Berry Big Fun in the Park
BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“This is a sweet summer tradition filled with delicious strawberry treats, great conversation and a warm community spirit,” said Tony Gibble, describing the LIV-Etown Strawberry Social. “Whether you come for the desserts, the fellowship or simply a relaxing afternoon with friends and neighbors, there’s something for everyone.”

The sixth annual Strawberry Social will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, at Elizabethtown Borough Community Park, 201 S. Mount Joy St. It will feature live music; numerous games hosted by local organizations, including the Elizabethown Moose Lodge 596/701; free chocolatecovered strawberries provided by Mars Wrigley and Masonic Village Farm Market; and a pie-eating contest hosted by Lethea Myers of
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. A variety of food trucks, including Mocha Motion, Tri-County BBQ, The Donut Guys and East Coast Eatery, will offer tasty treats.
A Strawberry Princess will be crowned, and The Tatted Toy Guys will host a Candy and Toy Toss. Free ice cream will be provided by Figments in Sprinkles while supplies last.
A 60-foot obstacle bounce house, sponsored by Elizabethtown Heating and Cooling, will provide fun for people of all ages, while a magician and other entertainers will also be on-site for the festival.
“The amphitheater stage will be hosted by DJ Jimmy Jam with stage entertainment of Elijah and Esther Myers, E-Dance Center and ExHaLTT Performing Arts

Celebrating Lancaster Water Week Riding

BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Hop on your bike or just come out and enjoy the scenery when Brittany’s Hope hosts the fifth annual Biking for Brittany. The event will take place on Sunday, June 28, with rides beginning and ending at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The first ride will take off at 6:30 a.m., followed by additional starts at 7 and 7:30 a.m.
“There are three events to challenge all levels of riders: The Metric Century (62 miles), Mid-Distance (45 miles) and Metric Half Century (34 miles),” said Dana Myers, director of
BY
More than a decade ago, Fritz Schroeder was paddling on the Conestoga River when he realized something. The now president and CEO of Lancaster Conservancy saw the challenges facing the waterway but also its great potential to become a thriving place for wildlife and recreation.
Lancaster Water Week grew out of that experience, and the event will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year from Friday, June 5, through Saturday, June 13.
“We have over 60 events hosted by more than 40 partners,” said Avery Van Etten, marketing and communications manager for Lancaster Conservancy. “There are so many events that no matter what you’re interested in, whether it’s paddling or hiking, taking a rain garden workshop, participating in an art event or other activities, there are so many ways for everyone to get involved.”
Highlights of Lancaster Water Week include First Friday in downtown Lancaster on June 5, when people can pick up free native plants or seeds and enjoy immersive activities hosted by organizations working in the clean water movement.
On Tuesday, June 9, a 10th anniversary event will be held at West Art, 816 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster, from 5 to 8 p.m.
“This is an opportunity to connect with members of our clean water community and enjoy water-themed games, arts and crafts and activities,” Van Etten said. “West Art’s café will be open, and we’ll have a food truck and ice cream. And then around 6:30 p.m. we’ll have a

charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Riders will take off from the beautiful Star Barn and follow one of three awesome routes and will travel through the rolling hills and picturesque landscapes of Elizabethtown, Hershey and surrounding counties.”
After the ride, everyone is invited to celebrate at the Star Barn.

“Enjoy a fun post-ride celebration featuring burgers and hot dogs on the grill, ice cream, music and a few great cycling-related vendors,” Myers said. “Biking for Brittany is not a timed ride, so you can enjoy the experience your way. From e-bikes to race bikes, all are welcome!”
Myers explained that now-committee co-chair and avid cyclist Molly Stager suggested the fundraiser a few years ago.
“At the time, we did the Walk of Love and a cross-country 5K,” Myers recalled. “Molly assured us that the bike ride would introduce us to an entirely new market, which was true, and that hosting a bike event is super easy - which is not exactly true, but we have an awesome committee.”
Proceeds from Biking for Brittany will help Brittany’s Hope continue its mission of aiding orphaned and abandoned children through adoption grants and humanitarian support for the organization’s partner children’s homes in Vietnam, Kenya and Ethiopia.

“We are working to solve the orphan crisis at its roots by educating students to have profitable careers which will help to break the cycle of generational poverty and by providing homes to homeless families who feel desperate to provide a better life

“Homes, which can be built for $6,000, allow loving parents to care for their children and have the family remain together.”
Biking for Brittany relies on support from sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor Mars, as well as The North Group and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding. It also requires a team of people to pull off a successful event, Myers said.
“This committee is composed of experienced, knowledgeable riders who understand how to put on an
amazing ride,” she stated. “They work hard - creating and marking the course, even clearing debris and trees from the course the day before the ride. We would never attempt to put on a ride of this magnitude without them. They’re phenomenal.” Event co-chairs are Molly Stager and Jamie Clinton, and committee members are Bill Coyne, Joe Ruiz, Roger Rabey, David Sonner, Charlie Olmstead, Dave Wilson, Deb Nissley, Gale Hess, Bob Turner and Shane Cranford.
Myers added that Biking for Brittany always receives positive feedback from both participants and spectators.
“For riders, we continually hear that this ride is the best ride people have ever ridden. Comments include, ‘The location and routes are beautiful’ and ‘Everyone is just so nice,’” she said. “And of course, what better cause than to support orphaned and abandoned children! For spectators, it would be great for local people to check out the

routes at https://brittanyshope .org/events/biking-for-brittany and cheer riders on along the way and to cheer them on at the finish at the Star Barn. They’d love that. Also, we have the best after party around. And the best part is, everything is donated.”
Online registration for Biking for Brittany will end at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, but on-site registration will begin at 6 a.m. on June 28. For more information, visit the aforementioned website.

Gardens and History Bloom in Marietta
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Buy a ticket for the Marietta Garden Tour and discover a unique tribute to America: a pool shaped like the Liberty Bell. It’s among the unusual and inspiring sights featured on the tour, set for Sunday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The tour will highlight eight stops in and around Marietta, including private homes; a bed and breakfast; and a site on Donegal Place at Furnace Road, where the Musselman/ Vesta Furnace was built in 1868.
The building and grounds used to be managed by Lancaster County, but the site was recently transferred to Marietta, making it an ideal spot to showcase on the tour, said tour organizer Karen Sullivan.

Volunteers with Marietta Restoration Associations and Rivertownes PA USA have restored the office, which displays various artifacts. Tourgoers can also stroll through shaded gardens and view the ruins of the last of eight anthracite-fired hot blast furnaces built between Marietta and Columbia.
“Across the street used to be an open field, but now it’s been seeded with wildflowers,” Sullivan said. “I can’t guarantee they’ll be blooming

at that time, but they are beautiful when they do bloom, and people can visit there any time. We have suggested for the tour that people walk down to the Susquehanna River. You can see Chickies Rock and the two bridges from there.”
Several of the stops on the garden tour have never been featured before, including a home at 609 W. Market St. This site features native plants, edible herbs and berries and a rock garden with numerous varieties of Japanese maple trees. Other homes feature color hydrangeas, majestic mature trees, flowering plants and numerous types of roses.
The home with the Liberty Bell pool, located at 81 N. Bank St., is a Georgian farmhouse that was built in 1764.
“It’s one of the oldest buildings in Marietta, if not the oldest,” Sullivan said. The garden features elm and black walnut trees and an outhouse repurposed as a garden shed.
Along with the gardens, the tour will feature two seminars at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. Members of the Susquehanna Herb Guild will lead programs on “Herbs and Their Many Uses” at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. The cost of the seminars is included in the tour ticket price.
The Marietta Community House will also host a pork barbecue meal, featuring a sandwich, chips, baked beans, a cookie and a drink. Meals will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and Sullivan recommends coming early, as the meals always sell out.

First National Coffee and Coworking, located at 100 W. Market St. inside a historic bank, will be open for a tour rest stop, and people are invited to enjoy refreshments at Mulberry Thrill, located at the rear of the building.
Proceeds from the tour benefit the preservation of the Marietta Community House, which includes two buildings and hosts a variety of events at the site.
Sullivan noted that the garden tour requires support from a large committee of volunteers who serve on the Community House board.
“I’d like to express my thanks and gratitude for their help,” she said. “It takes a team to do all of this.”
She encourages people to come to the garden tour to see the creativity of Marietta residents and walk away inspired.
“It’s great for getting ideas for your own yard,” she said. “I think most people who come like the tour for that reason, but there’s also the historic nature of Marietta itself and the houses on the tour - that’s a big draw.”
Advance tickets are available for a discount until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 5. They may be purchased at Mulberry Thrill; Floral Designs of Mount Joy, 1599 W. Main St., Mount Joy; River Road Produce, 1835 River Road, Marietta; and Murphy’s Mercantile and Co., 261 Locust St., Columbia. Full-price tickets will be available at the Marietta Community House on the day of the event. The tour will be held rain or shine.

and we’ll wrap up with a DJ dance party with DJ Image.”
Other highlights include a creek stomp on Wednesday, June 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stauffer Run stream at Greenfield, starting at the S. Dale High Leadership Center, 1861 William Penn Way, Lancaster.
“This is a super fun event that’s geared especially toward families with children,”Van Etten said.
Also on June 10, from 4 to 6 p.m., people are invited to explore a new self-guided nature trail sponsored by Eurofins on one of its campus green spaces, located at 2430 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.
On Thursday, June 11, Lancaster City Stormwater staff will lead a tour of the newly installed wetland system at Long’s Park, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. That same day, from 4 to 5 p.m., tours of the Lititz Borough Wastewater Treatment Plant will be offered.
On June 13, conservation specialists RiverStewards Collaborative and LandStudies will join the Conestoga-Susquehannock Tribe and Circle Legacy Center to present “Weaving Indigenous Perspectives into Local Conservation and Restoration.” The program will take place at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Another highlight of the week will be the Rally for the River & Conestoga Cleanup on June 13 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will meet at Lancaster County Central Park and then head out to volunteer with the

Academy,” shared Clint Gibble of LIV-Etown.
The Strawberry Social will also include a Makers Market, featuring Lichen & Limestone, Tranquil Tails, The Balunguy and Vapor Artistry, among others. Furry friends will be invited to participate in the Berry Paws Couture Fashion Show as well as the Berry Sweet Peanut Butter Challenge for Dogs. The event will wrap up with The Tatted Toy Guys’ Ultimate Water

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and partners at multiple spots along the Conestoga River.
“This is an especially exciting event because the Conestoga was recently named Pennsylvania’s River of the Year,” Van Etten said, explaining that the public voted for the river through the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers. “There are just so many things to do during Water Week. It’s an engaging and energizing, fun week.”
Caring for Lancaster County’s streams and rivers is important, she said, because these waterways are places for recreation and homes for wildlife. They provide sources of drinking water as well, but according to the Pennsylvania Integrated Water Quality Report for 2026, more than 90% of the 1,400 miles of streams and rivers in the county are considered “impaired.”
“We see this as a challenge but also as an opportunity to care for our waterways,” Van Etten said. “Improving our waterways is a daunting task, but it’s something we can achieve.”
Along with participating in Water Week activities, people are encouraged to take three action steps promoted by the Lancaster Conservancy. They include creating habitats by
Battle Royale.
“Everything is bigger this year,” said Tony. “Enjoy even more vendors in the makers market, plus, in addition to the dog fashion show, check out the brand-new ‘Paws in the Patch,’ a mini market area just for dogs and their humans.” Sponsors of the fashion show and Paws in the Patch are the Pet Care Club of Central PA, Tranquil Tails Wellness and Playful Pups Retreat.
The Strawberry Social is organized by LIV-Etown and sponsored by Ryan Homes: Bear Creek Estates and
planting native plants, protecting water by learning about your local watershed, and exploring the outdoors.
“We believe that when people explore our waterways and our natural lands, they will fall in love with them and want to help take care of them,”Van Etten said.
Lancaster Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust charged with protecting more than 11,000 acres of natural land, including more than 50 nature preserves in Lancaster and York counties and more than 60 miles of trails. People can support the organization by participating in educational events throughout the year, volunteering with the group or donating to the cause.
As she gears up for Water Week, Van Etten expressed gratitude for the collaborative nature of the event.
“We are so grateful for the incredible partners and sponsors that make Water Week possible and all the community members that join us for events during Water Week,” she said. “Without these, Water Week wouldn’t happen.”
