Main St. Loewen was both a proponent of and an advocate for New Holland’s downtown business district. “Oh my, he touched a lot of lives,” said Dissinger. “If you were sick, he’d try to visit you. He had a lot of teenagers working for him over the years. A lot of them he took under his wing and tried to instill values in them. He also had a heart of gold for senior citizens. He would help people out financially.” “When you would first meet

him, he’d always make you feel comfortable,” Dissinger added. “He’d make a joke about himself. He’d try to break the ice. He would try to encourage you. I swear he had a gift for that. He was very kind to you. He would always try to make you feel welcome in his presence. He was always thinking. He’d ask you questions that were off the wall or deep.” Loewen had been accepted to Penn State University when he was involved in a car accident in 1976. His mother, Louise, was killed, and a broken neck left Loewen a quadriplegic. Loewen never went to college

very town has a homer, a person everybody knows. Every town has an individual who exemplifies the locale’s values, makes the area a better place to live and impacts every life he or she touches. In New Holland, Steve Loewen was that guy. “He was called Mr. New Holland by a lot of people,” said Mitch Dissinger, Loewen’s close friend for 40 years. “He loved New Holland very much. That was one of the common denominators that he and I had. He was a big cheerleader for New Holland in all aspects. He was always big on how can we improve the town or save some of the buildings in town. He had his hands in a lot of projects. People would contact him for advice.” Loewen, Mr. New Holland, passed away on Nov. 3, 2025, at the age of 67. Loewen was a 1976 graduate of Garden Spot High School and a member of St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland. Dissinger noted Loewen had been dealing with health issues. “He would call my wife and I almost every day and give us updates,” Dissinger said. “At the last (New Holland Area Historical Society) meeting, Steve said, ‘I want to talk. I just want to thank everyone for coming. I’m not feeling well. Take it away, Mitch.’” “He went home and went to the hospital,” continued Dissinger. “Then we got a call that he passed. We kind of knew it was coming, but it was a shock . Another

Don’t Snooze on a Good Night’s Sleep The importance of sleep to a human’s overall health and well-being can’t be overstated. Both a societal problem and an individual problem - both a cause and an effect - sleep disorders are fairly common. But the good news is that at its most basic level, quality of sleep can be improved through relatively minor adjustments and common-sense measures. “ We have absolutely made progress in this area,” said Masood Ahmad, a physician who is certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. “We understand sleep apnea better. We’re diagnosing more cases, and we’re managing them better. Now people understand it better. Everyone knows sleep is important.” Ahmad practices sleep medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sleep Lab at 1575 Highlands Drive, Lititz. The sleep lab evaluates, assesses, diagnoses and prov ides p ers onaliz e d treatments for individuals experiencing a wide range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, sleeptalking, insomnia and restless legs syndrome. “We send patients to the sleep lab to diagnosis their sleep disorders,” said Ahmad. “We have to do the sleep studies to see how they sleep. Most of the times it’s nighttime studies for sleep apnea, but sometimes we do studies to see how sleepy they are during the day. We want to

We look for body movements. We have to see what state the apnea is in. We coordinate all of those things, and then from the correlation we make a diagnosis.” With assistance from sleep technicians, typically n i g h t t i m e s t u d i e s a re performed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the UPMC Sleep Lab. Ahmad refers patients to the sleep lab, examines the results of the studies and also helps treat patients who have been referred by other physicians. “If someone comes to me and tells me, ‘I can’t sleep,’ I have to pinpoint the problem,” said Ahmad. “I’ll ask them, ‘What’s your history? What’s your specific problem? When you sleep, what happens?’ Some patients have multiple problems.” “Some people can’t sleep because of behavior problems, like T V and cellphones,” continued Ahmad. “I’ll recommend managing stress better and not watching blue light one hour before bedtime. I’ll tell them to exercise regularly, no caffeine before bed, no snacks before bed and try not to nap during the daytime. These are common recommendations.”

Blue Ridge Communications has announced the kickoff of its 13th annual Touch a Heart campaign, an initiative designed to inspire individuals to create handmade valentines for distribution to nursing home residents, veterans, soldiers and those in need. Pa r t i c i p a n t s o f a l l a g e s a re e n co u ra g e d to create and submit homemade Valentine’s Day cards. Last year, the community helped Blue Ridge collect and deliver more than 10,000 cards to 105 local organizations. Blue Ridge will accept submissions through Tuesday, Feb. 3. Ahmad recommends at least seven hours of sleep a night for adults and as much as 10 hours a night for children. “It should be quality sleep, deep sleep when you get to all of the sleep s t a g e s ,” s a i d A h m a d . “ There are all different levels of sleep apnea, and for most sleep apneas, they should be treated by a CPAP (a machine that delivers a constant flow of pressurized air during sleep). If it’s something simple and there is no excessive daytime sleeping, we tell patients to simply lose weight. If you lose 10% of your body weight, you may lose 50% of your sleep apnea. If you lose 20% of your body weight, then there’s a good chance you may not have it.” According to Ahmad, up to 20% of the national population has experienced sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are more common

in men, people who have allergies or sinus issues and people with obesity, and there are genetic factors involved with their frequency. “I think it’s still underdiagnosed,” said Ahmad. “(Sleep disorders are a) risk factor for cancer. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for stroke. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for dementia and other diseases. It affects your immunity. It can produce hypertension, which leads to heart disease.” Because he practices what he preaches, Ahmad is his No. 1 patient. “Nine p.m. is bedtime, and 5 in the morning is when I get up,” said Ahmad. “I wake up at 5 every single day, even on weekends. Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County is offering Good News Club (GNC), an afterschool program for children ages 5 to 12, at various elementary schools and churches throughout Lancaster County. Mack Tomlinson has been a Baptist minister of the gospel for 51 years. He served four churches in pastoral ministry since 1977. Mack served as a pastoring elder at Providence Chapel in Denton Texas since 2000 and now exercises a wider itinerary ministry in the U.S. and other countries consistently, as pastor emeritus and member of Providence Chapel. Advoz Plans Mediation Trainings

Advoz will offer several training sessions on mediation and restorative practices. Basic Mediation Training will take place on Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 27 and 28 and March 6 and 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at a location yet to be announced. This training aims to equip participants to apply the facilitative me di at ion mo del in a range of disputes, with an optional second certificate to mediate with families making challenging transitions in their parenting custody or experiencing a separation or divorce. The other sessions will cover a variety of topics, including mediation models, resolution strategies, and ethics guidelines. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000. Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.

Steve Loewen from pg 1 and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. “He was always in a w he elch air, b u t we never saw him as being in a wheelchair,” said Dissinger, a resident of New Holland. “Steve really never talked about it. He didn’t want to talk about it because it didn’t define who he was. He said he had some dark times, and he did struggle.” It was Loewen’s and Dissinger’s love for New Holland, entrepreneurship and local collectibles that united them as friends. “Through the years, I just knew who he was,” said Dissinger. “As I got older, I became interested in New Holland memorabilia and I would go to

auctions and Steve was there, and we would bid against each other. Sometimes he would look over and say, ‘You can have it,” and stopped his bidding. And I’d do the same thing for him. One day he came over to me and said, ‘Why are we doing this? Why can’t we work together?’ We had a lot of the same interests, and from that we became really good friends.” “He hopefully inspired ever yone who came in contact with him, and not just those in his inner circle,” added Dissinger. “He didn’t let a wheelchair hold him back. He always said, ‘My mouth and brain haven’t stopped working.’ He could still do some things.”
