ibraries have always been synonymous with reading, books and learning. In New Holland, the Eastern Lancaster County Public Library (ELANCO Library) has become synonymous with community. The local library is a community in and of itself, one that reflects the larger surrounding community that it serves. “This is a wonderful, close-knit community where many people know each other’s names,” said Jen Watson, ELANCO Library’s interim director and youth services coordinator. “The library and staff strive to create a friendly and welcoming place for everyone who walks in our door. But it also possesses the power to inspire others and create social awareness. “My parents were a tremendous influence on me,” said Trimble. “My parents weren’t people of means, but they did the right things. Leo’s Helping Paws Is All About the Dogs BY GEORGE DEIBEL

It’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own. “At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. In order to get them adopted, first they had to be vetted, because that’s protocol for a rescue.” Leo’s Helping Paws’ mission is to provide financial assistance for veterinary care to nonprofit all-volunteer dog rescue groups in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The organization, made up of 40 volunteers, has also assisted outfits in Ohio, Ne w York , Mar yland, Ne w Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware. Anyone wishing to donate, volunteer, or apply for a grant can go to www.leoshelpingpaws.org. Leo’s Helping Paws, based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. Bird Club Posts Meeting, Field Trip The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Jennifer Sliko from Audubon Mid-Atlantic will present “Cerulean Warbler Habitat in the Kittatinny Ridge.” Cerulean warblers, once widespread in the eastern U.S ., have declined by about 70% since 1966 due to habitat loss and degradation. Sliko will discuss the Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape, which provides critical breeding

habitat and has implemented targeted forest management to restore the structural diversity these birds need. The ridge also helps buffer biodiversity from the impacts of climate change, supporting long-term resilience for forest-dwelling species. Sliko is a geoscientist and conservation professional with more than 17 years of experience spanning environmental research, education, and policy. In 2024, she joined Audubon Mid-Atlantic ’s Healthy Forest Program and acts as the external lead for the

Kittatinny Ridge Conservation Landscape, where she works with municipalities and partners to advance conser vation planning, habitat restoration, and collaborative re s o u rc e m a n a g e m e n t across the region. ELANCO Library is an independent member of the Library System of Lancaster County, which supports the operations of 18 local libraries. The Library System of Lancaster County provides ELANCO Library with its computer system, technology support, a shared catalog of items and a delivery system for common materials. EL ANCO Librar y was established in 1933 by the New Holland Business and Professional Women’s Club. Thirty-two years later, ELANCO Library hired a librarian and relocated to a space at the New Holland Borough Hall. The local librar y also hosts educational programs, seasonal events, speakers, kids’ story times and community gatherings. “At a time when some libraries are seeing a decline in usage, the EL ANCO Library statistics show a steady increase in usage,” said Watson. “We strive to continuously adapt to the changing needs of our community, so we are always a relevant, practical and accessible resource to our patrons. We serve a broad geographic region, and we take seriously our mission to serve everyone in our service area, but there are still some residents who are not familiar with what we have to offer at our library.” E L A N C O L i b r a r y ’s i n te n d e d s e r v i ce a re a includes the townships of Caernarvon, East Earl and Earl and the boroughs of Ter re Hill and New Holland, an area with a total population of about 25,000 residents. In 2024, ELANCO Library received 56,646 total visits, most of which originated from its service area. “Since we are close to Garden Spot High School and Middle School, parents feel safe allowing their children to use the library as a place to participate in enriching programs, find new reading material or just hang out,” said Watson. People come to the library to use items that they do not have at home, to take advantage of our current, extensive collection and have access to technology.” Situated at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, ELANCO Library is not only a safe space for everyone, but also a community hub - a place where individuals gather to interact, where kids often enjoy their first learning experiences and where local organizations and agencies meet. Watson took over for Anna D’Agostino, who left the library in the fall of 2025. “We have a lot of diverse readers coming to the library, representing many different interests - homeschoolers, seniors, lifelong learners and those who need access to the internet and computers,” said Watson. “As an example, we provide curriculum materials for homeschooling families, new and classic books and movies, various STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and literacy programs. We also host community programs like homeschool curriculum swaps and book clubs.” The 12,000-square-foot ELANCO Library building is home to more than 42,000 items and materials, like books, DVDs, audiobooks, learning kits and American Girl dolls. Many of those items are free to check out with a current library card.

Emily Smucker-Beidler said that she doesn’t know if she prefers teaching art or being an artist. T he West Hempfield Township resident will be able to do both during the hands-on Redware Ornaments Workshop, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The event is for people 13 years old and up. There is a fee to participate; Mennonite Life members receive a discount on tickets. The cost of materials is included. that they can pick up at Mennonite Life four weeks after the activity. “Redware refers to the kind of clay which was used by the early American potters,” Smucker-Beidler said. “Many of them were farmers, and they would find a vein of clay in their field. The legend is that they would walk around the field, and wherever it didn’t make a footprint they knew that there was clay underneath there. They ’d dig up that clay and process it and make it into functional items. This was something that was brought over from Europe, but it’s a very early American craft. They needed functional items to use. They started making pottery, and the potters would make it and then sell it.” Smucker-Beidler explained how the process

works. “In my workshops, everyone has a prepared slab of clay,” she said. “The slab has been rolled out, smoothed, painted with the white slip (which is watered-down clay), and gotten to a point where it is what we call cheddar c h e e s e - h a rd o r l e a t h er-hard. That means that it’s not f loppy, it’s not wet, but it’s not so hard that it’s going to break off in chunks. It’s that sweet spot where you can take the cookie cutters and cut out the shapes that you want for your ornaments.” Attendees may use their own design or choose one of Smucker-Beidler’s suggestions. “I have handouts of traditional Pennsylvani a Ger man desig ns that were used on actual pottery in the 1700s, and I show how to transfer those designs and start carving them,” she said. “I think it’s important when you’re learning these traditional crafts that you go back to the source, so I made an image collection, and these are all images from the 1700s and 1800s. I have just a little talk that goes along with these, so people can understand the history and what was involved in it and just how amazing some of these early American redware potters were.” I f yo u s e le c t one o f the designs found in the books, Smucker-Beidler

encourages adding some personal touches. “We talk about how to take those traditional designs that I’ve copied from some of them and how to make them your own,” she said. “The first step in a folk art is learning what has come before us, but the real step where you’re really showing your individuality is when you take that and make it your own in some way. I’m amazed at how different all of the ornaments look after people take my class, and I get ideas as an artist as well.” Smucker-Beidler is retired after a 33- year teaching career, which included stints at Landisville Primary Center and Yo r k S u b u r b a n H i g h School. “I had access to all of the supplies, and as I’ve just really delved into the Pennsylvania German traditions and folk arts and especially the visual imagery,” she said. “All of that media was there for me to play with, to see how it translated, and I wanted to learn the history to teach my students the history of what they were doing.” Smucker-Beidler now holds a variety of workshops, with 11 scheduled between now and March 14. “I’ve had some great experiences with a grandparent bringing a grandchild and the two of them doing a workshop

Conestoga River on Ballot for River of the Year The Conestoga River is in the running for River of the Year for 2026, and the Conestoga River Club and partners encourage everyone in the Conestoga watershed to vote. T he Pe n n s y l va n i a Organization for Waters he d s a nd R i ve rs , a n affiliate of the Pennsylv a n i a E nv i ro n m e n t a l Council, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources, awards one Pennsylvania river the status of River of the Year each year. This year, the Conestoga River Club nominated the Conestoga River to be on the ballot, with support from nearly 20 partner o r g a n i z at i o n s i n a n d around the Conestoga R iver watershed. T he Conestoga is one of three

rivers on the ballot. Now the vote is up to the general public. People may vote for the River of the Year at https:// pawatersheds.org/vote -for-a-2026-river-of -the- year/. T he ballot will be open until Friday, Jan. 16, and the Conestoga River Club’s goal is to get at least 10,000 votes for the Conestoga River. I know the money is being used wisely, I like that it’s a local organization and that it’s flowing to an end result.” Trimble initially became better acquainted with Aaron’s Acres’ mission through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s A c re s , Tr i m b l e b e g a n pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donations with even more of his funds. At the beginning, Trimble ’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s Acres; it just sort of accumulated that way. “If we had a good year, I’d donate a little more,” said Trimble. “Each year we’d donate money. Over the first few years, I really didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Then it kind of became, ‘Let’s see if we can do a little better than last year.’ It’s kind of evolved. We didn’t start with a specific goal.” In his role as a Realtor, Trimble receives a lot of requests from local schools, churches and organizations to donate money or to support fundraisers. His contributions can also serve as business marketing or as a way to promote goodwill in the community. “I’m successful, and I want to give back,” said Trimble. “My father always told me that society func-

The nonprofit is named after Leo, a tri-colored corgi that was adopted in 2009. “We’re just very passionate about rescue because there’s so many dogs out there that need homes,” said Styer. Styer said most of the dogs the organization helps are abandoned or come from a breeding facility. “Because of some switches in the laws, the breeders will reach out to rescues to take the dogs when they’re done breeding them,” she said. In October, there was a rescue in Delaware that rescued 61 dogs from a breeder facility. “ We gave them $10,000 to treat every dog, to get their initial exams and all the bloodwork and things like that,” said Styer. “That was our largest grant

ever.” Styer and Buchter also aid dogs as a side project unrelated to Leo’s Helping Paws. “(Recently) Beth and I, we picked up two 7-month-old corgis that didn’t sell from a breeder in Honey Brook,” said Styer. Leo’s Helping Paws usually holds one fundraiser a month. One of its biggest is the annual bake sale. This year’s event will be Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ephrata Agway, 731 W. Main Street. Hot dogs, snacks, and beverages will also be for sale. There will be chances to win prizes, as well. WellSpan Health Announces Appointment WellSpan Health has appointed Orie Chambers to the role of vice president for the health system as well as president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. In this position, Chambers now oversees operations of the 141-bed community hospital and hospital-based services throughout the region, ensuring coordination with systemwide processes for patient safety, quality, care management, performance improvement and patient experience. Chambers, who has clinical service in the United States Air Force, has been serving in the role in an interim capacity for the past eight months.
