Sending love in a box

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 65 babies are stillborn each day in the United States. “That’s almost 25,000 babies a year,” said Carolyn Ogilvie. “The chances are great that you know someone who has experienced this.”

With that in mind, Ogilvie formed Selah’s Heart, an organization dedicated to helping honor women and their families who

“We’re not going to let their baby’s life go unnoticed.”

have experienced pregnancy loss.

Selah’s Heart will hold a community event on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. It will be an opportunity for fellowship and sharing while participants pack care boxes to donate to women in hospitals across the country.

In 2021, Ogilvie’s best friend, Lauren Walker, experienced a full-term stillbirth. As she helped her friend through the grief process, Ogilvie realized how common stillbirth is.

“I learned of all of these people in our inner circle who had experienced baby loss,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Why didn’t you say anything to us?’ No one wants to talk about it. Women think, ‘No one wants to hear about our sad story.’”

Ogilvie, who lives in Elizabethtown, knew she could lend a listening ear. Selah’s Heart, named after Lauren’s baby, began as a phone line. “I told women, ‘I’ll talk about your baby with you,’”

she said. The phone line grew so rapidly that she couldn’t keep up with the number of women calling or texting her, she shared. As Selah’s Heart grew, Ogilvie noted a common thread among the women’s stories: They all wished they had been better prepared for their time in the hospital. “That’s the only time they’re going to be with their baby in their whole life,” she said. “Oftentimes, people can be with their baby for multiple days.

We want every single hour to be purposeful.” So, the organization began to provide care boxes to families in hospitals. Each box is full of items intentionally chosen to help moms and dads make a lifelong memory together with their baby, Ogilvie said. Contents might include kits for handprints and footprints, postpartum care items for mothers, items to help fathers connect with their baby and even support for nurses

Last fall, GEARS held a mother/daughter paint night, and the event was so well received, the organization decided to host a similar event to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Mother/Daughter Craft Night will take place at the GEARS

Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, on Friday, May 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Participants will complete a guided craft, led by the staff from Twisted Easel in Elizabethtown.

“People are invited to bring in pictures and Mod Podge them onto wood blocks that will spell out the word ‘love,’” explained

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy

Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania.

“It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

Roberts to race for a cause

Jim Roberts of Mount Joy will compete in the 2024 One Lap of America, departing in early May. This year, he will have a new transit driver, his racing crew chief Joe Yacobenas from Lancaster. Yacobenas will help with the highway miles and maintaining the car, and Roberts will do all the competitive driving on the tracks. The pair will use Roberts’ new orange Corvette and travel to race tracks in Indiana, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and back to Indiana in support of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC).

Shoe enthusiast to showcase collection

The Elizabeth Hughes Society will hold a program on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The gathering will take place on the second floor in room 125, next to the contemporary sanctuary. The event is open to the public.

Vintage and antique shoes will be displayed at the Elizabeth Hughes Society’s upcoming meeting.

Roberts and Yacobenas will travel about 3,700 miles for the event and almost 5,000 miles by the time Roberts arrives back home again in just over a week. Along the way, they will compete against about 90 other teams.

This will be Roberts’ 15th time competing in One Lap of America, and the last several years, he has raised funds for the PBCC. He now has raised more than $48,000 in total for PBCC, which uses the funds for research and to help support women who have breast cancer.

Donors will be honored with a sticker on the roof of Roberts’ Corvette. The sticker may bear

the donor’s name or the name of someone the donor would like to honor or memorialize. To make a donation by credit card, visit www .pabreastcancer.org/one-lap-of -america/. Donations will also be accepted at Jim Roberts’ West Main Auto, 14 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

To follow Roberts’ One Lap of America journey, visit http:// onelapadventure.blogspot.com or search for “Jim’s One Lap Adventure” on Facebook.

The PBCC represents, supports, and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy, and breast cancer research grants. Brittany’s Hope announces gala speaker

Brittany’s Hope recently announced that Shelly Shepherd will be the speaker at the Brittany’s Ball Gala on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Shepherd, a motivational speaker, life coach, adoption advo -

responsibility, and to meet with other women who are also committed to these goals. The group’s founders organized, created, and staffed the first library in Elizabethtown. The Elizabeth Hughes Society continues to give financial gifts to the library and other community groups. For more information, call 717-361-5133.

Haven became a double amputee at the age of 14 months, losing her lower legs after her birth parents detonated a bomb while trying to commit a family murder/suicide. Adopted at 20 months, and now the youngest of seven children, Haven continues her miraculous journey. Haven represented the USA in swimming at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2021 and is well on her way to qualify for the summer Paralympics in Paris this summer.

Brittany’s Hope, headquartered in Elizabethtown, aids orphaned and at-risk children by providing adoption grants to families with the heart to adopt children with special needs, like Haven, and by providing humanitarian support directly to partner children’s homes. One hundred percent of all donations directly support the children served by the organization.

The upcoming gala will also include a silent auction. Community members may register for the auction at www.brittanyshope.org/events/ brittanysball.

Erin Thomas, GEARS administrative assistant. “It will be a nice keepsake to take home with them.”

Participants will also enjoy light refreshments and will have the opportunity to pose for pictures using fun props at a photo booth.

The program is appropriate for people of all ages, Thomas said, noting that most GEARS programs are focused on school-age children, but adult children attended with their parent at the fall event, and she encourages them to do so again this time around. “All are welcome,” she said. A Mother’s Day card-making station will be set up as well, providing entertainment for little ones who might finish the main craft early. No craft prowess is required to enjoy the event, Thomas said. “Twisted Easel does a great job of leading the program and making

sure everyone’s on the same page,” she said.

She also emphasized that although it’s called a “mother/ daughter” program, people are welcome to invite any adult mother figure in their life, whether it’s an aunt, sister, grandmother or friend.

“This is a really unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day,” Thomas commented. “It’s an activity to get you out in the community and help support a local business at the same time. It’s really a great bonding event for mothers and daughters.”

Registration for the Mother/ Daughter Craft Night will close on Friday, May 3. Admission is per couple, and there are separate fees for Elizabethtown residents and nonresidents. For more information or to register, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

who work in bereavement.

Putting together the boxes is a costly enterprise. The first year, Ogilvie assembled 10 boxes. The second, she made 20; this year, she’s aiming for more than 80. She started out packing the boxes herself in her free time while she was a stay-at-home mother of four, but she soon realized she could use some help.

She invited people from the community to help her pack the boxes a few months ago, and more than 50 people showed up to help. She hopes for a great turnout again at the April 28 event.

“We’ve partnered with a worship ministry, and we’ll include a

time of worship,” she said. “Before we send out the boxes, we pray over every single one. We put our hands on them and pray over the mom in her dark time. We pray that she would feel the love of Jesus.”

Above all, Ogilvie hopes Selah’s Heart will provide the comfort of a friend even though the women who receive the boxes have never met the donors.

“We like women to know, ‘We’re thinking of you,’” Ogilvie said. “We’re not going to let their baby’s life go unnoticed.”

There is no registration required for the box-packing event. Taylor Chip will provide refreshments. For more information on Selah’s Heart, visit www.selahsheart.org.

Travel Fair

Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laidback atmosphere is enhanced

from pg 1

by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

A representative of the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors

the 2023 PA Family Travel Fair.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

PASR sets Retirement Fair

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) will host its annual Retirement Fair on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The event is geared for people working in public schools in Pennsylvania who would like information about retirement.

To register before Friday, April 26, call 717-928-4432.

PASR began in 1937 to support retiring school employees as they transitioned from work to retirement. The organization’s activities include assisting members with supplemental health insurance and dental and vision care insurance, providing opportunities for travel both locally and around the world, and aiding school retirees who are unable to care for themselves completely. PASR is not a union.

Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR), the local chapter of PASR, is one of 70 chapters across the state sharing updates for retirees, providing deals on members’ benefits, and offering social activities. Members also participate in fundraising events for schools and students and receive discounted prices at many local businesses. PASR has supported more than 3,000 members who are unable to leave their residences or who need special attention in senior living homes.

In the last 12 years, LCSR has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships for high school

students across the county. In the last five years, the organization has also raised more than $20,000 to provide grants to school employees to science lab equipment, library materials, musical instruments, physical education equipment, and more. Members volunteer at food and clothing banks, libraries, schools and hospitals, day care centers, and other locations. “Probably the best ice cream in the world.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!

Museum restores iron lung

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, has completed the restoration and preservation of its iron lung exhibit. The completion of this project marks a milestone in the museum’s dedication to preserving medical history for future generations.

Originally acquired by the museum in the 2000s, the iron lung has stood as a symbol of medical innovation and the fight against polio. Its historical significance, coupled with its intricate engineering, made it a focal point of interest for visitors and researchers alike. Over the years, however, the iron lung began to show signs of wear and deterioration, prompting the museum’s preservation team to

undertake the preservation process.

Led by Dr. Jon Schrock and executive director Kim Jovinelli, the restoration process involved meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the iron lung’s mechanics. Every aspect of the exhibit, from its exterior casing to its internal components, was carefully assessed and preserved. Specialized techniques were employed to address corrosion, mechanical issues, and aesthetic concerns, ensuring that the iron lung retained its historical integrity while also complying with modern preservation standards.

Shelties will shine at Mayfest

This year, the annual Mayfest celebration in Maytown will go to the dogs but in a very cute way. Bonnie Frank will present two demonstrations of dog agility as part of the festivities on Saturday, May 4. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in historic Maytown; Frank’s dogs will demonstrate their skills at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Frank, a Maytown resident, has been participating in dog agility competitions with her pups since 2000. She learned about the activity after attending a trial in Reading with a friend. “I was enthralled, but I said, ‘This is cool. I’ll never be able to do that,’” she recalled with a laugh.

Fast forward two decades and Frank has not only competed; she’s succeeded. She’s been to national competitions with five different dogs, qualifying in each event.

Currently, Frank competes with 6-year-old Ginny and 2-year-old Rhys. Both dogs are Shelties.

At Mayfest, she hopes to entertain audiences as people watch the dogs in action.

“I’ll set up a very small course, and it’s just for entertainment purposes,” she said. “I’m not going to talk about how to train your dog. I’m not some big expert. It’s just fun to watch.”

Before and after Frank’s demonstrations, Mayfest will feature activities for people of all ages, said Linda Good, vice president of the Maytown Historical Society. “We do Mayfest every year to keep people interested and get new people interested in the history of Maytown,” she explained. “Maytown is an old town, and lots of historical events happened here. We’re trying to re-create and highlight as many as we can.”

More than 80 vendors and many food trucks will be featured at Mayfest, along with a scavenger hunt that will take participants to historic places in Maytown.

The Maytown Historical Society Museum, 4 W. High St., will host a display from local artist Delores Hackenberger. Guided bus tours of some of the town’s historic

Ginny shows off her moves on an agility course.

buildings and sites will be offered, and a variety of displays will be set up for viewing, including ones highlighting school yearbooks, pillowcases and blankets made by the Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) sewing club and artwork by DIS students.

Children’s games and chalk drawing will be featured, and there will be a cake walk as well as demonstrations of various historic crafts. Live music will entertain visitors to Mayfest, and a local woodcarver will offer demonstrations. A 2 p.m., a wedding ceremony of a local couple will be featured. Ye Olde Shenk’s Store Bake Shop and a penny candy stand will sell sweet treats. Siegrist Automotive on River Street will hold a car show during Mayfest, and the Maytown museum will feature several Model T’s on display on High Street.

Costumed students from DIS will participate in a traditional maypole dance as well.

Proceeds from Mayfest will benefit the Maytown Historical Society. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Good.

Activities will take place along King Street and in the areas around the museum. West High Street will be closed to traffic for the event. The rain date will be Sunday, May 5, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on Mayfest, call the museum at 717-426-1526 and leave a message.

Children participate in a traditional maypole dance.
