Youths encouraged to get outside at “Where Are We Wednesdays”

Cornerstone Youth Center recently received a grant that will help the organization introduce kids to the great outdoors.

A grant from the Matthews Children’s Foundation through Spence Funeral Services will be used to support “Where Are We Wednesdays,” an annual summer program for middle and high school students that will run on Wednesdays from June 12 through July 24.

“The program will enable Cornerstone to take our students

local hiking trails and other local attractions,” explained Jim Bush, Cornerstone executive director.

Twenty to 25 students typically participate in each field trip. “The hiking trips promote physical activity as well as introducing them to flowers, plants, trees and animals,” he remarked. “We will also incorporate a geocaching event into one of our hikes, where the students will have to use GPS coordinates to find a treasure hidden along the trail.”

Hikes will take place at several locations throughout the region, including Chickies Rock, Governor Dick Park in Mount Gretna, the White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta and Hawk Point at Susquehannock State Park.

The rooms of the Winters Heritage House Museum, located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will be bursting with color and history during the 34th annual Quilt Show and Heritage House Day. The exhibit will feature both modern and historical quilts, including one on loan from the Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro, as well as a variety of hands-on activities for children.

“Our Quilt Show offers the museum the opportunity to

People will have an opportunity to win an American flag blanket, hand-crocheted by Nila Grose. All proceeds from the events of the day will benefit veterans, including a veteran named Carl, who is a permanent patient at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and who is supported by the members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809.

Sara Gutshall of the American Legion Auxiliary has coordinated the Memorial Day events for many years.

“Veterans deserve our respect and honor,” she said. “I have brothers, cousins, uncles who were veterans. Patriotism is very important to me. Our veterans deserve the best from us because they gave their

Over the years, Gutshall has taken an active role in restoring the Maytown square, which features monuments recognizing local service members of various wars. She was instrumental in overseeing the installation of iron archways over the four walkways into the square, and she recently worked with local blacksmith Stan Newcomer to add lanterns to each archway. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 will donate eight American flags to line the walkways of the square as well.

Gutshall, now 84, was born and raised in Maytown. “I wanted to bring the square back to what I remember it was like when I was a child,” she shared. “It’s an important part of Maytown.”

The auxiliary is selling engraved bricks to honor military members and veterans. To place an order, call Gutshall at 717-426-2107.

Students participate in an outdoor activity during a previous year’s “Where Are We Wednesdays” program.

“We will also have a trip to Blue Marsh Lake and the Turkey Hill Experience,” Bush said, adding that the summer program will conclude with a pool party. Activities will run from 2 to 6 p.m. on most Wednesdays, with the exception of the longer program at the lake.

Grant funds will be used to provide food, transportation and entrance fees as needed, he said, adding, “We appreciate the generosity of the Matthews Children’s Foundation and Spence Funeral Services.”

Bush said the summer program fits in well with the overall mission of the youth center.

“We believe that it is important for kids to be physically active and engaged in activities out-

side their homes - and even outside Cornerstone,” he shared. “We take time over the summer months to give the students opportunities to take a break from their phones and video games and interact with each other and with God through His creation. It is our hope that they learn to appreciate the

beauty of nature and have some fun outdoors!”

The program is open to any youths from the greater Elizabethtown area. Permission forms must be completed by a parent in order for a student to participate. Permission forms can be obtained by calling the Cornerstone office at 717-367-0000.

West Main Storage opens in Mount Joy

West Main Storage recently celebrated the opening of its temperature-controlled self-storage facility on West Main Street in Mount Joy. The facility spans 31,475 square feet of leasable storage space containing 253 storage units ranging in size from 5 by 5 feet to 10 by 30 feet.

West Main Storage is located between Mount Joy and Elizabethtown and near Routes 30, 283 and 230. It is also close to landmarks like Wissler Motors, J.B. Its proximity to Elizabethtown College makes it an option for students, as well.

A range of indoor, temperature-controlled units and drive-up units are available. Temperature-controlled storage shields items from extreme temperature changes and is suitable for fragile items such as antiques, musical instruments, electronics and important documents. The Heritage House Day celebration will take place on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Along with the quilts and hands-on activities, music will be performed by Abigail’s Garden between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Craft demonstrations will be held, and local vendors will offer items for sale. Hot dogs, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

The event will wrap up with a quilt history presentation by Becky Hughes from the Daniel Boone Homestead. She will speak at 1 p.m. on May 23 in the H.U. Coble House, located at 33 E. High St., adjacent to the museum.

St. Angelo said working with the Daniel Boone Homestead has allowed the museum to expand its reach beyond the local community.

“Both the Winters Heritage House Museum and the Daniel Boone Homestead share the passion and ded-

ication to preserving the history, skills and traditions of the earliest settlers to the area,” she shared. “Quilting, weaving, hearth cooking and gardening are just a few of the skills and activities offered by these two historic locations for the young and old, experienced or beginner.”

As members of the national program Museums for All, both the Winters Heritage House Museum and the Daniel Boone Homestead support the vision of museums working together to transform lives and communities, she explained.

“Displaying a quilt from the Daniel Boone Homestead at our museum is an honor,” she said. “Working together, we can inspire, build relationships and provide learning experiences that benefit our visitors and communities.”

St. Angelo encourages anyone with an interest in textiles or history to check out the exhibit.

“The Quilt Show is a community and staff favorite,” she commented. “The importance of and appreciation for preserving the traditions and techniques of quilting is ever on our minds as we unfold, admire and hang each quilt with care and amazement. We are excited to share these exceptional quilts with all visitors.”

There is an admission charge for the exhibit for nonmembers age 14 and older. The presentation by Hughes will be offered free of charge. Both free and metered parking is available in a lot behind the museum. For more information on the Winters Heritage House and Museum, visit www.Eliz abethtownHistory.org or call 717-367-4672.
