When you come to the Elizabethtown Fire Department Food Truck and Craft Vendor Frenzy, come hungry and ready to check out creativity in action.
“Food trucks are available for lunch, dinner and snacks, while you can browse over 30 craft vendors,” said Diane Bontempi, who is organizing the event with Neil Bontempi.
The festivities will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, on the grounds of the firehouse, 171 N. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown.
“(Food trucks) will be serving up everything from smash burgers and fries to barbecue to tacos and quesadillas to desserts and candy,”
Neil said.
Participating trucks will include Spud Muffin, OBX Lemonade, Café

Proceeds from the Food Truck and Craft Vendor Frenzy will benefit the Elizabethtown Fire Department.
Haj Paj, The Donut Guys, Paulus’ Ice Cream Filled Donuts, Luongo Barbecue and Funcky Candy X-Press.
A wide variety of vendors will showcase their products as well.

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.
Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.
“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.
Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.
“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director.
Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.
“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curriculum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”
While riders of any skill

and Tastefully Simple will be on-site, as well as lots of local artisans selling their handmade goods, including crocheted items, jewelry, candles, dog treats, books, artwork, cookies, teas, home decor and officially licensed sports products,” Diane said.
The event has expanded over the years.
“It started as a small fundraiser with just a few food trucks, and in the last few years we have grown it to include more food trucks and
the craft vendor side,” Neil shared. Proceeds from the event are added to the fire department’s general fund and are used for operational expenses.
“The fire department serves all of Elizabethtown Borough, parts of Mount Joy Township, parts of West Donegal Township and parts of Conewago Township,” Neil explained. “The fire department is all volunteer and is always looking for more volunteers - no experience needed!”
The department has been serving the Elizabethtown area since 1838 and averages 700 calls a year.
There is no admission charge to attend the Food Truck and Craft Vendor Frenzy, and Diane encourages people to check out the event.

“It’s a great way to pick up unique gifts from talented local artisans and to get some great food from some of the best local food trucks, all while supporting your local fire department,” she said.

archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”
The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.
While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.
“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,” he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”
Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.
“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”
He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, one-day interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people
formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.
Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.
“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”
Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as a kid and now helps with either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.
“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,” Carruthers remarked. “Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station. The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”
She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.

The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.
“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”
Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.

level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.
Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.
LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.

Beyond supporting biking skills, LifeCycles provides encouragement for kids to step out of their comfort zone and believe in their ability to “do hard things,” the organization’s motto.
“You can expect to be seen, valued and encouraged as you grow physically and spiritually,” Lee commented. “Many parents tell us that LifeCycles is the first thing that has captured their son’s or daughter’s attention, that they actually look forward to the next gathering.”
He encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to come out and try LifeCycles.
“We meet teens where they are and help them challenge themselves at their own pace of growth, physically, spiritually and mentally,” he said. “We focus intensely on safety and proper cycling skills to equip the teens for a life of enjoyable riding. … Come and try it. It’s free, and there are no tryouts. What have you got to lose?”
