Honoring Veterans in Marietta BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Honoring veterans is important to the board of the Marietta Community House, said Nancy Kulman, board secretary. With a long history of recognizing veterans, the organization will host a special event on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. The Marietta Community House is located at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. “I would encourage people to come to honor our veterans who served our country and for those currently serving,” Kulman said. “They deserve our thanks and gratitude.” Although the event is organized by the Marietta Community House, multiple community groups and individuals will participate in the program. Members of the Marietta Legion Post No. 466 will join the community house in recognizing all local heroes, including Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, in whose honor the community house was formed. The Honor Guard from Boy Scout Troop 53 will present the colors, and Rep. Tom Jones will discuss what Veterans Day means to him and remember those who have served. Local historian James Landis will present a brief history of Marietta veterans and their contributions to our country throughout the years. Other local officials and members of Marietta Legion Post No. 466 will also share their stories, and Donegal High School student Lily Graybill will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and other patriotic songs. “ The Marietta Community House was formed in honor of Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who died in WWI,” Kulman said. See Veterans pg 3

A wide variety of wooden items will also be available for purchase, including poinsettias, gingerbread men, C hr istmas trees, angels, bird houses and more. “We’ve got new wreaths and arrangements and a large selection of premade bows in different sizes and colors. There is a collection of crocheted items, including dish cloths, fun creature hats, adorable amigurumi animals and pumpkins,” Eshleman shared. “We’ve got macrame ornaments, wristlets, key chains, bracelets, angels and owls. There are beaded jewelry bracelets, necklaces and earrings in all colors.” Additional items for sale include angels made from recycled hymnals; ornaments; and paper crafts, such as gift bags, memo pads and journals. Food will be available for purchase as well. Lunch will be served both days, with a menu of hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, soup du jour, chips and drinks. Take-home quarts of chicken corn soup, beef vegetable soup and ham and bean soup will be available, along with pints of hamburger, pulled pork and pulled chicken barbecue. “Homemade baked goods, including cookies, brownies, cupcakes, breads, candy and snack mixes, are hard to resist and super popular,” Eshleman said. “Every year we make cute candy treats. This year we made Lindt tr uff le wreaths; York Peppermint Patty snowmen and flowers; Hershey bar grinches, scarecrows and snowmen; and Tootsie Pop turkeys and snowmen.” A White Elephant area at the bazaar will be stocked with gently used and reasonably priced books, puzzles, decorations and home goods, she added. People will also have the opportunity to seek stuffed turkeys along the route and bring one back to the finish line for a prize, she added. Finisher medals will be awarded to all 5K participants, and age-group awards will be presented for ever y 10- year age g ro u p a m o n g ra c e r s . Wells noted that the race has a festive atmosphere, and it’s the perfect way to kick off Thanksgiving Day. “ We are expecting a coffee truck, a DJ on-site and a professional photographer throughout the race,” she said. “It is a fun, family-friendly event where you can get out to exercise, support a great cause and spend some family time giving back to others.” The deadline for online registration is 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, but race-day registration will also be accepted in person. Veterans from pg 1 supplies to local students. Eshleman said the bazaar has become a tradition that many people in the community look forward to each year. “We started our yearly bazaar in 2007, when it was held for only one day,” she said. “In 2013, we went to a two-day bazaar and haven’t missed a year since.” For more information, visit www.zionmarietta .org or call 717-426-1884.

“The Marietta Community House’s purpose is ‘for the promotion of the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social and physical welfare of men, women and children in our community.’ It was felt that this would be an appropriate event to fulfill this purpose. We are pleased to join with the local American Legion Post No. 466 to honor our veterans, and (we) encourage others to join us.” Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the building that now houses the Marietta Community House remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, the Hiestands purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other orga-

nizations. It now serves as a wedding and special event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year. Kulman noted that following the ceremony, there will be a dedication of new bricks from the community house’s buy-a-brick program. “We also welcome those who wish to donate a brick in honor of a veteran,” she said. “This project honors and remembers local individuals and businesses. A reading of the inscriptions will occur, as well as comments from the donors.” Money raised through the brick project has been used to repair and maintain the Marietta Community Ho u s e fo r u s e b y t h e community. The program will conclude with a brief reception and refreshments. There is no charge to attend, and the event is open to the public. Skills such as quilting, gardening, sewing and cooking connect us to the everyday lives of earlier generations - their creativity, resourcefulness and care for others.” She emphasized that the show offers a way to highlight both the art and the artisans. “The artisans participating in our Heritage Craft Show carry these traditions forward, bringing their own creativity and skill to every piece they make. A Market With a Mission BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Ten years ago, friends Chelsey Harnly and Stephanie Rogers sought a way to showcase their small businesses and support others like theirs in the community. “Stephanie and I saw a need for an affordable vendor show for our friends in the area,” Harnly recalled. “We both had businesses and couldn’t get into any of the vendor shows around because the waitlists were so long or the prices to get in were too pricey for us. We also wanted to have a fundraiser aspect so we could support local nonprofits that were special to us.” They found a solution by creating their own opportunity through Holiday Market on Adele. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim.

“There are over 30 local families and businesses selling items,” Rogers said. “We have a local farm, hot cocoa bombs, tea, honey, jewelry, rag dolls, Mary Kay, books, wooden trucks, sourdough bread and many others. We also will have a food stand and coffee cart.” And beyond shopping and eating, the event will also provide an opportunity to support Moms Connect, a local ministry that helps mothers of children with special needs. “ T he y have mee tups and special events for these moms and provide a support system for these mothers who may be overlooked,” Harnly explained. “The food stand will be run by the ladies from Moms Connect, so the money from that will be going back to them, and a portion of the sales of the coffee stand will be going to Moms Connect as well.” In the decade since the

market began, the event has continued to grow and thrive, Harnly said, and she and Rogers invite everyone out for the event. “This is such a fun event to see and support our local businesses and families in our community,” she said. “Some of these families are using the profits from these hobbies to meet certain personal goals, and what a cool way to help our neighbors in their goals.” T he building where the market will be held is handicapped-accessible, and there are restrooms available. While some vendors will accept cash only, others may take electronic payments, so shoppers should be prepared for either payment option. For more information, search for “10th Annual Holiday Market on Adele” on Facebook. For more infor mation on Moms Connect, visit www.moms connectmin.com.
