14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services

n 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time.

Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children.

GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or

at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.”

Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing.

“I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth.

Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.”

Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS.

For years, Jody Cutting has participated in the Discovery Toys Easter Basket Program, which provides Easter baskets to children in need throughout the United States and Canada. This year, the Discovery Toys Play Advisor shifted her focus to her local community.

Working with Elizabethtown Area School District social worker Jenn Fields, Cutting collected donations to fill 22 baskets for children and families in the district.

After a year when most events were canceled, the Elizabethtown Fair committee is eager to get back in action. “We’ll be doing things a little differently than past years, with masks and social distancing, but we are ready. The public is ready for the fair to come back.

Everybody is ready,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. “It’s really exciting.”

Fundraising is a big part of the preparation for the fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 23, through

Saturday, Aug. 28. The Elizabethtown Fair will hold its 35th annual chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 8, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. It will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be a drive-through pickup. The meal will include a half-chicken, donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ; potato chips contributed by Herr’s; applesauce provided by Charles & Alice; a roll, donated by Pepperidge Farm; a dessert, contributed by Mars Wrigley Confectionery; and a beverage, provided by Swiss Premium Dairy Inc. Land O’Lakes will provide butter.

“This is our only fundraiser for the fair,” Nolt explained.

“We usually hope to raise about $10,000.” Proceeds from the barbecue will be used to cover fair expenses such as paying for operation costs including electricity and insurance as well as premium money.

Attendees will take a one-hour guided trail ride through the ranch’s 275 acres of woods and farmland. The horses are trained to work with riders who have little or no experience. For safety reasons, trotting or galloping will not be allowed. All children must be 8 or older, and there is a strict weight limit of 225 pounds. Masks or bandanas are required when attendees arrive and check in. Once the trail ride starts, masks may be pulled down.

Spin & Sculpt, which offers a combination of indoor cycling and strength training, will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 1 to July 29 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. (Class A) or 7 to 8 p.m.

Community Place On Washington Expands

The need for community services is on the rise in Elizabethtown, and United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) is here to help. The organization operates Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., and is hard at work constructing a new building on the campus. The new building, located at 105 E. Washington St., is set to open in October and will double the amount of space available for community programs and services, said Derrick McDonald, UCEA president.

Construction began on the project in November of 2020 and continues the growth that the organization has seen over the past few years. In October of 2018, Community Place on Washington opened, fulfilling UCEA’s mission of having a social services complex within walking distance of downtown Elizabethtown, where agencies could come together to serve the community in one location. Community Place on Washington is home to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), as well as Elizabethtown Area

United Churches Elizabethtown Area is constructing a new building for Community Place on Washington.

Communities That Care, the Elizabethtown Area HUB, Tabor financial services, UCEA’s food pantry (the Community Cupboard) and the Clothing Barn.

The new building will meet the growing needs of ECHOS in particular, McDonald said. “The majority of the new space will be for ECHOS,” he explained.

“It will house the ECHOS enrichment center, expanded winter shelter, mental health resources, offices and apartments for their housing programs.” McDonald noted that the building also has room for additional nonprofits that may be looking to relocate.

Funding for the project is provided by Community Development Block Grants through the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority, and church bonds are being sold to finance the rest of the construction, McDonald said. He added that although the project is well underway, help is needed to be sure it continues.

He noted that response from the community has been very positive for Community Place on Washington and its expansion. “This time last year, we had no idea how we were going to do anything or be able to expand, and volunteers just stepped up,” he remarked. “I want to thank the community for all the wonderful support they’ve given so far and to ask for their prayers and continued support for the work we’re doing. It has been an absolute blessing - especially this past year when so many people are struggling - to have the community help us in so many ways to make sure we are able to continue to support people who need us.”

Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) will celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in May. From Saturday, May 1, to Monday, May 31, a progressive art walk through downtown Lancaster will be held.

Community members may take a stroll down North Queen Street, North Prince Street, and Gallery Row and view mental health-themed artwork in the windows of the 30 participating businesses. The progressive art walk will launch MHA’s yearlong anti-stigma campaign, “ We Need to Talk About Mental Health.”

On Saturday, May 8, MHALC will host its firstever virtual walk, Walk Your Way for MHA. MHALC encourages the community to walk, run, bike, hike, swim, kayak, or cartwheel along as MHALC counts the miles for mental health. Participants may do as little or as much as they like and register as an individual or as a team. Participants can compete for medals in different categories. On the day of the walk, participants will share the unique and creative ways they accomplished their goal and text their completed miles so MHALC can update its mile tracker.

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “ We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wish covoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website.

The public is also invited to

participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org.

“We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said.

“Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.”

People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com/u8ddcvrw.

“There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy.

“Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch

explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.”

This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-AWish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our

team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.”

Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

Hometown Heroes To Hear The Bells East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic.

Elected officials across the commonwealth have joined together to promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes. On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense

of themselves and their families to serve the general public.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus.

“The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.”

Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction.

“Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of not interacting with anyone, and that’s not good,” he

Or a new refrigerator? Mark your calendar to attend the Kraybill Mennonite School’s 44th annual pig roast and auction, to be held at the school, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. The event will run on Friday, May 7, from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This year, we will have a live auction, outside under a tent, in addition to a simultaneous online auction,” said Liz Heisey, auction chair. “We will have TV screens in the live auction tent showing what’s being shown online. People can bid in person or from their homes.”

The auction will include some big-ticket items such as a lawn tractor, a Yeti cooler and a weekend mountain getaway, Heisey noted. “We will have a handmade four-sided picnic table made by a Kraybill parent,” she added. “We will have lots of quilts.”

Highlights of the event include auctioning off class projects. “Each class works together to come up with a

themed basket or a personalized project,” Heisey explained, noting that parents in her son’s prekindergarten class refinished an old student desk and chair, and then students put their handprints on it to make a unique keepsake.

Teachers also auction off opportunities for students to participate in one-on-one experiences with them, such as trips for miniature golf or ice cream. A children’s tent will feature a Mother’s Day craft station and games. On Friday night, an inflatable obstacle course will be set up for children, and a silent auction will be held in the gym.

In addition to the auction items, the event will feature a pig roast on Friday night and a chicken barbecue on Saturday. Additional food options will include the Mount Joy Rotary french fry truck, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and Gene Wenger’s Meats’ hamburgers, along with baked goods and strawberry pies.

Proceeds from the auction help cover tuition costs and pay for maintenance projects at the school. “We use the money toward offsetting the

cost of private education so we can keep our tuition down,” Heisey explained, adding that in 2018 and 2019, the auction raised $110,000 each year, and she’d like to meet that goal this year. Last year’s auction was canceled due to the pandemic.

“It’s great to be able to see other people and share the

enthusiasm of the students and alumni who come back every year to see the exciting things we’re doing at Kraybill,” Heisey remarked. “It’s just a great community event.”

Blessings Of Hope Plans 5K, 10K Event Blessings of Hope will hold the iCare 5K and 10K Walk and Run on Saturday, May 29.

People of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Proceeds will help Blessings of Hope to feed struggling individuals and families in the local region and beyond.

Check-in will start at 7:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 8:30 a.m. at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata, which is the future home of Blessings of Hope. Pets are welcome to participate with their owners.

The course will be a scenic route through Lancaster County farmland, with a water station at the turnaround point. After the race, sand-

wiches and orange juice will be available and awards will be presented to the top overall male and female finishers as well as the winners in various age brackets.

The finish line and timing service will be provided by Pretzel City Sports, with race results posted at www.pretzel citysports.com. Those who register and pay by Saturday, May 1, will receive a discount and an iCare sweat towel embroidered by a local Amish woman.

Sam Morril will bring his stand-up comedy to the Dutch Apple stage on Sunday, May 16, at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Morril is a regular on Comedy Central’s “This Week at the Comedy Cellar,” was named one of Comedy Central’s comics to watch in 2011, and has performed multiple stand-up sets on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and “Conan.”

Most recently, Morril selfreleased his stand-up special, “Up on the Roof,” which navigates performing live during COVID-19. In February 2020, he released his third stand-up special for Comedy Central, “I Got This,” on YouTube, and it received more 1.5 million views within the first two weeks. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The season continues to move along for the girl’s lacrosse team with the Lady Bears still in search of their first win after losses to Mechanicsburg and Cedar Crest.

The Bears braved the cold and windy weather on April 21st only to fall to the visiting Falcons by a 13-7 final. “Score wise it didn’t go in our favor,” said head coach Cheyenne Benson, “but missing four starters, a few injuries and other people that had minimal minutes, honestly they put their hearts out there and gave 100% effort. They did all the little things we asked them to do. It just didn’t come out in our favor.”

Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. There are some silver linings to Camp Will being virtual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell.

“Kids will have incredible educational and performative opportunities.”

Howell believes that a lot of students, especially highschoolers, have learned to be afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel that if they put themselves out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it because there’s power in these words,” said Howell.

The People’s Shakespeare Project offers scholarships to students who need financial assistance to attend Camp Will. Enrollment is limited to 14 students. “We want to give the kids personal attention,” explained Howell. “It’s important that the kids get a good education and have fun at the same time.”

Inspired Beginnings is focused on helping families gain access to educational and support resources that help their children develop learning strategies early.

Sessions will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The stream study will reveal overwintering insects in their maturing aquatic stages. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings, and they must be registered.

Thursday in the Park: Animal Babies, for children ages 6

to 9, will be held on Thursday, May 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Children will learn when and where they can expect to see and hear the offspring of local wildlife, as well as strategies some parents use to help their young survive.

Attendees should dress for the weather and plan for outdoor activity. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

A Dusk Hike, for people of all ages, will take place on May 6 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn about animals before taking a walk through the Environmental Center field and along the Scout Trail, which is short and of easy to moderate hiking difficulty.

The Education Department of Lancaster EMS announced its “Learn While You Earn” program. The program will be the first full-time academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS-approved EMT - Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink.

Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week. Haley Breslin, a student at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster, has been chosen to participate in the Kiev Grand Prix Festival, a ballet competition in Ukraine. This competition has a longstanding reputation of including some of the world’s most talented ballerinas.

Breslin is a junior at the Commonwealth Charter Academy. She will join other students from the United States in the competition, but she is the only student from Pennsylvania who will participate.

Haley has been working toward this goal since September of last year. She dances six days a week and fits in extra lessons between school and her regular dance schedule.

This will be the second time that Viktor Yeliohin, the ballet master of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will participate in the event, as he has been selected as one of the event’s many judges.

On March 19, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) celebrated its inaugural World Changer Day, a day dedicated to caring, serving, and giving.

The creation of the event was inspired by the school’s Love Beyond Distances Day held last spring, which was an event where students and faculty came up with creative ways to serve and love the community safely during the pandemic.

During World Changer Day, students in prekindergarten through 12th grade made goodie bags for bus drivers, gift packs for nurses and patients in pediatric units, uplifting cards and videos for retirement communities, and knotted quilts; packed hygiene kits for Mennonite Central Committee; and beautified their campuses. Their goal was to change someone’s world, if even for a day.
