Frozen Fun Will Heat Up the Stage

Performing Arts Academy’s summer camps when “Frozen KIDS” and “Frozen JR.” hit the stage in late July and early August.

“(These) are familyfriendly shows that highlight how love is the key to melt hearts and bring unity to a world that is in desperate need of that demonstrated and lived out loud,” said Jill Thomasson, founder and artistic director of ExHaLTT.

“Frozen KIDS” will be performed on Saturday, July 26, at 1 p.m. “Frozen JR.” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, July 31 and Aug. 1. All performances will be held at the Tempest

Theatre on the Elizabethtown College campus, 1 Alpha Drive, and are open to the public.

“‘Frozen JR.’ is a 60-minute production, while ‘Frozen KIDS’ is

a 30-minute production,” Thomasson explained. Both shows will feature students who participated in either a one- or two-week camp at ExHaLTT, and both tell the

When people hear the word “Anabaptist,” they might think of Amish communities or Mennonite churches scattered across Lancaster County. But the roots of Anabaptism run far deeper than these familiar local expressions. The movement emerged 500 years ago in 16th-century Europe, born of deep conviction and radical dissent against the established norms of church and state.

According to Steven Nolt, professor of history and director of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, Anabaptism began as a grassroots movement during the Protestant Reformation.

“The word itself can be confusing,” he said. “Some people mishear it as ‘anti-Baptist,’ but it actually comes from a Latin term used in the 1500s to describe those who practiced adult baptism.”

At the time, infant baptism was nearly universal throughout Europe, required by both the Catholic Church and emerging Protestant churches. Baptism was not only a religious rite but a legal act that incorporated a newborn into both the church and society.

On a recent Sunday morning, Ryan Shepard could be found wearing a suit of armor and holding a shield while a child nearby waved a (fake) sword. It might be surprising to discover where he was doing this: in church.

Shepard, a 2024 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Columbia International University, is one of five summer interns at Community Bible Church in Marietta. He donned the costume as part of a

But the early Anabaptistsmostly young adults in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1525 - challenged that system. They believed that faith was a personal and voluntary decision, something that could not be made on someone else’s behalf. They rejected infant baptism and insisted that only those old enough to understand their commitment should be baptized.

lesson he taught to children attending Sunday school at the church.

“I want to go into ministry and work in a church or work overseas as a missionary in the future, so I wanted to get ministry experience learning how to serve within a church,” he explained. “I also really enjoy working with kids.”

Community Bible Church has held a summer internship program since 2020. It offers an opportunity for college students to get some real-life experience on their resumes and get paid for it.

“We really believe in our young people,” said Jim Hottenstein, associate pastor. “We think this is a win-win. It’s a win for the church, because they help out with summer programming, and it’s a win for them, because we get to invest in them for the summer. We made it paid because we wanted to attract college students, and college students need money. We put money in our budget to have a team of interns every summer, and we love it.”

All of the interns this summer are members of the church. They interviewed for the position at the beginning of 2025 and lead worship on Sunday mornings for up to 50 children in grades one through five - among other responsibilities - from May through early August.

Joining Shepard as summer interns are Hannah Slobozien, Allison Fry, Lauren Nissley and Ava McAlonis.

“This a church internship. We do more than just work with kids, but it’s mostly kids,” said Slobozien, a 2024 Donegal High School graduate and current Penn State student returning for her second year as an intern. “I love building relationships with the kids, investing in them, becoming someone they can look up to.”

Along with leading the Sunday worship program, the interns help with Backyard Bible Clubs, the church’s program that brings lessons out into the community, as well as Junior Camp, where they spend a week with students in grades three through five. They also visit with senior citizens at the church, help with events such as the church’s Fourth of July celebration and attend staff meetings.

the internship has provided an opportunity to not only work with children, but also learn something new.

been enjoying working with the children and learning about the inner workings of the church she’s attended for a decade.

“I’ve been super involved in children’s ministry my whole life,” she said, noting that she started assisting her mother in Sunday school classes as an elementary school student. “I want to be a teacher, so this fit into my desire to teach kids.

I have also enjoyed seeing more of the inner workings of the church.

I’ve gone here my entire life, but being able to see behind the scenes has been interesting.”

McAlonis just finished a year where she participated in the OneLife Institute in South Carolina, and she learned about the internship through Slobozien.

“We try to keep everything engaging and relevant for the ages and kids we’re working with,” she said, noting that the interns have a summer Sunday school curriculum that they use as a basis for their classes. “We want to be sure what we’re teaching really speaks to these kids and what interests them, and we want to play into our own strengths as well.”

Overall, the internship program has given young people a chance to take an active role in ministry while building skills for future success, Gardner said.

“The first two weeks is orientation, where we go over strength finders, so they learn their strengths and how to best work with each other,” said Cindy Gardner, director of children’s ministry. “We do a spiritual gifts course, life mapping, team building and getting to know each other. They also read two books and discuss the chapters once a week. One is a ministry book, and the other is for spiritual enrichment.”

“I wanted experience with ministry, and I wanted to get more involved with the community here,” said the 2024 Elizabethtown High School graduate.

For Nissley, a 2024 Penn Manor High School graduate and current student at Liberty University,

Fry, a 2023 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Cedarville University, said she’s

“Everybody who puts their faith in Jesus has a spiritual gift to give back to the church,” she remarked, encouraging other churches to consider an internship program. “Even if they can’t do a paid internship, they can encourage young people to use those gifts to serve the Lord.”

had radical implications. To the authorities of the time, it was a direct threat to the social order. Anabaptists were harassed, persecuted and often executed. Between 1525 and the early 1600s, historians estimate that about 2,500 Anabaptists were killed for their beliefs by both Catholic and Protestant state churches.

Now, five centuries later, Anabaptism and its roots are at the heart of the mission of the Young Center, and the center is hosting a conference with Mennonite Life called “Early Anabaptism in Global Perspective: Past, Present, and Future at 500 Years” July 22 through 24.

“This is an opportunity to think about the wider perspective on the 16th-century roots of Anabaptism while also thinking about the fact that today, these Anabaptist traditions still exist around the world,” Nolt said.

He’s served as the director of the Young Center since 2020. The center opened in 1986 at Elizabethtown College, a site founded by members of the Church of the Brethren.

“The Young Center started as a research entity on campus to study and offer public presentations and interpretations out of which the Brethren faith grew,” Nolt said. “We do public programming. We host conferences. We host researchers

from all over the world, and we teach some classes on campus.”

He noted that most of the questions visitors to the center have are about the Amish, but people also ask for information and resources about the history of the Church of the Brethren. In addition to providing research resources, the Young Center features the Bowers Interpretive Gallery, a small bookstore, offices and a classroom. Its mission is to conduct scholarly and interpretive investigations of the life, culture and beliefs of Anabaptists and Pietists, primarily in their North American context.

Preserving the history and interpreting the impact of the Anabaptist movement is a complicated topic. Unlike other Reformation movements tied to leaders like Martin Luther, Anabaptism was decentralized and diverse from the beginning. It developed in small, independent communities. Over time, these communities evolved into the various groups we recognize today: Mennonites and Amish, Brethren in Christ, Church of the Brethren and the Hutterites.

Some of these groups, particularly the Brethren in Christ, also drew from another movement known as Pietism. Emerging about 150 years later in the late 1600s, Pietism was a renewal movement within the Lutheran and Reformed churches.

Flower Club To Meet

The Elizabethtown Flower Club will meet at noon on Monday, Aug. 4, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The program will be “Growing Cut Flowers” by Tracy Zeiset of Country Joy Flowers. Guests are welcome. There is a fee for lunch. Reservations and cancellations must be made by noon on Thursday, July 31, by calling Barb Mowrer at 717-684-5331.

GEARS To Offer Fall Programs

GEARS will offer fall programs to the community from September to December. Programs will include preschool programs, youth sports, special events, fitness classes, aquatic classes, continuing educa -

tion sessions, and bus trips. Registration for the fall programs will open on Wednesday, July 30, at 8 a.m. To register or for more information, visit www .getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

“Pietists thought the Protestant churches had focused too much on doctrine and not enough on personal devotion, worship and service,” Nolt explained. By blending Anabaptist ideals like adult baptism and separation of church and state with the emotional and devotional focus of Pietism, these new Brethren groups emerged.

Today, Anabaptism has a global presence, Nolt said, with Anabaptist churches on nearly every continent.

“You might be surprised to learn that the typical Anabaptist today is a young woman in East Africa, not a Germanic farmer in Western Europe,” he remarked. “The largest Brethren group in the world is in Nigeria.”

The enduring Anabaptist message - centered on voluntary faith, nonviolence, community and service - still resonates in today’s world.

“That message of peace is more relevant or as relevant as ever,” Nolt stated. “As with any ideal that one holds, Anabaptists themselves have not always been entirely peaceful with each other. They’ve had their disagreements. Living out their convictions in ways that are consistent with their faith is one of the challenges they face, but also one of the opportunities to grow in their faith.”

story made famous by the Disney movie “Frozen.”

“The story of sisters Elsa and Anna remains closely the same for both performances, but the KIDS script is just condensed,” Thomasson explained. “Our audition was fully virtual this summer, so performers submitted a prescribed monologue, sang a selection from the show and learned a dance combination.”

The cast members prepared for the performances on their own time ahead of the camps, which began on July 21.

“After our production team reviewed all of the videos and cast the show, the cast are memorizing their lines, learning all of the vocals and dance portions via video,” she explained. “It’s a lot to put a full 60-minute musical production together in just seven to eight days, so the cast are busy working on their own so when camp begins, we can hit the ground running.”

hold its annual picnic at Elizabethtown Community Park.

Hope Shines in “Bright Star”

When Susquehanna Stage presents “Bright Star,” audiences will discover a musical full of the ups and downs of human emotion.

“It’s a beautiful show,” said Lakisha Welch, who portrays Alice Murphy, the woman at the center of the story. “There’s an element of fate in this show. It’s a show about being true to yourself and trying to right the wrongs of the past in the best way you know how. It’s about characters looking for redemption.”

“Bright Star” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 25 and 26 and Aug. 1 and 2, as well as at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 27 and Aug. 3. It will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.

Written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the Tony Award-nominated show is loosely based on a true story. It’s set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and moves back and forth in time from the 1920s to the 1940s.

“The show is the journey of Alice,” Welch explained. “When she’s young, she falls in love with the mayor’s son. They have a child, but the mayor does not want that stigma for his son, and he says he’s going to take the baby and put it up for adoption.”

It turns out what happens to the baby is actually much darker, but the show is not just sad or depressing, said Daniel Graf, who portrays Alice’s love interest, Jimmy Ray Dobbs.

“It’s a show about grief and mourning and loss,” he said, “but it’s so much more as well.”

Lindy Keefe, who plays Lucy Grant, a co-worker of Alice’s in the

later timeline, agreed with Graf’s assessment.

“It’s a statement on grief and loss, but it’s also one of hope and reunion and connection,” she said. “I think it’s surprisingly fun as well. I’ve seen shows where you leave, and you just feel heavy, and I don’t think this is one of those shows. It balances those feelings and emotions really beautifully.”

The show’s title refers to the characters finding their way and discovering who they were meant to be, Keefe shared.

“Your bright star is the thing that guides you and what you do in life,” she stated. “Love perseveres in this show. There’s the love that Alice has as she reconnects with her romantic love, but there’s familial love as well, finding your family again or creating your chosen family.”

The storyline moves back and forth between Alice as a teenager and as a career woman who has risen to the top in the literary world.

For Welch, portraying the differences in her character has provided an opportunity to hone her acting skills.

“It is a challenge, because I am way older than 16,” she said with a laugh, referring to Alice in the 1920s. “I’ve been working on changing the tone, pitch and inflection of my voice as Alice ages, and there’s also the physicality of it. Alice is a young, wild and free-spirited young lady who becomes this ultra-sophisticated take-charge kind of woman.”

“Bright Star” features a cast of 20. Additional lead characters include Zach Haines as Billy Cane, a man with whom Alice shares a mysterious connection, and Jordyn Johnson as Margo Crawford, a childhood friend of Billy’s.

The cast of “Bright Star” includes (from left) Daniel Graf, Lakisha Welch, Zach Haines and Jordyn Johnson.

The score includes Americana music with bluegrass and country themes, providing the perfect backdrop to the story’s time and setting. The dance numbers also complement the plot, Keefe said.

“The dancing matches the sound and time period,” she said. “There’s swing and tap and folksy music. The dance numbers show fun, rhythmic movement in a way that really matches the tone of the show.”

Like Keefe, Jared Mattson portrays one of Alice’s co-workers in the 1940s scenes. His character, Daryl Ames, only knows the surface of Alice’s story at first but begins to learn more about her past as it’s revealed to him and Lucy.

He noted that playing the comic relief in a show full of heavy themes has been fun and a unique challenge to embrace.

“‘Bright Star’ is so fun because it’s simple characters, but it’s set in a story of epic proportions,” he remarked. “It’s easy to connect with the characters, but you leave the show going, ‘Whoa!’ with this rollercoaster of emotions.”

Audiences will also walk away connecting to at least one character in the show, Graf said.

“Because there are different
