Elizabethtown

For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick

Celebrate your mom by taking a walk or a run with her - or in her honor - on Mother’s Day. The 10th annual Rotary Club of Elizabethtown Mother’s Day 5K will be held on Sunday, May 11. Raceday registration will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the race will step off at 3 p.m. The event will be held on the grounds of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, with a start and finish line near Veterans Grove. Once on the property, race participants should follow signs for parking.

“We just want to celebrate moms on their special day,” said event co-chair Dan Brill, explaining the impetus behind the event. “We try really hard to stay on a strict timeframe, so people still have plenty of time for dinner with Mom. We are usually done no later than 4:15.”

The event has been successful for a decade thanks to support both from participants, who come to enjoy family time and earn prizes, and from community organizations, Brill said.

“We want to give a huge thank you to our generous business sponsors who are listed on our shirts,” he said, noting that race T-shirts will be available while supplies last. “And one to mention is Masonic Village for the use of their beautiful grounds!”

Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers as well as the top three male and female finishers in seven age brackets: age 14 and under, ages 15 to 19, ages 20 to 29, ages 30 to 39, ages 40 to 49, ages 50 to 59 and age 60 and older.

“We also have some great door prizes to give out in addition to our awards,” Brill shared. Music will be featured at the event, and snacks will also be available. All mothers will also receive a flower to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Proceeds from the race will be used for various projects of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown.

With a motto of “Service Above Self,” the group supports a variety of community organizations and efforts throughout northwestern Lancaster County, including projects to benefit students in the Elizabethtown Area School

District and GEARS. The club marks its 100th anniversary this year. The service organization holds other major fundraisers throughout the year, including the Taste of Western Lancaster County with Elizabethtown Public Library, so the race event is mostly just an opportunity for community members to have fun together.

The 5K is a family-friendly event that offers an opportunity to bond with Mom on Mother’s Day, Brill said.

“Bring the kids and grandkids! It’s always a fun time,” he said, adding that the course is perfect for walkers or runners and for people of all ages. “What a healthy way to celebrate Mom on her day. Thanks to all the wonderful moms out there.”

Although race-day registration will be available, preregistration is encouraged. Online registration will close at midnight on Sunday, May 4.

From demonstrations of old-fashioned artistry to hands-on fun, Mayfest will offer something for everyone. The annual celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Activities will be held along West High Street and North and South King streets and in Legion Park, 20 N. King St., Maytown, all within walking distance of the Maytown Historical Society’s museum at 4 W. High St.

off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m. In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but

Mayfest is a celebration of the past, an opportunity to mark the founding of the Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760.

“Come to Mayfest to learn about your town’s past and to have a fun family day,” said Linda Good, Mayfest coordinator and vice president of the Maytown Historical Society. “You can expect to be entertained and also to learn about life in Maytown 265 years ago.”

organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation from drivers and wish families.

“Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-AWish director of development for Lancaster County.

The Family Fest will feature fun for people of all ages, Dietrich shared. Activities will include carnival-style games with prizes, costumed characters, entertainment from a DJ and a community expo.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase a home-style chicken dinner inside the auction building. Meals will include a barbecued chicken thigh, green beans, cheesy potatoes, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie and a drink. Dinners will be available for purchase on the day of the event until sold out.

A dozen food trucks, including The Pretzel Spot Cafe, Mocha Motion Coffee, Philly Cheesesteak Co. On the Roll and Holy Smoked Meats, will also be on-site.

Funds will also be raised through an online auction that will begin on Saturday, May 3, and will conclude at noon on May 10.

“Items include gift cards,

experiences, merchandise and more,” Dietrich said, noting that the auction will complement basket giveaways offered on-site at the Family Fest. “All baskets and auction items will be available for pickup from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 10 at the auction building. For those that cannot pick up at that time, alternative arrangements will be made.”

Last year’s convoy raised more than $442,000 to support the efforts of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“The 2025 goal is $500,000,” Dietrich remarked. “Anyone can help support granting wishes in the community by making a donation.”

Since 1990, more than 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised close to $10 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

After the convoy leaves

the auto auction, it will proceed along a 26-mile route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. Many of the trucks will carry wish kids along for the ride.

“There is a quiet zone this year on Cloverleaf Road for our convoy fans that would appreciate a quieter experience,” Dietrich said.

Drivers can still register to take part in the truck convoy. There is a fee for registering, and fundraising is optional but encouraged.

“We are also still in need of volunteers to assist with the day’s event, including truck parking, working the carnival games, helping at driver registration and more,” Dietrich commented. “It takes nearly 200 volunteers to have a safe and successful truck convoy for all to enjoy.”

Roberts to raise funds for PBCC

Jim Roberts of Mount Joy will compete in the 2025 One Lap of America. His participation will support the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC).

This year his transit driver will be Rich Grant, a member of the Northern Virginia Corvette Club. Roberts and Grant will use Roberts’ new orange Corvette and travel to race tracks in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan before returning to Indiana. Roberts will do all the competitive driving on the tracks, and Grant will help to drive the highway miles and maintain the car.

The duo will travel about 2,700 miles for the event and almost 4,000 miles by the time he arrives back home in just over a week. Along the way they will compete against about 90 other teams.

This will be Roberts’ 16th time competing in One Lap of America. Over the past several years, he has raised more than $50,000 in total for PBCC. In October at the PBCC’s pre-conference Pink Party at the Hilton Hotel, Roberts received the Pennsylvania Shining Light Award for raising more than $50,000.

Roberts will place a sticker on the roof of the Corvette in honor of each person who donates. The donor’s name or the name of someone the donor wishes to honor or memorialize will appear on the sticker.

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for volunteers to visit with patients receiving hospice care in your local community.

Our next orientation is:

June 5, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Manheim Township Public Library 595 Granite Run Drive Lancaster, PA 17601

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration closes one week before orientation. Please call for more information and to reserve your seat: 717-367-1121, ext. 33024, or visit MasonicVillageHospice.org/volunteer/registration.

Learning Station homeschool co-op has a large theater department that attracts students from all over Lancaster County, with many coming from the Ephrata, Lititz, Solanco, and Elizabethtown areas.

The show focuses on Lone Pine Films in Hollywood, which is slated to make a movie based on

a sensational new novel, “Gone With the Gust.” Peggy Tempest, the most powerful star in town, is slated to play the lead, but to keep her ego in check, the producers pretend they want an unknown actress for the part. They find the ideal girl, Vicki Rawlins, and the press builds her up to be the next Hollywood “it” girl. But when it is discovered that the producers do not actually have the film rights to the novel, Tempest sues.

To purchase tickets, visit www.homeschool-life .com/1434/store/pro duct?pid=2358. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The cast of “Gone With the Gust”

Mayfest

will operate an interactive stand, highlighting Civil War medical information.

“Kids can experience tearing bandages, washing clothes on a washboard, stuffing a mattress, along with information on rationing during that time period,” Good explained.

The Color Green will offer a demonstration of glass blowing, and Deb Gepfer will demonstrate needlework. She will also have Maytown needlework sampler patterns available for purchase.

Kelly McCart will demonstrate a pottery wheel, and Alpacas of York will provide a fleece-to-shawl presentation.

Penny candy will be available for children only.

John Scarpato will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies and will rove throughout the festivities with a microphone, asking attendees historical questions for a chance to win prizes.

At 2 p.m., local couple Janie and Larry Garber will mark 50 years of marriage by renewing their vows at a ceremony in front of the museum.

Second-graders from Donegal Primary School will sing songs and dance to music written in the 1800s, Good shared. “Following the second-graders will be the traditional maypole dance done by students from Donegal Intermediate School (DIS),” she said. “To end the program, the entire town is invited to participate in a cake walk around the square.” There is an incidental charge for participating in the cake walk, and the prizes will be homemade cakes and cookies.

“There will be a narrated bus tour highlighting Maytown’s businesses in the 1800s,” Good said, noting that there is a small fee for adults taking the tour but there is no charge for children who participate. “The bus will also stop, drop off and pick up at the huge vendor fair organized by the Shank Shoppe in Legion Park. There will be 93 stands in the park, with a variety of quality wares for sale and also including a petting area with goats.”

Numerous food trucks will set up along King

Street, and the museum will sell hot dogs, chili and baked goods.

“A family scavenger hunt will begin near the museum, and the questions and answers will take you on a trip around Mayfest,” Good remarked. “Prizes for completing it will be a game played by kids in Maytown long ago.”

Crafts and games for children will also be featured.

Special pillowcases made by the DIS sewing club and artwork from DIS students will be on display at the Maytown Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St. At Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St., pictures of Maytown historical houses, created by first-grade students, will be on display.

“All first-graders participated in Mayfest by drawing a picture of an actual house in Maytown,” Good explained. “Pictures were judged, and winner ribbons will be on the winning pictures.”

An old-fashioned popcorn wagon will be set up on High Street, and the old bank on West High Street, now a bed-and-breakfast, will be open for self-guided tours.

At 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Bonnie Frank will showcase her prizewinning shelties in a dog agility show held at 111 S. River St. Access to the show will be through an alley behind the Church of God.

Tickets will be sold to win a hand-carved bird designed by local woodcarver Danny Ebersole, and the museum will be open with a new exhibit on Maytown businesses in the 1800s. The museum will

also showcase a recently recovered needlework sampler made in Maytown. Two styles of handmade crocks - a jelly jar with a lid and a midsize crock - will also be sold to celebrate Maytown’s birthday.

Proceeds from Mayfest are used to support efforts to preserve Maytown’s past.

“We are having a capital campaign to raise money to make our outbuilding climate-controlled in order to preserve our valuable archive collection,” Good said. “We also have monthly expenses to keep our museum and the property in good condition.”

The rain date for Mayfest will be Sunday, May 4, but many of the activities will not be held if the event is postponed.

It means root, foundation, or the beginning of something. Milandila Community Missions is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus. Through relational evangelism and discipleship, Milandila presents the Gospel through conversation, counseling, and discussion-based Bible teaching.

Last year, Milandila assisted more than 100 women and had to turn many more away due to space restrictions. Previous office, warehouse, and factory space could be renovated into a birthing clinic, church, educational programming center, pharmacy, laboratory, and life skills training area. Tumwesiigye had the vision but lacked the knowledge and manpower to make the transformation possible.

along profitable trade skills and foster relationships between the missionaries and the people to create conversational opportunities to share the Gospel.

The team’s efforts during the first round of construction allowed Milandila to host its first educational prenatal class for more than 100 women in one of the newly constructed areas.

The transformation that can take place due to the classes is demonstrated in the life of a Ugandan woman named Abbo. She grew up in an environment of strict religious beliefs, and her pregnancy led to her abandonment by her unborn baby’s father and

Abbo’s being shunned by her community. Alone with no work or resources, she turned to Milandila. Whereas she previously thought that God was approachable only through her good works, she now heard the Gospel message of forgiveness through God’s grace.

Another team of volunteers from Community Bible Church in Marietta is slated to continue efforts on a second phase of construction in June. In addition to the installation of bathroom essentials, crews will work on a parking area, plaster exterior walls, lay flooring on a courtyard and teaching area, and finish electrical work.
