Bear Creek Students Win Top Honors In History Contest
What started out as a year of celebration to observe the 20th anniversary of Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, has evolved into an effort to continue providing services during the coronavirus pandemic. Brittany’s Hope, which is based in Elizabethtown, has had to change its focus from celebrating to fundraising. “We were planning all these wonderful things to celebrate and commemorate our work over the past 20 years,” stated Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “We’re now basically redefining our efforts and getting creative on how to carry on the work we started. In place of celebration, we are revamping, reworking and restructuring to continue to breathe life into the important

The fundraising gala took place just before the shutdown orders went into place. However, its 20th annual golf tournament at Conestoga Country Club in August has been canceled. Plans call for the Brittany’s Hope 5K to take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Stone Gables, 1 Hollinger Lane Elizabethtown, but it will be held with a new socially distant format. More information about the event is available at www.walkoflove.org. Brittany’s Hope was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Brittany’s Hope is not an adoption agency. Rather, it provides adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions.

“The family that started this organization adopted 12 children, including myself, so I am an adoptee,” explained Sahd. “Brittany’s Hope was established as a result of the death of their first adopted daughter, Brittany. Out of that tragedy came the birth of Brittany’s Hope.” In addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “In developing countries many children are stuck in institutional care and there are those left behind
because of their special needs,” said Sahd. “We provide direct care to orphaned children who are not eligible for adoption or who are waiting to be adopted.” During the March gala, attendees learned about the success of the organization over the past 20 years and met some of the adopted children. “In 20 years, we have impacted 29,000 families through our humanitarian efforts,” Sahd reported. “(Through) adoption grants, we have found homes for 1,387 children with special needs. They are in the United States and thriving and they are loved and cherished.
In addition to providing adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, provides humanitarian aid, including food, to orphans around the world. We are not only helping orphaned children, but families who have the calling to adopt and grow their families.” Sahd credits Brittany’s Hope supporters for the success of the organization. “We do not receive

Since Lancaster County has moved to the green phase of reopening, Mount Hope Estate is able to announce its revised 2020 events schedule. The following events will be offered: Blues & Brews, Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18; Flavorfest, Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26; Pennsylvania Brewers Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16; Celtic Fling, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23; and Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, weekends and Labor Day, Sept. 5 through Nov. 1. Event formats will be modified to implement new safety initiatives designed to keep guests, performers and employees safe. These practices will include, but not be limited to, enhanced sanitization protocols, social distancing, event capacity management, the use of personal protective equipment and additional staff training. With capacity restrictions in place, all tickets for the 2020
events will be by reservation only for a specific date. All tickets will be presold online with no day-of gate tickets sold for the 2020 events. Ticket details will be provided when the box office system is prepared to begin selling the reserved tickets. Instructions will be provided to current ticket and season pass holders. Mount Hope Estate staff members look forward to welcoming guests back to the Faire grounds and ask for patience as they continue to monitor the
changing guidelines and adjust as required. Updates will be provided to guests through the Faire’s Facebook page, at www.parenfaire.com and through the weekly email newsletter. Guests can join the email newsletter list through the homepage of the website. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,� Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.� The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,� Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.� “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,� said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.� The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the
