One On One With Jared Mees Ride Will Support Four Diamonds By Chelsea Peifer

After Dustin Smith graduated from Hempfield High School in 2007, he was excited to head to the University of Central Florida to study electrical engineering. “He was very, very smart, and he was excited to be taking some advanced courses. During that first week of classes, he called me and said he didn’t feel good,” said Dustin’s mother, Christine Hogan. “He was a gamer, and he said that he couldn’t even play games because his hands weren’t feeling right.” Hogan urged Dustin to go to the campus infirmary, and from there he was admitted into a hospital in Orlando. “He had surgery that night because they found a grapefruit-sized tumor on his brain,” recalled Hogan, who was able to fly to Orlando to be with her son. Dustin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that typically affects people ages 10 to 20. He returned to Pennsylvania

to receive treatment at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. After a courageous battle, Dustin passed away on Christmas Day in 2011 at age 23. “We were so fortunate to live near Hershey. Everyone there is absolutely wonderful. Their staff was so accommodating, and they really treat the whole person,” Hogan remarked. Four Diamonds helped to cover Dustin’s medical expenses that were not covered by insurance, and now Hogan continues to raise money to give back to Four Diamonds and pay it forward in any way that she can. Hogan is part of the Susquehanna Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG) 1903, a nonprofit motorcycle riding group based out of Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle in Elizabethtown. Susquehanna IMRG 1903 has been fundraising solely for Four Diamonds for the past three years through silent auctions and holiday cake roll sales, and now the group is hosting a special motorcycle ride to benefit Four Diamonds and its efforts to See Jared Mees Ride pg 4

Community Picnic To Feature Forgotten Friend Reptile Show

High St. The camp will be under the direction of John Myers, Elizabethtown varsity girls’ basketball coach. The camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game.
