EAHS Will Celebrate Homecoming BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ixteen students have been named to the homecoming court at Elizabethtown Area High School. The school will celebrate homecoming with a football game against Conestoga Valley High School at the White Family Dental Stadium at Thompson Field on Friday, Oct. 2, followed by a dance on Saturday, Oct. 3, on the turf field. The candidates for queen are Kendall Davies, Allison Evans, Ashley Geesey, Jessica Gilbert, Autumn NyeSmith, Alyssa Olson, Ainsley Raybold and Julia Sikora. The candidates for king are Vincent Checco, Mitchell Garber, Patrick Gilhool, Tristan Lentz, Trent McBride, Bryan Murray, Wyatt Nicholas Rachael and Cohen Weaver. Kendall is the daughter of Mike and Fawn Davies of Elizabethtown. She is captain of the varsity soccer team and plays varsity lacrosse. She participates with Mini-THON and is a member of the National Honor Society (NHS). She plans to attend college to become a nurse. Kendall will be escorted by Tristan Lentz. He is the son of Glen and Heather Lentz of Elizabethtown. He is a member of Student Council and the boys’ volleyball team. He is also a section leader for the marching band and participates in the theater program. He plans to attend college to major in business. Allison is the daughter of Andy and Jodie Evans of Elizabethtown. She is vice president of the Class of 2022, senior captain and Section 2 All Star of the girls’ tennis team and a member of the bowling and track and field teams. She plays flute in the concert and marching bands as well as the orchestra, where she is section leader. She is a member of the newspaper club, Roots and

After graduation, she plans to major in a science-related field at college. Allison will be escorted by Trent McBride. Trent, of Elizabethtown, is the son of Adam McBride and Brenda McBride. He is captain of the boys’ tennis team and a section leader in the band. He is an Eagle Scout and a youth leader at his church. After college, he will embark on a twoyear mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and plans to attend college. Ashley, of Bainbridge, is the daughter of Gwen Geesey and Chris Geesey. She is class vice president, executive chair of Mini-THON and a member of Student Council. She

serves as a Bigs and Littles mentor and is a member of the NHS. She is also a member of the youth group at Newport Church. After graduation, she plans to go to college to pursue a medical career. Ashley will be escorted by Wyatt Nicholas Rachael. He is the son of Nick and Heather Rachael of Elizabethtown. He is a member of the soccer and swim teams and participates in Mini-THON. He plays soccer with the Hershey Soccer Club as well. After high school, he will attend and play soccer for Penn College. Jessica is the daughter of Matt and Jill Gilbert of Elizabethtown. She is a member of NHS and the girls’ soccer and lacrosse teams and serves as Mini-THON secretary. Outside of school, she plays with the Hershey Soccer Club and Lanco Elite Lacrosse Club. She plans to

attend college for pre-med. Jessica’s escort will be Mitchell Garber. He is the son of Greg and Anne Garber of Elizabethtown. He is a captain of the soccer team and a member of NHS and both the swim and baseball teams. He volunteers at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. He plans to attend college for business and to play baseball. Autumn is the daughter of Tom and Pam NyeSmith of Elizabethtown. She is a member of the girls’ volleyball team and was a captain during her junior year. She also served on the Mini-THON committee. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington to study nursing, with the goal of becoming a neonatal nurse. Autumn will be escorted by Patrick Gilhool. He is the son of Patrick and Kristin Gilhool of Elizabethtown.

Nothing says “fall” like apples, and Haldeman Mansion will put the fruit in the spotlight at the 16th annual Apple Fall Festival. The festival will be held at the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge, from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. “This is a fun day for families,” said Elaine Jackson, corresponding secretary for the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. The festivities will include plenty of activities for kids such as bobbing for apples, a coloring contest, Frisbee throwing, jumping rope and more. An extensive menu of food options will be offered, including grilled Groff ’s bratwurst, hot dogs, homemade baked beans, applesauce, mulled cider, chicken corn soup, bean soup, vegetarian apple squash soup and chips. Apple-focused desserts will include apple crisp, apple dumplings, apple pie, apple cake and more. Apples for the festival are donated by Masonic Villages. See Apple Fall Festival pg 7

Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will hold a pulled pork fundraiser. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Due to ongoing limitations and guidelines for long-term care facilities and in lieu of its annual harvest festival, pig roast and auction, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will hold a drive through, curbside pickup pulled pork fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of East Fairview Church of the Brethren, 1187 Fairview Road, Manheim. Each meal will include fire-grilled and slow-roasted pulled pork with sauce, a homemade Amish soft roll, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, applesauce and a dessert. Proceeds from the meal will benefit Mt. Hope, where director of advancement Kris Wilson said residents experience a warm and inviting atmosphere. “I quickly realized how special Mt. Hope is,” she said, of her early impressions when she came on board with the community. “Its size and home-like space naturally lend itself to a family feel.” Despite the challenges faced

this year, Mt. Hope received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the highest award given to a facility for the care it provides. Wilson noted that Mt. Hope is committed to providing care for seniors regardless of their ability to pay. The 50-bed facility provides charitable care through government assistance, but a gap exists between what is covered and what eligible residents can afford. Fundraisers such as the pulled-pork meal help fill in that gap. Mt. Hope will also participate in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19. “Every dollar has the chance to change lives at Mt. Hope,” Wilson said. Meal preorders will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 8, and saved under the name provided when ordered. Payment may be made in a drop box on site in the form of cash or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope NRC.” Extra meals will be available while supplies last.

Area ladies are invited to attend a free livestream of the Revive ’21 conference, themed “Grounded: Standing Firm in a Shaking World,” at Calvary Bible Church, 629 Union School Road, Mount Joy. Kennel Club Plans Agility Trials The Lancaster Kennel Club will present its annual agility trials on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3, indoors at In the Net, 798 Airport Road, Palmyra. Trials will start at 8 a.m. each day and continue until mid-afternoon. There are approximately 350 dogs scheduled each day to compete in two rings. Vendors and concessions will be available. Museum Sets Exhibit, Class Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, has posted its schedule. Its fall exhibit, titled “Picture Shows, the Evolution of Elizabethtown Imagery,” may be viewed from Friday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 29, during museum hours. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on opening day, Oct. 1, visitors may enjoy refreshments. The exhibit will allow viewers to explore Elizabethtown through the unfolding of photographic technology, from daguerreotypes and stereographs to glass slides and still photography. Donations will be appreciated. A stereograph class will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 30. Based on stereograph technology of the 1860s, attendees will learn to create, print, and view their own 3D photos. The cost includes a stereo viewer. CROSS COUNTRY The Elizabethtown cross country team hosted Solanco on the 21st where the Lady Bears came out on top 23-38, but the boy’s fell 24-33. Jordan DiRisio finished second for the girls while Nathan Johnson had the top boy’s finish with his fourth place run. On September 18th, the Bears took part in the Ben Bloser Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring HS. The Lady Bears finished ninth behind DiRisio’s 20th place run while the boy’s claimed 23rd in the team standings with Johnson posting the lone top-100 finish with his 79th place run.

Off the Streets Susquehanna is providing a helping hand to homeless people who are transitioning to a home of their own. “We set people up with everything they need to get started in their apartment,” explained Karen Sahd, coadministrator. Recipients are referred to Off the Streets by organizations such as Tenfold and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “These are people who have been vetted to confirm they can afford the monthly rent for an apartment,” stated Peg Beaver, co-administrator. The client secures the housing, and Off the Streets pays any initial fees required to move in, such as the first and last months’ rents or a security deposit. The money is paid directly to the landlord, and then Off the Streets volunteers get to work delivering basic household items - anything

from silverware to cleaning supplies. “Most of the items we give out are donated by the community, but we do purchase some things,” said Beaver, noting that new pillows and mattresses are among these items. Mike Sahd, treasurer of Off the Streets, oversees a group of volunteers who pick up items to bring to the storage site and who also deliver items to the new homeowners. Off the Streets Susquehanna has no paid staff, and all money for the program is raised through donations. Off the Streets began in Connecticut under the direction of Deacon Michael Oles. In 2012, Oles was assigned to St. John Neumann Parish in Lancaster, where he started a local Off the Streets program. The Columbia organization began after Oles came to a few local churches to speak about the program, and a core group of people realized that Columbia could benefit from an Off the Streets chapter. “There is a lot of need for this program in Columbia,” Mike stated, See Home pg 7

The Junior Air Rifle program is looking for participants who want to learn gun safety and marksmanship in a friendly and relaxed environment. The program will be held at the Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 9. The classes will run through Saturday, Dec. 18, and will begin at 9 a.m. “We hope (participants) have a good time, learn safe gun handling and proper respect for guns and perhaps decide to make this a longerterm activity,” said instructor Tom Amlie. “If nothing else, familiarity with shooting air rifles should take some of the mystery and fear out of the idea of guns and shooting.” As Amlie explained, air rifles propel a projectile, either a pellet or BB, by compressed air or by a spring rather than by gunpowder. “Air rifles can range from the spring-powered Daisy Red Ryder up to Olympic-quality air rifles, which use pre-compressed air and cost several thou-

sand dollars,” he stated. The program is open to any youth age 9 and older, and it begins with an extensive safety orientation for all participants, even those who have shot with the club previously. “On the first day, we shoot at larger air pistol targets, shooting off of supports,” Amlie stated. “This lets the shooters concentrate on sight picture and trigger control. The more forgiving air pistol targets also provide some better positive reinforcement on that first day.” As the course progresses, the targets become more difficult, and students may advance to unsupported shooting in a prone position. Amlie, who has been running the program for two years, said he enjoyed marksmanship activities when he was a teenager. “Air rifles … provide a safe, inexpensive, lowkey introduction to the shooting sports,” he remarked. “Some of the local high schools have air rifle programs, so this also provides a nice background in case anyone wants to get involved with their school team.” The air rifle program offers an

Since its inception, the organization has provided more than $11,000 in security deposits and has helped 43

families, including 66 adults and 35 children, get off the streets and into a home. Although the organization is based in Columbia, it has also served people in Mount Joy, Elizabethtown and Wrightsville, among other areas. It’s fitting that Bridge will participate, Jackson said, because Samuel Haldeman was a nature lover who spent a lot of time outdoors examining bugs and other creatures. “The river that’s close by was his playground,” noted Jackson, of Haldeman, who was born in the mansion in 1812. The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society works to restore the home and keep its history alive. “We want to continue to offer education programs and make this a place to learn about the history of this area,” Jackson explained. Tours of the mansion will be offered at the festival. Proceeds from the event will help with restoration projects at the mansion, and the money is especially important this year, Jackson emphasized, noting that other fundraising events the society typically holds throughout the year were canceled due to the pandemic. “This is really a community-supported event,” she said, acknowledging the local businesses and organizations that
