GEARS will offer pickleball lessons for people age 16 and up at the gym at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 4, 9 and 11, from noon to 1 p.m. for beginners and from 1 to 2 p.m. for intermediate players. Lessons will cover basic techniques, rules and strategies. All equipment will be provided.

Swim lessons will be available for people age 4

and older on Saturdays, Jan. 6 to Feb. 24, at the Masonic Village Patton Pool, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown.

Parent and Child Swimming will be held from 8 to 8:30 a.m. (A) for children age 6 to 24 months and from 8:40 to 9:10 a.m. (B) for children ages 2 to 3. For children ages 4 to 5 years, classes will be Tadpole from 9:20 to 9:50 a.m. and Guppy from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Other classes will be Frog from 10:40 to 11:10 a.m., Seahorse from 11:20 to 11:50 a.m., and Seal/ Dolphin/Shark from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Feel Good Yoga, for people age 14 and older of all fitness levels, will be offered from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Mondays,

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry said children ages 2 to 5 should limit non-educational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be endured before the next holiday.

The holiday was followed by large gatherings of friends and family members who shared meals, played games, swapped stories and danced together. Gift giving did not have the same importance as it does in modern times, but rather it involved the exchange of small, sentimental presents on New Year’s Day. After nearly two weeks, Yuletide celebrations usually peaked on Twelfth Night with a large dinner party or a ball.

During each tour, guests are invited to explore the halls of Rock Ford’s historic mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War general Edward Hand.

The home will be transformed into a historically accurate re-creation of how it likely appeared when Hand dwelled there. Volunteers who are dressed in period-accurate clothing will be located throughout the rooms to answer guests’ questions, and meals that were popular in Colonial times will be prepared in the kitchen. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans who have qualifying financial needs. Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host Lantern Tours on Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 30.

Each day, tours will leave the visitor center every half hour, with the first tour at 6 p.m. and the last tour at 8 p.m.

United Way of Lancaster County utilizes Warm Homes, Warm Hearts to bring awareness to fuel poverty and energy burden in the community. A household is in fuel poverty when family members struggle to afford the energy required for adequate warmth and other essential energy services. Energy burden is the ratio of income to energy costs; for some, energy costs can peak at 30% of a household’s income. Health issues arise when an individual is unable to access the appropriate temperature in his or her home to stay warm in the coldest months.

The Rough Riders 4-H Horse and Pony Club will hold an in-person reorganizational meeting on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at the Refton Brethren in Christ Church, 110 Church St., Refton.

This meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and is intended for prospective new members and returning members ages 8 to 18 as of Monday, Jan. 1. The club recommends that parents of first-time members attend this meeting. Owning a horse is not required to be a 4-H horse club member. 4-H horse clubs provide educational opportunities but do not provide horses or riding lessons.
