Parade Will Highlight Holiday Traditions

Get into the Christmas spirit at the Elizabethtown Holiday Parade presented by MARS Wrigley. The parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6. It will kick off at 4 p.m. from the corner of College Avenue and South Market Street. The route will run north along Market Street from College Avenue to Hummelstown Street.

Local organizations, businesses and churches will join the Elizabethtown middle and high school bands in the parade. Additional entries will include dance performance groups, local emergency services and unicyclers, as well as an appearance by Santa Claus.

Where Faith Will Fuel Skills for Life

The story of Catalyst Ministries is the story of God at work. The nonprofit’s founders, Patrick and Gina McNally, credit their faith with laying the foundation for their vision to bring a skills-based learning center to Elizabethtown.

For almost 20 years, members of the Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682 have held a Holiday Breakfast with Santa as a way to give back to the community. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the Brossman Ballroom of the Freemasons Cultural Center, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown.

The meal will feature all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of toppings; sausage; and coffee, juice or water.

“The men make the food,” said Dennis O’Connor, current senior warden and past

“All of the groups entered in this year’s parade are excited to share their floats and bring guests a boost of holiday spirit,” Norman remarked. “You can expect to see

With a theme of Holiday Traditions, the parade promises to bring a festive atmosphere, said Karrie Norman, GEARS program coordinator. GEARS has organized the parade since 2017.

Their story starts in New Hampshire, where Patrick served as the director of a Christian camp and retreat. He realized the need for a Christian retreat center for people in the tri-state area, and he launched Catalyst Ministries in 2003. Headquartered in New York with a mission to reach children, youth and families with the life-changing truth of Jesus, the organization acquired a 110-acre property north of New York City, where the McNallys planned to create the retreat center.

“Our family of 10 was living on Long Island at that time, so we would travel two hours to our camp on the weekends to run the father/son, daddy/daughter and family retreats throughout the summer season,” Gina said. “It was a very fun and fruitful time in the rustic outdoors.”

They met roadblocks that prevented them from building a full-fledged retreat center, so that part of their vision never became a reality. God, however, did not give up on the McNallys’ plans.

“Through a long and very interesting, ‘only-God’ series of events, we moved to Elizabethtown in 2019, and following that we sold our New York camp property,” Patrick shared. “As we prayed about what God was leading us to next, we had a new vision on how we could have a life-changing impact on children, youth and families in the E-town area.”

Bird Club Posts Program, Meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has posted an upcoming special program and meeting.

The program will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens.

Ted Nichols, LCBC president, will present “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Christmas Bird Count Season!”

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), the world’s longest-running citizen science survey, began in 1900 as a new tradition to replace Christmas “side hunts,” where participants competed to see how many birds they could kill. The Lititz Christmas Bird Count, which covers Middle Creek and the surrounding area, dates to 1905, even before Middle Creek existed.

Nichols, who has been the compiler for the Lititz CBC since 2017, will share how the CBC brings bird enthusiasts together to celebrate conservation and commu-

nity. He will also tell about the CBC’s origins, its influence on birding in Lancaster County and beyond, and how bird occurrences in this area have evolved since the first count was conducted.

The program is free and open to the public. For information, call Nichols at 717-856-3851.

The club will meet on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Jeff Larkin and graduate students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present “Ornithology Research Update: Forest Birds.”

Larkin will introduce two of his graduate students, who will report on their master’s level research on ovenbirds and whip-poor-wills. Colin Lynch will present on his studies of the effects of forest structure on ovenbird abundance using LiDAR data. Nick Logan will discuss his use of autonomous recording units and a machine learning classifier to study the relationship between whip-poor-will abundance and time since prescribed fire. These research findings are part of a long-term ongoing effort to better understand the factors that affect the occupancy and abundance of at-risk species and diverse eastern forest bird communities.

Larkin is a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an American Bird Conservancy forest bird adviser.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.

For more information about the LCBC, visit www.lancasterbirdclub .org, www.facebook .com/lancasterbirdclub, or www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.

master of the Lodge. “It’s surprising how good men can cook when they’re put to the challenge to raise money for the community.”

He noted that the chefs set up six grills on the loading docks outside of the building, starting at 6 a.m. on the day of the breakfast. It takes a village of volunteers to pull off the event, which has hosted more than 2,200 people in the past.

“I have roughly 130 volunteers, and they start setting up Friday evening,” O’Connor said. “Our volunteers range in age from 12 years old to men in their 80s.”

Members of Masonic youth groups, including DeMolay International and Job’s Daughters, also volunteer at the breakfast.

People who attend the breakfast will enjoy a delicious meal, O’Connor said, while children will have the opportunity to share their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus, who will arrive at 8 a.m.

This year’s breakfast will also feature three giveaway prizes - a vintage train set, a Blackstone grill and a gift

- 5pm June 3, 8am - 2pm

basket - as well as a 50/50 giveaway.

Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the mission and outreach of the Lodge.

“As a Mason, our mission is to help those in need,” O’Connor said. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers. We’ve helped someone who was paralyzed get a chair to assist them in standing up. We’ve provided an accessory for someone to get in and out of their van. We donate to Masonic fraternal care. We help out with buying hospital equipment. We also provide three scholarships for Elizabethtown seniors.”

O’Connor encourages people to come to the breakfast and then head just up the road to an open house at the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club, located on the grounds of the village. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the 13th.

“This is our 19th year for this breakfast, and we’re always trying to think of ways to think outside the box and raise money that will go toward supporting people in our community,” O’Connor said. “Come on out and celebrate the holidays with us. Your donation helps others in the community, people who are less fortunate.”

Tickets are required to attend the breakfast and will be sold at the door. There is no charge for children age 5 and under.

Santa Claus will greet children at the annual Holiday Breakfast.

Winterfest Will Bring Cheer To Town

Every December, Main Street in Mount Joy becomes a living portrait of community spirit. Neighbors, churches, businesses and service clubs come together to host Winterfest, a celebration that wraps the town in lights, laughter and hometown pride.

The 27th annual Winterfest will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, along Main Street from Market to Barbara streets in Mount Joy. Representatives from various service organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Friends of Donegal and the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, will join community volunteers to host the festive event.

“Come for the kids’ activities, the music, the food and the crafts,” said Ferne Silberman, who is helping to organize Winterfest. “We have a huge area for the kids.”

Organizer Linda Eberly noted that Mount Joy Church of God donates the

use of its property for the kids’ area.

“We’ve put all of the kids’ activities in one area, making it easier for the parents,” Eberly said. “It’s a nice, large spot for families to gather.”

Children’s activities will include a petting zoo of alpacas from Eastland Alpacas; a Little Shoppers area, where children can purchase gifts for family and friends (by cash only);

Children can also register to win a playhouse provided by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. The winner will be drawn at the event.

Winterfest will also feature a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself. Santa will ride through town and arrive at Sheetz Funeral Home via a decked-out golf cart. The Santa experience and treats are sponsored by Sheetz Funeral Home, where clowns will be creating balloon art, which is sponsored by The Ferne Silberman Team. New this

year, stilt walkers, sponsored by Buch Funeral Home, will be navigating Main Street.

Winterfest will also feature lots of options for food, as well as musical performances and other entertainment.

“This year, we are interspersing the food vendors in with the other participants rather than having a separate area for food,” Eberly said.

Tables from nearly 50 local nonprofit organizations, school groups and churches will also be featured, and many of the groups will sell items as fundraisers for their organizations. Mount Joy-area businesses will also have stands with promotional materials, prize wheels,

used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

Care has volunteered to do the lights on the tree this year in coordination with Fire Department Mount Joy,” Silberman said, noting that Jeff Bollinger of Bollinger Mechanical was also instrumental in making sure the tree is the focus of the event. “Jeff repaired the star that was damaged last year during a wind event. If Jeff would not have been able to repair the star, we would have been looking at $2,000 or more to replace the star.” She also expressed thanks to Blake Brubaker for the use of the tree, which is on his property. Brubaker also provides storage for the ornaments, lights and star.

The Mount Joy Borough Police Department will hold a Toys for Tots gift drive located at Marietta Notary during Winterfest. Patrick’s background in the trades and Gina’s experience in education led them to create a skillsbased learning center.

In 2023, Catalyst Ministries purchased a building at 29 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

“We have been renovating this 8,400-square-foot building, section by section, solely with volunteers,” Gina said.

“We are currently creating a wood shop and a mechanical shop, and following that, we will be working on creating a kitchen to teach cooking, baking and nutrition.”

Patrick serves as executive director, and Gina is the organization’s secretary and director of Mommy & Me, Play & Learn, a program for mothers and their children up to age 5.

To make the skills center a reality, the McNallys are relying on community members to volunteer their time and talents to teach classes in the shops.

“This intergenerational connection between caring adults and young people is a missing link to creating a stable society,” Gina said. “We need adults who can come alongside the younger generation to model a

strong work ethic, as well as good habits for life, family, career and society. Young people need adults to spend time with them to pass on wisdom, knowledge, stories and friendship.”

Catalyst Ministries will offer two levels of volunteer options for adults. The organization is seeking adults who want to teach a skill, craft, hobby or passion, as well as adults who would like to serve as mentors to kids.

“A mentor is not only needed for supervision and to help facilitate the logistics of the class, but also to encourage the kids as they are being stretched to learn new skills,” Patrick said, adding that Catalyst will provide the training and clearances volunteers need.

The skills center will complement Mommy & Me, Play & Learn, which launched in September.

“We have nine moms and 19 children who meet every other week,” Gina said. “Our purpose is to encourage and mentor moms in their very important job in raising future generations. Registration is currently closed, but we have a waitlist, so check out our program on our website.”

As for the skills center, the projected date for pilot classes to start is spring of 2026.

“As you can imagine, creating these spaces and workshops in our building takes a ton of time, resources and expertise,” Patrick said. “God has provided in such incredible ways throughout the process. We are so thankful to Him for sending us the engineers, skilled carpenters, willing men and women, E-town College students and teens who have volunteered to do demo in a variety of spaces, stud out walls, hang sheetrock, put in doors, windows, concrete, oak flooring, steel beams, trim and paint walls, clean and more.”

The initial target age group for the skills center will be middle school students, but the McNallys hope to expand their reach as they grow programs and recruit volunteers, teachers and mentors.

“We have a multi-level, many-phase vision that includes many facets,” Gina said. “The possibilities only stop with the imagination.”

To learn more about the center or sign up for the Mommy & Me waitlist, visit www.catalyst-pa.org.

Model Railroad Club Sets Open Houses

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold four open houses scheduled to celebrate the holiday season. Open houses will be held on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Railroad-themed event will offer seven scales of model trains running on more than 1,600 feet of track in the club’s space, which fea-

tures new scenes.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. During Saturday events, a shuttle service will be available between the Masonic Village and the Elizabethtown Public Library for guests wishing to visit the holiday train display at the library.

The Model Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. Once on

the campus, drivers may follow the directional signs. Ample parking will be available.

ENB Announces Letters to Santa Contest

Dine, Sing and Celebrate at Ruhl’s Church

Ephrata National Bank (ENB) has announced the three finalists for its fifth annual Letters to Santa Contest, an initiative created to support and celebrate the nonprofit organizations making a meaningful difference across the communities ENB serves.

Each year, Letters to Santa invites community members to nominate their favorite 501(c)(3) organizations by submitting a letter describing the impact the organization has on the lives of others. Entries include stories of hope, service, education and support, reflecting the many ways nonprofits strengthen Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties.

After receiving and reviewing the first 50 eligible submissions, ENB’s internal judging committee evaluated entries based on story impact and the potential impact of a financial gift.

The first entry that has been selected as one of this year’s finalists is One Luv Outreach. Based in Reading, the nonprofit aims to

bring “love and light” to the community through weekly family-friendly gatherings and weekly distributions of essentials, including food, clothing, toiletries and toys. The outreach is rooted in Christian faith and emphasizes sharing hope through the Gospel.

The second finalist is Milagro House. Located in Lancaster, Milagro House empowers women with children who are experiencing homelessness through a holistic, two-generational model. Its core programs include residential housing, education, life-skills training and intensive case management. Since education is central, Milagro House supports mothers working on their GED or pursuing postsecondary education to break the cycle of poverty.

Green Meadow Farm in Leola is the third finalist. The farm provides free, individualized mentoring and equine-assisted lessons to children and teens who have experienced trauma or emotional hardship.

Encouraging people to come to a Community Christmas Dinner at Ruhl’s Church, volunteer Kris Gray said the festivities will include great food and an opportunity to join in Christmas caroling after the meal.

“Bring your friends and family!” she said. “It is a delicious free meal and is open to all.”

The meal will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

The menu will feature baked ham, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert.

Ruhl’s Church began hosting the event 10 years ago.

“We wanted to include

people who were not able to join us for Christmas Eve service, so in 2015, we started a free sit-down ham dinner,” Gray shared. “We continued hosting the event for several years until the pandemic hit and we changed to a drive-through event.”

The drive-through meal was very well received. It also included a “Drive to Bethlehem,” featuring scenes from the Christmas story. It continued in that fashion through 2023, but the church members realized they missed the connection they experienced with a sit-down meal.

“Last year, we decided to host a more personal dine-in event so we could enjoy some sweet fellowship with members of our community,” she explained. “Everyone who attended said they enjoyed the event because it gave them a chance to slow down and enjoy a great meal with friends.”

The event is much more than a meal for the church members, she said.

“Our congregation wants to extend hospitality to our community as we share the joy of the Christmas season,” Gray explained. “We want people to know the real meaning of Christmas and how it can bring lasting joy and hope in this troubled world.”

Along with the Christmas meal, Ruhl’s Church members invite the community to attend a Christmas Eve service. The candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24. Ruhl’s Church is handicapped-accessible, and parking is available in a large lot. Reservations are required to attend the Christmas dinner and must be made by Sunday, Dec. 7. To make a reservation, call 717-665-4499 and leave a message if there is no answer.

People enjoy a previous year’s Christmas dinner at Ruhl’s Church.

Some of the show’s new areas and events will include a Beauty on Budget Sale area located in the Equine Arena, with 90% off on a variety of women’s clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories; Christmas Music Bingo on Friday, Dec. 5, and Dec. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m.; a Macaroni KID Jingle Bell Family Fun Zone, featuring activities such as face painting, balloon creations, a Lego play station, and holiday crafts; and Santa’s Village, where children can play in playhouses provided by Fontana Outdoors. Also

new this year, parking will be free after 3 p.m.

Some of the show’s special events, which will include various admission discounts, will include Girls’ Night Out on Dec. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m., Country Christmas Night on Dec. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m., Friends & Family Day on Dec. 6 from 1 to 5 p.m., and Hero Day on Dec. 7. Attendees may also receive an admission discount every day after 4 p.m. at the box office.

Other features of the

show will be an opportunity to meet Karolyn Grimes, author and actress in “It’s A Wonderful Life”; a maker’s market with handcrafted items in the North Hall; pop-up caroling in the Cameron Street Lobby on Dec. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m.; and Deck the Paws, a dog fashion show with adoptable dogs, on Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. Santaland, where attendees may take free photos with Santa in his sleigh, will be open from Dec. 3 to 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec.

Breakfast With Santa Planned

The Lancaster County Young Marines, in partnership with Marine Corps League Detachment 294, will host Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 10 a.m. at 2340 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Guests may visit with Santa between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m. The menu will include scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, doughnuts, bananas, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, chocolate milk, and whole milk. Attendees are asked to bring an age-appropriate chapter book or a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

strengthened through the challenges of raising a child with a severe intellectual disability. She will highlight how God redeemed devastating circumstances into a testimony of His grace and goodness, leading to a life of purpose and a ministry, Jessica and Friends Community, that provides faith-based services for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities.

Paulette and her husband, Peter, have both worked in different levels of the education field. They have co-authored a book sharing their journey with Jessica and God’s faithfulness, “Jessica’s Story - But

God,” published in 2023. Paulette also ministered in various roles alongside her husband as he served as president of Lancaster Bible College for 21 years. The couple has four children and 10 grandchildren. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule. Neighbors Sharing and Caring will take a break for Christmas and will resume meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be a Christmas Lego Village, a 165foot model train display, a Christmas tree lane, an entertainment stage, and a Winter Wonderland.

someone you know or an organization/business that you have patronized among the 50-plus groups that will be participating!”

Along with having fun, parade entries are eligible to win a variety of prizes. Trophies will be awarded for groups in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Holiday Spirit, Best Performance and Best Overall Appearance.

Returning judges will be Caroline Lalvani, director of public affairs at Elizabethtown College; Brett Thackara, meteorologist at ABC 27; and Damien Weaver, plant director at MARS Wrigley.

“The parade is presented by MARS Wrigley who also provides all of the candy that is given out during the parade,” Norman said.

The parade is just one of many community events GEARS hosts throughout the year. With a mission of con -

necting people of all ages through recreation, learning, child care and senior center services that strengthen the community and the quality of life of residents, GEARS was founded in 1976 as Elizabethtown Area Recreation Commission. It was renamed GEARS (Greater Elizabethtown Area Recreation & Community Services) in 2000. GEARS was honored with the Elizabethtown Chamber’s Non-Profit of the Year Award for 2025.

Hosting the parade is an annual highlight for GEARS staff, Norman said, adding, “It’s a joy to be part of this event that brings together the community and is something that will create core memories for all ages.”

The parade will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit www.getintogears.org or follow “GEARS” on Facebook.

The cost of the meal is by donation. All proceeds will support the Lancaster County Young Marines program, helping to build leadership, discipline, and service in local youths.
