t’s “An American Tradition.” That’s the theme for the 48th annual Elizabethtown Fair, which will begin on Monday, Aug. 23, and run through Saturday, Aug. 28. The theme sums up the fair perfectly, said Sally Nolt, fair secretary,

who noted that the fair committee is ready to go after having to cancel last year’s fair. “We’re back after a year off, and we’re back in full force,” she said. “You can see all of things you’d expect to see. We rebooked all of the entertainment from last year.” The fair will feature rides, games, food, agricultural exhibits, livestock
shows, competitions and more. “We really have something for all ages, from the baby contest to the Senior Citizens’ Day and all ages in between,” she stated. Nolt cautioned that although the fair is back in full form, some vendors may be missing, and some rides may not operate. “The only issue we’ve run into so far

this year is help. We have several stands who won’t be here this year because they just couldn’t find people to help them run them,” she explained. “We’ll also have fewer rides for the kids for the same reason.” Help is also needed to run the horseshoe pitch contest, she said, or the event will be canceled.

Lancaster County has a rich geologic history, and Jeri Jones loves to highlight it. He will offer a geologic tour of the Haldeman Mansion property on Saturday, Aug. 21, beginning at 10 a.m. The tour will be held on the grounds of the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. Jones, who operates Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, said the program will feature stations set up around the mansion. “I will be talking about several different topics,” he stated. “I’ll talk about the building stone that’s on the mansion, which includes limestone that

was quarried on the property.” He will include interactive demonstrations to help attendees identify different types of rock used to build the 18th-century home. The mansion makes a perfect site for the program, said Jones, who has given multiple talks at the location. “The Haldeman Mansion itself is really neat in terms of geology. It’s located between the oldest rocks and the youngest rocks in Lancaster County,” he said. Jones will also discuss local geology around the mansion and will highlight the geologic history of the Susquehanna River, which the mansion overlooks. “The river has a fascinating history,” Jones remarked. His tour will also include information about Samuel Haldeman, who was born in the home in 1812. Haldeman played a significant role in local geology, including discovering skolithos, a type of fossil, in the Chickies Rock area. “He had a vast knowledge of a lot of subjects,” Jones noted, including history and languages. “He’s someone you wish you could have met in person.” Jones will conclude his tour with an overall view of the geology of Lancaster County as a whole. Although the topic of his tour has a scientific focus,

Jones emphasized that the program will appeal to a wide audience. “I’ll be delivering the information in a sense that you don’t have to have any knowledge of geology to enjoy the program,” he explained. “I’ll speak in layman’s terms. Wouldn’t it be great if you could raid someone else’s closet and grab some “new to you” clothes? Thanks to Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, you can. The church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will hold its annual God’s Clothing Closet event in its gym on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26, 27 and 28. Thursday and Friday hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. by appointment only and will be limited to 40 shoppers per time slot. To reserve a shopping time for Aug. 26 or 27, call Barb at 717-201-7566 and leave a message. Saturday’s hours will be from 8 a.m. to noon, and no appointment is needed. This is the 21st year for the event, which features free clothing for sizes infant through 5X as well as shoes, accessories and household items such as kitchenware. “It’s open to everybody. We don’t look for need,” said Kris Gray, team leader of the event. “Everyone is welcome.” Gray explained that the inspiration for the giveaway came from another service
project of the church. For years, church members collected clothing to donate to a mission in Appalachia, but the expense of sending the clothing added up. When Gray started talking to local families that participated in a meal giveaway at the church, she realized the church could make an impact in its own community. “I asked the families coming in, ‘What else do you need?’ and they said, ‘We need clothes for our children,’” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Why are we sending clothes away when there is a need right here?’” A bag limit per person will be set on some of the most widely sought-after items such as infant and children’s clothes, but otherwise, shoppers are free to browse and pick up what they need, Gray said. “Everything is sorted by size,” she stated. “We get a fair amount of fun stuff too tuxedos, men’s suits, prom dresses, wedding gowns, leather coats. We never know what we’re going to get.” Church members will also have Bibles and devotional

Male Named As LSO Board Chair The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced the appointment of Sara Male as chair of its board of directors. Male stepped into the role previously held by Mary Ellen Davis, who served the LSO as board chair from 2017 and in many capacities before that role. Male has performed in the LSO for 10 years, most recently as acting principal cellist. She also chairs the LSO’s education committee, providing insight and direction for its eight education initiatives. Over the last season, the LSO provided a wide variety

Based in Lancaster County, United Disabilities Services (UDS) is a nonprofit organization that is committed to helping seniors and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Today, over 350 employees serve people with disabilities and the aging population in 40 counties across Pennsylvania. UDS provided services to more than 6,000 people last year alone. Over the course of 56 years, UDS has developed a wide variety of services and programs, including accessible home modifications, care management, custom wheelchair seating, and service dogs. The second annual golf outing for the UDS Service Dogs will be held on Friday, Aug. 20, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. On Aug. 20, golfers may check in beginning at 7:30 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A luncheon is set for 1:30 p.m. There will be prizes, giveaways, and a silent auction featuring a Kalahari Resort overnight stay and play package, a Troy Polamalu autographed Pittsburgh Steelers helmet, a Pittsburgh Steelers golf bag, a Darius Rucker autographed acoustic guitar, a balloon ride for two, and more. Only a portion of the dogs
that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Currently, the organization is creating a pilot program to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. At the golf tournament, the organization will premiere a video highlighting the Pups in Prison Program. In the program, 4-month-old puppies go to maximum security prisons for training with carefully screened inmates. The program gives inmates the opportunity to give back to their communities, as well as the chance to enjoy the affection and companionship that dogs are so eager to share with their humans. The video will focus on the story of one dog raised by an inmate who was released and currently resides in Canada. The dog is now serving in a school district. The video will show viewers how the Pups in Prison Program impacted the inmate’s life and the lives of those that the dog now serves. “If you’re a golfer, this a beautiful way to come out and support a worthy cause and

The Ephrata American Legion Post 429, located on Cocalico Street, will hold its second annual Patriots Ride/Day to benefit several charitable organizations on Saturday, Aug. 21. The recipients of the proceeds will be IM ABLE, Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors and the Cloister Ephrata American Legion Post 429. The event will begin with a motorcycle ride organized by the Ephrata American Legion Riders. Registration will start

The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership has announced the winners of its 10th annual photo contest. With 768 entries, this year was the most competitive yet. The grand prize winner was Nick Zell for his photo of the white cliffs of Conoy, which also took first place in the Susquehanna Adventures category. Other winners in this category were John Reitzel, who placed second for his photo taken in Wrightsville, and Matthew Krupp, who placed third with an image captured in Harrisburg.
