BUSING DISCUSSION

Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC) will host a public town hall meeting on Monday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the fellowship hall made available by Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St. The meeting will discuss upcoming busing changes that the Elizabethtown Area School District is slated to enact beginning with the 2019-20 school year, including how these changes will affect busing to and from the current early learning centers in the school district. ANNUAL BAZAAR

will present the church’s 46th annual bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Food will be available, including apple dumplings, pies, cakes, cookies, barbecue, assorted soups, hot dogs, beverages, and desserts. The church bazaar will feature a white elephant sale and attic treasures. Homemade items such as candy, jewelry, and crafts will also be for sale. Proceeds will benefit local missions and church projects.

Students at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) will present “The Man W ho Came to Dinner,” a comedy written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the school auditorium at 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

After deliberating over numerous options for the fall play, co-directors Christine Blaisdell and Jenn Rutkowski settled on “The Man Who Came to Dinner” as the right fit for the students they anticipated would be auditioning. “We really liked that this show was well-known, and we really like the story this tells. It takes place over a few weeks but really gets into the relationships between the characters,” shared

Blaisdell. “We had also wished for a unit set, and this show helped us to accomplish that.”

Set in the 1930s, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” follows opinionated and arrogant radio personality Sheridan Whiteside, portrayed by junior Carter Rutkowski, as he visits a small town in Ohio on a speaking tour. Whiteside injures himself after slipping on ice and becomes an unexpected houseguest of the Stanleys, a prominent local family. Whiteside does not hesitate to offer unsolicited advice to the family members, and when a romance begins between his assistant, Maggie Cutler, played by junior Claire Fritz, and local reporter Bert Jefferson, played by sophomore Evan Kready, he interferes as much as he can. “It’s hysterical, a n d t h e r e a r e a l o t o f t w i s t s ,” summarized Claire.

Handmade crafts and homemade food will be the main attractions at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3, for the church’s annual holiday bazaar. The event will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days.

Among the selection of crafts will be wreaths and floral arrangements; wooden flags, benches, owls, and pallet trees; crocheted animals, baskets, d i s h cloths, angels, and afghans; decorative items such as angels, snowmen, cork pumpkins, ribbon trees, candles, glass candle holders, and ornaments; beaded jewelry; gift bags; notepads; and candy favors.

All of the items are created by congregation members or friends of the church, noted organizer Mary Ann Eshleman. For Zion Lutheran, the bazaar is an event that everyone pitches in to make possible.

Monday, Nov. 12, in the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown’s Veterans Grove. Members of the public are invited to walk through and view the flag display at their leisure. The display will be lit for nighttime viewing. The Masonic Village at Elizabethtown is located at 1 Masonic Drive.

The National Sojourners Harrisburg Chapter 76 created the Massing of the Colors memorial in 2004 and has displayed the flags at Masonic Village since 2011. Volunteers from Masonic Village, the Sojourners and the community will help set up the nearly 7,000 American flags, including approximately 300 flags representing soldiers from Pennsylvania.

On Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., Masonic Village will host a Veterans Day program in the Freemasons Cultural Center’s Brossman Ballroom. A musical prelude

will begin at 1:30 p.m. The event will honor all U.S. military service personnel present and past, especially Korean War veterans. Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets from Cedar Cliff and Red Land high schools will present a 50-flag state flag parade. The guest speaker will be Maj. Gen. Kurt J. Ryan, G4 U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort Bragg, N.C. Ryan was deployed to the first Gulf War in Kuwait and Iraq, and his last service in Afghanistan, from 2011 to 2012, was as commander in the 10th Sustainment Brigade, headquartered in Bagram. His career has mostly focused on tactical formations, and he served twice as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, took two tours with the 101st Airborne Division, had a tour in Germany with the 1st

Armored Division, and was on duty with the 10th Mountain Division.

Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree from York College, and in 1987, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. He is a graduate of the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, the Logistics Executive Development Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College.

In addition to the crafts, another popular part of the annual event is a white elephant gift area. Gently used, lowcost items such as puzzles, games, books, decorations, and more will be available for shoppers to peruse and purchase.

Attendees may also pay to enter to win several giveaways for gift cards paired with homemade items.

Plenty of food and beverages will be available to purchase on both days at the bazaar, including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, chicken corn soup, ham and bean soup, and beef vegetable soup. Homemade baked goods such as candy, cookies, and pumpkin rolls will also be among the selection.

Plus, the church’s international gift shop will be open during the bazaar.

“We chose the date for this one because we wanted to help people before the holidays,” noted auxiliary president Jessica Klepping.

The Elizabethtown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 329 has approximately 475 members. Meetings take place at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. “We were pretty evenly matched with Dallastown,” said head coach Jenna Griest. “We’d go on a run, then they’d go on a run.”

The back-and-forth action left the Lady Bears on the wrong end of the opening set, 25-22 but they were able to even the match with a 25-19 set two victory. Dallastown tipped the match back in their favor by squeaking out a 31-29 set three win before closing out the match with a 25-17 set four victory.

“They pulled out the first set win, but in the second we were able to keep them out of their system with our serving which really limited their offense,” explained Griest. “We dug ourselves out of an early hole in the third set, by playing fantastic defense...but we just couldn’t quite pull out the win. Participants Sought For Study

Bible2School from pg 1 inspired to get involved with Bible2School in part because she had attended a similar after-school program known as the Good News Club when she was a child. “I realized the value of it because a lot of what I learned there really stuck with me,” Keener shared.

“The most important reason for students to attend Bible2School is so that they can learn to know Jesus, the savior of the world, and just to get that foundation,” said volunteer Karen Olweiler. “They are going to face a lot in school and in life, and having this as a foundation will help them.”

Keener added, “It’s a great opportunity for those that already go to church to reinforce what they’re already learning there.”

Olweiler, who serves as the site director for East High Street, said that some of the children who attend Bible2School attend church regularly while others go occasionally or not at all, but she emphasized that any child is welcome to join at any point in the school year.

Registration forms are available in either school’s office, or interested parents and guardians may register

their children at https://elizabeth town-pa.bible2school.com/. There is no cost to families and schools, as Bible2School is funded entirely through donations and implemented by trained volunteers.

Mill Road students are transported to DOVE Elizabethtown for Bible2School programming, while East High Street students walk to the nearby Emmanuel Baptist Church. Organizers hope to expand and offer the program at more grade levels and schools in the Elizabethtown Area School District in the future, but additional volunteers and finances are needed to make that a reality.

Individuals who are interested in applying to volunteer with Bible2School - Elizabethtown may contact director Trish Morris at 717-405-8258 or Heistand at 717492-6234. Bible2School representatives are also available to speak at churches or businesses that may be interested in learning more about the organization. Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health are interested in learning how people understand and perceive the use of their personal data for research. Personal data include birthdate, genetic information, and health status that can come from sources including medical records, social media, online

databases, and insurance claims.

Participants are sought to attend a focus group and group discussion that will last between 75 and 90 minutes.

These discussions will be held at the Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Health clinics, or local libraries.

To participate, individuals must be age 18 or older, speak

and read English, and be willing to be audio recorded and to speak in a group setting. The study does not involve medical treatments or interventions.

Meetings take place once a week during the school day, over lunch and recess so that students are not missing classroom time, explained Bible2School volunteer Daryl Heistand. “It fits into the schedule really well, and we take care of all the details,” said Heistand in describing the volunteer-run program.

The students bring lunches along to eat together, and each week a Bible lesson is taught using a variety of music, skits, and science experiments. Later, everyone splits into smaller groups for a time of discussion led by an adult volunteer, a craft or activity, and prayer.

“I really appreciate watching the friendships they build and seeing the kids pray for each other,” Heistand remarked.

One of the most popular lessons is the Old Testament story of Jonah, thanks in part to the unique way that Bible2School volunteers have found to really bring it to life.

Volunteers constructed a 25-foot replica of a whale that is brought in each year for students to sit inside as they listen to the details of Jonah’s story.

Donegal To Host Veterans Day Program

On Monday, Nov. 12, area veterans are invited to attend the annual Veterans Day program at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. A reception for veterans will begin at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria, followed by a program for veterans and the entire DHS student body, faculty, and staff in the auditorium at 10 a.m.

Veterans who plan to attend are asked to sign up by Friday, Nov. 9, by contacting Tina Maag at 717-492-1202 or tina.maag@donegalsd.org.

The program will include elements such as a presentation by several local veterans. As is tradition, members of the DHS chorus will perform “In Flanders Fields” and “America the Beautiful.”

DHS principal John Felix said that the

school has held a Veterans Day program since he began working in the Donegal School District in 1979. By the 1990s, the program had been reduced to a brief talk on the school announcements. After the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, occurred, teacher Pat Enos spoke with Felix about the need to restore the Veterans Day program to its original allschool assembly format.

Paul Reese of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster will open the event with a 30-minute organ recital. A traditional Anglican-style Choral Evensong service will follow, featuring the choir of the Lancaster church and guest conductor Dr. Allen Howell.

by Louis Vierne, including three movements from the composer’s first Organ Symphony that close with a toccata movement. Vierne was the organist at the NotreDame de Paris cathedral. Reese will play on St. John’s two-manual pipe organ, which was slightly enlarged and equipped with a new console earlier this year.

Additionally, the display pipes around the organ case were restenciled to appear as they originally did in 1907, when the organ was new. William Messick of

Quarryville re-stenciled the pipes as his Eagle Scout project.

The Choral Evensong service will include the historical liturgy of evening prayer. The choir will sing choral settings of the Bible passages for this service, commonly known as the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis, set to music by Charles Wood. The choir will also perform selections from the book of Psalms sung in traditional Anglican chant and an anthem set by Robert Hobby with the traditional French

melody for the text “O What Their Joy and Their Glory Must Be.” The Rev. Gina Bautista, rector at St. John’s in Marietta, and the Rev. Glenn Miller, interim rector at St. John’s in Lancaster, will each read one of the scripture lessons for the service. A freewill offering will be received to benefit relief work in South Carolina following Hurricane Florence.

“There’s a lot to like about this show, especially all of the eccentric friends that Whiteside invites over,” said Gavin. “There are a lot of good characters for people to latch on to.”

Chautauqua Acquires Land Tract The Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna, recently acquired more than 18 acres of the historic privately held Soldiers Field. The purchase was completed primarily with funds that were donated to the community capital campaign. Saving Soldiers Field Committee cochairs John Feather and Mike Sherman announced that the committee raised more than $850,000 in pledges to be paid

over three years toward a nearly $1 million purchase price. Nearly all of the more than $680,033 in first-year pledges has been received by the committee.

The unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua board of

managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation.

In July, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land to benefit the Mount Gretna community. The purchase will benefit the community by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities such as walking/fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas, and Rails

Soldiers Field reflects part of Mount Gretna’s history. This is the site where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training from 1885 to 1935, when it moved to Fort Indiantown Gap. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Railsto-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them.

Gapstur, R.N., M.S.N., Ph.D., as the next president and chief executive officer of central Pennsylvania’s largest and only locally governed health system, effective Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019. She will succeed Dr. Kevin H. Mosser, who will retire on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

A native of Minnesota, Gapstur currently serves as president of Methodist Hospital and senior vice president of HealthPartners, a Minnesota-based

integrated health plan and care delivery organization. She also provides senior executive oversight of HealthPartners’ Hutchinson Health and, through a management services agreement, Glencoe Regional Health Services.

As a senior vice president at HealthPartners, Gapstur has played an instrumental role in supporting the growth of the organization in the western Minnesota market through a recent merger and affiliation with regional expansion of specialty care; post-acute partnerships;

operational leadership of care management strategies for highrisk populations with multiple payers, including a Next Generation accountable care organization; and one of the executive sponsors of quality improvement across six hospitals.

Five Elizabethtown Area Middle School (EAMS) students were recently recognized as Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC) Do the Right Thing winners for the month of September.

Winners are seventh-grader Seth Levenduski and eighthgraders Lauren Hoffman, Stefania Pistone, Yaneiris Cintron, and Rebeca Wynn. The students were all nominated for showing kindness to and standing up for fellow classmates. They are the first winners of the 2018-19 school year.

After another summer of Stories on the Porch, Rock Ford Plantation has announced its new Stories in the Barn programs. Stories in the Barn will be held in the historic bank barn on the grounds of Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Children will hear a story related to early America and then participate in an activity.

The first Stories in the Barn program, geared toward preschool through elementary school-age children, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Admission is by donation.
