ANDREW J.HOMICK

Andrew J. Homick, 37, of Elizabethtown, PA, was peacefully received into heaven by God on Monday morning, September 27, 2021 at ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation (formerly ManorCare) in Lancaster following a lengthy illness. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Paul D. and Lynn Smith Homick of Elizabethtown. Andy attended Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church his entire lifetime, and was a volunteer at Cornerstone Ministries in Elizabethtown for several years. He was a 2002 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Many will remember Andy with his outgoing personality, working as a produce assistant at the former Darrenkamp’s Market in Elizabethtown where he was employed for over five years. Others will recall him as a culinary assistant at Masonic Village. In his spare time, he mastered all video game systems from Nintendo Gameboy to PlayStation. He enjoyed tinkering around with all sorts of gadgets, and supporting the Philadelphia Eagles. It was while he was working at Darrenkamp’s, Andy accepted an offer to join a coworker to go for a run. Following that positive experience, Andy developed an insatiable passion for running. He competed in 5K races in Lancaster, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. He was also driven to compete in half marathons in both Philadelphia and Hershey. It was physically and emotionally difficult for Andy when his health prevented him from running any longer. Andy was an amazing young man who will be missed greatly by many. He will be remembered as a loving son, a devoted brother, a fun-loving uncle and nephew, and great friend. He was positive and determined, with a wonderful sense of humor. Andy enjoyed making people smile. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Emily A., wife of Adam Greiner, of Elizabethtown and their children Abriella and Carson. Also surviving is an uncle, Mark, husband of Connie Myers, of Bainbridge, and an aunt, Patti Uhrich of Hershey; and two cousins, Abbey Campbell and Courtney Myers.

ACelebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday afternoon, October 16, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown, PA. There will be no public viewing. The family will greet guests during a time of light refreshments at the church immediately following the service. In light of the pandemic, honor Andy and his family by wearing a mask. In lieu of flowers, if desired, contributions may be made in his memory to Cornerstone Community Ministries, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, PA17022. To express a condolence with the family or to watch a livestream of the service, visit www.spencefuneralservices.com

Comfort Food For A Cause

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Hearts will be warmed by fellowship and tummies will be warmed by comfort food when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds a potpie dinner. The dinner will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. Dinner will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out.

“It’s going to be a sit-down dinner in our fellowship hall,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a coordinator of the church’s Mission Outreach Team. “We will also have meals available to go if people want to do that, or they can purchase potpie in quart containers to take home.”

Along with potpie, the meal will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a homemade dessert and a beverage. There are separate

prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.

Proceeds from the dinner will support a mission trip that church members will take in June of 2022. “We are still planning the destination,” Ruhl noted, adding that they are looking for destinations that may need extra volunteers due to devastation from extreme weather events. “We’re definitely going. We’re just not sure where yet.”

Ruhl and her husband have been the coordinators of the Mission Outreach Team for 13 years. Over the years, they have taken multigenerational groups throughout much of the United States. “We’ve gone as far out as Oklahoma, and the farthest south we’ve gone is Lumberton, North Carolina,” she remarked. “We’ve been to Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland.” The group was unable to take a trip in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic.

Ruhl said the potpie dinner provides the church not only with an opportunity to serve good food, but also with the chance to connect with the community.

“We make really great potpie,” she stated. “Just come and enjoy the food, visit with friends and family, socialize and enjoy the fellowship. You can talk to people at our church about the church or inquire about our mission trips. It’s a very family-oriented dinner. We love when families come and bring their kiddos. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere.”

For more information on the dinner, visit https://ruhlschurch .org or call the church at 717665-3400. Ruhl noted that any changes or updates determined by changing CDC guidelines will be posted on the website.

Over the years, Columbia has experienced its fair share of tragedy. There was the burning of the Columbia Opera House, deaths on Wright’s Ferry, a deadly trolley crash and the famous burning of the ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge. Rivertown Theatre Productions will bring this spooky history to life during Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour. Tours will be given every half-hour between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 15, 16, 22 and 23, as well as every half-hour between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. Tours will leave from the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St.

The tour is billed as “theater in the street,” and it features a cast of about 25 costumed characters. This year’s theme is “Unfortunate Events.”

“One of the stops will be the dungeons below the Columbia Market House,” said Rebecca Wright, who co-owns Rivertown Theatre Productions with Sara Mimnall. While the market has been beautifully renovated, the dungeons have not been touched since they were used to house inmates many years ago. “They are historically accurate, right down to the chains used to hold prisoners,” Wright noted, adding that they make the perfect creepy setting for a tour stop.

Additional stops will include the old Becker’s Chip Factory, as well as Art Printing Company, located in the historic Miller Mansion, where Rivertown Theatre Productions has its home base.

“The Becker’s Chip Factory is a brand-new, never-before-seen stop on our tour,” Wright noted, adding that it will be transformed into Black’s Hotel for the event. Tourgoers will also be able to ride the Rivertowne Trolley for part of the tour.

This is the fifth year for the Haunted Lantern Tour, and Mimnall said it’s a unique event. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we talk as if the events are happening here and now,” she explained. “Our actors are portraying that person during the event. We want to make people feel as if they are there in the story.”

Proceeds from the tour will benefit local organizations, including the upkeep of the Miller Mansion.

Wright and Mimnall said they hope attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of Columbia’s rich past. “The tour is equally historical and theatrical,” Mimnall explained. “It’s mostly on the historical side, with some subtle jump scares, but nothing too scary.”

Reservations are recommended for the tour, although walk-ins will be accepted if space allows. To reserve tickets, call Holly at 717-587-5368.

Community members may search for their local gift economy group at www.buy nothingproject.org.

The United East Board of Athletic Directors also welcomed Penn State Harrisburg’s Rahsaan Carlton as the new chair after Carlton spent the past two years as vice chair. Carlton stepped in for former LBC athletic director Pete Beers, who transitioned to the role of interim vice president for traditional undergraduate education at the college.

The United East includes nine NCAA Division III member institutions: Gallaudet University, Lancaster Bible College, State University of New York at Morrisville, Penn College, Penn State Abington, Penn State Berks, Penn State Harrisburg, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Wells College. The United East also includes three associate members in men’s golf, namely Rosemont College, Rutgers University - Camden and Wilson College. It has partnered with the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in men’s and women’s lacrosse and the North Atlantic Conference in men’s and women’s tennis.
