On a sunny afternoon in April 2010, Betsy Shank was mowing the grass in front of her home in Millersville. After seeing what initially appeared to be a dead baby squirrel, Shank cut the engine and rushed to take a closer look. The little kit was still alive, so Shank raced to her computer and searched for advice on how to best help the animal.
Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on Betsy Shank (left), David Aichele and Acorn Acres the animals it serves. Music is a series of sounds, n o te s , b e at s a n d r hy t h m s arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “The music uses ornamentation and rhythms that are very distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians learning Celtic music, especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also supports the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. After all, what’s dancing without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds together to learn and enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get experience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from Lancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, flutes and a double bass. See Ceili Band pg 8

facility, Shank and a team of volunteers provide medical stabilization, nutrition and housing for injured animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs to help them recover and return to the wild with minimal human imprinting. After severe storms and a tornado tore through Lancaster County in August, local residents began sifting through debris to find the extent of the damage and clean up their yards. Many people discovered they weren’t the only ones affected by the destructive weather; hundreds of animals were left injured or displaced in the storm’s wake, including mothers that left behind nests of their young. Within a few days, the lobby of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation was packed with leaf-covered locals who halted their storm cleanup to bring baby rabbits, squirrels and mice in need of care. Although the rehabilitation facility had just closed its

intake office, Shank contacted Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven as soon as she heard a major storm was about to hit the county. “I said ‘Hey, I’m closed, but trees and houses are going to come down. People aren’t going to drive over an hour to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabilized, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm. Assisted by a team of volunteers, Shank and her husband, David Aichele, stabilized as many of the animals as they could before transferring them to Red Creek Wildlife Center. Any of the rescues still in need of medical attention remained at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation to recover. “People were in the middle of cleaning up what

happened to their homes, but they were compassionate enough to prioritize helping these baby animals. It was just amazing,” said Aichele, Shank’s righthand man and steadfast supporter who’s helped with everything from construction projects to emergency rescues since she founded Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in 2021. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation moved to its current location in November 2024, an expansion that greatly increased the organization’s capacity for rescued animals and the specialized equipment necessary to care for them. Although a major fundraising campaign made the expansion possible, Shank continues to rely on community support to cover the rehabilitation center’s expenses, as well as help from volunteer staff members. In September, Acorn Acres Rehabilitation Center launched Second Chance
Circle, a community of monthly donors who can contribute any amount to support the organization. “It’s a whole lot of people giving a little bit that are going to make a whole lot of second chances possible,” said Shank. “Every donation helps us give another animal a second chance.” In addition to joining Second Chance Circle, community members who wish to support Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation may become volunteers to assist with various aspects of the operation. “People can help with animal care or other things that are crazy important for us but don’t require contact with the animals,” said Shank. To learn more about Second Chance Circle or volunteer opportunities at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, visit https:// acornacreswr.com or stop by the facility ’s annual open house on Friday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.
Sponsors Sought for Breakfast The Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 of the Free and Accepted Masons is looking for sponsors for its holiday breakfast. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the Brossman Ballroom at the Freemasons Cultural Center, located on Freemason Drive on the campus of Masonic Village. Proceeds will go toward helping the Northwest
Regional Police Department add a second K-9 and handler, as well as a vehicle, to its K-9 program. As of late August, Lodge No. 682 needed $30,000 more to meet its $120,000 fundraising goal for the project. To become a sponsor, contact Jim Miller, holiday breakfast coordinator, at 910-742-2010 or Johnny Keplinger, worshipful master, at 717-951-8011.

It’s time for local pups to put their best paw forward. Dog Park Mount Joy’s Howloween Canine Costume Parade and Festival will bring costumed canines and their people together on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Rapho Township Communi t y Park , 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. Registration will beging at 9 a.m., followed by the parade at 10 a.m. and the announcement of winners and distribution of prizes at 10:45 a.m. Registration will take place at the concession stand, and dogs will parade around the park’s small loop. “This is a great way to introduce Fido to this year’s costume before the big night arrives for Trick or Treat,” said Lynn McCleary, president and co-founder of Dog Park Mount Joy. “He’ll associate the now-familiar costume with meeting new and interesting friends who were also forced to dress up, which makes tolerating it a bit easier. Think of the memories you can make with groups of friends, families or neighbors. Just make time to get creative and have some fun.” A Dog-Stuff Yard Sale will keep attendees busy while they wait for the parade to start, as will a merchandise table. “ There will be music, possibly from a surprise professional DJ, and rock painting,” McCleary shared. “Judges will check out the costumes as everyone mingles and the parade starts. There will be three winners in the Single category, and three winners in the Group category.” The festival will highlight Dog Park Mount Joy’s 10th anniversary, and entry into the parade is free. “The festival’s purpose is to show appreciation for the community that came together for the love of dogs 10 years ago and remains today,” McCleary remarked. “ We hope to draw new members by showing the beautiful park we have to offer and the friendships waiting to be made. We are grateful for the hundreds of dogs who have come and gone, always leaving sunbursts of joy in our hearts.” She noted that Dog Park Mount Joy has become a

favorite destination for dogs and the people who love them. “Here, lucky dogs run free with friends 365 days a year, sunrise to sunset. Set in beautiful Rapho Community Park, this members-only park offers three acres of open, grassy space flanked by magnolia trees, rosebushes and a lush, fragrant rain garden,” she said. “It includes separate areas for large and small dogs, plus fresh water, shade and ample seating so pups and people can exercise, socialize and show off their personalities together.” Members are welcome from across L ancaster County and beyond. “To keep it healthy for all, membership requires a signed liability waiver, current vaccination records, verification of homeowners’ or renters’ insurance and annual dues,” McCleary said. O n t h e p a r k ’s 1 0 t h anniversary, Sunday, Nov. 1, both members and nonmembers are invited to honor their current pups, along with those who have earned their angel wings, at a candlelight vigil. It will take place at sunset at 5 p.m. “November first happens to be All Saints’ Day,”
Mc C l e a r y s a i d , “q u i te appropriate for so many saintly pups and the spirits of unconditional love they leave with us forever.” Dog owners will come together across the fence in the middle of the park, she said. “Bring a battery-operated candle and a photo of your pups. Think about leaving Fido at home with a tasty bone, as this will be a time for humans to reflect on the magnificent gift of animals, especially our pets,” McCleary said. “If Fido does come with you, bring a flashlight to avoid missed messes and to prevent falls.” As the dog park moves into its second decade of operation, McCleary said the mission of the place remains steady, adding, “We plan to continue providing a place where dogs can shed their anxieties, grow in confidence and make friends they look forward to seeing each day.” Dog Park Mount Joy will accept gently used dog items for the yard sale. Donors may call Mary at 717-2017803 or bring their items at 8 a.m. on Oct. 24. For more information on Dog Park Mount Joy, visit htt ps://do g parkmount joy.com.

Cure from pg 1 February, and a chicken barbecue is held in April. New Jersey blueberries are sold in June, and the team will host a holiday bake sale in December. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 21 and 22, at the Masonic Village Health Care Center reception area. “Everything is donated for the bake sale, except this year we’re partnering with Nothing Bundt Cakes,” George said. “We’re getting 100 bundt cakes to sell.” Kathy noted that George was able to garner donations to cover the costs of the cakes, so everything sold at the bake sale will be profit for the team. Kathy joined the walk team this year, but she has a long history of fundraising, including participating in the March of Dimes walk. “My grandmother and my mom both had dementia,” she said. “One of my best friends was on the Alzheimer’s team, and last year she passed away unexpectedly. I felt I should take her place on the team.” Both George and Kathy firmly believe a cure for Alzheimer’s is in sight. As a retired pharmacist,
Kathy witnessed firsthand how medications could abate some of the symptoms of the disease. “Now they’re getting to the point of early diagnosis and blood tests, and they’re still talking about a vaccine,” she said, noting that extensive research, including research empowered by AI, is leading to a cure. George said that the cost of yearly care for Alzheimer’s patients in Elizabethtown exceeds $14 million, but he’s confident every donation to the cause counts. “We’re looking for that magic dollar,” he said. “We’re looking for the dollar that opens the cure.” George is humble about being the top fundraiser, emphasizing that he cares more about the money raised and how it will help the cause than being honored for his efforts. “I’ve lived in Elizabethtown for 26 years, and I know how generous the people are here, not only in the village but in the town,” he said. “Alzheimer’s is not isolated. Everybody knows somebody who’s been touched by it. … We know that Alzheimer’s is not stopping, but we aren’t either.”

The Ceili Band was formed about five years a g o , a ro u n d t h e s a m e time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Pe t r i S c h o o l o f I r i s h Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a g ro u p p ra c t i ce w i t h s o m e o f my s t u d e n t s , along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”
