Hamming It Up For Winter Field Day By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The mission of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans is to provide handmade quilts and afghans to several area hospice centers where they are distributed to veterans. Currently, creations are delivered to the Coatesville and Lebanon VA hospitals, AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice & Community Care. The Stitchers is a committee of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Members of the Stitchers volunteer their time, and necessary supplies have generally been donated by the volunteers for the more than 125 blankets that have been given to veterans so far. Twice a year, amateur radio operators - colloquially known as ham radio operators - set up their equipment out of doors and attempt to contact as many people around the globe as possible. “We’re practicing for emergencies,” explained Red Rose Repeater Association (RRRA) president Daniel Boone of Willow Street. “Disasters don’t know the seasons of the year.” Field days are 24-hour events in order to include amateur radio enthusiasts in all time zones, as well as to give individuals experience broadcasting during the day and night. The position of the sun impacts the distance radio waves travel, Boone said. “We have access to solar radiation See Winter Field Day pg 7

Amber Pavalko of Bowmansville wanted to go for bicycle rides with her 6-year-old daughter, Addie. What should be a simple desire is complicated by the fact that Amber has Chiari malformation, a neurological condition in which the brain extends into the spinal column. Chiari is associated with a variety of other physical problems including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inheritable connective tissue disorder, and syringomyelia, which occurs when a syrinx, a cyst caused by a buildup of fluid, forms in the spinal cord. Amber has been dealing with the issues related to Chiari since the birth of her daughter in July 2013. In the time since, she has been undergoing both physical and occupational therapy, but her health issues have made it difficult for her to make progress in either area. In the last year, Amber has
