Over the past seven years, Lifecycles has helped young people ride the equivalent of more than four times around the Earth on their bicycles. “I track all the mileage of our local rides and our bigger trips, and we have now ridden more than 110,000 miles,” said Lee DeRemer, who runs Lifecycles with his wife, Marcie. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 and offers participants a chance to enjoy

une is strawberry season in Lancaster County, and Rissers Mennonite Church will celebrate with a strawberry social. The event will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. “We’ll have lawn games and kids’ activities like a pinata and bean bag toss, and we’ll have our playground open for kids to play on,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee. “We’ll serve a light supper, and then we’ll have a variety of strawberry desserts.” The social will also include two demonstrations, one on growing strawberries and one on making strawberry jelly. This is the first year the church is holding the strawberry social, said pastor Daryl Heistand, although the congregation has organized other community events in the past,

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager at Occupational Development Center (ODC), is just a little biased when he talks about the coffee he and other staff members chose to be ODC’s selection from Wanderlust Coffees. “It’s just a really good coffee - not too strong, not weak,” said Mueller, who now purchases the coffee beans in five-pound bags. “It’s the only coffee I drink now. It is so good.”

You can play the games and enjoy the activities, or you can just sit around, eat and talk. It will be a very laid-back, easygoing event.” He said events like the strawberry social are important to the church members, who want to connect with their neighbors. “It’s a time for the community to come out and get to know us,” he explained. “We care about the people around us, and we want to encourage being friendly and working together. The more we know each other as a community, the better our community becomes.” Rissers Mennonite Church holds services on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. with Sunday school for adults and children, followed by worship time at 10 a.m. For more information, call 717-653-4549.

including an apple festival. “We thought we’d try something new this year,” he noted. “ We planned it to happen just as strawberries are in peak season.” He emphasized that the demonstrations will be informative and educational. “We have people in our congregation who are avid gardeners, horticulturists really, and they will be doing a detailed demonstration of how to grow strawberries, including covering different varieties and cultivars,” he explained. “Many of the women in our church also make homemade jelly, so we thought it would be neat to do a demo about that as well. Not everybody has somebody in their family who makes jam or who has experience with making it, so this will be an opportunity to see how it’s done.” The strawberry social offers a chance to enjoy tasty treats and socialize, said Arlene. “It’s a great opportunity for people who have
friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. “We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. … We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing right, and we build on that.” Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams - one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month.

One hundred years ago, 16 men had an idea. They wanted to create an American Legion post in Marietta to honor veterans, and they had one particular person in mind to be its namesake. Marietta American Legion William Brenner Post 466 was founded on May 21, 1921, and was named for Brenner, a Marietta resident who joined the United States Army in 1917. Brenner’s unit was sent to France as part of the expeditionary force in World War I, and he was killed in action in northern France in June of 1918. Over the years, the Marietta Legion has grown not only in membership, but also in the scope of its service. Today, the post has more than 800 members and hosts four organizations under its umbrella: the Legionnaires, the Sons of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Legion Riders. “The William Brenner American Legion Post 466 has lasted 100 years due to the commitment of many volunteers out of the respect for our fallen and POW heroes,” said Steven Shireman, post financial officer and chair of the 100-year committee. “The commitment to not forget the sacrifices of those heroes is always upon the shoulders of the conservators of the organization. So, by that obligation, the volunteers must not fail. We as veterans understand and enjoy the freedoms we have today.” See Veterans pg 7

Mount Hope has a mission of providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay, Wilson noted, adding that the capital campaign will help the facility continue to fulfill this mission, as much of the facility has not been updated since the home was built in the late 1960s. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to make improvements to continue to provide quality care,” Wilson said. “Every person deserves a dignified, well-maintained place to live. Contributing to the capital campaign will allow the home to continue to provide this care.” As the capital campaign continues, the public is invited to a virtual celebration, “Upon This Firm Foundation … Continuing Our Vision,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16. A Zoom link will be available for the celebration at Mount Hope’s website beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the day of the event. Wilson said the celebration will include up-to-date information, personal testimonies of the care Mount Hope provides, an invitation and challenge to participate with a financial response and a vision for the future. “A challenge will be given to those participating in the virtual campaign celebration on how they may see themselves joining with Mt. Hope to ensure that this mission continues strong,” she stated. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to provide quality care for the long-term future.”

Matthew 25:40 emphasizes the importance of caring for “the least of these,” teaching that everyone deserves compassion. At Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, the least will be getting the most due to a capital campaign designed to continue to provide quality care and support to seniors. “In honor of Mount Hope’s 50th anniversary in June 2019, Mount Hope launched a capital campaign to address a dated facility that needs tender loving care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “We reached our halfway point with total donations and pledges coming in at just over $500,000. We are well on our way to the $1 million goal.” Help is still needed to reach the goal, she stated, which will allow the facility to upgrade its roof and parking lot area; improve public restrooms; update nursing stations and the therapy room; and renovate resident common gathering areas, such as two lounges and the dining hall. So far, 14 resident rooms have been renovated, with 29 still to be updated.

Mueller explained that the coffee is offered through a partnership with Wanderlust, which is run from a roasting facility on North Christian Street in Lancaster, by Timm, Kristina, and Thaniel Wenger. Before COVID19, Timm was overseeing a business that provided walking tours of ethnic restaurants in the city. “They had to shut (the tours) down due to COVID19 (restrictions),” recalled Mueller. “They decided to get into coffee roasting, and to partner with area nonprofits,” he added, noting that ODC was among the first nonprofits contacted by Wanderlust. Half a dozen ODC staff members taste-tested three coffee blends provided by Wanderlust. “We chose the one we wanted, and we chose the name,” said Mueller. Grounds for Suc-

When MJ Smith retires from her position as principal of Kraybill Mennonite School at the end of this month, she’ll be leaving behind a job that she’s loved, and one that she said has been an honor to have. “It has been really great to have been gifted with the privilege of serving here,” she said. “This school is a community that really supports the students and the teachers. It is a fantastic place. It’s not heaven, but it’s close.” Smith noted that her retirement is bittersweet. “I really enjoy seeing the children come to school in the morning, greeting them when they

I have stacks of books to read, projects around the house,” she said, noting that she is also eager to spend even more time with her grandchildren, who attend Donegal schools. Smith said her departure is made a little easier by knowing she’s leaving the school to a very capable educator. Janice Greenleaf will be taking the reins as the new principal. “I know Janice very well, and I feel extremely confident to have her come on,” Smith stated. Greenleaf, who has spent the past 12 years teaching at Lancaster Mennonite Middle School, is a former Kraybill parent and said that background makes her uniquely suited for her new job. “I have experienced this school both as a parent and as a substitute teacher,” explained Greenleaf, whose three children attended Kraybill. “There are not many places like Kraybill, with its support for everyone and the collaborative community.” See Kraybill pg 5

Ride from pg 1 “This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets and food for them. We provide a meal after each ride.” The organization is also looking for more volunteers. “If you would enjoy investing in a teenager, there are teenagers who need to have the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight
boys and five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they find out they can live through the experience,” he said with a laugh. In all seriousness, he noted that God has been present with Lifecycles since the beginning. “We have ridden safely for seven years,” he said. “That’s a miracle. The post celebrated its century mark with a formal ceremony on May 21. The event featured remarks from post commander Charles D. Shireman Sr., as well as a proclamation presented by Mayor Harold Kulman. Donegal High School student Ethan Steck performed the national anthem, and American Legion essay contest winner Myra Naqvi, also a Donegal High School student, was recognized. A time capsule was presented, containing letters full of history and advice from the presidents and commanders of Post 466 to their future counterparts. Shireman said the post has remained very active in the community since its inception. “We started a Hometown Hero banner program to recognize our veterans, and we are proud sponsors of the Marietta Memorial Day Parade committee,” he stated. “American Legion 466 sponsors a baseball field at the War Memorial Park. We support the
Marietta summer rec program by paying the entry fee for children of Marietta residents, and we support other community groups such as Pioneer Fire Company, Marietta Community House and the Marietta Historical Society.” Post members also support local Boy Scout troops, Donegal sports programs, Relay For Life and local food banks. Lady Bears Fall in District Semifinals to L-S BY ERIC PYLES

Sometimes in the world of sports a player or team continues to find the same opponent standing in the way of goals and aspirations. In the case of the Elizabethtown softball team, their nemesis for 2021 has been LampeterStrasburg. With an 8-2 setback on June 1st, the Lady Pioneers have dealt E-town four of their seven losses this season, all keeping the Lady Bears from big accomplishments. There were the two regular season setbacks that prevented a section title, an L-L title game loss and now that 8-2 District 3-5A semifinal loss that keeps E-town from a title shot. Despite an end result that left Elizabethtown wanting
more, the district game started well for E-town. The Lady Bears used small ball tactics to take a 1-0 lead coming out of their half of the first. Ava Fair coaxed a two-out walk from Keiva Middleton then moved herself into scoring position via a stolen base. The plan worked perfectly as Jess Zimmerman roped a double that pushed Fair across for that 1-0 lead. Zimmerman picked up a second hit with a leadoff double in the sixth, eventually working her way around to score off Sidney Stewart fielder’s choice but it was too little too late by that point. In between the two Lady Bear scores, LampeterStrasburg erupted for seven runs, meaning Zimmerman’s sixth inning score only shrank the deficit to 7-2. Kristin Geesey was in the circle for E-town, absorbing all 12 Lampeter-Strasburg hits and all eight of their runs, including the Daisy Frank solo shot in the sixth that set the 8-2 final. L-S was able to get to Geesey twice more, both from the bat of Chloe Blantz. The first was a three-run blast in the second that broke open the 1-1 deadlock. The second was a tworun homer in the third that highlighted Lampeter-Strasburg’s game sealing outburst. Geesey picked up three strikeouts to go with three walks. The Lady Bears earned that fourth showdown opposite L-S courtesy of a 4-0 win over previous-
ly unbeaten South Western on May 27th. Elizabethtown rode Geesey to the District 3-5A Quarterfinal win with the senior hurling a gem on the mound while also helping her own cause with a third inning blast. Geesey tossed all seven innings, allowing just two hits and two walks to go with her eight strikeouts. The result was just seven baserunners and three of them came from fielding errors including two that sparked a second inning scare. Geesey was able to work out of that jam with the third of her eight K’s coupled with a pop out to short. Geesey also helped her own cause, kicking off the top of the third with her only hit of the game, a solo shot that made it 2-0. The two-run lead was short lived as Zimmerman pushed it to 3-0 with help from a Lady Mustang error just three batters later. Zimmerman also pushed across the final Elizabethtown run with her fifth inning double that plated Ava Fair, giving the junior one hit and two RBIs on the day. Megan Gray opened the scoring back in the second, leading off the frame with a solo homer and a 1-0 lead. TRACK The track and field season came to a close on May 28th and 29th with one last trip to Shippensburg University for Madeline Quinn and Carly Sedun. The two seniors made the trek to Seth Grove Stadium for the

PIAA-3A Championship. Sedun captured the Lady Bears only medal by working her way into the discus finals where she uncorked a throw of 128-10 securing sixth with a personal best toss. Quinn qualified in both the 1600m and 3200m but opted out of the 3200m to concentrate on Saturday’s 1600m final. The moved paid off for Quinn with the senior posting a time of 5:18.93, good enough to finish 19th overall.

Chargers Claim Back-to-back CCAC Titles BY LEAH SINTIC
While the Chargers 2021 baseball season ended in the PIAA District III semi-finals on May 24th, the athletic year held a slew of accomplishments including a CCAC championship and a 15-2 overall record. The historic CCAC win made the Chargers back-to-back champs, maintaining possession of the banner to defend their 2019 title. The absence of a 2020 season made the club even more thankful for each moment they experienced on the field this year. The CCAC championship win came on May 17th in a 6-0 triumph over High Point Baptist held at Earl Wenger field in Fredericksburg. Senior pitcher Aidan Masters struck out a staggering 12 batters in the shut-out victory, surrendering zero runs and allowing just one hit and walking one, while throwing all seven innings. “Aidan’s command of the strike zone was excellent,” pointed out head coach Jim Sintic. “He was able to work ahead in the count and it allowed him to showcase his change-up and slider.”
Offensively, the Chargers accrued five hits, supplied by Hunter Stewart, Damian Rutt, Reagan Mummau, Evan Barnes, and Ethan Smith. Mount Calvary’s first two runs crossed the plate in the second inning when a single from Mummau drove in Rutt. Up next, Barnes crushed a double to score Mummau. The subsequent and final surge of runs came in the fifth frame when heads up base running allowed the Chargers to score Wyatt Lamb on a sacrifice fly, followed by runs from Stewart and Masters who capitalized on a High Point error. “As a team we played solid defense behind Aidan’s pitching and had great at bats that allowed us to control the game early on,” reflected Sintic. “I was extremely proud of the way we played as we demonstrated this year’s theme to ‘Be Relentless’ in the way we played.” A week later, the Chargers were handed their first defeat after a 15-game win streak, a 6-5 loss to eventual District III champs, Greenwood High School in the district semifinal showdown. A 14-1 regular season record started out with the Chargers’ lone regular season defeat, an 8-6 loss to Upper Dauphin Area High School. The close loss spurred a Chargers’ rally that claimed their next 15 games, including wins over SteeltonHighspire (15-0), Trinity (10-2), York Catholic (7-5), and Pequea Valley (63) in the early season. “After losing our first game of the season we knew what we needed to do to be successful. As the season progressed, we were able to get great pitching and solid contributions up and down our line up,” explained the coach. The club faced off with conference runner-up, High Point Baptist, a total of three times in 2021, twice
14 Charger RBIs with a batting average of .412 and produced pivotal hits in key, high-pressured situations throughout the season. I. Shaeffer contributed as both a solid catcher and clean-up hitter. Thirteen of his season total 24 RBIs came with two outs. Rutt anchored the team defense in the outfield with a nearly flawless record in center field, while also coming up big on offense, including three home runs this season. “Our seniors will be missed not only for the contributions on the field, but even more for their contribution off of it,” summarized Sintic. “They provided spiritual and emotion leadership, and it has been an absolute joy coaching them. As they move on from here, I would encourage them to ‘Be Relentless’ in the way they face life and more importantly as they pursue a relationship with their Savior.”

Despite three Charger runs in the bottom half of the frame to bring the game within one, the MC club was unable to secure the tying run. A double from Mummau scored the final pair of Mount Calvary runs during the final at bat, but the Greenwood defense was able to retire the side leaving Mummau stranded at second at the game’s conclusion. Masters started out on the mound and lasted three innings, and Stewart pitched four innings in relief, sitting down four Greenwood batters and walking one while allowing zero earned runs. Masters, Isaiah Shaeffer, and Barnes each had multiple hits, with

Masters, who has signed to continue his baseball career at Division I, Mount Saint Mary’s, led the team at the plate driving in 29 RBIs, scoring 29 runs, and hitting for an average of .574.
