Meals That Make a Difference BY CATHY MOLITORIS

B New Issue

eing able to prepare a hot meal at home is something many of us take for granted. For some people, due to age or physical limitations, cooking isn’t an option. That’s when Elizabethtown Meals on Wheels steps in to help. With a history stretching back decades, Elizabethtown Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to clients five days a week (excluding federal holidays). “We’re available for seniors age 65 and over and for anyone who struggles to prepare meals for themselves,” said Kent Bates, driver coordinator. “It could be someone who had a recent medical procedure or has a verified disability - anyone who has difficulty making a meal, regardless of age.” He said the mission of Meals on Wheels may be misunderstood, as people associate it with only serving the elderly.

When Doug Paglia and a team of leaders felt called to start a new church in Mount Joy, they stepped out in faith. People’s Fellowship Church began worshipping in early January, after Paglia left a position he held at a local Methodist church. “In late December, I felt it was time to move on, and there was a core group who wanted to go wherever we went,” Doug said, referring to himself and his wife, Terrie. As back-to-school season gets underway and we prepare for cooler weather, it’s the perfect time to restock your closet and refresh your wardrobe. Thanks to Ruhl’s Church, you can do this without opening your wallet. The church will host God’s Clothing Closet on Friday, Aug. 28, and Saturday, Aug. 29. Hours on Friday are by appointment at 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. No appointment is needed for Saturday shopping, which will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. “Free clothing, accessories, shoes, coats, linens, housewares, games, etc., will all be available for shoppers,” said Kris Gray, who organizes the event with Barb Dunmire. “Everyone is welcome to come shop for some ‘new-toyou’ clothes and accessories.” This is the 26th year for the event, which began after organizers shifted a church outreach to meet local needs. The church used to send clothing to a mission out of state, but it was expensive to ship the items, and organizers thought they could make a bigger impact in Manheim. Over the years, they have tweaked the event to provide the best shopping experience for guests. “Before we offered appointments, the event on Saturday was very crowded with enthusiastic shoppers,” Gray said. “Now, since several hundred people shop on Friday, the Saturday event is not crowded, and it is quite easy to shop. And we will still have lots of quality men’s and ladies’ clothing available on Saturday.” God’s Clothing Closet will See Finds pg 4

Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today ’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber L ancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking , scutching and hackling f lax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. “We will help people who just want meals until they get back on their feet after surgery,” he said. “We want to help anyone who needs it.” Elizabethown’s Meals on Wheels is a program of United Churches Elizabethtown Area. Monday through Friday, volunteers deliver a hot meal and a bag of extras, which could include any thing from bread and lunch meat for sandwiches to milk, a fruit cup or treats such as pudding. Food is provided by The Nutrition Group, based in York. “We deliver the meals in a sealed, microwaveable container,” Bates explained. “They’re delivered to us in insulated containers, so often the meals are still warm when the client gets them.” Along with providing food, Meals on Wheels volunteers provide a crucial social connection for many recipients. “We tailor our delivery

to what the client wants,” Bates said. “Some clients don’t want to have faceto-face contact every day, so they’ll put a cooler out and we’ll drop the meal in that. Others are looking for somebody to talk to, so a wellness check is part of the deal for those clients. A lot of these people don’t see or talk to anybody all day, so they look forward to seeing their deliver y driver.” To be eligible to receive a meal, people must live in the 17022 ZIP code. Services may be personalized to each client’s needs. “If someone only wants a meal one or two days a week, we can do that,” Bates said. Currently, Elizabethtown Meals on W heels ser ves 15 households. Meals are picked up by

OUR

volunteers at 61 E. Washington St. at 10:15 a.m., and the goal is to deliver the food by noon. Two volunteers cover two routes daily. “Each driver has maybe six to eight meals they’re delivering,” Bates said. “It only takes about an hour to an hour and a half to do it.” Although Bates said he currently has enough drivers to cover regular slots, he’s always looking for volunteers who’d like to serve as substitute drivers. “ We have roughly 20 drivers, and most of our drivers only deliver two days a month,” he said. “If someone is interested in being a sub, I can train them and put them on the list.” Bates also encourages anyone who could benefit

from the program to sign up to receive meals. “ We co u l d u s e m o re clients. I know there are a lot of people out there who could benefit from o u r s e r v i c e ,” h e s a i d . “ T here are people who don’t have family in the area and they could use s omeb o dy stop ping in and checking on them. Plus, they could use the nourishment.” There is a small cost for receiving meals, but financial assistance may be available through the Lancaster County Office of Aging. To learn more about qualifications, call 717-299-7979. To sign up for delivery, call 717-6893484 and choose option 5. To learn more about volunteering, call Dave Fritchman at 717-829-4733 or Bates at 717-823-1441.

“The very next day, I went to Sheetz Funeral Home and spoke to director Andy Dieck, and he just made his facilities available for us.” The building was perfect for the small but faithful group of about 25 people, but soon that number had expanded to upward of 40 people a week, and the church outgrew the space. “I went to see Mark Unger at RAISE28, and I told him we needed a little more room,” Doug recalled. Unger was happy to host the church, but another congregation had already expressed interested in meeting at the building on Sunday mornings, so the only option was to meet in the afternoon. Doug and the others didn’t want to do that. Before they had to decide their next step, however, the Lord showed them the way, Doug said. “ We got a call saying t h e o t h e r c h u rc h h a d backed out, and the space was ours if we wanted it,” he said. “This church has been one big miracle, one small miracle after another. It’s good to know when you step out in faith, the Lord’s there to back

you up.” Pe o p l e ’s F e l l o w s h i p Church moved to RAISE28, 105 Fairview St., in late July. The church holds nondenominational services on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. “ I t ’s a B i b l e - b a s e d church,” said Pete Parke, a member of the leadership team. “It’s not full of opinions and conjecture. It’s based on the Bible, and it’s God-centered.” The service is a blend of contemporary and traditional styles. Doug brings with him 50 years of experience as a minister. He grew up as a preacher’s kid, and he has experience with church planting overseas through mission work. People’s Fellowship Church is his first church plant stateside. Right from the start, Doug wanted his church to be a group effort. Names for the new church were submitted for a vote, and the congregants chose “ Pe o p l e ’s Fe l l o w s h i p ” intentionally. “We felt it was a name that said ‘unity’ and complemented one another,” Doug said. For Jennie Hean, moving with the Paglias was an easy decision. “I told (the) pastor I would follow him any where,” she said. “If he

preached in a barn, I would be in that barn with him and his wife. They’re both ver y car ing and active people. T hey visit our home worshippers. They go to the hospital, and they stay with you and pray with you. This man has changed my heart and my life. He’s shown me how to walk with Jesus.” Fellow congregant Betsy Cook agreed, adding , “He’s a man who doesn’t use words as much as he shows with his actions, and actions always speak louder than words.” Cook especially likes that People’s Fellowship Church is a shared venture. “It’s not a dictatorship,” she said. “It’s very collaborative, open and transparent. And anyone can voice an opinion and be heard.” Along with Sunday worship, the church holds regular Bible studies on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St. The next one kicks off Aug. 20. The congregation also strives to connect with the community, whether members are collecting items for a backpack drive at RAISE28 or gathering donations of personal care items for Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, the church will hold a baptism service in Chiques Creek, and the congregation will participate in the rescheduled Stars & Stripes event in Mount Joy on Saturday, Sept. 12. Communion is held on the first Sunday of each month, and a potluck luncheon takes place after the service on the third Sund ay of the month. Coffee and fellowship is offered after the weekly service. All of the members emphasize that the church is open for anyone who’s interested in attending. “We’re very welcoming,” Hean said. “If somebody s e e s t h a t y o u ’re n e w, they ’re going to go up t o y o u a n d i n t ro d u c e themselves.” Although the members credit Doug’s leadership with the church’s success, he’s modest in accepting the praise. “I have a great team helping me,” he said. “These are people who all work well together, and we’re looking forward to seeing what happens next.” To learn more about People’s Fellowship Church, search for “People’s Fellowship Church Mount Joy ” on Facebook or email peopleschurchinfo @gmail.com.
