Pick up a chicken dinner and you’ll be supporting a church that has served Elizabethtown for well over a century. Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church, 777 S. Mount Joy St. The meal will be available for takeout only, by donation, with no prepurchased tickets necessary. The meal will include a half chicken from Peters’ BBQ , a baked potato, homemade baked beans, homemade pepper slaw, applesauce, a roll and homemade cookies. The meal can be picked up by driving up to the portico; runners will bring the meals to the cars, along with a donation basket. “The proceeds from this event will benefit our 125-year anniversary in 2027,” said Sandy Brubaker, a member of the witness commission and the 125th anniversary committee. “The anniversary is in May of 2027, with the celebration having several upcoming events throughout next year for the community to attend featuring special speakers and music groups.” Members of the congregation will have opportunities throughout 2027 to go on educational bus trips, attend a workshop and enjoy a Sunday picnic and a banquet to culminate the anniversary next fall, she added. “There will possibly be a service project as well,” Brubaker said. “The theme of the anniversary celebration is ‘Living the Love of God.’”

She noted that the church has held a chicken barbecue for many years. “(It) has grown over the last few years with many people waiting in line to pick up this delicious meal,” she said. “People seem to enjoy the homemade items. The chicken has a wonderful reputation. The meal is easy to pick up, and it benefits many worthwhile projects.” Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren welcomes the community to its services, and the church practices peace, service and openness to all. “We have faith formation classes for all ages - children, (youths) and adults - from 9:15 to 10:15 every Sunday morning,” Brubaker shared. “There are three adult classes, one exploring the Bible; special speakers invited to share on different topics; and a class that has conversation about the morning Scripture and theme for worship.” She noted that the Sunday service, which begins at 10:30 a.m., always features food for thought. “Our pastors and worship teams

Visitors will also get to explore history up close through mansion tours, which will be held at 1 and 2:30 p.m. “The event is an opportunity to spend an afternoon enjoying a beautiful setting for history, music, food and family fun while supporting the restoration of a historic treasure,” said Kenneth Beard, president of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. Proceeds will be used for restoration of the mansion. Work on the site has been ongoing for more than 50 years, Beard said. “This event helps enable the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (to) celebrate the significant history of the site and fund upkeep of the building and grounds,” he said, adding that a small donation is requested for

festival parking to help with restoration costs as well. “In conjunction with the festival, the historical Bainbridge blacksmith shop will be open on Second Street to provide more historical interpretation and working demonstrations.” The Haldeman Mansion is an 18th-century National Register historic site located within a National Register-listed archaeological district, he noted. “It sits on a Susquehanna River terrace, which provides a beautiful view today and was home to two documented native American settlements dating to the 1500s and early 1700s,” he explained. “It also was the birthplace of esteemed scientist Samuel S. Haldeman.” People are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to spend the afternoon at the festival. D e p e n d i n g o n s t u d e nt s’ post-high school goals, Edwards may meet with them weekly or monthly. “Many times, the community partners will hire students for an after-school job,” she said. The work is as varied as the community partners. “We volunteer with the library or local churches. done some cleaning jobs, shelved books, served food at local schools, learned to cook and bake, organized work areas, boxed products ... and there are so many more skills coming this year.” Edwards emphasized that community support of the program is essential for its success. “We are always looking for a variety of ways for the community to help with initiatives, including building task boxes,” she remarked. “We are always looking for local community partners for field trips, guest speakers and new places to help students experience their community.” She noted that the program provides benefits for both the students and the organizations where they work. “It’s a rewarding program for the students and the business partners to be able to teach and watch students build confidence and flourish in positions that they are passionate about,” she said. “After working with students and myself to get to know the ins and outs, we very quickly become an asset to help our local community thrive.” She added that involving students in experiences outside of the school is another way to help determine a teen’s future. “We, as a community, want to welcome our students with open arms,” she said. “Many of them will need to be integrated in the community whether they decide on college, CTC, trades or just need a purpose and goal for the coming years after high school.” To learn more about the program, including providing opportunities for student work, contact Edwards at Abigail_edwards@ etownschools.org.
