This girl grapples like a champ

You can tell Ivy Carl that she wrestles like a girl, and she’ll take that as a compliment. She’s proven that girls can succeed in a sport traditionally dominated by boys, coming off a very successful season wrestling with Elizabethtown Area School District.

This year, Ivy was the first Elizabethtown girl in her weight class to win the Elizabethtown Optimist Junior High Tournament, taking first place in every match in the 103-pound group during the event, held in February. Her end-of-season record was 19-1 for the regular season and 26-6 post season.

Ivy began wrestling three years ago, when she joined the Elizabethtown Bears Club (EBC).

“I made the competition team my first season and wrestled mostly boys,” she said. “I wrestled with EBC for two years and then tried out for the middle school team my third year.” She credits her EBC coaches with taking a chance on her, giving her the push she needed to continue pursuing the sport she discovered through her brother.

“I would wrestle around with my brother, who wrestled on the team I wrestled for,” she recalled. “He started before me. There was a takedown tournament I was asked to try out the day of it. I took third place my first time trying the sport.”

Ivy, who is in seventh grade, joined the Elizabethtown Area Middle School team this season. She also wrestles in other clubs to stay conditioned.

Find your next adventure

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see

what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Support the fair with a chicken dinner

This was the first time the Optimist tournament - a wellknown event marking its 50th year - was open to all-girls’ teams.

“I wrestle wherever I can find to keep in competition,” she stated. “I like that wrestling is an independent sport that prepares you in strength and in life.”

Becoming the first girl to win her weight class in the tournament was an accomplishment she’s proud of, Ivy said, but she said there’s value to be had in losses as well.

Each summer, the Elizabethtown Fair provides a week of agriculture-focused, community fun. To support the event, fair organizers will hold the 39th annual Elizabethtown Fair chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 10. The meal will be available for drive-through pickup at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The dinner will include a half-chicken, potato chips, applesauce, a roll, dessert and a

drink. A bake sale will be held in conjunction with the barbecue, with proceeds benefiting the fair queen scholarship competition. Cookbooks, titled “Making Memories II,” will be for sale as well. Filled with recipes from local residents, the cookbooks were created to celebrate the 50th Elizabethtown Fair in 2023.

The chicken for the barbecue will be donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ. Herr’s will provide potato chips, and Pepperidge Farm will donate the rolls. Swiss

Family Travel Fair

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its inception in

2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will

feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastrieswill also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

The barbecue is the only fundraiser held to benefit the fair, which operates with no admission charge.

“People should purchase the barbecue to help keep the community event free and continuing,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. “The fair provides something for people of all ages, from the baby photo contest and baby race to Senior Citizens Day.”

The 52nd annual Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 18, through Saturday, Aug. 23.

“Each August, the Elizabethtown Fair provides an opportunity for the showcasing of Lancaster County agriculture,” Nolt stated. “The Elizabethtown Fair strives to promote agriculture, creativity and community involvement in an atmosphere conducive to wholesome family fun.”

showcase local businesses and support local nonprofit organizations,” she commented.

Advance tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from Elizabethtown Fair members and friends or by calling 717-808-1397. Tickets may also be purchased at the following Elizabethtown locations: Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St.; Groff’s Meats, 33 N. Market St.; and B&G Lumber, 212 W. High St. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but advance purchase is not required.

A tentative premium book and schedule for the 2025 Elizabethtown Fair can be found at https:// etownfair.com.

The weeklong event features activities, exhibits, contests and entertainment, as well as rides and a variety of food. New activities this year will include a circus, an alpaca show and a costume contest.

The fair is the perfect example of a small-town community event, Nolt said.

“Join us as we celebrate the talents of our community members,

“Even being on mat makes you a stronger person, whether wins or losses,” she said, noting that many wrestlers get pinned and many experience “tech falls” in their matches, when the opponent’s lead is so large, the opponent automatically wins. “Many kids never win a match.”

Ivy is just one of three Carl kids who succeed at wrestling. Her older sister, Cassidy, also wrestles, as does her younger brother, Liam.

“All three of us qualified for Keystone States this year,” Ivy said. “I also qualified for my fourth season on the PJW (Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling), which is a state-clarified tournament as well.”

The Carl siblings, who are the children of John and Tracy Carl of Elizabethtown, travel to compete in wrestling as well. They recently competed in a high school national tournament in Virginia Beach.

Cassidy began wrestling three years ago after watching her brother and becoming interested in the sport. She wrote a letter to

the Elizabethtown school board to push for a girls’ wrestling team in the district.

The current Elizabethtown Area High School sophomore said she’s learned a lot from both the girls’ team wrestling coach and EBC coaches.

“I competed in my first takedown tournament with only one practice under my belt,” Cassidy shared. “I have learned a lot since then. Something I love about wrestling is it pushes you towards your limits, and it really grew my confidence. It also pushes you mentally and physically.”

Like her sister, Cassidy enjoys that wrestling is an individual sport, but she appreciates the support of her teammates.

“My team is like another family,” she said. “We all push each other and care for one another.”

Ivy credits her success to support from her family but also believing in herself and her abilities.

“(It’s about) confidence,” Ivy said. “I was the lowest seed in one

tournament and on paper looked as the least better wrestler, but I won whole tournament, taking first place.”

She hopes other girls will consider wrestling.

“Don’t be afraid to try it,” Ivy remarked. “It grows confidence, and it takes you places. I have gotten to travel more than I have in past. You will be stronger for it.”
