Elizabethtown Class of 2025 Looks to the Future

Speaking at Elizabethtown Area High School’s Class of 2025 graduation, valedictorian Austin Risser encouraged his classmates to stay present.

“We’ve been dreaming about this for years, so don’t let it slip by,” he said. “Tomorrow, we can worry about college, or paying bills, or getting a job or anything else that lies ahead. But for tonight, let’s enjoy this moment.”

The Class of 2025 held its commencement ceremony on June 5 at LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. The ceremony included remarks by principal Jason D’Amico and superintendent Karen Nell and an introductory speech by Kylie Tobias.

Kylie recalled highlights of the 4,500 hours she and her peers spent at school, not counting the time dedicated to sports, clubs, homework and everything else. She put a spotlight on academic

success, extracurricular achievements and the community involvement of her classmates.

“And now, it’s time for us to take all of those wins, whether it was academically, physically or even the small personal wins

we had, and transfer that to our next stage in life,” she said. “This chapter may be over for each of us, but it is just the beginning of an even better one.”

In his speech, Austin thanked God, his parents, his older brother (also a valedictorian) and all of the teachers, staff members, coaches and classmates who have supported him through his years in the district. He also emphasized the importance of reflecting on the past and dreaming of the future while living in the moment.

“In modern times, many people struggle to live in the here and now,” he said. “We look at our phones after finishing an assignment. We walk through the hallways with AirPods in. We don’t

In 2024, George Kohlweiler lost his wife of almost 59 years to Alzheimer’s disease. Not one to sit around and wait for someone else to act, George took his grief and turned it into a way to help others.

“When you step aside from the individual agony and look at the big picture, you realize that Alzheimer’s is the No. 1 most expensive disease in the United States that has no cure,” George said. “I decided last February, I could either stop, crawl into a

Mountain Conquerors participants are neither required to move a mountain nor expected to scale one on their own.

Instead they will have an opportunity to embark on a potentially life-altering adventure.

Mountain Conquerors is an

organization founded in 2010 by pastor Matt Kroll. “It is an outdoor camp that teaches leadership skills, life skills, and grows character,” he said. “It provides the experience of a lifetime. That’s our motto, and that’s what we do.”

Until this year, the expedition, which is free thanks to sponsors, was only available for boys ages 13 to 16. MCg, Mountain Conquerors Girls, will have a

get to know the teachers and people in our classrooms. In today’s world, we are often chasing the next dollar, the next day off, or the next opportunity.”

He admitted he’s guilty of this himself and that, while time has flown by in school, he believes the best is yet to come.

“No matter what path we take, the next 18 years will hold some of the most eventful and exciting moments of our lives,” he said. “No matter which way you go, make sure to appreciate every moment you have been given.”

Jacqueline Raybold was named salutatorian. She recalled a “lifetime of mem -

ories” that featured laughter, challenges, triumphs and tears, and she remembered telling adults she wanted to be a princess when she grew up. Now that adulthood is here, she acknowledged that what comes next is a little scary.

“We’re expected to decide at age 18 what we plan to do every day until we retire, while most of us haven’t even made plans yet for after this ceremony,” she said. “Perhaps instead of asking what you want to be, the better question is, who do you want to be? Our responses tend to focus on our careers, but that’s not really who we are. Or all we can

be. It certainly should not define our value. And contrary to popular belief, it cannot determine our future happiness.”

Noting that society tends to promote fame and fortune as indicators of success, she challenged her classmates to think otherwise.

“Let’s measure our future success not by the size of our bank accounts, our homes or our Instagram following,” she advised. “Instead, let’s define it by our level of happiness, our willingness to share our unique talents and blessings with others and the impact we’ve made on others’ lives.”

The program will be led by Kristen Patterson, owner of Sorted & Staged Home Enhancement Services.

A Volleyball Skills Clinic for students in grades five through nine will be offered on Wednesdays, June 25, July 2, and July 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. A trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor will take place on Friday, Aug. 15, departing from the parking lot of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., at 8 a.m. and returning around 8 p.m. Participants may explore Inner Harbor and visit places such as the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium, and the Top of the World Observation Level.

separate trip for girls in the same age range. Applicants must be residents of Lancaster County.

The inaugural MCg, which will be led by Kari Stauffer, will take place Monday, June 30, to Thursday, July 3. The application deadline is Monday, June 23. The boys’ excursion will be held Monday, Aug. 4, to Saturday, Aug. 9. The application deadline is Monday, July 21. Base camp for both trips will be set up in Halifax.

Each trip is limited to 12 participants, so everyone who applies is not ensured a spot. Forms are available at www.mountainconquerors .squarespace.com.

“Our job is to provide an experience for these kids that will last a lifetime and get them plugged in, if they’re not already plugged in, to a healthy structure,” said Kroll, who is the program’s coordinator and the leader of the boys’ camp. “Whether that’s church. Whether that’s a teen center. That’s the goal. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel of the structure.”

Staff members, who are all volunteers, will lead campers on practice hikes before taking a backpacking trip along the Black Forest Trail. “The whole premise of Mountain Conquerors is to build young (people) of character,” said Kroll, who is pastor of The Lord’s House of Prayer in Lancaster city. “We use the outdoors to facilitate the classroom. Subjects we are really (focusing) on are character, potential, goal setting, teamwork, leadership skills, and overcoming fears.”

Justin Reed participated in Mountain Conquerors in 2020 and is now one of the trek’s leaders. “I learned

things with God helping you,” he said. “I had never experienced anything like that before.” Reed said he teaches younger hikers to embrace the things they can’t control and take on the challenges.”

Mountain Conquerors is designed to test one’s mindset. “You don’t know what character you have until you put it under pressure,” Kroll said. “Are you going to whine? Are you going to quit? You start hiking up a hill; your true character comes out. We’re good with that because now we have something to deal with.”

The pastor cited Galatians 5, which includes the allegory of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit and characteristics such as patience and kindness. “We’re looking at all those things, the staff included,” Kroll said. “We all need to grow, and we want to challenge each other and encourage each other and hold each other accountable. By changing your thinking and the words you speak, you can change the outcome. The kids begin to overcome the obstacles they didn’t think they could ever overcome. These are life skills you can teach in a classroom but can’t experience unless you really do it.”

Mountain Conquerors camp provides challenges that test the mind and body. Traditionally, on the first day of the boys’ camp, participants are instructed to plant a flag after 90 minutes of hiking. The following day, campers get a workout on the ropes course before going on the same hike as the day before. They are challenged to beat their time from day one. “There’s never been a year where they haven’t beaten

At the end of the week, campers must trek one by one up a steep incline that Kroll refers to as Challenge Hill. Until that point, everything is done as a team. “It’s great to have a support network, but

there are many times in life when it’s just you, your hurdle, and God,” Kroll said. “I’ve seen some amazing things in this camp. From the beginning to the end, the transformation of the kids is pretty cool.”

hole, or I could keep going until God told me to stop. Well, He hasn’t said anything yet.”

George, who is 88 years old and lives at Masonic Villages, has participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Lancaster and, while he will be part of a team participating in this fall’s event as well, he wanted to do even more for the cause.

“I have some grandkids in the area who play soccer in the E-town School District,” he said. “Every year, they have a chicken barbecue to raise

money for the soccer team, and I thought this would be something we could try. I wanted to do not a Masonic Villages chicken barbecue, but an Elizabethtown-area barbecue for everyone. With the support of the Villages and the community, we could do some good.”

A chicken barbecue organized by Masonic Villages’Walk to End Alzheimer’s team will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2. Pickup of meals will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of DDMP Investment

Advisors, 101 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. The meal will feature a half-chicken prepared by Peters’ BBQ, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, a sweet treat and a beverage.

When Angie, George’s wife, was in memory care at Masonic Villages, George visited her daily. He got to know the nurses and other staff members in the unit, and they formed a deep connection.

“George came to our neighborhood every day,” said memory support nurse manager Dixie Colvin, referring to the memory care unit. “He had lunch with us every day.”

She knew George would benefit from staying active and involved with others, so she encouraged the idea of George joining the Masonic Villages team, and she supports his idea for the chicken barbecue.

“When Angie passed, I couldn’t stand the thought of not seeing him because he was a staple of our neighborhood, so I had to give him something else to do,” she

said with a laugh.

Residents of Masonic Villages have had a team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the past two years.

“Each year we have participated, our team member numbers have grown, and our donation amount at the end of the year has grown,” Colvin said. “Last year, we were the No. 1 team for fundraising.” The group raised more than $5,000.

Although it’s a Masonic Villages team, it’s open to anyone who is interested in joining along with residents of the retirement community.

“Last year, we had over 40 people on the team,” Colvin said, noting that about 15 people participate in the actual walk. “You don’t have to walk to participate with us. You can support us in other ways. The nice thing about our team is it includes employees, residents of retirement living, residents of personal care, family members of health care residents, family members of retirement living residents, so it’s growing out into the community.”

Resident Elaine Pfleger joined the team two years ago after her husband of more than 30 years, Rudy, passed away.

“My husband had just died, and I needed something to do,” she said. “I started walking. One night, someone stopped me on a walk and said out of the blue, ‘Are you going to do the Alzheimer’s walk?’ I hadn’t heard anything about it, but I joined up.”

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Greenfield, 1853 William Penn Way, Lancaster.

George, who is recovering from knee replacement, is looking forward to walking, and he’s hoping the community will purchase chicken barbecue tickets.

“Wouldn’t it be great to be able to say, ‘We donated that $1 that found the cure’?” he said. “Not for us, but for our children and our grandchildren. Somebody’s got to provide the funds to find a cure. It might as well be us.”

Tickets will be available for the chicken barbecue through Saturday, July 19. They may be purchased from staff and resident Walk to End Alzheimer’s team members; at Second Friday events in Elizabethtown; at Udder Bliss Creamery, 189 Ridgeview Road; Twisted Easel, 1 S. Market St.; and Designs Unlimited, 2750 N. Market St.

For more information or to join the fundraising efforts of the team, call George at 717-3615381. To donate, visit https://bit .ly/43yG0KG, select “Find a Team” and search for “Masonic Villages.”
