Get Ready for a Berry Fun Time

“If you’re looking for smalltown vibes and activities in a big-fair environment with a balance of lots to do in a chill and laid-back setting, this event is a must-do,” said Tony Gibble of LIV-Etown, describing the organization’s Strawberry Social. “This year it’s on Father’s Day, and it will be the perfect way to spend a day with Dad or spend a day in remembrance.”

The fifth annual Strawberry Social: A Picnic in the Park will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, at Elizabethtown Borough Community Park, located at 201 S. Mount Joy St.

“The Strawberry Social has grown to be one of E-town’s

biggest local events,” said Clint Gibble of LIV-Etown. “It’s a free community event where our guests are encouraged to wear as much red and strawberry-themed clothes as they can and are

invited to spend an afternoon at E-town’s beautiful park enjoying a community picnic.”

The festivities will include live entertainment, food trucks, a maker’s market, free bounce

houses for kids to explore, free activities and games, prizes, a dog fashion show and lots more.

A Strawberry Princess will be crowned, and a variety of games will be available for a nominal charge, with the proceeds benefiting local organizations and a prize guaranteed for all players. Ross Productions will serve as DJ. A pie and cupcake eating contest sponsored by Myers Advantage Realty will also be part of the celebration.

Additional activities will include face painting by donation, free strawberry ice cream by Figments in Sprinkles, a free strawberry candy buffet by the Candy Unicornium, free chocolate-covered strawberries from Mars Wrigley and Masonic Village

Before the Revolutionary War, when the United States had not yet formed, a small church began in Elizabethtown. The earliest members met in homes, and the first deed was delivered to the church in 1775. Now, 250 years later, Rissers Mennonite Church will mark its milestone anniversary with a celebration on Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15.

“God has been faithful in sustaining the church all these years, and we celebrate His goodness,”

said Arlene Heistand, a member of the celebration planning committee. “Families have come and gone over the years, but the congregation is still here, vibrant and alive, and continues to love and serve God.”

The celebration will take place at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. The weekend will kick off with a bus tour of local historical sites, with stories and facts along the way presented by Lloyd M. Weiler, director of Muddy Run Library, a Mennonite research library and archives located in Ephrata.

People looking for fellowship and opportunities to grow in faith are invited to check out The Bridge Church, now open at 149 Race St., Bainbridge.

“Our tagline is ‘Meet Me at The Bridge,’” said Jim Bush, who serves as pastor with his wife, Michelle. “With our move to Bainbridge, we wanted to affirm our commitment to reaching the community. Just like Jesus is the bridge between man and

God, we want to be the bridge between our community and Jesus.”

The Bridge Church may be new, but it has a strong foundation.

“We were a church plant of Activ8 Lancaster Church, now Legacy Church,” said Jim, who noted that the local branch was originally called Activ8 Etown Church. “We are a part of the In the Light Fellowship, which started in Lancaster and now has nearly 30 churches throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey,

In 2022, the church began in Elizabethtown with a monthly worship night at Cornerstone Youth Center, where Jim is the executive director, but soon expanded to weekly services.

“(We) began meeting weekly at Cornerstone on Sunday mornings in September of 2023,” he shared. “We outgrew our space there and began praying about another location in the spring of 2024.”

We were able to secure the building on Good Friday and had our first service on Easter Sunday. Then, we moved our service to the basement for the next few weeks until renovations to the sanctuary were completed. We are now meeting in the sanctuary and are beginning renovations to the rest of the building.”

As Jim explained, the church strives to offer something for everyone.

Church members noticed the building on Race Street almost two years ago and began praying specifically that if God wanted them to serve, He would open the door to opportunity in the space.

“Since that time, many people have mentioned the building to us, but as a small congregation, we didn’t think we could financially afford to purchase the building,” Jim commented. “However, God had another plan and made the finances available to us in early April.

“We are a nondenominational, Bible-teaching, Spirit-filled, come-asyou-are, love-to-worship, believe-in-the-power-ofprayer, love-each-other, reach-the-community, disciple-making kind of church!” he said.

To connect with the community and spread its message of love, the church will hold the Bridge Block Party on Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We will have free foodhot dogs, chips and drinks - in the church fellowship hall, popcorn and snow cones outside,” Jim said. “We will have games and activities for the kids - a bouncy house and face painting - giveaways and … prizes for everyone, cornhole and nine-square games, as well as worship

Festivities will take place inside the church as well as in the church parking lot. Parking will be available at the Bainbridge Fire Company lot on Second Street.

“We want to invite the community to join us for fun, food and fellowship on Saturday,” Jim commented. “We want to get to know our neighbors and learn about how we can best serve the people of Bainbridge. Our heart is to serve the community, and we want to get to know you!”

On Sunday, June 8, the church will hold a dedication service at 10 a.m., with Jim presiding.

“There will be a special testimony from members of The Way Church in San Bernadino, Calif., who are joining us to share their

experiences in community building and outreach,” he said. “The main message will be given by pastor Phil Hernandez, founder of In the Light Ministries, and a prayer of dedication by pastor Jose Jimenez of Legacy Church.”

The Bridge Church hosts coffee and fellowship on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Worship begins at 10 a.m. Youth group for students in grades seven through 12 meets on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m.

“We also have Discipleship Dinners on Wednesdays at 6:30,” Jim said. “We have a meal together and study Scripture. We provide the main course, and people can bring side dishes if they choose. We always have enough for everyone, and everyone is welcome.”

Jim hopes anyone who is interested in learning more will come to the block party or a Sunday service.

“We are a church that is genuine and loving,” he said. “We care about people and want to make a lasting impact on their lives and believe that the greatest impact we can make is to introduce people to Jesus. We are not perfect. We don’t expect you to be.”

The bus tour is sold out, but people are invited to a light meal after the tour, as well as an opportunity to enjoy fellowship and view displays of photos and artifacts. The meal will be served at 5 p.m. on June 14, and it will be followed by the first session of the weekend.

“Each session will have special music, and a family who was involved at Rissers will be highlighted,” Arlene explained. Session one will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday and will feature song leader Merle Ressler with special music by German singers.

Steven M. Nolt will be the speaker for the first session. He is a professor of history at Elizabethtown College and senior scholar at the college’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. He is the author or co-author

of 15 books on Mennonite, Amish and Pennsylvania German history. He will speak on “Lillian Risser, the Pennsylvania Garb Law and the Free Exercise of Anabaptist Religion 1908-1910.”

On June 15, Sunday school classes for children and adults will be held at 9 a.m., followed by piano prelude music at 9:50 a.m. and session two, featuring music by song leaders Brad and Mary Barrows at 10 a.m. The speakers for session two will be Daryl Heistand, pastor of Rissers Mennonite Church, and Lloyd Weiler. They will discuss “1525-1775 - 250 Years of Stories Leading Up to Rissers Mennonite Church.” A fellowship meal at the church will follow the session and will be served at noon.

At 7 p.m. on Sunday, session three will feature song

leader James Zimmerman and special music by his family. Lloyd Weiler will speak on “1775-2025 - 250 Years of Stories From Rissers Mennonite Church.”

“People should come to all three sessions as there will be new info presented at each one,” Arlene shared.

Linda Umbrell, a member of the planning committee, published a book about the Risser family and the church. She traced her family’s history back to the 1680s and noted that remembering the past is important for informing the future.

“The present makes sense only through the eyes of the past,” she said. “Our ancestors gave

of themselves to further the cause of humanity. We should honor those who came before us for their vision, courage and dedication.”

Daryl emphasized the 250th anniversary celebration provides a way to learn more about the church and the community’s history.

“There will be lots of stories as well as the opportunity to dialogue with others regarding the past, present and future God has for us,” he said. “Rissers exists to worship and give glory to God by loving God and loving others. Our desire is to show that in everything we do, including this 250th celebration. We’d love to see you there.”

abethtown downtown area.

LIV, an acronym for “local interactive vitality,” started the Strawberry Social to support that vision. It’s one of the few events the organization holds outside the downtown area, Clint said.

“LIV’s goal is to encourage a spirited interaction between the community and its businesses through a hands-on approach where fun and being a part of it is encouraged at every turn,” he stated. “LIV, with its yearly

support from Mars Wrigley, the DDMP, Myers Advantage Realty, Discover Elizabethtown and Cornerstone Tax Service, serves to unite the local community and surrounding communities and businesses in a dynamic, free and low-cost way, so that all are welcome and encouraged to be part of the fun. That is what community is about!”

An upcoming bike tour with the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward program will highlight the watersheds of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. The “Waterways on Wheels: A Bike Tour” workshop will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta.

The workshop is designed for community members who wish to participate in an event during Lancaster Water Week; people who love the outdoors, enjoy biking and want to learn more about the watersheds they live in; and anyone interested in riparian forest

buffers, the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay watershed or contributing to conservation and restoration efforts in the watershed.

The workshop will cover the history of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and the Lower Susquehanna River, riparian forest buffer programs and benefits, how to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and how individuals can help make community watersheds more sustainable.

The Master Watershed Steward program, in partnership with the Lancaster Conservancy, offers the bike tour to highlight various watershed features, trail history and geological

history on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

The bike tour is an outand-back ride from the East Donegal Riverfront Park to the Fisherman’s Wharf Trail access at the northern terminus in Falmouth. The trail is 100% paved, and the total distance is approximately 15 miles, including stops along the way and a water break.

The journey will run about 2.5 to 3 hours. Helmets are required, and any type of bike is permitted, including road, mountain or gravel. Participants should bring water.

Parking and restroom facilities will be available. Upon returning to the East Donegal Riverfront Park, attendees can enjoy some of Lancaster County’s finest snack items and reflect on the experience.

Waterways on Wheels is an educational program of the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward program. It brings bike riders to the intersection of history and the watershed in immersive natural environments via casual bike rides designed to be fun and educational.

Lancaster Water Week, which will run from Saturday, June 7, through Sunday, June 15, celebrates the 1,400 miles of streams and rivers in Lancaster County. During the week, individuals can explore, volunteer and take action to protect local waterways.

Participants can register for the bike tour through Tuesday, June 10, for a fee. More information is available at www.extension.psu .edu/waterways-on-wheels -a-bike-tour.
