Students Earn SkillsUSA Awards Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Alexander Miller and Devan Bickhart recently earned awards at the District 5 SkillsUSA event held at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. Miller placed second in the Mechatronics category, while Bickhart placed third in the Welding category. The Mechatronics competition consisted of three events designed to measure the skills required in the modern automated manufacturing environment. Contestants were required to assemble, adjust, and test an automated machine system; troubleshoot and repair a faulty machine system; and take a comprehensive written test. Competitors in the Welding division received contest drawings and a set of

welding procedure specifications. They had to complete the steel project and weld an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals. SkillsUSA is a national organization that focuses on preparing students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. SkillsUSA offers local, state, and national opportunities for students to learn and practice personal, workplace, and technical skills. The technical competitions are intended to help establish industry standards for job skill training and entry-level workers. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a successful model of employer-driven youth development training.

Sheila wasted no time connecting with the friend’s mother, who connected her with a small group of women in Elizabethtown and Mount Joy who were making masks, including Deborah Santiago and Donna Shenk.
