Manyyears ago, when the Garden Spot boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams were still at club status, a booster organization made up of players’ parents began holding an annual pancake breakfast each February. The fundraiser took a hiatus in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, but now the event has returned.

Dubbed the Sweetheart Pancake Breakfast because of its proximity on the calendar to Valentine’s Day, the 2023 all-you-can-eat buffet will be held in the Garden Spot High School cafeteria, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 8 to 11 a.m. A per-person price will include unlimited pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee, and treats from the hot chocolate bar.

According to organizer Christine Scarle, the venue will be decorated for Valentine’s Day. “The kids will

“We are empowering the church through many different avenues,” said Randy Martin, who founded Preparing the Way Ministries with his wife, Bonnie. The New Holland pair, missionaries of Petra Church, oversee a number of efforts under the ministry’s umbrella, concentrated in Thika, Kenya, Africa.

“In Africa, we do many things,” said Randy, who first became interested in missions in Kenya when a man from that country visited him in 1993. The man told the couple about a vision he had of a church in Africa.

For a few years now, the Racial Literacy Team of Garden Spot Village (GSV) has been meeting to discuss issues of racial equity and justice. Now, members of that group, in cooperation with the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) and GSV’s Lighter Side Players, have developed a program that incorporates Welsh Mountain history in a look back at prevailing attitudes toward race in the past and now.

Preparing The Way frompg

In 1994, he told the Martins the vision had come true. Randy visited Kenya and fell in love with the country and its people. He began leading outreaches to Kenya, traveling there about 30 times, sometimes with Bonnie. In 2015, Randy had a vision that involved dropping the nail bag he wore in his construction business. Bonnie pointed out to him that in the vision, the nail bag dropped slowly to the ground, so Randy and Bonnie took their time, moving to Kenya and full-time ministry in 2018.

“We went from a momand-pop operation to a fullfledged ministry,” said Randy, who noted the 501(c)(3) has a board and staff in New Holland and five leaders overseeing aspects of the ministry in

Thika. Among those ministries is the Africa Association of Bible Schools (AABS), of which Randy is the national director for Kenya. “We provide curriculum to empower leaders, and they run the school,” said Randy, who explained that through membership schools, certificates are awarded to students who meet the criteria.

A large part of the Martins’ ministry involves community empowerment. Working through local churches, the ministry is helping farmers to improve milk and crop production and teaching efficient construction methods to help increase worker pay. “Our desire is to empower the community to give them sustainable incomes,” said Randy, who added that no-interest

loans allow for the purchase of water pumps and beehives. Repayment of the loans is used to purchase similar items for others.

Organizing conferences to train leaders and pastors is another branch of the organization. In May of 2022, a conference held in Wote, Kenya, featured 12 U.S. leaders and attracted more than 300 Kenyans. More than 600 Kenyans are expected for a September conference, and in May, 400 Kenyan youths will interact with youths and leaders from the U.S. in teaching sessions and sporting events.

The Martins also travel with a portable stage and loudspeakers to do open air crusades. “We were the first to preach the Gospel of Jesus publicly in the Shamoni region,” said Randy, who noted that close to 150 people accepted Jesus in the five-day effort. Randy dreams of having a truck equipped with a stage for this purpose. He would also like to see a church built in the area, noting that a 40-by-70-foot church can be built with the help of a U.S. team in about a week. Randy and Bonnie visit local churches in Kenya for revival services, and in the U.S., they help organize outreach teams to visit Kenya.

Now, the Martins are hoping to build a base in Kenya to enhance the construction and agriculture training they are doing there. More information about Preparing the Way may be found at www.ptwministries.org.

Past breakfasts have raised about $3,000 each for the program, which is divided into a youth segment for second-graders through middle-schoolers and a segment for high school teams.

“We hope to raise that much this time, and even more would be great,” said Scarle, who noted that funds from the event benefit both youth and high school players. At the youth level, Scarle said funds cover referee fees, field maintenance, insurance, and equipment.

“We don’t ask (youth players) to purchase their own equipment,” she explained. “They are trying to get familiar with the sport, so we have equipment for them to borrow.” At the high school level, funds help to cover team meals and bonding events. Themed shirts are also purchased for players. “Last year, the girls’ theme was ‘Unity,’” reported Scarle.

Spartans Post 38-35 OT Win Over Elizabethtown

The Garden Spot girls’ basketball team rebounded from a loss at Ephrata the previous week by beating Elizabethtown in overtime by a 38-35 score on Tuesday, January 24.

It was Garden Spot’s second win of the season in L-L League play as the Spartans improved to 3-15 (2-6 league).

The buzzer sounded to mark the end of regulation of this contest at Garden Spot. The teams were tied at 30-30. The Spartans, who had relinquished a 27-21 lead in the fourth quarter, made the key shots in the extra period.

The Spartans’ Morgan Pavelik and E-town’s Jadyn Lloyd tied for the top scoring honors with 12 points each.

A.J. McClain poured in 10.

Spot was coming off a 6025 loss at Ephrata the previous Friday. In a game played at Ephrata Middle School, the Mountaineers’ defense limited the Spartans to 13 points through the first three quarters.

Nikki Zeiset led the Spartans with 13 points, converting on a pair of three-point baskets.

Jasmine Griffin scored 26 points for the Moun-

taineers, who improved to 12-4 (6-1 league).

BOWLING

Garden Spot’s bowling team improved to 37-26, with a Section Three win over Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday, January 24 at Dutch Lanes.

Gavin Courtney rolled a 527 on the day. As a team, the Spartans tallied 2382 pins to the Blazers’ 1891.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Garden Spot was unable to hold off Ephrata’s relentless comeback attempts on Friday night, January 20, in a Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ basketball game in New Holland. The Spartans came up short in a 44-40 final.

The Mountaineers, who improved to 9-6 (3-4 league) climbed out of a 10-3 hole and even managed to overtake the Spartans at halftime 16-13. And it was only a one-point game heading into the fourth quarter - Ephrata up 30-29.

Part of the reason the Mountaineers’ offense caught a spark was Cooper Truskey, hitting five three-point baskets. He scored all 15 of his points from three-point range.

Jace Conrad led Spot with 14 points, going a perfect 4for-4 at the free throw line.

Dylan Nolt and Bruce Weaver

each finished with six points.

The Spartans fell to 5-11 (2-6 league) following a 45-35 loss at Elizabethtown on Tuesday, January 24.

After spotting Spot a 22-13 halftime lead, the Bears, led by Braden Cummings (17 pts), mauled their way back, outscoring the Spartans 32-13 in the second half.

Conrad finished with a team-high 12. Zach Uplinger and Owen Usner scored six and five points, respectively.

WRESTLING

At the Denver Duals on Saturday, January 21, the Garden Spot wrestling team topped Annville-Cleona in a consolation match but fell to Cocalico in a close 36-30 final.

The Spartans battled to the very last match against Cocalico with the Eagles’ Timothy Porter escaping with a 5-3 decision over Tomo Allen in the 133-pound bout.

There were a few other close results in the match, including Josiah Smucker coming up just short in a 6-2 decision at the 139-pound weight class.

Sean Kelch came through with the Spartans’ first points of the match, taking down Gabriel Lesher in a secondperiod pin. That came in the 160-pound battle.

At 172, Albert Vega notched yet another pin, drawing the Spartans even closer at 15-12.

Blake Weaver suffered a tough 5-3 loss at 189. But Garden Spot ran off 18 straight points thanks to pins b Tyler Hurst (215) Mason Musser (285) and a forfeit by the Eagles at 107.

Allen’s effort at 133 was commendable, given that a forfeit at 121 and an injury default at 127 helped Cocalico collect 12 points and retake the lead 33-30.

In the Annville-Cleona match, Smucker had a pin at 139 and Kelch decisioned Ayden Heilman 10-5 at 152.

The Spartans were aided by forfeits at 189 and 215 while Musser came through with a pin at 285. Two of the final three weight classes went to the Spartans with uncontested team points thanks to A-C forfeits. Garden Spot won 39-27.

AIR RIFLE

In a battle between two of the top air rifle teams in the L-L League, Garden Spot lost by one point to Manheim

Township on the road, Thursday, January 19. The Blue Streaks were led by Alyssa Dunn and Alex Fehrrenbacher - both of whom shot 100’s. Jack Werner hit the century mark for Garden Spot while a quartet of marksmen finished

with 99’s. Leksi Bender, Matthew Sauder, Magadalene Martin and Trevor Jones all tied for the second-best score on the team. Garden Spot fell to 5-3 on the year.

The Spartans shot back with a victory over Ephrata on

Tuesday, January 24. This time it was a quartet of shooters reaching the 100-point mark and leading Garden Spot to a 498-494 win.

Bender, Sauder, Werner and Jones each hit 100 on the day while Martin shot a 98.

Career Fairs Of The Future

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks

like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”

Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.

Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having inperson career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a

shorter amount of time.”

JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA

CareerLink agency for more information.

JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/ja inspirefair.

JA Inspire provides a virtual career fair opportunity for students as well as for adults seeking employment.

NHAHS representative Don Horning referred to the program as “a look in the mirror.” “(The program will include) a little self-examination,” said Horning. He shared that at one time, New Holland had an “unwritten” prohibition against people of color owning property in town. “Was that part of the racial inequity that was happening everywhere in the U.S.?” asked Horning, who noted that discussing whether those attitudes affect today’s perspectives

will be part of the presentation.

The first program, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 13, at the GSV chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m., will be called “Personalities and Perspectives,” and it will feature letters and storytelling. Horning will moderate, and Ruthann Ware and Dick Johnson will serve as narrators. “While much of the program will focus on the changing culture of the Welsh Mountains from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, mem-

bers of the Lighter Side Players of GSV will portray the personalities of Abe Buzzard, Isaac Boots and Nancy Sandoe, three prominent residents of the mountain from earlier in the century,” said Paul Kelley, a member of the Racial Literacy Team.

Fran Rapp, head of the Lighter Side Players, will portray Buzzard, an outlaw who was active in the area in the late 1800s. Tony der Kinderen will play Boots, also known as Pegleg, a leader of the Welsh Mountain community. Born in 1889, Boots helped drive efforts to build a medical center on the mountain because it was too far to travel to Ephrata. Lou Ann Miller will play Sandoe, a black woman born on the mountain in 1891 to a Presbyterian minister and his wife. Her father served on the mountain, so Sandoe spent her childhood ministering to the mountain folk. As an adult, she was involved in the founding of the Welsh Mountain clinic.

On Monday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m., well-known local storyteller Ken Sensenig will give a presentation on the religious history and mission activities in the Welsh Mountains. “Sensenig will present stories and historical research,” said Chet Yoder, GSV director of pastoral services. “He will touch on the Welsh Mountain Home as part of that,” added Yoder.

Yoder said the public is welcome to attend, and Racial Literacy Team member Sara Jane Munshower added that the primary goal is to examine these issues locally. “(We want to look at) how (this history) impacts what we do going forward as a community,” she said.

In the case of inclement weather, readers who wish to hear and see the presentation may livestream the event at www.gardenspotvillage.org/live.

1719 Museum Slates Tour Guide Training

The 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, is looking for volunteers to serve as tour guides for its historic property. The museum will host training sessions every Saturday beginning on Feb. 11 and concluding on March 18, with the exception of Saturday, March 4. The sessions will be held at 9 a.m. at the 1719 Museum as well as Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.

“We like to share stories about the area’s history,” said Lois Miklas, administrator of the 1719 Museum. “We want to get people to think about what it must have been like for the people who first settled here and connect it to their own lives.”

There are only a few requirements to attend the classes to become a guide: Tour guides must be at least 18 years old and have the ability to educate small groups of people as they tour the property. Miklas noted that although the location has certain areas that can be physically challenging to navigate, such as narrow spaces and stairs, the museum will accommodate anyone who wishes to become a guide.

“The museum is great for people who like history; they’ll get a good dose of history from our local community,” said Miklas. The site is

open from April until October, and the museum is looking for guides who can commit to providing tours at least one day or one halfday each month.

The 1719 Museum uses trained tour guides to take visitors through its property, which contains the original Hans Herr House, built by Mennonite settlers in 1719. It is the oldest site of Colonial settlement in Lancaster County and was inhabited by Mennonite settlers who traveled from Europe to Philadelphia before finally landing in Lancaster in 1710.

Visitors touring the property will also have an opportunity to see a replica of an indigenous longhouse that would have existed around the year 1650. The longhouse offers guests a view of how Native Americans lived along the Susquehanna before and during Colonial times.

The 1719 Museum also hosts its Maize and Snitz Festival in October each year. The festival celebrates various traditions and customs exhibited by both early American settlers and local indigenous tribes.

“It’s important for people to have a sense of what their community’s history is, so that they can see how they

Submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as photography, sculpture, painting or collage, and both professional and amateur artists of any age are encouraged to participate. All artwork is free to submit, and artists may submit any number of pieces. Mulberry Art Studios will accept five to eight pieces of artwork per adult and three pieces per child.

The only criterion for submissions is that they depict an animal that would reasonably be kept as a pet, meaning that pieces that portray fictional and undomesticated animals will not be accepted. “It doesn’t have to be your pet specifically, but it has to be reasonable,” said Stephanie Kulfan, gallery curator at Mulberry Art Studios. “It’s supposed to be a celebration of our love of animals and their significance in our lives.”

Milo, the late mascot of Mulberry Art Studios, depicted in a charcoal drawing by Scott Huggins

would benefit an animal rescue in the area. Each year, Mulberry Art Studios supports the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue by donating a portion of all art sales from the exhibit. On opening night, members of the Sebastian Foundation will have a table at the studio to accept donations, and several vendors will be present to sell pet-related items.

Last year, 162 pieces were accepted from over 100 artists from across the county. Many art teachers even incorporated the show into their curriculum, helping students to create artwork of their beloved pets to submit for the show.

Mulberry Art Studios created “We Love Our Pets” five years ago, after gallery owner April Koppenhaver experienced two significant losses in her life. Koppenhaver’s husband, Charles Gaul, and her beagle mix, Milo, both passed away within a month of each other, and Koppenhaver and Kulfan wanted to create a way to honor them. They decided to start an annual community art show that would be centered around pets and that

Although the show began prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kulfan believes that the struggles of the pandemic made many people realize how much they appreciated their animals. “Everyone was spending more time at home and realized how much having animal companions helped us,” said Kulfan. “People realized the comfort that animals give you.”

To submit a piece of artwork for the show, email Kulfan at Stephanie.Mulberry Art@gmail.com.
