An Artist’s View Of Lancaster
Denlinger’s Seasonal Murals

Inearly 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.
Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils.
Honest Talk For Women
Group Meets Weekly At City Gate, Ephrata

Amanda Sensenig was aware that a men’s group had been meeting at City Gate, 100 E. Main St., Ephrata, for about two years. She told her father that she wished there was a similar group for women. “When I was going through my teen years, I had struggles,” recalled Sensenig. “No one would give me the answers I wanted.”

He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.
The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind
Milton E. BY ANN MEAD ASHTo encourage students in the ELANCO School District to develop healthy smiles, certified school nurse Joy Hoover employs a threepronged approach that includes examinations, education, and visits from Smile Program … The Mobile Dentists.

“The Smile Program goes into each of our elementary and secondary schools,” noted Hoover. The mobile team performs cleanings and X-rays, and members can apply fluoride and sealants to a student’s

teeth. “There’s a pediatric dentist on the team, and sometimes they do smaller fillings and restorations,” said Hoover. The mobile care team is scheduled a year in advance, and once a student is seen by the team, a sixmonth reminder is sent to the student to make sure care can continue. The program also collects insurance information and bills accordingly.
Students who need extensive dental work are referred to a local dentist. Hoover noted that if insurance is not available, students who qualify may benefit from a family assistance fund administered by district social workers. Parents can sign a child up to participate in a mobile dental visit at www.mobiledentist.com.
Students in kindergarten or first, third, and seventh grades, where dental checks are required, will be seen by the school dentist, a role that is filled by Garden Spot Dental. “These are the (grades) where the state says the majority of children have the biggest changes going in in their mouths,” said Hoover. The school dentist performs a visual examination, and families are encouraged to follow up with their own dentist based on the findings.
Hoover said that education about dental health topics is focused on children in kindergarten through third grade. Before the advent of

Sportsmen’s Banquet
COVID-19 restrictions, local dentists would visit schools to give presentations about home care techniques. “Schools have opened up again (to allowing visitors),” Hoover said. “We are looking forward to starting that (dental visit) program up again.”

Hoover noted that working with Smile Program has gone smoothly and that the group may meet the dental needs of up to 50 students in a two- or three-day period, setting up in conference rooms or other open spaces to provide care.
Raising parental awareness of the dental programs offered by the district means more students may take part and benefit from healthier smiles. Readers who would like to learn more about the ELANCO School District may visit www.elanco.org.
To Feature Deer Hunter
The Ephrata Area Churches will hold their annual sportsmen’s banquet on Friday, March 10, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Attendees may browse various displays when the doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded.

The speaker will be Christian Berg, editor of Petersen’s Bowhunting Magazine and co-host of The Bowhunting Podcast. In his presentation, “Hunting Smart for Whitetail Success,” Berg will offer insights on what it takes to get within shooting distance of wary, old whitetails. He will share the keys to consistent success and how to avoid costly mistakes.
Whitetail hunter Berg has hunted across North America, amassing a trophy collection that includes seven

bucks over 150 inches and two over 180 inches. Berg began his hunting career in the Keystone State and currently resides in Schuylkill County with his wife, two sons and Labrador retriever. and teens in similar circumstances, Sensenig contacted Floyd Shirk, who created Main Point Men of Faith, which Sensenig had heard about.
Unbeknownst to Sensenig, Shirk had been praying about the possibility of starting a group for women. After talking to Shirk, it was decided that Sensenig would form a group, and in late September 2022, Main Point for Women was born.

The meetings, which include live and videotaped speakers and Bible studies, are held each Tuesday, beginning with a meal, which lasts from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Sensenig then speaks and devotions are held. At 7 p.m., a speaker takes to the podium for an hour to give a testimony. Sometimes a video message is presented in lieu of a speaker.

The gatherings have attract-

ed up to 10 women per session.

“It’s still small, but we are working on growing,” said Sensenig, who added that the intergenerational interaction at the meeting is a plus. “There’s something about having all ages, with the older ones able to help the younger ones,” she said. “I wish there was something like this when I was younger,” she commented.
Most important to Sensenig is that Main Point honestly addresses issues women face.
Pointing to her own past experience, Sensenig said, “(When I was a teenager), I became angry with people who tried to help. The answers were always roundabout. I wanted straight, honest answers.”

thepieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew
5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied

the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.
Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

Being A Good Neighbor
BY FRANCINE FULT ONIn lieu of its regularly scheduled meeting at Conestoga Mennonite Church, members of the Neighbors group spent the morning volunteering at Anchored Ministries in Elverson on Feb. 7.
While at Anchored Ministries, which offers free clothing to people in need, about a half dozen members of the ladies’ Christian fellowship group spent time sorting through clothing donations and placing the items in the appropriate areas, which were labeled for men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.

Anchored Ministries owns and operates two mobile clothing closets housed inside trailers, which have been converted to hold clothing on racks for newborns through adults. The mobile clothing closet stops at various locations, including CrossNet Ministries in New Holland and the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
On hand to guide the volunteers was Melissa Werner, director of programs and events for Anchored Ministries. “We throw out anything that has holes or stains that won’t come out,” she said. “We want people to
feel loved and appreciated when they come into the trailers and take stuff. We don’t want to give them (items that should be thrown out).”
According to Tina Essick, program chair for Neighbors, the women take part in an annual field trip to help out a community service organization. Volunteers also worked at Anchored Ministries last year. “It’s very organized. You put clothing on the right shelf for when they need to restock their trailers,” Essick noted.
Werner said that it is very helpful when groups of volunteers or individuals agree to sort clothing. “Each week we are getting more and more donations,” she shared. “It would be great to have more groups work as sorters. When (people) have an interest in sorting, they don’t have to commit to a set time. If you can stay for an hour or three (hours), every bit helps.”
For more information about Anchored Ministries, including volunteer opportunities, visit www.facebook.com/Anchored MinistriesPA or www.anchored ministries.org.
As an alternative to volunteering on Feb. 7, members of the Neigh-

bors group had the option to take part in Moms’ Day Out. “Mothers (were offered) child care at the church, but were able to leave and go shopping,” Essick explained.
The Neighbors group meets from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month at the church. Each Neighbors meeting includes refreshments, a time of prayer and a guest speaker. While the women are at the meeting, child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children.
All Neighbors programs and child care are offered free of charge, but

GSV Posts Birdhouse Auction, Genealogy Program

Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will present its Secret Garden Birdhouse Display and Online Auction through Tuesday, Feb. 28. This event features handcrafted birdhouses and tables donated by the GSV Wood Shop and spring bird-themed items donated by quilters, crafters and the GSV Art Guild. Bidders can peruse the nearly 100 items in GSV’s Village Square, where the display stretches from the Harvest Table to the Artisans Corner.
The link to the online auction is available at www.gsc.gl/birdhouse. The event will close online on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m., and proceeds will benefit the Benevolent Care Fund. Since first opening 15 years ago, this annual effort has raised more than $50,000 to benefit the Benevolent Care Fund, supporting GSV residents who have exhausted their financial resources.

Additionally, GSV will partner with Mennonite Life to present a Genealogy Session on Monday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. in the chapel. During the session, Julia Wiker, archivist and librarian at Mennonite Life, will provide an introduction to genealogy research, including basic tips and ways to start one’s own genealogy search. Mennonite Life’s archive and library provides resources for people who have Mennonite as well as non-Mennonite family connections to Lancaster County. Wiker noted that the materials include family Bibles from as far back as the 16th century.

Women’s Garden Club Will Meet

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. She will also share information on purchasing plants such as trillium and blood root.
Guests are welcome to attend for a nominal donation.

Spartans Fall Short Against Warwick, Solanco
BY ARA GIRGORIANA strong second stanza helped the Spartans keep pace at Solanco in Tuesday’s L-L League girls’ basketball game. Trailing by only nine
points at the half, the visitors saw Solanco go on a 179 run en route to a 59-32 victory. Garden Spot fell to 318 (2-9 league).
Nikki Zeiset and Morgan Pavelik matched one another in offensive production, each scoring seven points and making a three-pointer while doing so.

Meredith Horst scored six for the Spartans.
Jenna Ehlers, with 22 points for Solanco, was the offensive force the Spartans weren’t able to stop.
Warwick topped the Spartans 56-20 in New Holland on Friday, February 3 as Bella Smithson scored 16 for the Warriors.
Zeiset put up a pair of treys and led the Spartans in scoring with 11. A.J. McClain scored one basket and went 2-for-2 at the

Boots For The Whole Family
free throw line, giving Garden Spot four more points.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Coming off a tough 47-40 loss at Warwick the previous Friday, the Garden Spot boys’ basketball team found its groove on Tuesday, February 7, pouring in 12 three-point baskets in a defeat of Solanco.
The loss at Warwick knocked the Spartans’ record to 5-15 on the year. The Warriors outscored the Spartans by only one point in the second half of this LancasterLebanon League contest and managed to hang on despite Spartan junior Lance Binkley pouring in a game-high 23 points.

Binkley, who would go on to connect on four threepointers in the Solanco game, converted seven treys at Warwick. Jace Conrad and Gabriel Smeltz scored nine and eight points, respectively, each swooshing in a three-point basket also.
The Spartans defeated Solanco 58-46, improving to
3-8 in league play. All 12 of Binkley’s points came off treys. Conrad had a pair of treys as he also scored a dozen. Smeltz led the way in scoring with 14 points, also hitting two triples. Michael Heisley finished with nine points, all on three-pointers. Austin Hurst (5 pts) also nailed a three-pointer.
AIR RIFLE

On Groundhog day, the Garden Spot rifle team had a clear view of its targets. Matthew Sauder, Leksi Bender, Magdalene Martin, Ryan Lambert, and Trevor Jones all shot 99’s to pace the Spartans over Wilson 495-480 at New Holland.
Catherine Wolf had a 97 for the Bulldogs.
Garden Spot carried the momentum into the following week and compiled a score of 490 on Tuesday, February 7, at Conestoga Valley. The Buckskins edged the Spartans by one point with Sierra Land scoring 100 for CV.
Sauder scored a 99 in this

match as well. Bender, Martin and Jones each finished at 98 while Jack Werner shot a 97.
With a three-way tie for first place in the league standings, the Spartans are 9-5, only one match behind the top trio - Ephrata, Manheim Central and Manheim Township.
BOWLING
The Spartans wrapped up the 2022-23 bowling season with a 5-2 loss to Manheim Central at Cain’s Lanes on February 3. Garden Spot finished 46-38.
Central came up short in its quest for a Section Three crown. That honor went to Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers finished at 69-15 to Central’s 61-23 league record.
