To Spotlight Furnace Industry

By Chelsea Peifer

Since 1976, Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown, has been impacting students in a Christ-centered, family-like atmosphere. Director of development April Miller said that enrollment is at an alltime high this school year, with more than 515 students in preschool through 12th grade. The community is invited to celebrate and support all that is happening at the school by attending the annual MCCS benefit auction, set to take place at the school on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28. The event will kick off on Sept. 27 with a barbecue dinner catered by Harvey’s Bar-B-Q from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. In addition to an eat-in option, takeout meals will be available for pickup via the school’s Hillside Avenue entrance. Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is moving into a new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, and executive

director Stacy Emminger said with a smile, “In my mind, I see us already outgrowing this place, too.” That is the kind of big vision that Emminger has for DSAA.

Participants, volunteers, and spectators are all welcome to join in the fun at the annual Falmouth Goat Races on Sept. 28 at Governor Stable Park in the village of Falmouth. By Chelsea Peifer

Last autumn, torrential rains and soggy fields caused the Falmouth Civic Assocation to cancel the Falmouth Goat Races for only the second time in nearly four decades, but this year -

Falmouth. Admission is free, with a nominal fee per vehicle for parking. Festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., and the Elizabethtown Area High School pep band will play. Goat races will begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon. Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy Putt-Hower said that as many as 60 goats race each year, with youth and senior divisions for the animal handlers. Individuals are welcome to register their goats to race for a nominal fee by filling out a form on the morning of the event. Goats will also be available to rent on the day of the race for those who would like to compete but do not own a goat. Individuals are selected from the crowd to act as judges at the finish line. In addition to the goat races, the event will feature arts and craft stands, children’s barrel train rides, and “cow patty” bingo for adults. Food and beverages, as well as goat-themed merchandise, will be available to purchase. Putt-Hower emphasized that volunteers are still needed to serve in various capacities at this

year’s event. Interested individuals may call 717-367-6801. According to Putt-Hower, when the goat races first started, they took place on the baseball field on Governor Stable Road. Today, the location is no longer simply an athletic field but a popular park that the association has been able to enhance with a pavilion, bathrooms, and a playground. The Falmouth Goat Races are a longstanding tradition that began with a joke. According to Putt-Hower, a group of oldtimers was sitting around the village store discussing life’s misfortunes and bad luck at the horse race track. Each person owned goats as family pets, and someone made a remark that they might as well bet on the goats instead. That was all it took to spark an idea for Ken Brandt, who got to work placing advertisements for a goat race in Falmouth, listing the phone number of his friend who had made the joke. Still to this day, the Falmouth Goat Races take place on the last Saturday of September, drawing crowds from across the state and beyond. Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 2014. She and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA previously operated from an approximately 400square-foot office space at 15A W. Main St., Mount Joy, and now has room to offer more programming at its new approximately 1,275-square-foot location. With the lease signed on Sept. 1 and moving well underway, Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado plan to open the doors of DSAA’s new location to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. An open house event is in the works. Details on that, as well as regular hours for the new site, will be posted at www.facebook.com/Donegal SubstanceAbuseAlliance/ and http://dsasquared.org/ once determined. DSAA currently offers support groups for family members, assistance entering into treatment, and the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) program. Beginning on

Wednesday, Oct. 9, instructor Kim Stoltzfus will offer 12-step yoga for interested individuals. “Anyone that identifies with the 12-step program is welcome,” said Emminger. The yoga sessions will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Emminger and Mercado plan to create a welcoming sober space on-site too, with social events every other Friday evening for people who are in recovery. “We’re going to be kicking off a lot of things this fall, and we’re open to other agencies and all the A’s (anonymous) groups using our space,” explained Emminger. “We basically want it to be full all the time.” Emminger’s goal is to purchase a larger space for DSAA in two years so that the organization can provide support and programming for even more individuals in the greater Mount Joy area. She is committed to serving this part of the county, noting that it can be difficult for people to get into Lancaster city where addiction resources and assistance are often more readily available. On Saturday, Oct. 26, DSAA will host its second annual Sober Spooktacular from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The public is invited to attend to learn about and support the work of DSAA. Cos-

tumes are encouraged. Dinner will be served, and Brandon Novak will be the featured guest speaker. Born in Baltimore, Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bam” and “Bam’s Unholy Union” starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and co-author Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,” a book based on Novak’s life, including his experiences with heroin in Baltimore. He now travels the country as an addiction and recovery speaker for Banyan Treatment Center in order to raise awareness and help addicts find the treatment that they need. “We want people to come and support us, but we also want people to come that maybe Brandon’s story can help to change their mind about addiction,” shared Emminger. “With Brandon you have the story of someone who was literally a millionaire and lost everything. His story is a pretty gnarly one.” To purchase tickets for the DSAA Sober Spooktacular in advance, interested individuals may email lexi.dsaa@gmail.com or call 717-492-4596. Proceeds will support the operating costs of DSAA.

Auction from pg 1 The 43rd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, known as the largest disaster relief auction in the world, will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown.

Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a Phredd concert by WJTL personality Fred McNaughton. Other activities will include a car show, a tractor show and the Run for Relief, a 5K walk/run. There will be an area for venders of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh pro-

duce and baked goods, including hundreds of pies. Handmade onsite Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza will be available. Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, will feature a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, artisan bread, specialty nuts and items from various artists. For more details about the auction, readers may visit www.brethrenauction.org, call 717-723-6863 on the day of the auction or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers. 2019-2020 School Year Programs for Eligible or Protected Handicapped Students In compliance with state and federal law, notice is hereby given by the Elizabethtown Area School District that it conducts ongoing identification activities as part of its school program for the purpose of identifying students who may be in need of special education and related services (eligible students). If your child is identified by the District as possibly in need of such services, you will be notified of the applicable procedure. Individualized services and programs are available for children who are determined to be eligible and in need of specially designed instruction due to the following condition(s): 1. Autism 2. Blindness or Visual Impairment 19 3. Deafness or Hearing Impairment 4. Developmental Delay (Early Intervention) 5. Intellectual Disability 6. Multiple Disabilities 7. Traumatic Brain Injury 8. Other Health Impairments 9. Orthopedic Impairment 10. Emotional Disturbance 11. Specific Learning Disability 12. Speech or Language Impairment If you believe that your school-age child may be in need of special education services and related programs, screening and evaluation processes designed to assess the needs of the child, and his/her eligibility are available to you at no cost, upon written request. You may request screening and evaluation at any time, whether or not your child is enrolled in the District’s public school program. Requests for evaluation and screening are to be made in writing to the building principal. In compliance with the state and federal law, the Elizabethtown Area School District will provide to each protected handicapped student without discrimination or cost to the student or family. Those related aids, services or accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and obtain the benefits of the school program, and extracurricular activities to the maximum extent appropriate to the student’s abilities. In order to qualify as a protected handicapped student, the child must be school-age with a physical or mental disability, which substantially limits or prohibits participation in or access to an aspect of the school program. These services and protections for “protected handicapped students” are distinct from those applicable to all eligible or exceptional students enrolled (or seeking enrollment) in special education programs. For further information on the rights of parents and children, provision of services, evaluation and screening (including purpose, time and location), and rights to due process procedures, you may contact the building principal. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (“PDE”) will destroy or have destroyed all test booklets for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (“PSSA”), Keystone Exams, and Pennsylvania Alternative System of Assessment (“PASA”) one year from the date on which student results are delivered. PDE will also destroy or have destroyed all answer booklets for the PSSA and Keystone exams and all media recordings for the PASA three years from the date on which the assessment is completed. All information gathered about your child by the public school is subject to the confidentiality provisions contained in Federal and State law. The District has policies and procedures in effect governing the collection, maintenance, destruction, and disclosure to third parties of this information. For information about these policies and procedures, as well as right of confidentiality and access to educational records, you may contact the building principal in writing. Screening and Gifted Identification Process: In adherence to PA Regulations for Gifted Education, the Elizabethtown Area School District supports a multiple criteria method for identifying eligible students who may be gifted. Teachers, parents, school counselors, a school psychologist, administrators, and other individuals at the parents’ request are involved in the process. The process includes a review of classroom performance and school records, use of rating scales and parental input, and evaluation by school psychologist and multidisciplinary evaluation. All students in the gifted education program demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction. Parents who suspect that their child is in need of specially designed instruction beyond that required in 22 Pa. School Code Section 4 may result in writing their child be evaluated under the criteria of 22 Pa. School Code Section 16.22.

Marcus Snow at 717-824-0694 or mssnow@hotmail.com. Folks may also register on the morning of the event. Trophies sponsored by area businesses will be awarded, including a “Marietta River Rat” trophy to the judges’ favorite Rat Rod. New for this year will be entertainment by character juggler Chris Ivey. According to www.chrisivey.com, Ivey has been juggling for audiences for 15 years. He earned a gold medal at the 2002 World Juggling Championships and has appeared on several national television programs. Live music will be performed at Pig Iron Fest by The Carmitchell Sisters and Tim Rinard. The Carmitchell Sisters, the sibling duo of Anne and Bobbi, are known for witty banter and songs like “The Love Song for the Washington Boro Tomato.” Rinard plays a mix of classic rock and popular folk music. Children’s games and activities

will be offered in a special Kids’ Zone. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. The Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center will be open, and history tours of the furnace ruins will be offered throughout the day. Snow explained that in the 19th century, the riverfront from Marietta to Columbia was famous for large and productive foundries producing pig iron. When molten iron was poured in a cast, the ingots looked like piglets attached to the main mold - hence the nickname of “pig iron.” With eight furnaces and a rolling mill located throughout Marietta and Columbia, the iron industry had an impact on the area’s economic development and population growth and earned Lancaster County a high ranking in the production of pig iron at that time, according to www.mariettarestoration.org. The Musselman/Vesta Furnace was built in 1868 and used anthracite coal delivered from northeastern Pennsylvania by the canal system and later via the railroad. Pig iron produced in the furnaces was used to make rails for the flourishing railroad industry. Pig Iron Fest is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club and the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Proceeds from the event will benefit the preservation of the furnace site and Rotary charities.

Elementary students will perform songs at approximately 7 p.m. On Sept. 28, an all-you-caneat pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Silent and live auctions will start at 9 a.m. Auction chair Paula Hynum noted that more than 600 items and experiences will be part of this year’s auction. Sports memorabilia, getaways, sporting event tickets, toys, home decor, tools, and outdoor equipment are just a sampling of the merchandise that will cross the auction block. The silent auction selection includes numerous gift cards and services such as car

washes, oil changes, and cleaning. Bidding for the silent auction will close at 1 p.m. A children’s festival will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with carnival-style games, prizes, and bounce houses. For a one-time fee, children will receive a wristband for unlimited admission to the activities. MCCS high schoolers will volunteer at food tents, which will be open on both days and feature menu items including hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos, snow cones, homemade baked goods, and more. Elizabethtown Grange milkshakes made with the same ingredients and using the same process as the crowd-pleasers available at the Elizabethtown Fair - will also be

for sale. Proceeds from food sales will support the high school classes as they save funds for their respective senior class trip. Proceeds from the auction support the operational expenses of the school as it strives to fulfill its mission to come alongside parents to educate children and youths academically and spiritually. At MCCS, student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $200,000. Those who want a sneak peek of items that will be up for bids at the auction may visit https://mccs.schoolauction.net/ 2019auction/catalog.

“Our legacy is one where no senior goes unserved,” stated Wilson. “(MHNRC) fills a unique niche, providing skilled longterm care and rehabilitation services. Seniors in the county, as well as the broader community, are welcome regardless of financial status.” According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid or have very limited funds to pay for the cost of care, and in 2018 MHNRC gave more than $1.2 million in charitable care. Recently, a brother and sister searching for care for their mother commented, “From the moment we walked in the door (at MHNRC), we were, and still are, welcomed by kind, compassionate people. We have an overwhelming sense of relief knowing our mother is being truly cared for in an atmosphere of ‘home.’”

How has Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, maintained its positive reputation in the community for so many years? Director of advancement Kris Wilson is convinced that one of the keys to MHNRC’s positive reputation is the quality team members. “They are our greatest asset,” remarked Wilson. “Our staff continue to provide residents with top-level care and often see their work as a calling rather than a job. We aspire to have Mount Hope be a place to belong, rather than just a place to work.” At its 50th anniversary celebration in June, MHNRC received citations of excellence in care and mission from both the Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives.

Telenko accounted E-town keeper, Alania Telenko for 11 of Elizabethtown’s 12 saves with Duncan helping the cause with a defensive save. Hammaker and Alvarez remained front and center during the September 20th win over McCaskey with the pair accounting for all four goals plus two assists in a 4-1 victory. Hammaker started and ended the scoring but still found time to dish out assists on both of Alvarez’s scores in between. Sophie Brinkman helped setup Hammaker’s win capping second goal. Telenko needed just four saves to help bump E-town’s record to 3-3 in L-L action and 4-6 overall. Jesse Myers took the top spot in the boy’s race, finishing with a time of 17:11 while Katie Locker remained perfect in L-L action with a time of 20:02. Three of the boy’s runners joined Myers in the top 10 while Sierra Kapcsos and Olivia Shenk kept Locker company in the girl’s top 10. Kapcsos took second by finishing 50-seconds behind Locker with Shenk crossing the finish line at 21:40 and in fifth place. Katie Hook just missed the top 10, finishing in 11th instead with a time of 23:12. Emily Bonsall was Elizabethtown’s final scorer for the day, taking 14th with a time of 24:26. Alex Hartman (17:52) finished fourth, Nathan Johnson (18:24) sixth and Garrick English (18:44) ninth to complete the boy’s scoring five. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team stumbled through a lite two game week that saw the Bears go from sharing first place in Section Two with Ephrata on Monday to sitting in a third-place tie with the Mountaineers by week’s end. Tuesday the Bears battled Ephrata in a midseason first-place showdown. The Mountaineers struck first with an Angel Gonzalez-Garcia score in the eighth minute but the 1-0 lead would

not remain in place for too long. Adam Evans knotted the game, this time at 1-1, with his score in the 20th minute. Defense and keepers took over from there, leaving the contest in a 1-1 deadlock through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods. Elizabethtown applied more pressure throughout which led to a 14-6 edge in shots but Ephrata keeper, Braeden Sorensen and his 13 saves were able to keep the Bears at bay. JJ Oberholtzer only needed five saves to do the same to the Mountaineers. On Friday the Bears suffered a 2-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg that dropped Elizabethtown out of first and into third place in the section. The sides battled back and forth with Lampeter-Strasburg taking the early lead on a Darin Landis lamp lighter in the 29th minute. David Fry, with help from Sam Baker, answered the call in the 49th minute to make it a 1-1 game but L-S was able to escape with the win thanks to Arik Harnish. The junior scored what proved to be the game winner in the 53rd minute.

Oberholtzer (three saves) and Donovan Henriques (two saves) split time between the pipes in the loss. GOLF The golf team made their final regular season journey last Monday, trekking to Foxchase Golf Club for one last Section Two battle. The Bears, behind Alex Williams and Eric Gilbert, posted a team score of 346 or three shots off the second-place pace set by the host Mountaineers. Williams led that charge by posting the top score of the day with his round of 75. Gilbert finished his round just four strokes back and in a fourth-place tie with Warwick’s Ethan Minnich. “To have the medalist and the 4th best score on the course that will host the championship gives me hope and anticipation!” said head coach John Kline. “Without our “bump in the road” earlier in the season, I believe our kids would have fared better than 4th in the section. Lady Booters Pick Up Two More Wins The Lady Chargers took advantage of a slightly less hectic schedule last week, picking up a shutout over Halifax High School and garnering a win over CCAC opponent Harrisburg Christian. Friday night, the girls hosted Halifax for a 3-0 triumph, and despite maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the first half, the scoreboard remained unaltered for 32 minutes of play. The tenacious Chargers were initially frustrated with six shots on goal that connected with the goal frame rather than the netting. “We outshot them 11-3 in the first half. Obviously, there was frustration that the shots weren’t going in, but the girls came off at the half with the right attitude,” praised head coach Kim Schmitkons. “We were fully prepared to keep pressing until those goals fell.” Persistence paid off when Taegan

Akers scored her first of two goals eight minutes before the break to give the Chargers a one-goal advantage heading into the second half. “As a coach its very rewarding to see the movement and pressure we practice being put into the game, but even more, to see how players were acknowledging each other’s effort and good play on the field,” elaborated Schmitkons. Naomi Ewing and Julia Martin worked in tandem during the opening minutes of the second half, creating space on Halifax’s defensive end where Ewing slipped a through ball for Martin to finish with a quick, low shot past the Halifax keeper. Keeping intensity high, the Chargers spread their offense, and Akers took a turn on the left side of the field, chipping a beautiful shot from the corner of the 18 for her second goal of the day.

“Everyone was super excited for Taegan to put those goals in after all the work she has put in to get wide and open up the field,” Schmitkons added. “Hearing that encouragement from each other is building the confidence needed to embrace their roles.” Holding fast on the defensive end, MC keeper Marlie Niedwick, gathered seven saves to preserve the shutout. During last Tuesday’s trip to Harrisburg Christian, the Mount Calvary girls picked up a 2-1 CCAC win over the Knights. The MC squad got ahead in the game thanks to a converted corner kick that Ewing placed into the Knight goal box, finding Olivia Yordy who got the job done, redirecting the ball into the netting for the first goal of the contest. Ewing took her turn finishing the next success, dribbling through midfield traffic before rocketing a beautiful placement from outside the 18 to put the Chargers up by two. “After switching things around quite a bit for some players, I’m excited to see them getting comfortable in their primary positions, and excited for the chance to actually play them there as we are almost back to full strength,” celebrated Schmitkons. A dwindling clock paralleled an increased intensity from the Knights, and they managed to earn one goal back with a conversion of their own, five minutes before time expired. Niedwick was busy in the final minutes of the contest, scooping up five of her six second half saves during the last 13 minutes of play to thwart the Knights’ comeback attempt. “We are still working on building trust in games that will let us play consistently through any position, but this game showed that we are getting there,” Schmitkons continued. “We’ve

asked a lot of some players in introducing them to new positions, sometimes in the middle of games, and they are starting to play there with more confidence.” BOYS’ SOCCER MC boys’ soccer found their footing last week, scoring 14 goals against three opponents, to emerge from the week with wins over West Shore Christian, Christian School of York, and Susquenita High School. Friday night’s 4-3 overtime victory over West Shore was one the squad won’t forget anytime soon. Trailing 30, with less than 20 minutes left in the second half, the outcome didn’t look good for the Chargers, but everything changed when Damian Rutt converted a free kick to get the first MC tally on the scoreboard with 16 minutes left to play. The clock was merciless, winding down to four minutes remaining, still trailing 3-1, when Rutt found his second success on a corner kick that sailed directly into the West Shore netting. With seconds flying off the clock, it seemed unlikely the Chargers could capture the equalizer, but proving hard work will eventually pay off, freshman Brett Taylor, tracked down a loose ball rattling around in the West Shore goal box and finished the play, scoring the equalizer two seconds before the final buzzer sounded. Momentum was clearly churning in Charger favor entering the extra minutes, with the entire team pulling their weight to make sure their comeback efforts were rewarded-culminating in an opportunity for senior Isaac Grab to net the game winner, three minutes into the sudden death extension. “Obviously a thrilling match with a last second goal and a golden goal,

but win or lose, these boys have shown they have huge heart and don’t give up,” praised head coach Marc Myers. At first glance, it appeared Susquenita would have the upper hand in last Monday’s home field matchup, as an early possession by the visitors resulted in the first goal of the contest, but once Rutt opened scoring for the Chargers approximately five minutes later, there was no stopping the MC squad as they surged ahead to a 5-1 victory. Rutt captured a hat trick before the halftime break, with his second and third goals looking like mirror images of each other. Each time, Rutt emerged from the midfield traffic with possession of the ball, got ahead of the Susquenita defense, and created a one-on-one opportunity against the keeper. Demonstrating patience and control, Rutt tucked the back-toback goals into the low corners of the netting.

The second half displayed some fresh offensive efforts for the Charger crew, as freshman duo Taylor and Braden Esbenshade created space on the field. Taylor advanced the ball up the right side of the field, spreading Susquenita’s defensive line, then crossed the ball finding Esbenshade for the finish, and putting the Chargers at a 4-1 advantage. With 13 minutes remaining, Grab capitalized on the fifth opportunity for the final goal of the contest. Late in the game, Susquenita strung together a few passing sequences that produced a couple good looks at the Charger goal, but MC keeper Regan Mummau was ready and waiting, gathering up five saves in the triumph. “Improving our possession and working on keeping our defense strong will pay dividends as we get into more CCAC league play throughout the season,” noted Myers. Twenty-four hours later, the club took down Christian School of York with an unanswered slew of goals to earn a 5-0 shutout. Junior Dane Kelley had a big day, igniting the Charger offense with a pair of goals that got momentum churning. Grab stepped up to convert a penalty kick, and both D. Rutt and Jonah Rutt added a tally to the goal count. “The boys worked hard to not only win the games, but to try and play in a way that will make them successful when they face harder competition,” summarized Myers. The three-win week was a big boost to the Charger overall record, improving to 6-3 as they head into the latter half of the season. VOLLEYBALL Girls’ volleyball also had a winning week, adding three more successes to their impeccable 9-0 record, despite missing two key athletes during their final contest of the week. Friday night the squad took a trip to New Covenant, and though missing a few of their role players, put together the effort required for a 4-1 win over the Flames (25-14, 20-25, 25-20, 25-13). After claiming the first game, the Chargers stumbled a bit in the second, allowing the Flames to take a game, but rallied back for a strong third and See Chargers pg 16

E-town from pg 14 years…I think a fair amount of talent is waiting to develop.” Westin Kolaric (95) and Will Schaffer (97) completed E-town’s top four to give the Bears a 3-2 record on the day and a 16-14 record for the season. TENNIS With victories over Lebanon and Warwick last week the Lady Bear tennis team nearly doubled their win total on the season, moving from 3-7 to 5-8. E-town kicked off the week on Monday with a shortened, 5-0, win over Warwick. Kate Weissend, Lauren Masser and Mia Giordano all collected straight set singles sweeps with a different quartet holding down the doubles fort. Anna Bert and Mckenna

Smith collected one of the doubles wins while Allison Evans and Kathryn Hackenberg picked up the other. The Lady Bears closed out the week on Friday with a 7-0 win over Lebanon. Giordano’s three set win at number three singles was the lone match with any suspense as Weissend, Masser and Bert all won their singles matches in straight sets. The trio was that dominating they allowed just seven points combined in their three wins. Weissend and Masser also enjoyed a doubles win, topping Ashley Garcia and Alaina Colmenares by an 8-2 final. Bert and Smith picked up the win at second doubles while Rylee Bender and Elizabeth Nyveldt slid into the three hole and collected an 8-0 win over Ashlyn Bare and Cat Cruz.

In between the two victories was a 5-2 loss to Donegal. Both wins came in singles action starting with Araya Fahnestock’s three set win over Emma Shelly at third singles. Evans picked up the second team win, topping Ellen Zern 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 in number four singles. GIRLS’ SOCCER The high point in a busy week came last Monday for the Lady Bear soccer team. Elizabethtown was able to slip by visiting Exeter Township 1-0 thanks to Olivia Shuck, Kaelynn Sheetz and Kaitlyn Snyder. Snyder turned away all 15 shots she faced to collect the shutout while Sheetz setup Shuck’s game winner with 23:44 remaining. The week turned south from there starting with a 2-0 loss to Ephrata on Tuesday and continued with another 2-0 loss on Thursday, this one to Central Dauphin. Snyder finished the Ephrata game with 12 saves and added another seven in the Central

Dauphin loss. Elizabethtown closed out the week on Friday with a 1-0 overtime loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. Snyder had another seven saves but was unable to get to Lily Stoltzfus’ game winner that came with 7:45 remaining in OT. FOOTBALL One week on Elizabethtown’s annual football schedule is always more difficult than the rest and this year that was doubly so. That one week is the week E-town battles Manheim Central, the perennial L-L power house, who this year came into the Etown game having lost two straight for the first time since 2014. The Barons took out two weeks of frustration on the Bears en route to a 54-6 victory that dropped Elizabethtown to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Section Two play. Central more or less put the game away in the opening 24 minutes, outscoring the Bears 37-6. The lone

Elizabethtown score came on a Leon Allen one-yard plunge that cut the Manheim lead to 23-6 in the second quarter. The Barons made four more trips to the end zone before the final whistle blew, giving them the edge on the scoreboard and in total offense 547-94. Up next for the Bears is a visit from Solanco this Friday. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team continued their torrid pace with wins over Lebanon and Ephrata last week. The result is a 6-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in L-L play that has the Lady Bears sitting all alone atop the Section Two standings. The big reason for sole possession of first place was the 3-0 win over Ephrata on the 19th. “The team executed our game plan well against Ephrata. We served well across the board and Sydney Stewart

had a great night offensively,” said head coach Jenna Griest of the 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 win. “We played high energy, scrappy defense and were able to go on runs when we needed it most to beat a solid Ephrata team.” Stewart’s great night included 13 kills, two aces and two blocks. The Calaman sisters helped out with Hayden dishing out 19 assists while Haylee collected 12 digs. Krimson Dougherty (two blocks) and Kierra Hinkle (two aces) rounded out the team leaders in the win. The Lady Bears had a much easier time dispatching Lebanon earlier in the week, rolling to a 3-0 sweep with wins of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-10. Hayden Calaman picked up another 22 assists with Kallee Locker (eight kills, two blocks) and Ashley NyeSmith (seven aces, five digs) providing support.

fourth set. “We had to do some shifting, and it definitely affected the girls with the change we made, but we pulled it out,” commented head coach Kate Ferrari. “The seniors stepped it up in the third set to get the team back on track.” Leading the team with a wellrounded game was Kara Locker who registered 9 aces, 4 kills and 13 assists. Brie Lehman’s three blocks were

Rachel Green led the team in digs with five apiece. The week kicked off on Monday with a three-game sweep of Christian School of York, (25-11, 25-15, 25-16). Holding the upper hand in the contest gave opportunity for new formations and working underclassmen into the varsity formation. “The key was having some of the upperclassman guiding the younger players on the court,” encouraged Ferrari. “They have the skills; putting together the skill plus the mental side of the game can be a lot, but our JV players really stepped up last night.”

Hilsher fired 10 aces over the net, keeping the Crusaders scrambling, and duo Locker (nine assists) and Mummau (10 kills) kept the momentum rolling. GOLF Last Monday, Charger golf headed to Fox Chase golf club seeking an improvement on their last trip there.Their efforts were rewarded with improved scores all around. Dayspring won the four-team event with a score of 320. High Point Baptist followed closely with a 330, host school Lancaster County Christian turned in a 368, and Mount Calvary

big defensive moments for the club, as well as Grace Hilsher and Kacy Robinson teaming up with three digs apiece. Robinson, a sophomore, was also a factor on offense with 13 assists. The previous evening, the ladies swept quickly past Berks Christian with a fast-paced 3-0 win (25-16, 2515, 25-21). Kami Mummau brought energy to the contest slamming nine aces and 11 kills over the net, set up by eight assists from Locker. Lehman had another formidable night at the net with four blocks, while Hilsher and

recorded a 421. “Today was a good day for us,” encouraged head coach Matt Owlett. “We played Fox Chase a couple weeks ago and this time we came in with a 77-stroke improvement.” The Charger team was again led by Danny Smullen’s 89, a season and personal best. “Danny has been our leader all year and it was great to see him achieve a personal best round under 90,”

praised Owlett. Luke Turner (103), Isaiah Schaeffer (108), and Ethan Miller (121) rounded out the top four contributing scores for the club. “Ethan Miller counted in his first match ever, and is the third freshman to contribute to our team total this year,” pointed out Owlett. “These freshmen will continue to get better and allow us to compete at a higher level in the future.”
