MS FitEffect Puts Strength Into Motion

Mark Mueller and his wife, Jackie, took a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and turned it into an opportunity to help others. Jackie was diagnosed with MS in 1998, and the couple sought to treat the disease as naturally as possible, without medication. They experimented with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t, and their research led to MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 15, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St.

“Each participant selects a time with their trainer for their private one-hour weekly session,” Mark

explained. “We have sessions available Monday through Saturday in the morning, afternoon and some evenings. It is based on the participant’s and trainer’s availability.”

“We meet each participant where they are at and move them forward from there.”

As Mark shared, MS FitEffect is personalized.

“The program is different for everyone, as the trainer custom-designs the program for the particular participant,” he stated.

“MS is different for everyone;

there are no two people who share the same set of symptoms at the same intensities with the same presentation of symptoms.”

While specifics vary for each participant, the program focuses on strength, stamina and stability for all sessions.

“We use a combination of stretching, relaxation techniques, weight training, cardiovascular training, balance and gait training and functional training,” Mark said. “We meet each participant where they are at and move them forward from there. We focus on helping them achieve a better quality of life by working with them on activities of daily living that have become difficult for them.”

MS FitEffect is open to anyone with MS or any demyelinating disease.

Support a local nonprofit, enjoy beautiful surroundings and get some exercise all at the same time by participating in the Hope Within Ministries’ Let Your Light Shine 5K Walk/ Run. The event will be held on

Saturday, July 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

“The idea came about as a means to represent what Hope Within Ministries is - a health care, dental and counseling center,” said Laurie Reichert, director of development for the

It’s more than books on wheels. The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul.

“Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to

be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.”

When not on the go to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. The bookmobile is a 22-foot-long box truck with a single entrance

organization. “We promote good health, good hygiene and good mental well-being to individuals who oftentimes cannot afford to buy insurance - individuals, who, for some of them, come to us as a last resort seeking medical attention for conditions they left go for too long, until it takes a toll on their health and subsequently their mental health.”

The 5K will serve two purposes, she said: raising awareness of Hope Within Ministries and asking for public support.

“We are always looking for volunteers and people to get involved in our mission,” Reichert shared. “Our clinic is staffed by volunteers, both medical and non-medical. We are always recruiting volunteers so we can better meet the needs and demands of our growing patient population. There is a tremendous

demand for dental services, and we could really use another volunteer dentist so we can expand services to the public. Right now, we are limited to providing dental services to our existing medical patient base.”

The 5K course will take participants through the scenic property of Stone Gables Estate, which features the Star Barn. The course is a mix of uneven terrain, stone paths and uphill sections, providing a challenging route with plenty of pretty views.

“This course will take you through parts of the estate that are not open to the public,” Reichert stated. “With so much greenery, there will be many photo opportunities. Walkers who do not want to walk the full 3.1-mile course will have an option to return to the Star Barn, where the race commences, via a shorter route.”

Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in various age categories, and free post-race refreshments will be available for participants. Activities for children will also be featured post-race, and Mountain Mug Coffee will be available for purchase.

Reichert noted that sponsorships make the 5K possible, and she offered special thanks to Abel & Son Roofing & Siding and WitsEnd Home Works. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

All proceeds from the 5K will help support the mission and work of Hope Within Ministries.

“We provide primary health care services at no cost to residents of Lebanon, Lancaster and Dauphin counties,” Reichert said.

“This also includes childhood immunizations and sports physicals for youngsters. We also provide dental services by donation - cleaning, screenings, sealants, extractions, education, etc. We

provide low-cost counseling to the public. ... Counselors address topics such as marriage, finances, addiction and other areas of mental health.”

Hope Within Ministries, located at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown, functions solely on donations from individuals, church partners and private and public organizations.

Early-bird entry for the Let Your Light Shine 5K, featuring discounted tickets, will end on Saturday, June 15. Tickets will be available for one rate after that date and up until the race date and for an additional fee on the day of the race. Preregistration until Saturday, July 5, will include a race T-shirt and a swag bag. To register, visit www.runsign up.com/Race/PA/Elizabethtown/ LetYourLightShine5K. Garden Tour Will Showcase Blooms and Backyards

From water features to window boxes overflowing with blooms, the Marietta Garden Tour will highlight creativity among the foliage found in seven homes. The tour will be held rain or shine on Sunday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The stops on the route are all within

walking distance along Front Street and throughout Marietta.

“We have some really great things to see and some unusual things,” said Karen Sullivan, tour chairperson. “We have a house that has a historic railroad track going right through the front yard.”

That home, on Front Street, features dogwood trees, lots of shade-loving plants and a large magnolia tree.

As Sullivan explained, the railroad tracks date back to the 1800s, when coal was delivered to the front door of a supply station then located where the home is now.

When Front Street was paved, a portion of the track was removed, but some of the track was left in

the home’s front yard.

“This is some of the history you’ll see in Marietta,” Sullivan said. “We have some very old homes, and there’s lots of history.”

At the home of Glen and Judith Mazis-Kennedy, tourgoers can observe blooming flower beds of annuals and perennials, a pond surrounded by a low stone wall, native plants and bushes and Serenity Rock, a locally famous outcropping highlighted by roses, purple salvia and forsythia.

“We have a lot of birds that visit the yard,” Judith said. “The other day, I counted 30 different birds.”

She and Glen enjoy hanging out in their backyard sanctuary, which also features mature shade trees,

a vegetable garden and an Amishbuilt gazebo.

Other stops on the tour will showcase herb gardens, fountains, a goldfish pond, ginkgo trees, Japanese maple trees and fairy gardens.

Along with the tour, the event will feature a pork barbecue meal for sale throughout the day at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. Meals can be enjoyed at the house or taken to go.

Two seminars, at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., will be held at the Community House. Anne Sipe, a former Community House board member and attendee of the Longwood Gardens School, will speak on flower arranging.

Mulberry Thrill, located at 100 W. Market St. in a historic bank, will be open for refreshments during the tour.

New this year, an art exhibit titled “In Bloom” will be open at MH Art Gallery, 42 W. Market St. Featuring 34 works, the exhibit

and equipped with a wheelchair lift and portable book carts.

“If we can fit into the space, we’ll come to it,” said Lilley. “When you get up in there and turn to your left, it’s just walls of books. We can tailor the materials to the crowd we’re going to see. We have shelves of cool stuff. It’s a neat operation. I really love it.”

In an effort to provide reading materials to local citizens who experience difficulties getting to their community libraries, the LSLC bookmobile visits more than 45 unique locations each month, places like schools, retirement communities, churches, local events and child care centers. The stops are typically an hour to 90 minutes in length and usually well attended.

“We want to serve patrons in the community who might struggle to reach their brick-and-mortar libraries,” said Lilley, a resident of West Lampeter Township. “We’re able to meet them where they’re at. We’re always looking for new places to go. We want to talk to

patrons. We want to hear what they want to read. That’s how we build our collection.”

“A lot of it is people reaching out to us for bookmobile services,” continued Lilley. “Most of the communities will reach out to us and let us know they’re interested.”

The bookmobile has the capacity to house 2,000 pieces of reading materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, New York Times bestsellers, children’s books, young readers’ book series, the works of local authors, books about local history and events, religious books, holiday and seasonal books, and large-print books. But the bookmobile also rolls with DVDs, music, audio books, kits, puppets and brain teasers.

In 2024, 1,600 LSLC bookmobile patrons checked out 15,539 pieces of material.

“We offer all kinds of services,” said Lilley. “We can help people look up something. We can print on-site. We can refer people to their local libraries. People can

Susquehanna Stage To Present “The Shark Is Broken”

Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will present the 2023 Broadway play “The Shark Is Broken” from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 22. The show, which will present the behindthe-scenes chaos of “Jaws,” is just in time for the 50th anniversary of the film.

Set aboard a floating movie set in 1974, “The Shark Is Broken” offers a look at the real-life drama that unfolded between “Jaws” stars Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Directed by Jeremy Patterson, the production will feature performances by Sean Young as Robert Shaw, David Kloser as Roy Scheider, and Sean Caldwell as Richard Dreyfuss.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on June 13; Saturday, June 14; Thursday, June 19; Friday, June 20; and Saturday, June 21, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, and June 22. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www .susquehannastage.com.

check out books and return books, even if they didn’t get them from the bookmobile. However we can help to bridge that connection.”

“I really love when someone’s not sure what they want and I can help them find it,” Lilley continued.

“Then having them come back and tell me if they liked it or not. Just getting to know patrons in that way is really fun.”

The birth of the LSLC bookmobile can be traced back to the 1960s. The current bookmobile is the sixth vehicle to serve the program.

While the bookmobile is one-of-

a-kind, it’s not all that famous. “Some people do know about the bookmobile,” said Lilley. “A lot of people will tell me they visited the bookmobile when they were kids. There is an element of nostalgia to it. I’ve also talked to people who said that they didn’t know the bookmobile was still running. I also meet people at a lot of stops who haven’t been to their closest libraries in a while. We’re always trying to get the word out about it.”

Summer and Support Mt. Hope

You’re invited to a Summer Backyard Barbecue Picnic and Groundbreaking Ceremony at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community on Sunday, June 22, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The outdoor event will take place rain or shine at 3026 Mt. Hope Home Road, Manheim, and will include a catered meal, yard games, live music, guest speakers and kids’ prizes. Seating will be available under a large tent, but attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will celebrate Mt. Hope’s 56th anniversary as well as the start of new independent living cottage construction. Donations will be accepted at the event, with all proceeds directly supporting the residents of Mt. Hope.

The catered meal will feature grilled pulled pork and chicken with barbecue sauces on soft rolls, baked macaroni and cheese, savory baked beans, creamy coleslaw and desserts.

Mt. Hope is home to 50 nursing care residents, who rely on the facility for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services, as well as those who reside in the current six independent living apartments. The addition of new cottages reflects Mt. Hope’s commitment to seniors and individuals with disabilities, many living on limited incomes.

“Most of our residents do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care,”

shared Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Eighty percent of our residents do not have funds to pay for their nursing care. So the primary payment available to Mt.

Hope is from Medicaid, the state assistance program. Medicaid payments simply do not cover the cost of the required care. This challenge

There is an average gap of $200 a day per resident between what the state reimburses and the actual cost of care, she said. “The Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb costs of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives,” she explained. “Mt. Hope has always aimed to be good stewards of its resources, managing them conservatively. This past year, Mt. Hope provided about $1.7 million in charitable nursing care.”

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will also highlight the recent sale of the Mt. Hope farmhouse, which supplies crucial funding support. “The sale of the Mt. Hope farmhouse property gives Mt. Hope the boost needed to meet our new cottage fundraising goal and begin the initial construction phase,” Wilson remarked. “Before the auction, we secured about half of the funds required for the new cottages’ total project goal. Building two new independent-living duplex cottages gives Mt. Hope an additional four first-floor, suite-style apartments. These independent living cottages will increase Mt. Hope’s revenue, ultimately helping to support the nursing home’s mission.”

Wilson also reflected on the site’s historical legacy. “This dynamic project marks the beginning of the first expansion of Mt. Hope since Ephrata Grace Point Church purchased the facility over 19 years ago,” she said. “In 1910, the Chiques congregation built the white frame Mt. Hope meetinghouse on Mt. Hope Home Road. Presently, this

After Chiques built a modern facility, Mt. Hope was used for special events until its 1965 sale to the Dunkard Brethren Church. In 1969, it became a church home, later sold to Ephrata Grace Point Church in 2006.

Ephrata Grace Point Church envisioned a community-focused care facility where no one goes unserved, offering nursing and rehabilitation services regardless of financial circumstances - a mission aligned with the legacy of the Dunkard Brethren Church Home.

The upcoming cottages are part of fulfilling that legacy. “By adding more cottages to our campus, it helps secure Mt. Hope’s mission of serving our community right here in Manheim,” Wilson said. “Our goal is to have the new cottages move-in ready by the first half of the new year 2026. This new construction will provide housing options for families and connect Mt. Hope to the local community like never before.”

She emphasized that when people attend events such as the summer picnic, their support of Mt. Hope is appreciated.

“Your contributions help us to continue to shine God’s light,” Wilson said. “We’re so grateful for generous gifts that bless Mt. Hope. Thank you for caring about our residents and their home.”

Preorders for the barbecue meal will be accepted through Sunday, June 15. Additional meals may be available the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to reserve a meal, contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mt hopenazarene.org.
