Supporting a K9 Cause

Members of the Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 of the Free and Accepted Masons have a mission to serve their community. With that in mind, they invite the public to their Spring Breakfast. The event will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the Brossman Ballroom of the Freemason Cultural Center on the Masonic Village campus, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. The meal will feature all-youcan-eat pancakes and sausage, along with a variety of pancake toppings, juice, coffee and water. Food will be prepared by lodge members under the supervision of Woody Gerver, chef and food supervisor at Masonic Health Care Center. Proceeds from the meal will be used to support the K9 program of Northwest Regional Police Department. K9 officer Arlo will be retiring after more than nine years of service, and the station is in the process of raising funds for a new dog.

Dig Into Fun at Community Day

When Friends in Action International hosts its annual Community Fun Day and Mission Expo, the event has several goals, said Andy Bachert, COO of the Elizabethtown-based nonprofit.

“This is an opportunity to bring awareness of who we are to the community,” he said. “It’s also a chance to highlight some of the other organizations that serve in the area as well.”

The celebration will be held on

From Mount Joy to Ghana, an Arm of Hope stretches across continents to reach children in need. That connection will come to life locally on Saturday, May 2, when the Mount Joy-based nonprofit invites the community to step up and step out for its annual 5K. The event will be held at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., with the race kicking off at 9 a.m. Greg Grove, who directs the race with Keith Franz, encouraged people to sign up for the event.

“It’s a great family-friendly event, flat, easy course with door prizes and a great cause,” he said. “All ages are welcome - walkers, runners, strollers, pets, everyone!” Along with a variety of door prizes, baked goods will be presented to the top finishers in each age bracket.

The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40will receive a handcrafted wooden trophy from Ghana, Grove said. A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K. The chicken barbecue is available for preorder only by Friday, April 24. To order, visit www.armofhope inghana.org/bbq.

Strawberries, Waffles and a Mission to Serve

Sweet strawberries, warm waffles and community service will be on the menu when Ruhl’s Church serves up its annual fundraising breakfast.

The church will host its all-youcan-eat breakfast on Saturday, May 2, from 6 to 10 a.m. or until sold out, at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

Along with strawberries and waffles, the menu will also include pancakes, scrambled eggs and eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausages, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages.

“All food will be prepared and served by the Mission Outreach Team members who will be participating in either of the mission trips happening this summer,” explained mission team member Gail Ruhl, who organizes the trips with her husband, Chuck. “Each year we choose a destination that has either been hit with a natural disaster or is in a community where the residents are not financially able to repair or upkeep their homes.”

She noted that this year is unique because the mission team is planning two mission trips for the first time.

“For several years now, some members of our core team of volunteers have been requesting a mission trip to Guatemala to help at Kairos House. Our church spent many years serving with this organization in the past, and some of those who served there before

were very interested in returning,” Gail said. “We knew that a mission trip to another country would not be for everyone, so we thought offering two mission trips would be a good idea. Fortunately, we have help with the planning of both trips.”

One mission team will serve the community of Charleston, W.Va., from Sunday to Saturday, June 21 to 27. That team will help with home repairs and improvements for elderly and low-income families. Another mission team will serve with Kairos Ministries in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from Saturday, July 4, to Sunday, July 12.

“This team will be helping to improve the living conditions for the residents of Kairos House, which is a home away from home for families who often travel great distances from small villages to the city for medical treatments for life-threatening illnesses, by repairing and replacing structural issues that will address safety concerns while providing a more comfortable, welcoming appearance to the house,” Gail said. “All proceeds from this breakfast will be used to offset the cost of both mission trips, which includes building materials, transportation, meals and lodging.”

The Ruhls have been organizing and participating in mission trips for many years.

“The Mission Outreach Team from Ruhl’s Church consists of individuals from our church and throughout the community who are of like mind to spread the love of God through service to

others,” Gail commented. “We have worked together for many years completing various projects for congregation members, as well as people in our community. We have served together locally, nationally and now globally. We are thankful for our church family and community members who are faithful, generous supporters of our Mission Outreach Team. Their continual prayer and financial support is a blessing to us, our community and to all those we serve.”

She encourages people to come to the breakfast, noting that many attendees come back year after year for food and friendship.

“Our church strives to provide a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere for folks to fellowship together,” she said. “There will also be a chance for attendees to ask about our past or upcoming mission trips or to inquire

about joining our mission team in future endeavors. It is also a great opportunity for people to support a worthwhile cause. Not everyone who appreciates the mission work our group does is able to join us in our efforts, but attending and supporting our fundraisers gives people the opportunity to walk alongside us as we serve others.”

Tickets or reservations are not required for the breakfast. It is recommended to come early for the breakfast for the best selection of food. There are separate admission prices for adults and for children ages 5 to 12. There is no admission charge for children age 4 and under. Additional donations will also be accepted.

The breakfast will be held in the fellowship hall of Ruhl’s Church. The church and parking area are both fully handicapped-accessible.

Presentation to Focus on Agriculture

Christ Church United Church of Christ (UCC), 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, will host a presentation for the community about the 2026 Growing Project at Wittel Farm on Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

“God Is in the Garden: Res -

urrection, Regeneration, and Return” will be offered by the Rev. Matthew Lenahan, a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the director of the Wittel Farm Growing Project at 1753 Mill Road, Elizabethtown.

The Wittel Farm is an 85-acre preserved farm and a ministry site of the Lutheran Camping Corporation of Central Pennsylvania. It started in 2016 to provide fresh, locally grown vegetables for the charitable food system in Lancaster County. Lenahan has been learning about and incorporating regenerative farming principles to restore soil health and ecological biodiversity, while growing a mixed vegetable crop on 3 acres of a 9-acre field. The farm’s distribution partners include Lancaster County Food Hub, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, Power Packs, Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, Peter’s Porch, Ephrata Area

Social Services, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Community Action Program, and the Elizabethtown Farmer’s Market. Christ Church UCC is a partner with Wittel Farm, providing volunteers, financial support, and the host site for the Elizabethtown Farmer’s Market, where produce is given away to the community.

Lenahan’s presentation will explore the necessary intersection between the Christian faith community and the land, God’s

creation. He will share a vision for local, community-supported regenerative agriculture that can ensure food justice and food security through a common commitment to local food production. The presentation will also cover the importance of regenerative agriculture as a necessary transition in land stewardship to confront the problem of climate change. To learn more about the Wittel Farm and to volunteer, visit www .wittelfarm.org.

The annual 5K is a fundraiser for the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, which provides food, education and health care to children in need through weeklong camps for students of elementary and high school age. The camps provide an opportunity for children to get out of the slums of Ghana and have fun, all while learning about the love of Jesus.

“Arm of Hope changes lives,” Grove shared, noting that the July camp expects 1,100 campers this summer at a cost of approximately $60 per child. “A team from the U.S. led by Cheryl and Mike Zimmerman - Cheryl is the U.S. director of Arm of Hope - goes every year to help with the twoweek camp.”

Grove has experienced the power of the program firsthand.

“I have been to summer camp six times in the last 11 years, including last summer, and I have witnessed kids grow up and get involved as leaders as adults in Arm of Hope and their community,” he shared. “As I said, Arm of Hope changes lives. I have seen it.”

Online advance registration is requested for the 5K and will increase the chance of obtaining a race T-shirt, but race-day registration will also be accepted. The deadline for registering online is Friday, May 1. The cost to register is by donation.

Mayfest Will Bring Colonial Maytown to Life

Come to Mayfest on Saturday, May 2, and take a step back in time.

“We will be concentrating on Maytown in 1776 and what life was like here and who lived here,” said Mayfest chair Linda Good, who noted that the event will celebrate both the country’s 250th birthday as well as Maytown’s 266th birthday.

“Since Maytown is older than the USA, this year’s Mayfest will feature many activities that portray Maytown during the Revolutionary War period,” she stated. “Our historical scavenger hunt will focus on different houses in town and what they were used for. For example, there was a gunsmith, a house used for a prison, a tinsmith, etc. ... Find out what Maytown was like in 1776!”

Mayfest will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This year, Mayfest is being held in the square and the four blocks from the square each way,” Good said, noting that it will encompass North and South River streets, as well as East and West High streets, which will be closed to traffic.

Mayfest will feature more

The breakfast festivities will include more than food.

“There will be a variety of (giveaways), a blood drive, (and) Arlo and his handler officer Seidel will be available throughout the event with a presentation following the final seating,” said Mason Jim Miller. “There will also be representatives of the PA Masonic Youth available to promote their programs and activities. In addition, the Rooster Woodshop on campus will be open with a display of many fine woodworking projects for your purchase. The Rooster Woodshop is also a proud supporter of our efforts in raising funds for this worthy cause.”

Advance purchase of tickets is recommended for the breakfast, but tickets may be purchased at the door while supplies last. To purchase tickets, visit the Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Facebook page, contact Dennis O’Connor at 717-475-5655 or see any lodge member.

The lodge will also host a chicken barbecue on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The meal will include a half-chicken from Kauffman’s Bar-B-Que, chips, applesauce and a bottle of water.

“This is a drive-through pickup event at the Brossman parking lot on the Masonic Village campus,” said Mason Johnny Keplinger. “There will also be walk-up available at the Freemason Cultural Center in the

than 70 vendors, along with food trucks, a display of pillowcases and blankets from the Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) sewing club, children’s Colonial games and crafts, a food stand to benefit the Maytown Historical Society, a wedding ceremony, songs and dances from second-graders, a first-grade art contest display, a penny candy store for kids, a cake walk around the square, live music, live art and the traditional maypole dance by DIS students.

“The wedding will be a renewal of the vows of Anthony and Kathie Eshleman,” Good said. “They will be attended by their three grandchildren.”

Good noted that in 1776, Maytown was a busy place, home to many businesses.

“Mayfest will feature many historical demonstrators and educators sharing their crafts and knowledge for all to see and experience,” she said. “A unique family scavenger hunt will help you discover the location and information about a place where Hessian prisoners were held, Maytown fur traders, a place where medical procedures

Tony Eshleman (back, left) and Kathie Eshleman (middle) will renew their wedding vows at Mayfest, attended by their grandchildren (continuing clockwise) Blythe Eshleman, Clara Eshleman and Charlotte Carbaugh.

were performed, a musket maker, a blacksmith, a flintknapper and more - all of them in Colonial Maytown.”

Good explained that the scavenger hunt will be history-themed, with trinkets to collect at each stop.

People are encouraged to take the trinkets to the Trading Post for prizes and trading.

Mayfest is an annual event organized by and to benefit the Maytown Historical Society.

“Proceeds are used for storage needs for our new archive building

and for general museum upkeep,” Good said.

Parking for Mayfest will be available outside of the aforementioned closed streets and at Legion Park, 20 N. King St., Maytown.

lodge multipurpose room.”

Advance sales will be held for pickup until 5 p.m., when dinners may be purchased until sold out. Tickets may be purchased through the same methods used for the Spring Breakfast mentioned above.

Both the breakfast and the barbecue will support the K9 program as well as other Masonic charities and community charities as funds allow.

As O’Connor explained, Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 is a fraternal organization of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.

“Freemasonry is a brotherhood of men who share one common goal: to help each other become better men,” he said. “It is the oldest, largest and most widely known fraternal organization in the world. Men from all different backgrounds and walks of life come together as equals and strive to apply the timeless virtues of brotherly love, charity and truth to their everyday lives.”

Masons in Pennsylvania serve their communities in various practical ways, Miller said.

“You can find them hosting blood drives, sponsoring youth sports teams, cleaning up a local park, collecting food donations or serving as Scout leaders,” he noted. “These community service projects, as well as random acts of kindness, are everyday reflections of who Freemasons are and the values for which they stand.”

The lodge is accepting new members.

“Freemasonry welcomes men of every religion, race, age, income, education and opinion,” Keplinger said, noting that there are a few required qualifications to join. “Further information is available at www .pagrandlodge.org, where you can also submit a request to join.”

Choosing the K9 program as a beneficiary of its events was a natural fit for the organization, O’Connor said.

“Masonic Village was approached to see if any organizations on campus would be willing to support the effort to help raise the funds for the K9 program,” he shared. “With one of the goals of freemasonry being to support the community, we were honored to step up and help support this worthy cause.”

Keplinger added that beyond enjoying a delicious meal, the breakfast and the barbecue offer more to anyone who attends.

“These events are great opportunities to see how freemasons work together to support a worthy cause and enjoy the fellowship and socialization of our brothers and the community,” he said. “In addition to the breakfast and chicken barbecue, Abraham C. Treichler Lodge welcomes individual and/or business donations for this worthy cause.” Donations may be mailed to the lodge. For more information, visit the lodge’s Facebook page.

Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown.

Friends in Action International supports missionaries and mission organizations, using construction and trade services. Each year, the group sends 20 to 25 teams of workers for short-term missions to help build clinics, churches or homes and to instruct locals in Indigenous skills training.

At the Community Fun Day and Mission Expo, people will see firsthand what the organization does.

“This is our fifth anniversary of this event, so we are having a couple of extra guests,” Bachert explained. “We’ll have small expos and demonstrations of things we do on our projects when we work out in the field.”

Among the activities will be a welding expo and a shipping expo.

“We’ll also have construction equipment on-site for kids to climb on and around,” Bachert said. “We’ll

have an adult excavating obstacle course.”

For kids, barrel train rides will be offered in a custom-made train outfitted to look like construction equipment.

“We’ll have a small excavator kids can sit on in a sawdust pit and try it out,” Bachert added.

A hand pump station will showcase how the organization drills and installs wells, telling the story of the importance of clean water.

Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will present a program, and the Kids Cookie Break program from WJTL 90.3 will play music throughout the day.

Phredd - Ukulele One Man Band will entertain, and kids can also enjoy a bounce house.

“We’ll have a candy cannon, which is kind of like a peanut scramble, but it shoots candy out of a cannon,” Bachert said.

“We’ll also have an area inside the warehouse where we’ll be doing

kids’ crafts, and we’ve invited other nonprofits from the area to set up display tables. One of the places will be Community Bible Church in Marietta. We want this day to be an opportunity not just to promote Friends in Action but other organizations as well.”

Several food trucks will also be on-site, including The Donut Guys, Traveling J’s, Rita’s Italian Ice and The Holy Roller.

Bachert hopes the event will give the community a picture of the work Friends in Action performs.

“We’re not like a typical mission organization,” he said. “We support missionaries. We’re 100% focused on mission support. We come alongside those out there planting churches and evangelizing, who might not be able to complete the construction work or build the house they need.”

The group has traveled all over the world for mission work, including Bolivia, Nicaragua, Peru,

West Africa, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Vanuatu and Burkina Faso.

Although the mission trips are short-term, they have a lasting impact, he said.

“We focus on sustainability. It’s about building long-lasting relationships,” he noted. “We have people who return time and time again to these countries.”

Tours of the Friends in Action building and office space will also be offered at the Community Day, providing more opportunities for people to learn about the organization. People can get information on the nonprofit’s local needs as well and learn how they help with projects such as mowing the grass or weeding flower beds.

“This will be a free, familyfriendly, relaxing day,” Bachert said. “There’s no commitment; the purpose is not to recruit but just to make people aware of who we are, so that maybe they can take what we do back to their church and share it with their congregants and community.”
