Each fall, the New Holland Farmer’s Day Association holds the town’s biggest annual event - the New Holland Fair. Each January, representatives of the association journey to Hershey to take part in the Pennsylvania Fairs & Showmen Convention. This year, 13 volunteers attended the convention, which ran from Jan. 22 through 25. Genevieve Adamow, 2024 New Holland Fair queen, attended to compete against 60 other young women in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Competition held throughout the convention.

New Holland Fair president Paulene Redding reported that the convention attracted 1,571 attendees. “It’s a big event,” noted Margo Korbel, who served as Adamow’s chaperone. “This was my third year, and I think it was the best (yet),” Korbel added. The 112th annual convention

included seminars on a variety of fair-related topics, an entertainment showcase, and roundtable discussions, in addition to the queen competition. Redding attended a seminar called “Junior Fair Boards: Why You Need Them,” and what she learned motivated her to think hard about passing the organizing of the event to future generations. “(The presenters) give you the motivation (to start a junior fair board),” noted Redding. “You have to have the nerve to get out there and do it, and I am ready to start.” According to Redding, seminar leaders stressed attracting high school students to the board, so the New Holland group will accept students ages 13 to 18. Redding planned to start by reaching out to previous fair queen applicants and students who already volunteer at the fair. A Feb. 26 informational meeting was held, and the first board meeting will be held on Thursday, March 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the fair building,

A vision to help

About a year ago, Alliance Network organized its first Concert Fundraiser. Dave Smucker, director of Alliance Network, said that the success of the 2024 event was the impetus for holding a second concert, but with a few changes. The initial concert attracted about 700 attendees and raised $24,000 for a mission to Kenya. “The Lord always gives the provision for the vision, so we just want to host a great gathering for this convergence,” said Smucker, who went on to detail a change in venue and the

addition of food offerings at this year’s event.

The 2025 Concert Fundraiser, hosted by Alliance Network and benefiting Preparing the Way Ministries, will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 15.

The concert will feature three live gospel acts. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the concert will begin at 6 p.m.

The Matt & Nimmie Band, which took part in the first event, will return for the follow-up.

The band has been playing music together for more than

It feels good to take part in a food drive or drop off a bag of groceries at your local food pantry, but how do you know if what you donated was really helpful? We asked Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager of the CrossNet Ministries, and Kerri Burns, market director at The Factory Ministries, to talk about donations that are especially appreciated and those that are a little harder to distribute.

located at the corner of Franklin Street and Roberts Avenue. Subsequent meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month. Redding hopes that junior board members will help with a variety of projects, including painting signs that direct fair goers to the exhibit tents located on Fulton Street.

In 2024, organizers added a petting zoo to the fair and directed visitors to see more animals at the Fulton Street exhibits. This year, Redding has secured a grant from Corteva to create an Ag Education Station near the farm show building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. “(The

Ag Education Station will be) a 10-by-30-foot tent with hands-on activities for younger students,” stated Redding, who noted the fair queen would spend time at the station and children would have opportunities to take part in agriculture-related activities such as separating cutouts of farm and zoo animals and fruits from vegetables. In addition, she hopes to have boxes where children can plant potatoes. The effort is part of a goal to involve more children in fair activities. In 2024, children

were given a chance to take part in the tug of war competition. “We had kids pull during intermission,” said Redding, who noted that two teams of 10 were chosen based on volunteers from the audience. Redding added that at the 2025 fair, children who volunteer to pull rope will receive free ride tickets and gift cards. “It gets kids involved,” she noted.

Korbel added that asking the children to take part was a win all around. “The kids were excited, the audience was excited, and the judges were thrilled,” she pointed out.

According to Korbel, Adamow was the perfect choice to be New Holland’s 2024 fair queen. “This girl is really involved and wants to do everything (she can to promote the fair),” said Korbel, who noted that she and Adamow helped children make jingle bell necklaces during Christmas on Main and that she was at the Terre Hill Christmas in the Park event two weekends in a row. “She did that on her own because she has so much initiative,” said Korbel, who added that Adamow will throw out the first pitch at the Saturday, Aug. 2, Stormers game and that she will

visit local libraries for Reading with Royalty events.

Korbel noted that she was impressed with all the queen contestants at the Hershey competition. “I liked the camaraderie of the girls,” she stated. “(I’m amazed at how) all those girls get along so well at that age and not be competitive with each other.” Adamow said that when she saw the application for the New Holland Fair queen competition, she knew it would be a good fit. Among the activities that attracted her were meeting people of all

ages, promoting farming, having fun dressing up, and being out and about at functions. “What’s not to love?” she asked. She found the fair convention and queen competition in Hershey exciting because of the “many people (who) dedicate their time to (Pennsylvania) fairs. Not only queens, but hundreds of other people from all across the state … came to Hershey to learn and improve on their town fair. It was such a neat thing to see,” she reported.

As with most queen candidates, Adamow experienced her share of jitters during the competition. “(The interview process) was definitely very nerve-racking,” she said, adding that the interview was the first time she met the judges

face-to-face. “When (I) entered the room, the judges asked (me) to point to where (our) fair was on a map of Pennsylvania (because) … none of them were from the state,” she recalled, adding that the judges followed up with questions about her knowledge of Pennsylvania agriculture. Summing up her experience, she noted, “Representing the New Holland Fair at the state convention was an opportunity that I am so glad I took and am very grateful for.” She added that it was a privilege to be able to attend such an event.

Back home, Adamow is looking forward to more opportunities that come with the title. “I am able to meet so many amazing

Preparing the Way, founded by Randy and Bonnie Martin of New Holland, includes a number of efforts concentrated in Thika, Kenya, Africa. In the 1990s, Randy began leading outreaches to Kenya, and in 2015, the Martins began working toward full-time ministry in Africa. Among the Preparing the Way ministries is the Africa Association of Bible Schools (AABS), of which Randy is the national director for Kenya. The Martins also work through local churches to help farmers to improve milk and crop production and to teach efficient construction methods to help increase worker pay. The ministry also organizes conferences to train leaders and pastors. The Martins travel with a portable stage and loudspeakers to do open air crusades. More information about Preparing the Way may be found at www.ptwministries.org.

“This is a convergence of stories,” noted Smucker, who pointed out that Alliance Network, Preparing the Way, the three musical acts, the food trucks, the venue, and the concert attendees will all be “connected in the broad network of relationships that are represented.”

Smucker is looking forward to presenting this year’s event with the changes. “We are building on the foundation from last year, and I think it will be an even better experience,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to being with the community again.” Smucker added that the Good Shepherd Chapel can seat about 1,200. “We are hoping for a better turnout and more support from the community,” he said. “Whatever is able to be funded out of that is beautiful.” Alliance Network works to bring together entrepreneurs, missions leaders, and organizations with the goal of collaborating for God’s greater purpose. Readers who would like to purchase tickets for the event may visit www.allianceus. org/community-concert-fundraiser. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free of charge. Agriculture makes its mark on Lancaster County

Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture conducts its Census of Agriculture, collecting information about the country’s farming activities. The most recent census, which examined the state of farming during 2022, revealed the following facts.

• Pennsylvania led the

U.S. in the percentage of its producers who were under the age of 35 - 12.7% - and Lancaster County was one of only two counties in the nation with more than 1,000 young producers.

(Lancaster County had 2,057.)

• Pennsylvania boasted 49,053 farms, and Lancaster County had 4,680

farms - 9.5% of the farms in the state.

• Four percent of Lancaster County’s farms operated organically.

• Eleven percent of the county’s farms sold directly to consumers.

• Ninety-eight percent of the county’s farms were family farms.

• The total market value of

products sold by Lancaster County farms in 2022 was $1.85 billion, accounting for 18% of agriculture sales in Pennsylvania.

• Lancaster County’s top crops in acres were corn for grain, 95,549; forage, 65,142; soybeans for beans, 51,695; corn for silage/ greenchop, 35,988; and wheat for grain, 24,101.

• The county’s harvest included 847,584 tons of corn for silage/greenchop; over 17 million bushels of corn for grain; over 2 million bushels of wheat for grain; 442,901 bushels of barley for grain; and 42,221 bushels of oats for grain.

• Lancaster County’s livestock totaled 13.7 million layers; close to 10.4 million broilers and other meat-type chickens; close to 7 million pullets (young hens); 322,153 hogs and pigs; 235,758 turkeys; and

182,218 cattle and calves.

• Approximately 82% of all agricultural products in Lancaster County were livestock, poultry, and their products; about 18% were crop related.

• Lancaster County ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania in many agriculture categories, including total market value of agricultural products sold and total livestock, poultry, and products sold. The county had the highest sales in the state in

grains, oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas; tobacco; and other crops and hay. Within the livestock category, it leads the state in sales of poultry and eggs; cattle and calves; milk from cows; hogs and pigs; and sheep, goats, wool, mohair, and milk. The county is seventh in the U.S. for poultry and eggs.

• There were approximately 56 commercial chickens (layers, pullets, and meat-type) per person in Lancaster County in 2022, according to estimated population information from the Census Bureau.

The strong link between agriculture and food security

According to government agencies, food security means all individuals, regardless of their physical or economic circumstances, have access to sufficient food to meet the dietary needs for a productive, healthy life. Food security is a more significant issue than people may recognize, even in fully developed countries. For example, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service indicates that slightly more than 10% of U.S. households were food insecure at some point during 2021. In fact, estimates suggest more than 800 million people around the globe go to bed hungry every night.

Food security and the agricultural industry are inextricably linked. Studies indicate that most of the people who go to bed hungry at night are smallholder farmers who depend on agriculture to make a living and feed themselves and their families. Supporting efforts

to strengthen the agricultural industry can help to combat food insecurity, as studies report that growth within that sector has been found to be at least twice as effective at reducing poverty as growth in other sectors. That trend may be due in part to the disproportionate percentage of people in need who live in rural rather than urban areas. Data from the 2019 American Community Survey indicates the poverty rate in rural areas in the U.S. was 15.4% in 2019 compared to 11.9% in urban areas.

To help improve food security, individuals in rural and urban communities can voice their support for efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector. They may also support this sector by purchasing locally grown food and shopping at farmers markets.

A thriving agricultural sector can ensure fewer people go to bed hungry each night and bolster the economies of rural communities.

The growth of green farming

Farmers have likely felt the need to increase production to meet the demand of a growing population, which may

require employing more efficient measures to ensure maximum output. Unfortunately, efficiency doesn’t always mesh with

sustainability, so commercial operations may have to make some modifications to find a balance between serving the public and pro-

tecting the planet.

Green farming utilizes different technology and practices in order to decrease detrimental impact on the environment. According to the farming resource NuFarming, agricultural operations have a significant impact on climate change. Simply adopting some new practices can lessen that impact.

Solar power

Plants are not the only thing on a farm that can benefit from the sun. Farmers can convert a portion or all of their power needs to solar. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are benefits when solar companies and farmers work together. Solar developers reduce installation costs and upfront risk by placing solar modules on previously tilled agricultural land. Vegetation under modules also can contribute to lower soil temperatures and increased solar performance. Agricultural land managers can reduce energy costs and diversify their revenue streams with solar. Plus, they can market products to sustainability-minded customers.

Solar is not the only renewable energy option. Farmers can incorporate

March 18

wind and hydroelectric power, as well.

Crop rotation

This farming technique has been used for thousands of years and involves growing different crops in different seasons on the same land. Farmers reduce the chances of pests and diseases becoming problems in the soil because frequent crop changes prevent invaders from gaining a foothold. Farmers may use fewer fertilizers and pesticides as a result.

Hydroponic and aquaponic strategies

Farmers can improve productivity while also reducing environmental impact with these two growing methods. NuEnergy has stated that hydroponic systems grow plants in mineral solutions or in materials like perlite or gravel. Aquaponics involves raising aquatic animals in addition to growing crops. The nutrient-rich water containing waste from fish and other marine life is reused as a medium for growing plants. Both methods remove the need for soil.

Drip irrigation

Drip irrigation methods deliver water to the roots of plants through a series of pipes or tubes. Because water is not being sprayed

into the air through sprinklers and other methods, less is lost to evaporation, and less water overall may be needed to provide for crops.

Plasticulture

Plastic seems like it may not have a purpose on farms, but recycled plastic, which is used in plastic mulch, can help produce plentiful crops with less water. Plastic mulches raise soil temperatures and insulate against evaporation so plants can grow faster and mature sooner. Invasive weeds also may be less likely to take root in plastic mulch or when crops are grown on black plastic.

Natural pesticides

To reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, farmers can introduce plants that pests tend not to like. For example, interspersing crops with plants that are natural bug repellants, such as basil, lavender, and lemongrass, may keep insects at bay. Alliums, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and other flowers planted nearby also may deter bugs.

Green farming can have a variety of environmentally friendly benefits, making it something more agricultural operations may want to consider adopting.

people with such interesting jobs, which has been great for making connections,” she said. “The people who make up our town are some of the most hardworking and generous people, and I am so grateful to have met so many of them.” Looking ahead, Adamow will visit local fairs and meet other fair queens over the summer. At the convention, she enjoyed meeting other queens whose agriculture experiences have been similar to her own. She encouraged other young women in the area to take part in the next New Holland Fair queen competition. “If you’re thinking about applying … this is your sign to do it,” she stated. “You won’t regret it!”

CrossNet Ministries

CrossNet’s food pantry serves close to 200 local families monthly, and Burns said that more than 35 families per week shop at The Factory Market. Marburger stated that all in-date items are welcome, but that donations that fall into the personal care items category are often the most appreciated. Marburger listed shampoo, conditioner, body wash, dish detergent, laundry detergent, hand soap, paper towels, and facial tissues among those items that are not donated as often. Over at The Factory, Burns said that she would add plastic silverware and toilet paper to the list, along with canned meats, water, and laundry detergent.

Both pantries like to see certain non-food items, such as can openers and slow cookers, come through the door. “You can never go wrong donating a can opener or a Crock-Pot,” shared Burns. “Those are game changers (for Factory participants).”

Marburger agreed. “I would also add that gently used kitchen utensils

and/or cookware are welcome,” she stated. “These items are displayed on a ‘free’ shelf and are appreciated by local families when they are available.”

“Many people are surprised to know that feminine hygiene products and other personal care items are not covered by SNAP benefits,” Burns said. “For this reason, people are excited to see them in the pantry.” Marburger noted that feminine hygiene products and deodorant are always needed and that CrossNet has seen a special need for baby items such as in-date formula, food, and cereal. Donations of diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6 and pullups are welcome, as are baby wipes.

At CrossNet, Marburger has not seen pantry needs change drastically from season to season, but she said that needs for items for other programs do. “(In the spring), we are prepping for the summer lunch (program), so cookies or (crisped rice) treats (will be needed),” Marburger said, adding that in the summer of 2024, nearly 13,000 lunches were served. Cereal cups and individual macaroni and cheese cups are helpful for the Buddy Bag and Student Pantry programs. Foods that Marburger feels are needed all year include baking items such as sugar and oil.

of potential whether you’re looking for a future residence or an investment opportunity!

Open Houses: Sat. March 29, 10am-12pm & Mon. March 31, 4:30pm-6pm

“I agree with Amy,” stated Burns. “Our list doesn’t change too much from season to season, but in the winter, it’s nice to have coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hand warmers, and ChapStick.” Burns stated that in the summer, needs are more related to children being home from school, so it is helpful to receive canned pastas, soup, and sunblock.

When it comes to soups, which are a staple, the managers of both pantries have seen a preference among participants. “Many of our families prefer chunkier or heartier soups over condensed versions, and (while) we always need basics like cream of chicken or condensed chicken noodle, we often have a nice supply of those items,” said Marburger. More variety in cracker and cereal donations - not just saltine crackers and plain Cheerios - would be welcome as well. Surprisingly, condiments are not common donations. “We always need ketchup, but we rarely have items like mayonnaise available,” she said. Burns added mustard, pickles, and salad dressing to Marburger’s list.

Extra-large containers of food or detergent are not always easy to distribute, according to Burns. “When someone donates something extra large, only one lucky person gets to take home that item,” she pointed out. “However, when multiple smaller items are donated, more people are able to be served.” She added that shoppers who are living in their vehicles have limited space and that some recipients may not be able to handle large items easily.

Marburger admitted that it is sometimes difficult to find a fit for large donations. While large bottles of liquid detergent work for big families, extra-large cans of food linger on the shelf. “We struggle to use the commercial-size cans of vegetables,” said Marburger.

During the growing season, the CrossNet pantry partners with a farm and an orchard - receiving about 500 pounds of produce weekly. However, the pantry also appreciates donations of home-grown produce, and Marburger invites those interested in donating food from their gardens to call CrossNet at 717-355-2454 first.

Burns noted that The Factory Market handles fresh produce a little differently. “We receive about 500 pounds of produce a month from a partner agency, and we rely on our neighbors to drop off things from their gardens,” she said. “Shoppers get excited when we have fresh produce in the pantry.”

Burns had one last recommendation for donors. “I would love to add that while name-brand products are often great, they’re not always essential.” She noted that often a larger quantity of a store brand item can be donated for the same amount of money.

Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory and its mission may visit https://thefactory ministries.com or call 717-6879594. More information about CrossNet may be found at https:// elancocross.org.
