When Haldeman
Mansion hosts its annual Fall Festival, the event serves a purpose beyond providing an entertaining day out for families.
“Restoration of the mansion has been ongoing for over 50 years,” said Kenneth P. Beard, president of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. “This event helps enable the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society to celebrate the significant history of the site and fund upkeep of the building and grounds.”
The 19th annual Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge.
Activities will take place on the
grounds of the historic site as well as inside the building, which was constructed in the late 1700s and was the home of Samuel Haldeman, a renowned 19th-century naturalist.
A variety of entertainment will be featured at the festival, including live music from South Mountain
Bluegrass and interactive insect discovery with Dean Evans, who is known as “The Cicada Chaser.”
Maggie the Cockatoo will be on-site, and several children’s activities will be offered. Food and drink options will include Groff’s bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, chicken corn soup,

There are so many great causes in Lancaster County. Locally, there are so many life-affirming nonprofits performing life-altering work.
The only thing greater is the generosity of Lancaster County residents.
Faithful Give seeks to link those donors and causes and to enhance that great work.
“Lancaster County has got to be one of the most generous counties in the nation,” said Dave Kieffer, president of Faithful Give. “I feel like it gives God glory to highlight every way that Lancaster County needs to be served. There are a lot of people here carrying out Jesus’ ministry. It’s about giving your money, but it’s also about giving your time, treasures and talents. Our goal is to connect the donors and the need.”

Since May, the Elizabethtown Farmers Market has provided fresh produce, local goods and other seasonal items to shoppers who visit the site on twice a month on Wednesdays. As the market prepares to wrap up the season, you’re invited to a Harvest Festival.

ticularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body.
it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, par -
Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.
Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.
and advocate for faithbased, biblically faithful organizations in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “We’re not designed to compete; we’re focused on Faithful Give and what we do. Healthy competition can improve the outcome for all organizations. Generosity begets generosity.”
Faithful Give is also sponsoring two in-person events as part of this year’s initiative.
The first is a kickoff prayer breakfast that will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Leaders and representatives of some of the charitable causes will be present to meet donors and answer questions.
Faithful Give will informally conclude its efforts with a community celebration event and expo on Oct. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata. That family-friendly gathering will feature bounce houses, a strolling magician, balloon animals, face painting,
nine holes of miniature golf and fellowship.
“One hundred percent of your money goes straight to where you designate it,” said Kieffer. “We encourage people to give to nonprofits throughout the year. Lancaster County people steward their money well. We’re really trying to expand our definition of generosity. The organizations I get behind most are the ones who have won my heart. It helps me to buy into their mission.”
Faithful Give, which does not maintain a physical office, is aiming to raise a total of $2 million for 130 Lancaster County causes like Christian schools, youth and college programs, adult programs, elderly care, human services and overseas organizations headquartered locally. Last year, Faithful Give raised more than $1.568 million from 2,933 donors.
“There are probably a thousand great causes in Lancaster County doing great work,” said Kieffer. “Faithful Give is designed to come alongside nonprofits with a Christian vision

The event will also include a lecture at 2 p.m. about Billmeyer, a now-defunct quarry operation and nearby ghost town.
“The lecture is an opportunity to hear the story behind the White Cliffs of Conoy and quarry operation that created it as well as the village - including a store and church - that formerly housed employees,” said Beard.

2023, Faithful Give has raised more than $2.3 mil lion for local nonprofits.
“I think Lancaster County has a rich heritage of biblically led, faithful-led nonprofits,” said Kieffer.
“Faithful Give exists to celebrate and nurture that and protect that mission for the future. Since it was started, it’s grown in number and in quality. It’s also grown in reputation. provide opportunities for people to learn more about the site’s history.
“The mansion is a 18th-century National Register historic site located within a National Register-listed archaeological district,” Beard said. “It sits on a Susquehanna River terrace which provides a view today and was home to documented Native American settlements dating to the 1500s and early 1700s.”
People are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to spend the afternoon at the festival. To learn more about the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society, visit www.haldeman -mansion.org.

up the bountiful harvest of the season each year to celebrate and connect
said Nikita Grove, co-founder and vice president of Elizabethtown Farmers Market.
“This is a free event that is focused on family fun, connection with our local businesses, farmers and producers - a great way to support local while also engaging in the seasonal offerings by our vendors.”
The festival will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the market site in the parking lot of Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.
The festival will feature both seasonal and pop-up vendors, focused on producers only, Grove said, explaining that means all goods will be made or produced by the vendors.
Along with shopping opportunities, the festival will include mini Highland cow petting and a photo booth, free face painting, free pumpkin decorating and a coloring station, free apple cider and live music.
Local food trucks, including Hitch Coffee and Funcky Candy X-Press, will have food and drinks for purchase, and a variety of local nonprofits will host tables to provide information about their services.
This is the second annual Harvest Festival, and the event is sponsored by Heeler’s Construction Services.
The Elizabethtown Farmers Market began in 2024 when Grove, Madison Snyder and Cecile Madonna came together to create the nonprofit. They envisioned the market as a gathering space for community members to come together to share information and ideas while also taking advantage of the abundant produce grown locally. Since its founding, the market has continued to thrive, Grove said.
“We’ve grown our vendor selection and variety of goods such as a local mushroom vendor, sourdough, empanadas and ice cream,” she stated. “Plus the expansion of locally harvested produce and live music at every farmers market!”
Although the Harvest Festival will mark the final market date of the 2025 season, the farmers market will return next year, Grove said, operating twice a month from May through mid-October.
The Harvest Festival is free to attend, and no tickets are required. Parking is available in a large lot at the church. For more information, search for “Elizabethtown Farmer’s Market” on Facebook or visit https://bit.ly/ EtownFarmersMarket.
Participants in last year’s event included (from left) Police Chief Mark Mayberry from the Northwest Police Department and Lt. Jeff Sosnoski, Officer Phil Groff and Police Chief Rob Goshen from the Mount Joy Police Department.
Etown Grace Church, 305 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown, will host its sixth annual Community Faith and Blue event on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is an opportunity for community members to connect personally with local police departments and first responders.
The police chiefs and officers from Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Borough, Northwest Regional and Susquehanna Regional will be present. Members of the Rheems Fire Department will be on hand, as well as the Municipal Emergency Services Authority of Lancaster County (MESA) EMTs.
A question-and-answer time with the police chiefs from each department will begin at 12:30 p.m. Hot dogs, cookies, drinks and children’s activities will be available. Children will have the opportunity to interact with the police and have a picture taken with an officer.
This event is part of the national Faith and Blue Weekend, an initiative of MovementForward and One Congregation One Precinct Initiative. The initiative’s goal is
to build bridges and break down biases through activities and outreaches between law enforcement professionals and the communities they serve, including the faith community. Everyone is invited.
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Attendees will enjoy devotions, music, brunch and fellowship.
This will be the group’s 38th year. The theme for the year is “Grow in the Lord,” with a goal of growing in
a relationship with Jesus through Scripture, prayer, meditation and worship.
New members are welcome. During the program, classes are provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, will present a sacred music concert by Partners in Rhyme featuring Angle Gruber and Sandy Heisey. Church members will also perform.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit those affected by the flood in Texas. Light refreshments will be served following the concert.
Attendees are encouraged to wear western attire.
