Two Train Displays Will Spark Holiday Wonder

“Trains and the holidays go together,” said John Monti, president of the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club. He invites people to embrace their inner child and visit not one, but two elaborate model train displays in town. One will be featured at the railroad club building on Freemason Drive on the Masonic Village campus, and the other will be showcased in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

To make it easy for people to visit both, a free shuttle service provided by Masonic Village will run between the two displays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20.

“Parking is at a premium at the library, so this is a great way for people to see both displays and not have to worry about parking,” Monti

said, noting that the Masonic Village display is in a building with a large parking lot. “We love inviting people to both displays. We have people who go to the library’s display and don’t even know the Masonic trains exist, and vice versa.” Both displays feature operational trains of various scales.

“We have seven different layouts and various sizes, from standard gauge, which is the largest, to Z gauge, which is the smallest, and everything in between,” Monti shared.

Scenes change regularly, so even if people have visited the display in the past, they’re sure to see something

For more than a decade, members of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 1008 have been visiting local high schools, sharing their stories of their experiences with students. That tradition continued in October at Manheim Central High School, with upcoming presentations at Donegal High School on Monday, Dec. 8; Garden Spot High School on Tuesday, Dec. 16; Elizabethtown Area High School on Thursday, Dec. 18; and Lampeter-Strasburg High School on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

“This group is a really good thing,” said veteran Patrick Gibson. “We all have different stories. We

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Elizabeth Room at The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, will fill with the warmth of Christmas. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Milandila - a local nonprofit partnering with village communities in Uganda - will host its Christmas Fundraising Event, a celebration with a purpose that reaches across continents.

“Come and be encouraged!” said Shannon Medich, Milandila’s director of partnership development. “It’s a casual setting, free and a drop-in. It’s family-friendly, or you could come and not know anyone and still leave smiling. When you hear stories of lives being transformed by Christ, you will want to be part of what God is doing.”

The event will feature Christmas cookies and coffee, along with a lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each lunch will feature a pulled pork or chicken sandwich, a side dish, chips and a beverage. Handcrafted Ugandan items will be for sale, and a holiday dessert auction, hosted by auctioneer Dave Conley of Rentzel’s Auctions in Mount Wolf, will begin at 1 p.m. Attendees may bid on more than 50 desserts to benefit the organization’s expansion efforts.

People from Community Bible Church in Marietta and Elizabethtown Alliance Church will provide the desserts.

“There are about 25 bakers offering one or two desserts each. Each one is a masterpiece!” Medich said. “(There will be) incredible

new this year, he noted.

Members of the club will be on hand for the open houses, and they love to answer questions from visitors and highlight what the members have been working on.

The club also gives back to the community. Donations from visitors support Masonic Village projects, including programs at the children’s school on-site and funding for fraternal care for residents in need.

Additional donations help maintain the display and keep it running every year.

The partnership with The Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Library is a natural fit and benefits both groups, said Craig Coble, Train Guys coordinator.

“When people come to see our display, they can expect to see a toy

train display that grew out of proportion from what people used to do in their homes,” he said. “We’re all just a bunch of old guys who never outgrew playing with our toys.”

Filling a large room on the lower level of library, The Train Guys’ display features a variety of gauges as well.

“When people come in the entryway, they’ll see a standard-gauge outfit,” Coble shared. “This is like stepping back in time about 100 years.”

Fifty push buttons are located throughout the display, giving visitors an opportunity to activate trains and accessories.

And like the Masonic Village club, members of The Train Guys will be on-site to answer questions.

“These displays are a chance for both of these groups to teach history,” Coble said. “We talk about how the toys were made over a 100-year

period, manufacturing techniques and how they changed.”

And also like the Masonic Village club, The Train Guys give back through their display, with suggested donations for admission benefitting the library.

Like Monti and Coble, Masonic Village resident Jim Smith loves talking to visitors about trains. He’s also the vice president of the on-campus woodshop, and for the third year in a row, that site will be open during the same hours as the train display on four days in December.

“We will not be operating our machines, so that will allow guests to come in and get an up-close-andpersonal view of our shop and our equipment,” Smith said of the woodshop that produces wood items for

sale. “We can custom build anything to fit a certain size or niche.”

The woodshop is located just up the road from the train building, and Smith hopes people will visit both sites to ask questions and learn.

“Not only is it fun for the youngsters to look at everything, but especially with the trains, we get to talk about railroad folklore and the history of railroads,” he said. “Some of us lived through what these kids only know about from books, and it’s great to share that history with them.”

All of the guys hope people will make a visit to the train displays and the woodshop a part of their holiday plans.

“Everyone sees the child in themselves when they come here,”

had many similar experiences, but we also had our own experiences.”

Gibson, who served as a medic during the Tel Offensive, was a history teacher in York County and said he appreciates this opportunity to share living history with the younger generation.

“There’s nothing like having different people talking about the same thing but giving their unique perspective,” he said. “This program keeps the kids interested, because it isn’t just one person standing up there giving a lecture.”

At every presentation, education committee chair John Hoober starts the program by having each veteran introduce himself. Then, he reminds the students that the program is their opportunity to engage with the panelists.

“We want to know, ‘What do you want to know about the Vietnam War

and the Vietnam War era?’” he told a group at Manheim Central. “We’re not here to teach a history lesson. We want to answer your questions.”

Students at the program asked questions about everyday life for the men while they were on active duty. They want to know how they communicated with friends and family back home (writing letters, the veterans told them, since access to a phone was rare) and what their biggest challenges were (“staying alive,” said veteran Mike Mazzaro).

For the guys, the program provides an opportunity to share their stories and relive a time in their lives that still impacts them today, more than 50 years later.

Bob Chavous was drafted into the Army in May of 1968. Throughout his two years of service, he earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action, received two Purple Hearts and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for flying 25 helicopter combat assaults in 30 days.

He came home with stress and anxiety from his experience. At the suggestion of his therapist, he joined the veterans’group and began sharing his story with students.

“It has helped me tremendously to be part of this group,” he said. “For many years, I didn’t say anything about my service. A lot of guys don’t

layer cakes, black raspberry pie, cinnamon rolls, pecan pie, trays of assorted Christmas cookies, almond cake with chocolate ganache icing, carrot cake with cream cheese icing, a chocolate cake with raspberry filling - frosted with chocolate icing, lemon cream cheese dump cake, whoopie pie cake, angel food cake and dozens and dozens more!”

All proceeds will directly benefit the event’s goal of raising $108,730 for a ministry expansion project and associated operating costs.

At 12:30 p.m., missionaries James and Morgan Tumwesiigye will share stories from Milandila Community Missions, the nonprofit they founded after moving to Uganda in 2021. The organization’s name, taken from the Baganda tribe, means “root, foundation or beginning.” It’s a fitting description for a ministry committed to building relationships

Monti said, “and when we see that happening, it makes us feel good.”

The Train Guys will kick off their display with a First Responders Night on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. Regular hours follow from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20, and on Second Friday, Dec. 12; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 27, with shuttle service to and from Masonic Village for the first three dates.

The Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 6, 13 and 20, with shuttle service to and from the library, as well as from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, and Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 3 and 4, 2026. The woodshop will be open the same hours as the train display on Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 20.

and supporting vulnerable mothers.

Milandila’s Family Center serves pregnant and postpartum women in the Luwero District, providing medical care, prenatal and postnatal classes, lactation education, life-skills training and ongoing support. The program already serves more than 100 mothers, with five to 10 new women arriving each week.

This year’s event marks the second time Milandila is bringing its work to life through a festive Christmas gathering. The idea began last year when the Tumwesiigyes were returning to Pennsylvania for the holidays.

“There are so many supporters who want to meet with them, so we thought it would be wonderful to have a time where everyone could hear an update on what God is doing in Uganda,” Medich said. “Because it was so close to Christmas, we thought of embracing the holiday season to offer handcrafted Christmas ornaments and Nativity sets that they brought with them from Uganda. And we thought of the auction because what a fun way to raise money while providing something everyone needs - baked goods at Christmas!”

Milandila is now expanding its Family Center into one of Uganda’s only Women’s and Babies’ Hospitals, a project that will dramatically increase access to safe birth options and maternal education.

“We are a small nonprofit, and by God’s grace, we are making big

impacts,” Medich said. “We believe that intentional building of relationships is one of the most effective ways to evangelize. When we take the time to know people - who they are, what they do, why they believe what they believe - we can share the Gospel in authentic and meaningful ways.”

Attendees at the Christmas event will be encouraged to support this expansion and Milandila’s frontline Gospel work. And for those who feel called to do more than give financially, Milandila also welcomes volunteer mission teams every February and June.

“If you have a heart to learn more or get involved, don’t hesitate to drop in,” Medich encouraged. “There is always room for one more in Great Commission work, and there is always an exciting way to be involved. God has gifted each one of us in different ways but called each of us to know Him and make Him known. Join us and figure out how you can best plug in.”

The event is free to attend, and no tickets or reservations are necessary. People with limited mobility and the elderly should reserve on-site parking. Ample parking will also be available at adjacent businesses as well as on-street parking in the blocks surrounding the location. To reserve parking or learn more about the organization, visit www.milandila. org or contact Medich at smedich@ milandila.org or 717-514-4356.

Veteran John Dobish, who served in the Army from 1968 to 1970, said the program matters because it connects the veterans to kids who are close to the age they were when they went to war.

“We let them know that we had to grow up differently than how they are growing up,” Dobish said. “I was 19 when I got drafted. I want these kids to know what we went through.”

Hoober emphasized that the students in the room could probably see themselves reflected in the soldiers who fought in Vietnam.

“Most of these guys were 18 or 19 years old,” he said. “This was a young person’s war.”

Students at the presentations want to know details about what the soldiers ate for meals, how they handled the terrain and weather conditions, how they were treated upon their return to the United States, and if their feelings about the war have changed over time.

Responding to that last question, Hoober said, “The short

After each presentation, the veterans meet in small groups with students, sharing memorabilia and photographs they’ve brought with them from their time in Vietnam.

It’s an opportunity to underscore the real history of our military, Gibson said.

“I don’t like when students only see the Hollywood version of Vietnam,” he remarked. “I want them to know what really happened.”

The veterans’ school visits are part of the ongoing mission of VVA Chapter 1008 to educate the public about the Vietnam War and honor those who served. The group also participates in community service, such as ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the holidays and sending sympathy cards to families of deceased Vietnam veterans.

Chapter 1008 welcomes new recruits who served on active duty in Vietnam between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between August 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. For more information, visit https://vva.org.
