Pedaling Toward Personal Growth Students who participated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut nor th to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes

One of the trips had an 84-mile day in it.” W hile the boys navigated a climb up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y., the girls had to navigate traffic in Boston. “Each trip had its unique physical challenges,” Lee said. “ T here ’s also the mental challenge of staying focused, staying safe, not quitting and bringing a good attitude each day.” Riders ranged in age from 14 to 18, and Lee emphasized that they received much more out of the experience that just exercise. “ There’s the physical challenge of the rides, but there’s also the friendship that happens along the way,” he said. “There’s also the development of leadership, teamwork and other skills, as well as spiritual growth during the devotionals held each night. They get into some deep conversations.”

To train for the Challenge Rides, the students begin riding in April for upward of 90 minutes a ride. On Saturdays, they ride for three to five hours. “By the time they get to the end of July and head out on the trips, they’re physically ready to do it,” Lee said. “ They do well on the Challenge Rides. The self-confidence they develop along the way really changes them. T hey ’re different people when they come home.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, founde d L ife c ycles 12 years ago. They wanted to provide opportunities for young people to take bike rides while also growing in faith and fellowship. Since its inception, the program has served 549 boys and girls in Lancaster and York counties, who have ridden more than 600,000 miles. “That’s the distance to
the moon and back and halfway to the moon again,” Lee said. F ro m A p r i l t h ro u g h mid-October, groups set out from locations throughout the county on weekday and Saturday rides. Lee explained that Lifecycles is for anyone who wants to try it. “They don’t have to make the team. If they show up, they’re on the team,” he said. “There’s no cost for anything. Everything is 100% free.” Participants can receive all the gear they need, and each ride includes a free hot meal. Participants are taught to r ide safely in small groups, progressing at a pace that ser ves them, Lee said, and ride groups are s e parate d by b oy s and g irls as well as by strengths and abilities. “It’s an opportunity for youths to get out in the fresh air, make new friends
and be supervised in a positive and encouraging environment,” he said. “They develop their skills at their own pace.” No experience with biking is required to join Lifecycles. “ We’ve taught kids to ride,” Lee said. “We have everyone from beginners to experts in our groups.” He encourages parents to consider signing their child up for the next season of Lifecycles, which will begin in the third week in April next year. “A person doesn’t have to belong to a church, doesn’t have to come in with a relationship with Jesus, but they are going to hear about it,” Lee said. “If you want your child to have this outdoor adventure experience with a faith-based core, that’s what we do.” To learn more about Lifecycles, visit www.lifecycles team.org.

Library from pg 1 fund, and it’s up to whomever is making the budget decisions for that year to determine what amount of money libraries are going to get.” Without regulation, financial support varies widely, with some municipalities providing extensive funds and others giving nothing, she said. “For some of us, like the Elizabethtown Librar y, we’re raising and generating about 60% of our operations each year,” Drur y said, noting that funds are raised through donation drives, book sales and special events, such as the Taste of Western Lancaster County. “We can raise and generate funds through fines and fees as well, but the percentage of effort required to raise the dollars we need is impossible to sustain.” And, she added, “Any of our funding sources outside of our own can be taken away without notice. To try to provide consistent service with incredibly unstable funding is impossible. Having a dedicated library tax is good for Lancaster County because it gives us stability in funding and the capacity to plan for more than one year at a time.” The library provides much more than books. Patrons can access the Internet, use computers, check out movies, borrow everything from musical instruments to unique cake pans and participate in programs ranging from story time to financial literacy workshops. Even people who don’t use the library can benefit from
its existence, Drury added. “Research shows that having strong public libraries in your community increases the resale value of your home, decreases violent behavior in the community, helps with public safety and increases k i n d e r g a r t e n t h ro u g h 12th-grade education scores,” she said. “ The statistics of having wellfunded public libraries for communities shows that the library is a very, very good thing for Lancaster C o u n t y. W h e n p e o p l e invest their dollars in the library, the return to the community is exponential.” She emphasized that most of the municipalities surrounding Lancaster County have a library tax already in place, and it’s been a goal of Lancaster’s system for many years. “This is a tax, yes, but it’s a tax that will pay you back because when you invest in library services, you’re not only investing in your community and the value of your community, but you’re also investing in your own household,” she said. “By paying a library tax, you’re helping people have access to even more library services, expanding hours at locations and allowing for shorter wait times for items and a broader collection.” Opposition to the library tax has come from both sides of the political aisle, with opponents worried that countians don’t need another tax. “I support public libraries and believe they provide essential services in our
community,” said Sen. James Malone, whose district includes parts of Lancaster County. “However, two of the most frequent concerns I hear about from my constituents are that the cost of housing and property taxes are too high. For this reason, I cannot support a plan that would raise property taxes on Lancaster County residents.” Elizabethtown Library assistant Brandon Allen said asking libraries to operate like other nonprofits and raise their own funds does a disservice to the wider community. “Public services should be funded with public money,” he said. “What we do is completely open to anyone; no matter what you think, what you believe, where you come from, our doors are open. We’re here to serve and help everyone, and the more we serve and do for the community, the more it costs us.” Drury emphasized that the library also does not want to compete with other nonprofits in the county. “ We d o n ’ t w a n t t o take away funding from anyone. We want to offer the community a sustainable system that provides community resources,” she said. “We want the library to continue to be a place of discovery for everyone. In today’s world, we need a place where ever yone belongs, and that is what the public library is.” To learn more about the proposed library tax, v i s i t h t t p s: / / vo te ye s 4 libraries.org.
