Two Towns, One Big Expo
BY CAT SHANNON

We are all stronger and more effective when we work together. That’s the inspiration behind a free Business & Community Expo hosted by the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce and the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce.
The expo will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The collaborative event aims to connect local businesses, organizations and residents, giving attendees a chance to learn about services, build relationships and strengthen the community.

Building on the success of a combined mixer the Chambers held earlier this year, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Denise Grove and Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Michele Emenheiser wanted to continue working together for the
benefit of Chamber members and the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy communities.
“This expo is a great chance to connect, showcase your business and meet new people,” Grove stated. “What makes it even better is teaming up with the Mount Joy
Chamber. Working together brings more energy, more opportunities and more excitement for everyone.”
The public is invited to attend the expo and engage with more than 40 local businesses and organizations, including nonprofits, health care providers, real estate

Christmas Magic at the Star Barn
BY CAT SHANNON
Are we still technically in the summer months? Yes. Is it too early to start planning for Christmas? Absolutely not! That’s especially true when it comes to Christmas at the Star Barn Village, a fundraising community event held in December that sells out well ahead of time.
This year’s festivities will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.
New this year, all admissions will include Breakfast with Santa, held over six seatings

Taste of the Nations Will Support Hope Within
BY CAT SHANNON
Take a culinary journey around the world and help to support a local nonprofit at the same time. Taste of the Nations, a cultural culinary experience to benefit Hope Within Ministries Community Health, Counseling and Dental Center, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Stone Gables Estate at the Star Barn, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. It will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity to sample different dishes from all over the world under one roof for a reasonable admission price,” shared Laurie Reichert, director of development for Hope Within. Attendees will enjoy food samples from 10 countries, including Thailand, Ukraine, Kenya, Ethiopia and Afghanistan.
“Guests will visit each food table - each representing a country - to sample a food item native to that respective country,” Reichert said. “There will also be a charcuterie board, dessert table and silent auction.” Items up for bid will include something for everyone, she said.
“Silent auction (items will) include curated groupings of items for all tastes and budgets, including but not limited to international items like Ukrainian pysanky (batik-style eggs), hand-carved wooden items from Africa and blue and white ceramics from Holland, as well as Amish art, handicrafts and sports memorabilia,” she commented.
Volunteers will prepare and serve the food, she said, noting

Inviting people to the Business & Community Expo are (from left) Michele Emenheiser, Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce executive director; Denise Grove, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce executive director; and Allory and Jessica Melhorn, owners of Melhorn Manor.
Photos with Santa will be part of the festivities at Christmas at the Star Barn Village.

professionals, banks and restaurants. These businesses and organizations are eager to showcase their offerings and connect with the community, answer questions and offer giveaways and samples, said Emenheiser.
Among the participants is Elizabethtown College. “Elizabethtown College is honored to attend the 2025 Business Expo to foster and cultivate meaningful connections with our local community,” shared Christopher D’Imperio, senior director of corporate partnerships. “The immense value these relationships bring to our campus community cannot be understated, and we are looking forward to
growing and building onto the success of our community through collaborative efforts as a trusted educational partner for you or your organization.”
Melhorn Manor is centrally located, making it easy for residents of both towns to attend the expo, organizers said.
“Melhorn Manor is excited and honored to be a part of this business expo for the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce,” said owner Allory Melhorn. “Coming from a long line of Mount Joy business owners in my family and being one myself, I am always happy to help promote small businesses whenever I can. I
am grateful for the opportunity to host this event.”
Emenheiser encourages residents of both towns to attend.
“Whether meeting local businesses or learning about local nonprofits, we hope attendees leave the expo with a deeper appreciation for the people and services that make our towns great places to live, work, play and shop,” she said.

“They are showing their appreciation by preparing dishes from their native countries, such as Ukraine,” she explained. “Other volunteers were missionaries in the countries for which they are preparing and serving sample dishes, such as Kenya and Thailand.”

Nurse practitioner Betsy Avinash (left) works with a patient at Hope Within Community Health, Counseling and Dental Center.
Hope Within Ministries serves low-income residents of Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties with free primary health care services.
“We offer dental services by donation and low-cost, sliding scale counseling services to the general public,” Reichert said. “Hope Within Ministries is solely supported by donations through business and church partnerships, individuals and fundraising efforts.”

In the past, the organization held an Ethiopian dinner as an annual fundraiser, but this year, organizers decided to branch out to feature additional countries.
“This event is to acknowledge the various countries from which Hope Within has derived its patient base in addition to residents of Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties,” Reichert said. “Proceeds
provide funding for operations of Hope Within’s Community Health, Dental and Counseling Center. Some supplies, particularly disposable dental supplies, are expensive to purchase.”
She emphasized gratitude for the support of several people and organizations who are making the event possible, including Abel & Son Roofing & Siding; Duane L. Miller, Financial Advisor; Enders Insurance; Jon’s Tax Service; Sharp Shopper Grocery Outlet; and WitsEnd Home Works.
There is a discount to purchase tickets before Tuesday, Sept. 30. Tickets will also be available at the door if the event is not sold out. There are separate prices for adults and for children age 12 and under. For more information, visit https:// hopewithin.org/events.

The event always sells out early, said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope, the organization that benefits from Christmas at the Star Barn Village, so early reservations are recommended.
Along with the buffet breakfast catered by Food For Thought Catering and served in the Star Barn, the festivities will include pictures with Santa, a gift for children from Santa’s elves, pony rides, a DJ and dance party, face painting, Christmas cookie and cupcake decorating, children’s crafts, backyard games, giveaways, family photo sessions, a campfire with s’mores, holiday miniatures in the hog house, a self-guided tour of the Star Barn Village and plenty of holiday cheer. The grounds will be decked out in holiday finery, and the Star Barn, museum, chicken coop and carriage house will also be arrayed with holiday decorations.
“Guests can expect to be immersed in the wonder and awe of the Christmas season through their children’s eyes,” Myers said. “The professional family photos, delicious breakfast, beautiful decorations and so many kid-centered activities make it an event that families will want to come back to year after year.”
Christmas at the Star Barn Village is more than a holiday celebration, however. It’s an opportunity to change lives. Proceeds directly benefit Brittany’s Hope, a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering families and communities worldwide through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian programs.
“This event is a cherished tradition for families across southcentral Pennsylvania and beyond,” said board president Lisa Stewart-Miller. “Not only do guests enjoy a day of Christmas magic, but this event
helps orphaned and abandoned children around the world find safety, stability and forever families.”
Brittany’s Hope marks its 25th anniversary this year, Myers said.
“That means 25 years of aiding orphaned and abandoned childrenwith well over 1,600 children united with their forever families and thousands of children whose futures have been redefined because of the generosity and compassion of the friends and donors of Brittany’s Hope,” she stated. “Christmas at the Star Barn helps us to ensure that 100% of donations directly support the children we serve.”
She emphasized that the event would not be possible without supporters such as Stone Gables Estate and major sponsors Abel & Son Roofing, North Group Consultants and DDMP Investment Advisors.
“We’ve been holding our Christmas events since 2015,” Myers said, “and we could not do it without the generosity of our caterer, Food For Thought, and our tremendous volunteers, including the high energy and dedicated students - and their advisers - from Manheim Central High School’s Interact Club.”
Advance tickets are required for Christmas at the Star Barn Village. No general or day-of admission will be available. For tickets and more information, visit https://brittanys hope.org/events/christmas.
Bazaar
to connect with the greater community and raise funds for church projects.
“It is a mission of the church to be a visible outreach to the Maytown community,” Comfort-Butler said. “We have the bazaar every year to raise money for our missions and to provide good quality items for our community that are reasonably priced.”

Proceeds from the event are used to fund mission and community outreach programs of the church.
“In the past, we have supported Raise28, our local food bank, the Cherry Street Home, shut-ins in the community and various global and local missions,” Comfort-Butler shared. “We also address local needs as we are made aware of them. Each year we select different missions to support. At any time during the year, we add to this list as needed.”

Local Man Seeks Kidney Donor
Douglas Seaman, who was diagnosed with kidney disease in August of 2020, is seeking a kidney donor. Seaman, age 62, is a life-long resident of East Hanover Township in Dauphin County.
Seaman is currently on the transplant list at UPMC Harrisburg. However, due to the number of people on the transplant list at this
time, it may take five or more years to obtain a kidney for transplant.
Seaman noted that healthy adults may donate one of their kidneys and still have a long life.
For more information about becoming a kidney donor, call UPMC Harrisburg at 717-231-8757.

SNHA Adds Weavings to Art Collection
The Visions of the Susquehanna Art Collection at Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has added three original weavings.
“The Sentinel,”“Urey Overlook,” and “Fishing Creek,” all by local artist Phyllis Koster, were presented to SNHA on Aug. 14 by donors Larry and Lois Fry at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
Koster started her own weaving business, The Flying Shuttle,
decades ago. She has received awards from the Philadelphia Hand Weavers Guild, the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.
Koster’s three pieces may be viewed on guided tours at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. The center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
