CrossNet Schedules First Drive-In Dinner And Auction By Ann Mead Ash
For several years, CrossNet Ministries has held an annual evening gala in the fall in the beautiful gardens at Garden Spot Village (GSV). This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers reimagined the event several times before hitting upon the idea of a Drive-In Dinner and Auction fundraiser. “We are excited to offer this safe and fun event for the community, said Meredith Dahl, director of CrossNet Ministries. “It has been a challenging season for everyone, and we are looking forward to having a fun, memorable evening. The dinner and auction will be held outside at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Sept. 19. The meal will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendee’s cars will be spaced so that they are safely socially distanced
in Lot 9, which is the same lot that has been utilized for the gala. Dahl noted that event coordinators will be present to direct people to park. According to Dahl, attendees can choose to stay in their vehicles or bring lawn chairs to sit in front of their car. She advised those who take part to dress comfortably. In the field adjacent to the lot will be a stage with an LED screen. Dahl said that the stage will be high enough to make it easy for spectators to see. In addition, attendees will be directed to tune to a specific radio setting to easily hear the event, which will include live musical entertainment. “It will be upbeat music, a mix of ’50s and some newer songs with a fun vibe, said Dahl. Appetizers; beverages, including soda and lemonade; and dinner will be served to attendees in their cars. The meal will be prepared by GSV in partnership with another food provider. See CrossNet pg 3

When the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) reluctantly canceled its annual carnival in May, it turned to food trucks to make up the lost revenue. “Food - that’s what a lot of people come (to the carnival) for, related Peter Taraborelli, MFC public information officer and firefighter. Due to the short notice and the safety guidelines in place at the time, the food truck event included primarily carnival vendors and was operated as a drive-through. Still, the turnout was encouraging. “We wound up having a successful event. We raised $13,000, Taraborelli said.
MHALC Launches CMAP By Ann Mead Ash
Meredith Dahl (left), director of CrossNet Ministries, and Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries with CrossNet, are preparing for the organization’s first Drive-In Dinner and Auction, to be held at Garden Spot Village on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Planning A Successful Food Truck Event
During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project, said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance See MHALC pg 2

The 2019 carnival generated $18,000, so MFC opted to host a second food truck event in July to make up the shortfall. “We wanted to capitalize on the fact that people were still bored, stuck local, still not going on vacation, Taraborelli said. “We had time to plan, so we wanted to make sure we brought in some local favorites that people were asking about. Unfortunately, rain on the first night and high heat and humidity on the second negatively impacted the proceeds from the July event. However, MFC is considering making a food truck fundraiser a regular part of its schedule beginning fall 2021. “People really do love food truck events, Taraborelli remarked. “Lancaster County seems to be the mecca for some unique food trucks. See Food Truck Event pg 5
Mountville Fire Company has held two food truck fundraisers this year, with the first one having a drive-through format. Food truck events can be fun neighborhood activities if organized and promoted well.
