted a doll, Linda made her one based on a pattern, but then she decided to get a little creative. Linda changed up the design, adding “long, funky” legs. Eventually, she added joints to the legs so the colorful creatures could sit up and hang from shelves. She called them Whimzes, and the dolls were the impetus for a new business, which now includes divided cloth baskets, microwave bowl holders, reversible placemats, aprons, a line of tote bags, zip-top pouches, wallets, pillows with matching throws, ponchos, and soft hassock-like items
called poofs. “The throws are made of the softest, heaviest fleece available,” said Linda.

Choosing colorful fabrics in a variety of textures is one of the delights in making different items, according to Linda.

“That’s part of the fun of it,” she said, adding, “Everything I do is unique.” Linda sells her creations in a few locations, including Lorah’s Handmade Chocolates in Brickerville, the Artful Nest in Marietta, and Junk to Jazz in Reading, as well as at craft fairs. She has also created a Facebook page that can be found by searching for “WhimzeGal.”
Linda has now made hundreds of Whimzes, along with all the other one-of-akind items she makes in her home workshop. On her Facebook page, she shows some of her new items and tells the stories of how she came to create them. She gives credit to Tom for his love and help. “It’s because of support from him that I can do this,” she said.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host Power Camp, a faith-based sports day camp for children ages 8 to 12. Power Camp uses the platform of athletics to share the Gospel and grow the faith of young athletes. Each day will include sportspecific training from local high school and college coaches, speakers, and biblical discussions led by high school FCA athletes.
Camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Camps will be held from June 12 to 15 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products poses an
additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.
Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Born and raised
BY WENDY ROYALWe are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the secondranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County
farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.
Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Parry sisters tie for second in Districts 200 IM
By Ara Grigorian

One thing the organizers of the District Three Swimming & Diving Championships did not have organized was what would happen in the highly unlikely chance that two swimmers would both earn the same medal.

That was what happened with Kayla Parry and Mia Parry, who competed in the girls’ District Three Class 3A 200-yard individual medley event at Cumberland Valley High School on March 3. Kayla, a Garden Spot senior, and Mia, her freshman sister, both posted a time of 2:07.07 while Hershey’s Sydney Stasz won the gold with a time of 2:05.52.
“They had an epic swim in the 200 IM that brought gasps of

amazement to fans in the balcony as well as the coaches and other swimmers around the pool deck,” Garden Spot coach Darin Parry explained. “I was told this was the first time two siblings tied for second place in an event at districts.
“I had a coach comment, ‘That is the best outcome for any parent to have when siblings are swimming against each other,’” Darin, the proud father and coach, added. The two sisters were competing with and against each other.

Kayla also took to the pool for the 100-yard butterfly. She finished third in just 57.60 seconds, earning the bronze medal.
“She put up her fastest time in over a year in the event,” Darin noted.

Speaking of the medals, Darin explained, “Kayla has the silver medal; Mia’s will be mailed to her in the coming weeks.”
In addition to sharing the silver medal, Mia earned fifth in the 100 backstroke in 58.34 seconds.
“She swam another personal best in the event, which she had just done at leagues a few weeks ago,” added the coach.

The Parry sisters along with Zach Delgado and Peter Hasse competed at Cumberland Valley. For Garden Spot, the boys swim in Class 2A while the girls compete in 3A.
Hasse, a senior, finished eighth (2:07.44) in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:02.48.
“Peter had two very commend-

able swims to finish his high school career,” Darin said. “Peter will be missed next year.”

Delgado had two excellent times, finishing eighth in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with respective times of 22.66 and 49.73 seconds.
“Both those times were personal bests,” Darin pointed out. “He was able to cut time in both events to earn eighth-place medals. Zach has shown a real hunger and drive this season to get faster by cleaning up technical errors and attacking each of his postseason swims.”
The two Parry sisters along with Delgado qualified for the PIAA State Swimming Championships at Bucknell University.
Though most schools arrived at Cumberland Valley on the team bus, the Spartan swimmers and coach could have all easily fit into a minivan.
However, there was quality over quantity at the district swim meet.
“The swimmers exuded a quiet confidence and belief that they

belonged there,” Darin recalled. “Each had put in the hard work to get to this point and now it was time to swim. Rather than being overcome by the moment, the place, and the competition, they simply ignored the noise and swam fearlessly.”
WRESTLING

At the South Central Class 3A Regional Tournament, which was held at Spring Grove High School on Feb. 24 to 25, the Spartans were represented by three senior wrestlers.

Blake Weaver, Tyler Hurst, and Mason Musser all came up empty in their bids to earn medals at their respective weight classes.
Musser battled Treson Spahr of Lampeter-Strasburg in the first round of the 285-pound brackets with Spahr posting an 8-3 victory on his way to an eventual fifth-place finish.
“He had previously pinned him about a month ago in our dual meet,” Adam Bunting, the Spartans’ head coach, stated, alluding to both
wrestlers competing in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Though Musser did come back and shoot past Guner Hiller of Cedar Cliff and Ian Scully of Central York, pinning both opponents, he fell to the eventual fourth-place finisher, Avery Kuhns of Chambersburg, in the next round of the consolation brackets.
“He bounced back with two big pins - one against a very tough wrestler in Ian Scully, who had pinned Mason earlier this year,” Bunting commented. “He was battling Kuhns in a 0-0 match before getting reversed and pinned.”
“Mason had a solid senior season, winning 28 matches - 26 by fall and two by forfeit,” added Bunting. “So he pinned literally everyone that he defeated, which is a pretty remarkable feat.”
Hurst had a similar weekend, losing the opening match in the 215pound weight class and coming back with two wins in the consolations. Deion White of Boiling

Springs downed Hurst in the second period of the first round.
“Tyler got caught out of position and got pinned in his first match, leading 2-1 at the time,” Bunting explained.
The Spartan senior came back with a 7-1 victory over Elizabethtown’s Bradley Candy and narrowly won 3-2 over James Lopez of Red Lion before suffering a second-period pin at the hands of Elco’s Kyle Miller.
“He was battling in a close match with Miller from Elco,” Bunting said. “He was up 1-0

before being taken down and getting caught in a cradle in the second period. He lost by a fall.”
“Tyler finished his season with 31 wins to only 11 losses,” Bunting pointed out. “He was a league runner-up, finishing with 22 pins. Tyler improved dramatically over the past two years and plans to wrestle for Millersville University next year.”
Weaver wrestled at 189 and also suffered an opening-round setback. Hempfield junior J.J. Plaza eked out a 3-2 victory, sending Weaver to the consolation brackets.
“Blake’s match with Plaza was very similar to their L-L League
finale matchup - tied 1-1 late in the third period,” Bunting said. “Only this time, it was Plaza that was on the winning side of a late scramble.”
Weaver came back with a solid victory over Waynesboro’s Caden Shockey. He defeated Shockey by a 6-1 margin.
Eventual fifth-place finisher Anthony Bruscino of Cumberland Valley halted Weaver’s tournament with a 9-2 win in the second round of the contest.
“Blake battled until the end,” said Bunting. “His bracket was one of the toughest weight classes in the district. The top two seeds, the number six, number 10 and 12

kids were ranked in the state.”
Weaver, a three-sport athlete, finished the season with 29 wins and earned a league championship medal.
“He showed tremendous growth and was a great leader,” Bunting remarked.
“All three wrestlers battled and finished their seasons and careers with no regrets,” added the coach. “They were a force up top for us all year, and it was always awesome knowing we could count on big points at those three weight classes in dual meets. They will be greatly missed for both their wrestling and their leadership.”

Pastor Robert Gerhart from Bally will come to Fairmount on Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. to tell the story of Mennonite missionary Annie Clemmer Funk, using special chalks, lighting, and music. The 45minute program will take place in the Farm Crest Community Room Chapel, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the Fairmount campus.

Funk had served for six years as a teacher in India and was returning to her parents’ home near Bally on the Titanic. She had celebrated her 38th birthday on the Titanic just two days before dying after its fateful collision with an iceberg. The presentation will take the audience back to Funk’s Pennsylvania homestead and then to her missionary activity in India before concluding with her journey home in April 1912.
The program is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. Directions can be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.
In addition, a ham and cheese sandwich fundraiser, held jointly with the local Youth for Truth group, is now underway at Fairmount. The ham and cheese sandwiches may be ordered through Friday, March 31. Orders may be placed by calling 717-354-1800 or stopping by the front desk at Fairmount. The sandwiches will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just inside the front door of the Wheat Ridge building. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for the benefit of Fairmount residents in financial need.
