When Mount Joy holds its annual Memorial Day parade, the event will have extra-special meaning this year. It will mark not only the 250th birthday of America but also the 175th anniversary of the town’s founding. With a theme of “Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom,” the parade will be held on Saturday, May 23, beginning at 2 p.m. It will travel along Main Street in Mount Joy from Angle Street to Barbara Street. Main Street will close to traffic at noon to prepare for the parade.
“The Mount Joy parade has become the largest and best-known Memorial Day parade in Lancaster County,” said John Coleman, a member of the event committee. “With its origin in the late 1800s, it has a long tradition of providing a fitting remembrance to those men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms which we enjoy. This year is even more special, with our country celebrating 250 years and our town celebrating 175 years.”
The parade will be led by grand marshal Herb Ridyard. A World War II veteran, Ridyard is a former engineer and a longtime community volunteer. He earned engineering degrees from Lehigh University and the University of Virginia and continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Ridyard enlisted at 17, serving with the 94th Infantry Division under
General Patton in Europe, where he earned the Bronze Star for Valor and Combat Infantry Badge. He later worked for NASA and General Electric on aeronautics and missile systems. Married 75 years to Nancy Lou, he is a father, grandfather and great-grandfather who remains active in church, veterans groups and community life in Elizabethtown, where he currently resides at Masonic Village. He has written two books, “Do Your Best,” about his boyhood through his World War II experiences, and “Dreams Do Come True,” about his life since the war.
Coleman emphasized that the success of the Mount Joy Memorial Day parade relies on support from the community.
“With this support, we have been able to recruit 12 bands to be in our parade, which is even more than last year,” he stated. “These include the Donegal High School marching band and the Donegal Alumni Band, as well as many others from previous years. We were also able to recruit the Ferko String Band from Philadelphia, Keystone Regiment Drum and Bugle Corp of Hope Fire Company in Northern Cambria, and new for this year is the New Holland Band.”
He noted that the Keystone Regiment will play for the crowd before the parade, traveling in the reverse direction of the parade route, and he encouraged people to come early to

see the band in action.
The committee will also award prizes for the best floats in the parade. Joining Coleman on the committee are Denny Brandt, Chris Brandt, Josh Deering and Brenda Kready.
Along with thanking the community for their continued support of the parade, Coleman noted that the parade committee is also grateful for the support of parade sponsors.
“Our major sponsor for a fourth year in a row is Houseal Plumbing. Our major sponsor for music to help with the cost of the bands is Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning for a second year in a row,” according to Coleman, who added that each of the

10 divisions in the parade has its own sponsor. The sponsors are Berkshire Hathaway-Denny Brandt, Hearing & Ear Care Center, Hershey Heating & Air Conditioning, SM Johns & Son Construction, Sheetz Funeral Home, Keystone Lawn Company, Berkshire Hathaway-Ferne Silberman & Rose Madar, Keystone Pest Control, Rotary Club of Mount Joy and Leaps & Bounds Heating and Cooling. These sponsors are imperative for ensuring the parade continues each year, he said, adding, “The support from these and other local businesses is crucial as they are the only source of funding for the parade, which costs around $20,000 to put on.”

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 30, and share food and fellowship at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.
The nonprofit invites the public to a Gather & Grill Summer Barbecue Picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. on the campus, 3026 Mt. Hope Home Road, Manheim.
The Gather & Grill catered meal will include charcoal fire-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, creamy homestyle baked macaroni and cheese, savory baked beans and fudgy brownies. Guests can make their own brownie sundaes with vanilla, black raspberry or twist soft-serve ice cream, complete with assorted toppings. A variety of drinks will be provided.
Along with the meal, the festivities will include yard games, activities for children and prizes for kids of all ages.
During the picnic, Mt. Hope will celebrate its 57th birthday, which is on Tuesday, June 2.
“Information will be shared about LOVEMTHOPE Day, which occurs on June 2,” explained Kris Wilson, director of advancement.
“This day is an opportunity for you to show your love and support for the high-quality, five-star-rated care provided by our team every day. On June 2, you are invited to participate in a special birthday giving celebration for Mt. Hope, where several anonymous donors have pledged to match dollar-for-dollar up to $12,500 raised during this 24-hour LOVEMTHOPE Giving Day.”
Wilson encourages people to attend the barbecue and support the ongoing work and ministry of Mt. Hope. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit benevolent care at the home and the ongoing needs of its residents.
The day will also celebrate the completion of new independent living cottages on the campus.
“The addition of these cottages reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to serving seniors
and individuals with disabilities, many of whom live on limited or fixed incomes,” Wilson explained.
Located in Rapho Township, Mt. Hope is home to 50 nursing care residents who rely on the facility for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services, as well as those residing in the six current independent suite-style, firstfloor-living apartments.
“It was one year ago during the summer picnic that we celebrated the beginning of our new cottage building endeavor with a special groundbreaking ceremony,” Wilson said. “It feels fitting to celebrate the completion of the independent living cottages at this year’s summer picnic. We are excited to welcome four new families who will be able to move into the newly completed cottages in May.”
The construction of two new independent living duplex cottages adds four first-floor, suitestyle apartments to Mt. Hope. These cottages will increase Mt. Hope’s revenue, ultimately helping
to support the nursing home’s mission, Wilson said.
“Most of our residents do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care - 80% of our residents cannot afford to pay for their nursing care,” she said.
“Therefore, the primary source of funding for Mt. Hope is Medicaid, the state assistance program.”
She explained that a gap of almost $200 per day per resident exists between what the state reimburses and the actual cost of care for residents on state assistance.
“This Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb the costs of providing benevolent care without seeking other alternatives to offset rising expenses and continuing our creative fundraising initiatives,” Wilson said. “Mt. Hope has always aimed to be good stewards of its resources, managing them

GEARS will offer activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www.getinto gears.org or call 717-367-0355. Chair Yoga will be offered on Wednesdays, June 10 to July 22, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the fitness room at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. Using the support of a chair, attendees will practice yoga movements from a
seated or standing position. The class is open to people age 14 and older and is designed to be accessible for all.
Power Yoga Flow will be held on Wednesdays, June 10 to Aug. 12, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic Village Carpenter Chapel, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. There will be no class on June 24 and Aug. 5. Participants should bring a yoga mat, and a strap and block are optional. The class is for people age 16 and older.
Chemistry Camp, for kids age 9 to 14, will be held from Monday to Thursday, June 8 to 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in room 2605 at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Guided by EAHS chemistry teacher Scott Baylor, participants will investigate what a chemical reaction looks, sounds, smells, and feels like; make their own slime and a reverse tie-dyed shirt; learn about acids and bases; and solve a mystery.

conservatively. For over 57 years, Mt. Hope has been dedicated to providing charitable care to those in need. We have built a great reputation in the local community for offering excellent, affordable care in a friendly, familylike environment, thanks to our wonderful and loving staff.”
She thanked the donors, families and organizations that have partnered with Mt. Hope to make the vision for the cottages a reality and to ensure that financial concerns are not a barrier to receiving care.
“Your contributions help us continue to shine God’s light,” she said. “We are so grateful for the
generous gifts that bless Mt. Hope. Thank you for caring about our residents and their homes.”
The Gather & Grill Summer Barbecue Picnic will be held rain or shine. Seating will be available under a large tent, but people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. There is a suggested donation per meal for the event, and reservations are requested by Saturday, May 23. To reserve a meal, email Wilson at advance ment@mthopenazarene.org or call 717-682-8026.

The festivities will begin with the annual Antique, Crafts and Collectibles Show, starting at 8 a.m. The show, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, will be set up on East High Street and around the Maytown square, located at the intersection of High Street and Maytown Road.
At 1 p.m., children and families are invited to participate in decorating the graves of local veterans with flowers provided by Floral Designs of Mount Joy. Anyone who wants to help should meet at the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St. After decorating the graves in the Reformed Church cemetery, the group will walk to the Lutheran and Union cemeteries at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., to decorate graves of veterans there.
“We have three cemeteries in town and lay approximately 300 roses donated by Floral Designs on veterans’ graves,” said Janie Garber, president of the Maytown Memorial Day committee. “The Bainbridge Band plays several songs at each cemetery.” She added that participants are given brief instructions to lay the flowers and say the name of the veteran out loud in recognition of their service.
At 4 p.m., a Memorial Day parade will kick off at Legion Park, 114 N. King St. The parade will travel down West High Street to Eleanor Drive, continue to Vista Drive to Elizabeth
Street, turn onto South River Street and travel through the square before heading back to Legion Park.
“This year’s theme is ‘250 Years Honor the Fallen,’” Garber said. “The parade committee has encouraged all participants to recognize their entries with the nation’s 250 celebration.”
The grand marshal’s car will lead the parade and will only have a driver.
“This year our grand marshal will be Sara Gutshall, who we are posthumously honoring for all she did for the Maytown community and the veterans she cared for,” Garber said.
A lifelong resident of Maytown and longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Gutshall was instrumental in numerous beautification projects in the Maytown square and took an active role in supporting local veterans. She passed away in August of last year at the age of 86.
Describing the parade, Garber said, “We will have six bands, 10 floats, a veterans’ float, marching units, dignitaries, antique cars, Corvettes, local businesses and fire companies. The parade will be led by a Susquehanna Police cruiser and color guard from the Elizabethtown Area High School Navy National Defense Cadet Corps.”
The Maytown Memorial Day committee currently includes nine members.
“We meet five times a year and would like to invite anyone to join us if you are interested,” Garber said.
She encourages everyone to come out and spend Memorial Day in Maytown, adding, “The parade is to honor those who lost their lives for our freedom but also recognizes the ones who have served so we can live freely in America.”

WINDOW CLEANING 717-876-0776 | windowcleanse.net
camper’s skills - dance, vocal, acting - overall theater knowledge, performance quality, all in a funfilled, positive environment,” said Jill Thomasson, founder and artistic director. “The rapport among the cast is built through hard work, encouragement, rehearsal process and team building throughout the week(s).”

All of the campers participate in the public performances. “Annie KIDS” currently has 47 students enrolled, and “High School Musical Jr.” has 33. Thomasson noted that she’d love to include a few more boys in the latter show.
Based on the classic Broadway musical, “Annie KIDS” follows optimistic orphan Annie as she escapes a cruel orphanage, befriends billionaire Oliver Warbucks and searches for her parents. Along the way, she inspires everyone she meets with her courage, kindness and positive attitude.
“High School Musical Jr.” follows two students as they challenge cliques and expectations by auditioning for the school musical. Alongside their friends, the students learn about friendship, teamwork and staying true to themselves. Featuring upbeat songs and energetic dance numbers, the show celebrates confidence, acceptance and following your dreams.
This is the fourth year ExHaLTT has

offered the summer intensive. The program fits nicely within the organization’s mission, Thomasson said.
“ExHaLTT stands for ‘Expressing Hearts and Lives To Touch.’ We are a faith-based, nonprofit, 501(c) (3), performing arts academy in the center of Elizabethtown,” she shared. “We offer student scholarships for families who may need tuition assistance through our tax-deductible donations from generous donors. We participate in numerous community events under the umbrella of ‘Dancers Make a Difference’ and look forward to our first global missions trip in the summer of 2027 with the host organization Christ for the City International.”
The organization’s yearly curriculum includes ballet, tap, modern, lyrical/contemporary, hip hop, musical theater and vocal (choral) instruction for people age 3 through adult.
“We are marching forward with our mission as we grow and expand, adding new teaching staff, an assistant director, fundraising initiatives and community outreach activities,” Thomasson said. “Our theme for the 2025-26 season was ‘Keys to the Kingdom.’ Each month we highlighted different aspects of what it looks like and means to ‘be a light and positive force’ in our world. From patience and praise, surrender and joy, along
with many other keys found in the Bible that guide our Christian faith, we wrapped up our season with the keys from Joshua 1:9 - strength and courage.”
She emphasized that ExHaLTT hopes students will make an impact in the community beyond the studio.
“Each student is encouraged to be a ‘warrior in their world’ by letting their light shine as Christ has gifted them in their sphere of influence,” she explained. “It could be as simple as picking up trash on the sidewalk, sitting with a new student at lunch or writing a
note of thanks to their teacher - all little things that ultimately make a big difference, even if it seems insignificant to most.”
Enrollment for the 2026-27 season will begin in early June. More information may be found by visiting www.exhalttdance company.org, emailing exhaltt performingarts@gmail.com or calling 717-702-6633.
“We are excited to continuing sharing our belief with anyone interested in being a part of ExHaLTT that ‘where the arts thrive, the soul comes alive!’” Thomasson said.
The Bainbridge American Legion Post 197 will host its annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25. The parade will step off at 9 a.m. from Bainbridge Elementary School, 416 N. Second St.
Each year, “poppy kids” sell flowers to raise money for patients at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. This year’s poppy kids are Adeline Akerberg, Bobby Santmyer, Addyson Waite, Ethan Gockley, and Harper Plummer.

Adeline Akerberg is one of the poppy kids at this year’s Memorial Day parade in Bainbridge.
